The China Study : The Most Compreshensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health

Referred to as the "Grand Prix of epidemiology" by The New York Times, this study examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition with surveys from 6,500 adults in more than 2,500 counties across China and Taiwan, and conclusively demonstrates the link between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet, that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed.

I purchased this and Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn - two books closely related / companions in my opinion. They even talk about each other. Some of this book is a little in-depth for the person who is not interested in scientific studies, but the authors do a pretty good job of putting it all in plain english. This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn about how nutrition relates to food and disease. It is also a great book for learning about the shortfalls of the medical system in America and the politics behind medicine and the food industries. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED reading for anyone who wishes to be in-the-know.

I also appreciate the viewpoint of food and thousands of chemicals in food interacting together to produce good or bad health, as opposed to many other books and studies which take a more isolated approach, such as studying vitamin C and only vitamin C, for example, This book takes a more wholistic approach - meaning that the entire food must be considered in how all things interact, and not just one single element of nutrition alone.

This book was recommended to me by a friend. It took me a while to get the book...and a few months before I got to it. Once I started reading it, I was on fire...and telling anyone who would listen. Every human being should be able to read this book. Dr. Campbell lays out the research in understandable terms...and it is shocking to read. It proves to me that we must be in charge of our own health...and that means eating healthy...and vegetarian. This information can truly save lives.

Very well presented research that matches what I've seen traveling around the world. It also matches what I see with immigrant families and the changes that occur when some adopt the american diet. The western diet needs to change. After reading this book, it was very easy to give up my animal-based diet. Of course, eating out is a challenge, but I'm learning. :-) I'm losing weight and feeling great.

Barry Sears' books are based on these same principles and they are very accessible and written (except for one) for the lay person. If you really want to get into the science behind the nutritional advice, read his book: Enter the Zone, A Dietary Road Map to Lose Weight Permanently, Reset Your Genetic Code, Prevent Disease, Achieve Masximum Physical Performance and Enhance Mental Productivity. The easy reads are the shorter titles such as A Week in the Zone. You don't need to slog through a 400+ page book.

Wow, how refreshing to find an author who is a genuine authority, who supports his conclusions with fact and who lacks the bias that drives many writers on this subject to deceive and mislead, most doctors to remain ignorant of and uninterested in the relationship between health and nutrition and most of the food industry and medical profession too busy making money to care. This book deals with science, not politics. I read it five weeks ago and was so motivated by it I altered my diet to whole foods only. My blood pressure has improved from borderline hypertensive to 106/67 and I feel trimmer and fitter already. I've purchased the book for my children so they have some basis for questioning conventional advice on this important subject.

The China Study is a large survey of health and nutrition habits that the author concludes support a vegan diet. The book discusses the China Study and the author's conclusions. The Study used surveys from 6,500 adults in China and Taiwan to analyze over 350 variables relating health and nutrition. The China Study looked specifically at the relationship between diet and disease in over 100 villages all over China. It compared the rates of disease and how they differed between regions and looked for dietary habits that could account for those differences. The author uses the data on what he sees as nutrition's impact on disease and concludes that a vegan diet promotes good health and longevity.

A strong emphasis of the book is the way research on nutrition is conducted - he calls it "scientific reductionism". His complaint is that particular nutrients or food groups are isolated to determine their effects and all other influences are ruled out. Even though this is how research is done, and Dr. Campbell specifically looks at the impact of nutrition on health, he does not think we can accurately study single nutrients. In fact, he does not think information on nutrition is accurately obtained, reported, and utilized in the West. He also thinks the western diet is terrible including many of the popular diets such as the Atkins diet or any diet that emphasizes animal products.

The book provides recommendations for changing your eating habits, and suggests that poor health and diseases can be reversed or improved by changing your diet. If you are a proponent of veganism, you will certainly enjoy the book and learn from it. If you are on the fence about veganism, it may sway you. If you would not appreciate eating a vegan diet, you may take offense at the author's criticism of non-vegan eating. Regardless of your perspective, you will appreciate the substantial amount of work that was put into this book. The passion and conviction of the author come through as this book is clearly designed to help others.

The book's contents include:

Reviewer Permalink
Before I review the book, a little history of me here:

When I was a chubby girl in college I tried many kinds of diet to lose weight, and one of them was a "healthier" form of Atkins diet, called the South Beach diet. I read from a Women's Health magazine that it's effective and nutritious. At the time, I did not have any knowledge of nutrition, and unfortunately I had followed the diet thinking that it's healthy. Of course, I gained weight soon after unable to keeping up with the diet and failed miserably. I was sick all the time also and didn't know why. I had many health problems and was on a variety of different prescription drugs that my doctor urged me to take.

Many years later, I decided to become a pure vegetarian not only because of health but because of realization of my diet's impact on the environment and animal welfare, thanks to several documentaries called Baraka & Earthlings. When I became a vegetarian I lost weight almost effortlessly, and as I gradually dropped dairy and egg products from my diet I lost even more weight - the weight that I had worked so hard to lose but failed to as a non-vegetarian! I am now healthier than ever, never get sick, and feel so much better overall, all without depending on unnecessary drugs and doctor visits.

Even so, after I read this important book - the largest research conducted on correlation between nutrition and health - I was extremely shocked at this fascinating study. Now, I cannot stop talking about the book with everyone that I care about. Everyone who is interested in their health effects of consuming animal products should read this very important book.

According to the study, cancer, heart diseases, osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol - all of these modern diseases can be prevented and even reversed by whole food, plant-based diet! I am now a firm believer of this, as I watched my family members suffer greatly (i.e. cancer, osteoporosis, etc.) due to their animal-based diets. Everything became so clear to me. Now, my whole family follow a more plant-based diet than ever. My sister, my boyfriend, and even my mom - follow a vegetarian diet and have improved their health greatly.

Everything makes sense to me. There are so much misinformation out there regarding diet and health, that public can be easily confused about what and how one should eat, like I was.

As a vegan who was once a heavy meat-eater, I hope more people can realize the truth and obtain better health, as well as helping to restore our environment, and end unnecessary suffering of animals.

I just completed The China Study and I feel it was a very interesting, informative read. It's kind of a scientific thriller as in what else will our good scientist T. Colin Campbell reveal?
The end of the book was the most interesting to me...how the establishment ignores easy, inexpensive ways to heal disease thru diet, how doctors who espouse nutritional therapy are rejected and how industry and government are intertwined and, as a result, the public is left ignorant on how they can easily and simply heal themselves. One thing to think about: I am sure many who read this book want nationalized health care. I am not sure that would be a good thing at the moment with a government that is unable to give us the information we need right NOW. It is addicted to costly procedures and drugs making everything more complex, painful and expensive. In fact, people are DYING from our conventional medicare...one of the biggest killers of Americans. Do we really want to hand over the reigns of our healthcare (and money) to a government that is unable to act in our own self-interest? If we did, our money would be wasted in furthering the pharmaceutical and medical industries at the expense of our health. I don't think it's a good idea unless it can be cleaned up and the motives clean. I'd rather give my healthcare dollars to people and institutions that espouse the truth...something the government is incapable of.

I heard about this book when reading, "A Cancer Therapy". I originally checked it out from my local library, but found that there was so much information, it needed to be added to my home reference library. The science listed in this book is absolutely compelling and life changing! I have been doing research into the link between animal based products, namely meat and dairy, and disease and this book really spelled it out using scientific data and detailing years worth of experiments documenting the relationship between the two. This book is a MUST read for anyone. It has literally changed my life! We have changed the way we eat so that we could live a healthy lifestyle and enjoy this life to the fullest. What's the point of living a long life if you're sick, in pain, or fighting a disease? I want to live to be a healthy great-grandmother. I also feel a responsibility as a mother and a wife to feed my family the best way I know how. I am hoping with the information I have learned in this book, as well as others, I can train my small children in healthy eating habits and possibly prevent them from battling disease or cancer in the future. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK !!!!!!

(Hide Review...)  Condemns Animal Protein Consumption
Reviewer Permalink
In this book, T. Colin Campbell asserts that consumption of animal protein leads to heart disease and cancer, and suggests that going vegetarian can actually reverse heart disease and arrest the growth of cancer (and that old age need not be the ordeal that it usually is in America today). He refers to the China Study, an extensive study of dietary patterns across various regions of China. He claims that the study found that those who consume less animal protein get fewer "diseases of affluence" such as heart disease and cancer.

The author also hypothesizes that consuming animal protein, including dairy products, can lead to autoimmune diseases, kidney stones (shudder!), diabetes, blindness, and other conditions.

Campbell asserts that science in this country is strongly influenced by industries that sell food products containing animal protein, and also asserts that American medicine attempts to treat diseases with drugs and surgery rather than with better nutrition.

However, there are many who question the findings in the book, and even most Eastern diets contain at least some meat. While Americans as a whole do eat too much meat, and this book is a good warning to cut back on meat consumption to an extent, one might be wary about entirely eliminating it from your diet.

This 417 page book discusses the China Study, which examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition using surveys from 6,500 adults in China and Taiwan. This investigation shows a strong link between good nutrition and avoiding or reversing obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The author, Dr. Colin Campbell, concludes that a plant-based vegan diet is the best strategy for health and longevity. (Note that while the Chinese diet is lower in meat and dairy than the Western diet, it is not vegetarian.) Dr. Campbell is a strong critic of the western diet, the Atkins diet, and diets that emphasize animal products. He also criticizes the way nutritional information is obtained, disseminated, and put into practice in the west. In fact, Campbell makes the point that nutrition research and studies often isolate certain nutrients or food groups in order to determine their effects. (Isolating something in order to study it is a necessary "evil" of the research process, which may cause tainted or biased results.) Dr. Campbell, on the other hand, focuses on the effects of nutrition (as a whole) on health without a strong emphasis on other factors that may affect health such as hygiene, air and water pollution, exposure to environmental toxins and chemicals, exercise, etc.

The author has strong and convincing beliefs about nutrition and its benefits to our health and draws upon the China Study research to support his thesis. He is clearly sincere about wanting to help people improve their quality of life and provides concrete suggestions to help the reader change poor eating habits into good ones. His ideas include that heart disease can be reversed by diet, breast cancer is affected by hormones in the blood which are determined by what we eat, dairy products increase prostate cancer risk, antioxidants in fruits and vegetables positively affect mental function in old age, Type 1 diabetes is linked to infant feeding practices, and casein protein from cow's milk is cancer-promoting while proteins from plants including wheat and soy are not.

The book is an extraordinary work by a researcher who passionately believes in a vegetarian diet and wants to help people live healthfully. Most people would find it interesting. I am particularly impressed with the explanations about the diseases; it is medical knowledge made easy.

I have recommended the book to many friends and relatives and have sent copies to my sons.

After reading the book, I have started a process to gear my diet to a plant-based diet.

Campbell's bold remarks on government, industry and even the health organizations should be publicized for all people to become aware of the reality.

I got this book as a gift and then I gave it to someone as a gift. It made me think about what I am eating. As a result of the information, not marketing hype, I have made changes to my eating habits. I feel healthier and have lost weight. It is a very good book for those who want to improve their health through food.

This book was suggested to me as a way I might start thinking of re-evaluating my diet. I was convicted by the research and conclusions and have DEFINITELY re adjusted my diet to minimize the food groups mentioned.
I have passed the book on to 2 people and they too are very interested in its conclusions!
I highly recommend it!

Do your research before accepting this as proof that a Vegan diet is the solution. After chapters touting his credentials, Campbell glazed over his research to try and prove that a Vegan lifestyle is the most healthy. Many of you may know unhealthy Vegans and like me find a conclusion that Vegan is the most healthy diet hard to believe at face value. So I did a review of those reviews that gave this book 1 star. C. R. Moulis "Christina Moulis" thankfully went through some effort to review the real research. Read her review.

I give this two stars because of the research and thought it has sparked me to do since I read it. And I applaud any Doctor who is willing to research Nutrition and try and identify what is "healthy". However we unfortunately live in a world of advertising and I feel that this book is more of an advertisement than giving the whole story. He mentions a study using rats and animal protein, or casein (milk protein). But we never know if these were powders or raw milk from healthy animals. Or if the animal protein talked about is from a plant grazing animal or one that is fed in a feed lot with the cheapest food available.

After reading,Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet Dictocrats
I felt enlightened. The notions and diet suggestions make sense. If we lived in a culture that still raised our own dairy (raw) and meat, we could be more healthy. And we would probably reduce the intake of meat because of the difficulty and unpleasant job of butchering and cleaning. However, most Americans are not able to live this way. And many must be careful because of the number of individuals with dairy allergies. But I can't accept that God didn't intend for us to eat cheese, yogurt, and even ice cream. I'm not suggesting an abundant consumption but in moderation it is just a food that can't be evil due to the pleasure it provides our palate.

For the summer months when one can plant a garden and eat fresh without spending a fortune I have no doubt that a Raw Food Diet would be ideal. Living on Live Food

But in winter when fruits and vegetables are in short supply we need to augment our diet in order to sustain good health. The Food You Crave: Luscious Recipes for a Healthy Life

However I do believe that more research will soon find that high animal protein diets are not healthy, they just don't make much sense. Even Whey and Soy Protein powders just don't seem right. Humans were not created to drink powder. I feel like a pirate on Davy Jones' crew when my food is turned to powder. Eating that way just is not pleasant, food was created to satisfy and fulfill our natural cravings. But in order for the cravings to be more natural you must detoxify.

I look forward to the day when we can get the real story, that is not tainted by lobbyists and propaganda. When Nutrition, Health and Medicine can congeal together so we can have a healthier society. For now I will continue to search and use my own gut instincts to help me find truths from falsehoods.

(Hide Review...)  WHAT'S THE CHINA STUDY?
Reviewer Permalink
This book discusses the China Study, which examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition using surveys from 6,500 adults in China and Taiwan. This investigation shows a strong link between good nutrition and avoiding or reversing obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The author concludes that a plant-based vegan diet is the best strategy for health and longevity. The author is a strong critic of the western diet, the Atkins diet, and diets that emphasize animal products. The book also criticizes the way nutritional information is obtained, disseminated, and put into practice in the west.

The author makes the point that nutrition research and studies often isolate certain nutrients or food groups in order to determine their effects. He is, however, presenting the effects of nutrition on health when there are many other factors that affect health and lifestyle including hygiene, air and water pollution, exposure to environmental toxins and chemicals, exercise, genetics, etc. The author has strong and convincing beliefs about nutrition and its benefits to our health and uses the China Study research to support his theories.

The China Study is an impressively large survey of health and nutrition habits that the author concludes supports a vegan diet. The Chinese diet is lower in meat and dairy than the Western diet, though it is not vegetarian. The book, however, is an impressive work by a researcher who passionately believes in a vegetarian diet and wants to help people live healthfully. Most people would find it interesting and useful. I certainly agree with his suggestions to eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, and nuts, and to limit animal products! I also recommend THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams

This book summarizes the incredible large-scale study of diet and health that draws some potentially uncomfortable conclusions about the typical American diet. As a motivation to seriously consider making the switch to a vegan diet, the book is powerful. I only gave it four stars because I felt it could have presented more of the study's data and details and spent less time recounting the efforts of the food and drug industry to promote different ideas. The events covered in the fourth section began to come across as a bit of a paranoid rant (though I don't doubt at all that it is true).

I bought this book for my niece whose son has an inoperable brain tumour. Once I opened it up however I could not put it down and I feel it has changed my own life in a completely positive way. I have my own medical issues and have been ill a lot in the past five years. Now I have given up meat almost entirely and milk products entirely and I feel 50-100% better in a few weeks.
My niece is reading the book now, not sure if she will be able to convince her son to follow the diet, he hates vegetables but since milk proteins are the worst offenders maybe she can get him off milk and cheese.
I highly recommend this book to anyone. I bought an extra copy for my niece to put in the lending library at their local cancer society office.

Those who do follow the advice on diet and lifestyle promoted in The China Study would experience a healthy life free of the lifestyle diseases seen in the Western World today. I think everyone should read this book carefully and with an open mind. It makes sense. I am alive today because I have followed this counsel.

I've always heard great things about this book and the more I read the more I can see my life changing. The research they have done on animal protien and it's link to disease is facinating and a real wake-up call. I have reevaluated my views on what a healthy diet actually is. If you're the type of person that wants to lead a healthy and happy life and help others to do so as well, then you will thoroughly enjoy this book.

Very good book, and an eye-opener on diet, but does not explain in detail how to execute the diet and is not quite entirely convincing on all points. It is, however, very convincing about reducing dietary animal protein.

That is not such an easy thing to do. In fact, it may be nearly impossible for some. Most of us are brought up, by people who care about us, having been told to "finish your meat" and "drink your milk" or else we'll be sick. It's human nature to want to believe that what we've been doing is the best thing. So when we are told that it isn't, we can either consider that we may have been wrong all along, which is unsettling, or we can attack the message.

If I say that I feel better, with fewer aches and pains since eliminating animal products, that's subjective. But if I say my cholesterol level has gone from 189 to 157 with virtually the same amount of exercise, in a matter of just a few months, that's objective. Or when we learn about Dr. John McDougall, for example, who has reduced or actually eliminated his patients need for prescription drugs for ailments such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and even multiple sclerosis and many other illnesses through diet alone, shouldn't we at least take a closer look at this?

One of the most interesting parts of the book is the section `why haven't you heard this before?' The author explains "There are powerful, influential and enormously wealthy industries that stand to lose a vast amount of money if Americans start shifting to a plant based diet. Their financial health depends on controlling what the public knows about nutrition and health" pg 249. And "Personal bias is stronger than you may think. I know scientists with family members who died from cancer and it angers them to entertain the possibility that personal choices, like diet, could have played a role in the death of their loved ones. Likewise, there are scientists for whom the high fat, high animal-based diet they eat every day is simply what they learned was healthy at a young age; they love the habit, and they don't want to change" pg 266.

But that's an important part of being human, the ability act not just on instinct, but to carefully consider the consequences of our actions, and then make the optimal choice - even if that means changing.

I am a registered dietitian and this is the most profound, important book on health and the food we eat that I have ever read. It is based on the largest study of nutrition ever conducted, but includes much more nutrition research findings than even what the China Study revealed. T. Colin Campbell (no relation to me) is one of the most knowledgeable, respected nutrition researchers of our time and very engagingly shares a wake-up call for us all. I could not put this book down. If you are interested in food or good nutrition, please read this book. If you are interested in good health, have a serious health problem or want to avoid one, please read this book. If you prepare meals for people you love, please read this book. If you eat, please read this book. It could change your life -- it certainly did change mine.
