The Comfort Table

Nothing is more comforting than a home-cooked meal. And the best home cooking starts with fresh ingredients found close to home with foods that are local, seasonal, and organic. Raised in her grandmother's Southern kitchen, Katie Lee Joel comes from a "family of great cooks and big eaters." And she knows exactly what appeals to the home cook: recipes that are delicious, easy to follow, quick to prepare, and made with readily available seasonal ingredients.

In The Comfort Table, Katie dips into her archive of family recipes and updates all the classics from her childhood growing up in West Virginia, and also creates some inventive new favorites. This mouthwatering assortment of more than 125 recipes includes Southern staples like Fried Green Tomatoes, Chicken and Dumplings, Peach Cobbler, Meatloaf, and the quintessential Pulled Pork BBQ, which stand alongside contemporary classics like Roasted Carrot and Ginger Soup, Citrus-Tarragon Mahi-Mahi, and Dijon and Pistachio-Crusted Rack of Lamb.

But The Comfort Table is about more than just good old-fashioned home cooking. It's about sharing delicious, healthful meals -- made with love -- for friends and family. Katie's rich assortment of recipes for starters, salads, soups, entrees, side dishes, breads, breakfast, desserts, and drinks, is accompanied by entertaining tips and anecdotes to delight the modern foodie. The Comfort Table is a comprehensive, unpretentious, refreshingly accessible guide to creating unforgettable meals for occasions big and small.

Billy Joel is sure a lucky guy snaring Miss Katie Lee as his wife. This is a Southern girl who stays true to her roots and it shows in her delicious recipes. Her Buttermilk Pancakes with Caramelized Bananas are incrdible as well as her homey Chicken Pot Pie. This is a marvelous book to have in your collection!

Some recipes are just fair; however, some are very good. And, the drinks are very good and easy. Overall, I like this cookbook a lot and would recommend this to my friends.

Paula Deen writes the intro to this cookbook and I had to agree with her - 'don't trust skinny cooks' BUT after looking over Mrs. Joel's recipes, she's got some sure-fire winners! The cookbook is easy to follow and includes recipes for every fare you desire with simplicity being key, which I love. The ingredient lists are perfect and you have most things in the pantry or they are easy to find. The pictures of Katie Lee Joel throughout the book were a little too staged for my taste and don't really add to the cookbook but the recipes are grand.

(Hide Review...)  Simple but satisfying!

I love this little book. The recipes are simple - short on ingredients for the most part but long on taste, in my opinion. I love the fact that it's a basic collection - for cooks like me who are just venturing into the kitchen, it's not an overwhelming read and the recipes are fairly easy to execute. I'm also a Paula Deen fan, being a Louisiana girl, so her endorsement certainly helps.

Some recipes I love: all three of the flat pies, lemon meringue squares, chicken pot pie and the pulled pork.

This book is also beautifully designed and well-written. Katie doesn't write any more than is necessary for both the anecdotes and the recipe steps. And I buy books for their graphic appeal as much as the content and this one is gorgeous - beautiful layout and photographs.

If you are looking for a simple collection to get you started in the kitchen, this is a great read. More advanced cooks will probably find it a little too basic.

I love this cookbook! The recipes are great for the every-day cook like myself. They are not overly complicated yet are delicious. My husband and I loved the meatloaf. I also loved the scallop corn chowder...yum! I really like how Katie writes a little intro for each recipe. She really captures the comfort factor by tying food to memory. Her southern roots and ideas on food make her feel very relatable to me. Food is associated with memories and feelings of home, and I feel like this cookbook really captures that. I will be anxiously awaiting her next book! Great job, Katie!

After seeing Katie on Oprah and Regis and Kelly, I picked up her book on amazon. The pictures are beautiful, and the recipes really are fun and easy to make! So far, I've made the meatloaf, green pesto salad and several of the desserts, and they are always a hit!

Looking forward to creating more of these recipes, and hopefully to more Katie books to come!

(Hide Review...)  Finally a cookbook with real food everyone wants to eat!!!
Reviewer Permalink
Finally a cookbook with real food everyone wants to eat, and the recipes work beautifully! I never take the time to write book reviews, but this book and its author truly warrant all the praise I can lavish on them. I had a dinner party last night with an eclectic guest list. People ranging in age from 8 to 93, from all different backgrounds and with equally diverse pallets. I didn't know what to serve. I wanted to please everyone, quite a daunting task with this cast of characters. I was thumbing through Gourmet magazine looking for inspiration when all of a sudden I realized the best thing to do was to keep the menu simple, but delicious.

I had ordered "The Comfort Table" after seeing Katie Lee Joel on Oprah, she was so warm and seemed so down to earth, and when Oprah raved about her Meatloaf I knew I had to get the book. I decided to do a test run of a few of Katie's recipes before the day of the party. This was also a wonderful excuse to stray from my rigid diet! I made the Italian Sausage and Provolone Flat Pie, and it was amazing!!! I decided to make my entire menu for the dinner party using Katie's recipes. Everything turned out absolutely perfectly!!! it is so rare that recipes are this accurate. All of my guests were in Heaven! I have never had a more enjoyable dinner party, everyone delighted in each and every dish that was served. This book is fantastic! I am going to give it to everyone I know! It will prove to be a classic!

(Hide Review...)  skeptical at first, but won over in the end
Reviewer Permalink
I was skeptical at first when I saw that Katie Lee Joel had written a cookbook. What is this "kid" going to tell me about cooking anything? I must admit that I was even a little embarrassed to order it. However, I have read and re-read the book and have made a few of the recipes (Barley Pilaf and Logan Co. Hamburgers)and I must admit that I am won over. Her food reminds me of a younger Ina Garten. It is easy and it is so good. All of it truly is "comfort food". Her intros to the food get old after a while and there are way too many pics of her in the book but in the end this book is great, especially for a newbie. It would make a wonderful gift for a novice and nice little pick-me-up for an experienced cook.

(Hide Review...)  Worth it alone for the meatloaf recipe!
Reviewer Permalink
This is one of my favorite cookbooks in a long time. Don't knock Katie Lee because she is beautiful, skinny, and married to my husbands favorite singer. This girl can cook and her recipes prove it. I had to make the meatloaf aka manloaf for my husband. She's right, men do love meatloaf and not only did he eat way more of it than he ever does mine, I ate just as much! The best ever!!!
I have tried many of the recipes and they are easy, filling, and just darned good. The mediterranean pasta, chicken club salad, and her grandma's biscuits are so delicious. I plan on trying most of her recipes because it's "familiar" to me and brings back memories of my mom and grandma in the kitchen cooking. I was always in the way though and got shooed out most of the time.

I appreciate all her personal pictures too - of her and the food. She seems like a really nice girl who I could be friends with. So, if she should ever invite me over, I'd accept!

What a disappointment! The look of the book is far more interesting than the recipes. There is nothing substantial, innovative or creative about the selections on this volume. After the initial let down I looked at the author background and realized that she was given cooking credentials in order to host the dismal first season of Bravo's Top Chef. Therefore it it's easy to assume that she needed a cookbook fast in order to pretend to be what she obviously is not: a great cook!

that.
I really like this book and will continue to use it on a regular

Reviewer Permalink
I will admit I was never a huge fan of Katie Lee's however am an avid cookbook collector. So someone got this for me as part of a gift, well.......bottom line. A DISASTER. I can't believe she actually calls this a cookbook, it is so basic so elementary, it is almost as though a group of sixth graders got together to create their school cookbook. It is almost an insult to any "real cook" to own such a book. Beyond the recipes, I found the fact that she chose to splatter her glossy pictures throughout the book pretentious, obnoxious and incredibly narcissistic.
I say don't waste your money, I promptly went to Borders to return it for credit and get this......the gal behind the desk informed me that it was the third return she had on the book.
Wait till it goes for sale for 1.99 in the bargain corner.. ..trust me it won't be long.
Billy...get out while you can, she is after one thing only, herself and her career. Another Katie Lee Joel project bites the dust.

(Hide Review...)  The Basic Table
Reviewer Permalink
I paged through this at the bookstore this weekend after seeing rave reviews online. The recipes are so basic! Appetizers like deviled eggs, guacamole and spinach artichoke dip - with no variation from the classics. There is a whole section with the most uninspired salad recipes I've ever seen - like stuff I would throw together for a weeknight side. This cookbook would be useful to the very BEGINNER cook, but I don't think I could find anything in here to entertain with that I don't already have a recipe for or couldn't come up with myself.

Katie Lee Joel has written an easy to use cooking book that excels. She has been featured on "Live with Regis and Kelly" where she demonstrated an exquisite dish. "The Comfort Table" should be in every cooks library.

The very title of the book tells us that it was not written for the advanced cook or those who want to explore the sophisticated flavors we often expect from a Thomas Keller or Jean Georges Vongerichten. The author's lackluster stint as host of the "Top Chef" TV gave me little encouragement to buy the book. After browsing the content of the book, I was however motivated to make the purchase as many recipes promise different but simple take on familiar dishes. I am glad I did since a few of the recipes I tried (Broccoli Salad, Slow Cooker Pulled Pork Barbecue) proved to be winners. Mrs. Joel convinced me that she is sharing generously from her personal culinary experience that I look forward to recreating more of the simple but very satisfying food. Just the way comfort food should be (I don't want clever concoction).

What a great cookbook! I heard Katie's interview on the Howard Stern show and became interested in this book. I must say that I was so pleased at the array of "down home" comfort foods presented in this book. I have many cookbooks and cook VERY OFTEN. I found it refreshing that she came out with a book that was simply stated and easy to follow. It was so nice to read a cookbook that called for easy-to-find ingredients as it seems recipes are always calling for obscure spices and ingredients that are not readily available to everyone. I would highly recommend this book to "new" cooks and anyone who is looking for truly delicious "comfort food" recipes!! Yummy! Great Job Katie!!

I must admit, I think I would have hated Katie Lee Joel in high school. She's stunning, and she includes 40 photos of her gorgeous self in this cookbook. I couldn't figure out how an oh-so-young model-type would warrant her own beautifully produced cookbook of yummy but essentially easy recipes. I looked closer at a photo of her with who I assumed was her dad, a gray-bearded baldie. Is that... Billy Joel? Ahhh, I see. She is Mrs. Billy Joel.

The book has chapters on starters, salads, soups, entrees, side dishes, breads, breakfasts, desserts and drinks, plus a section with tips on entertaining. A foreword by Paula Deen starts things off (she also contributes her recipe for Grandmother Paul's Red Velvet Cake). Especially good recipes include the peach cobbler, cinnamon rolls and roasted tomato soup. Nothing is too fancy or difficult, and there is a photo of the recipe on every second or third page spread.

The other wife-of-celebrity cookbook I bought recently is Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld. I love it, and use it all the time. Jessica doesn't have any glamour-girl photos in her cookbook, just some line drawing cartoons of her and her kids and husband Jerry. I get the feeling Jessica and I would have felt the same way about Katie Lee in the ninth grade. Meow.

If you like very simple recipes - the book is ok - but it seems like a lot of recipes you can come up with on your own. I thought I was going to get a very warm and sentimental book - but instead it is Ms Joel's amateur recipes and her fashion shoot. I wouldn't waste my money on this pretentious book. Was not really comforted by "The Comfort Table".

On top of that, the book is beautiful, filled with great photos (of both the dishes and the gorgeous author)and it's a perfect size for those of us who actually use cook books in the kitchen!
