The Chicago Manual of Style

The Fifteenth Edition is available in book form, on CD-ROM for Windows, and as a subscription Web site. The same content from The Chicago Manual of Style is in all three versions.

In the 1890s, a proofreader at the University of Chicago Press prepared a single sheet of typographic fundamentals intended as a guide for the University community. That sheet grew into a pamphlet, and the pamphlet grew into a book—the first edition of the Manual of Style, published in 1906. Now in its fifteenth edition, The Chicago Manual of Style—the essential reference for authors, editors, proofreaders, indexers, copywriters, designers, and publishers in any field—is more comprehensive and easier to use than ever before.

Those who work with words know how dramatically publishing has changed in the past decade, with technology now informing and influencing every stage of the writing and publishing process. In creating the fifteenth edition of the Manual, Chicago's renowned editorial staff drew on direct experience of these changes, as well as on the recommendations of the Manual's first advisory board, composed of a distinguished group of scholars, authors, and professionals from a wide range of publishing and business environments.

Every aspect of coverage has been examined and brought up to date—from publishing formats to editorial style and method, from documentation of electronic sources to book design and production, and everything in between. In addition to books, the Manual now also treats journals and electronic publications. All chapters are written for the electronic age, with advice on how to prepare and edit manuscripts online, handle copyright and permissions issues raised by technology, use new methods of preparing mathematical copy, and cite electronic and online sources.

A new chapter covers American English grammar and usage, outlining the grammatical structure of English, showing how to put words and phrases together to achieve clarity, and identifying common errors. The two chapters on documentation have been reorganized and updated: the first now describes the two main systems preferred by Chicago, and the second discusses specific elements and subject matter, with examples of both systems. Coverage of design and manufacturing has been streamlined to reflect what writers and editors need to know about current procedures. And, to make it easier to search for information, each numbered paragraph throughout the Manual is now introduced by a descriptive heading.

Clear, concise, and replete with commonsense advice, The Chicago Manual of Style, fifteenth edition, offers the wisdom of a hundred years of editorial practice while including a wealth of new topics and updated perspectives. For anyone who works with words, whether on a page or computer screen, this continues to be the one reference book you simply must have.

What's new in the Fifteenth Edition:

* Updated material throughout to reflect current style, technology, and professional practice

* Scope expanded to include journals and electronic publications

* Comprehensive new chapter on American English grammar and usage by Bryan A. Garner (author of A Dictionary of Modern American Usage)

* Updated and rewritten chapter on preparing mathematical copy

* Reorganized and updated chapters on documentation, including guidance on citing electronic sources

* Streamlined coverage of current design and production processes, with a glossary of key terms

* Descriptive headings on all numbered paragraphs for ease of reference

* New diagrams of the editing and production processes for both books and journals, keyed to chapter discussions

* New, expanded Web site with special tools and features for Manual users at www.chicagomanualofstyle.org.

What can one say about the Chicago Manual of Style? It's certainly nice to have a big hardcover copy on my desk instead of googling everything, that I can say.

I love reference books. I had an editing job that required me to have "15" so I had the perfect excuse to buy it. But what a difficult book to use. I had to check a few relatively easy things, and one or two obscure things. If the answer wasn't where I'd think it should be the book directed me elsewhere, an elsewhere where it was also difficult to find what I needed. It sure looks good, but....

This indispensable volume is one of the finest books written for writers and editors of all time. One of its nicest features is that it is actually a joy to read. I particularly enjoy this version due to its added usage guide. I eagerly anticipated its release (to the point of pre-ordering it) and have been well rewarded with its purchase. I would recommend it for anyone who wishes to do "well" instead of "good."

There are a few references that are essential for anyone going off to college. This is one of them. It will be just as useful fifty years from now as it is today. I am in the process of buying graduation gifts and include this book as a must have for everyone getting ready to continue their academic careers. This year I decided to give graduation "gift packs" with several books - which are listed below. I would classify all as "essential reading." The Elements of Style (Coyote Canyon Press Classics), New American Roget's College Thesaurus in Dictionary Form (Revised & Updated) (Signet Reference), Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition (Red Kivar Binding with Jacket), and Essential Etiquette Fundamentals, Vol. 1: Dining Etiquette.

I am a first-time author and needed a lot of help. Even with the help from my self-publishing company, I needed more. I had never heard of the Chicago Manual of Style. The publishing company uses this book so I ordered it. I have to admit that it still didn't hold all my answers but it did help. I found it easy to navigate but as all books there were some things that weren't addressed. These I looked for in the Merriman Webster Dictionary. They also have an online dictionary. That was most helpful. I'm glad I ordered the Chicago Manual of Style and I'm sure I'll use it often as I continue to write.

This is a great book. It provides a broad range of information on style. I use it mostly for formatting references in journal articles (I'm a journal editor). It does have a good amount of international information, too, though has some limits for people who are not living or writing in America--for example, in titles and honorifics, it breaks down right to the municipal level in US, but not in other countries.
Two things I would like to see. First is a hearty softcover edition (this is heavy enough and I carry it a lot of places to do work.
Second is some kind of ability, once you've bought the book, to access the on-line version, which includes both all of the information in the book, and a full range of advice on a variety of other issues that readers have brought to their attention. The two in tandem are the ultimate style resource.

I stayed away from the Chicago Manual for years because I remember being intimidated by it in college, and because now, in my master's program, they require APA (ugh!). I let the Hanukkah Fairy bring me this because I started a new, writing-heavy job, and I am so glad she or he did, because the manual has mellowed with age, becoming flexible, thoughtful and agreeable. It has already helped me on the job several times. For example, it acknowledges that distinctions are blurring between marketing copy and what us old-timers think of as "text," and that it is all right for organizations to improvise some of their own conventions. It's as if they're saying, "Don't be stupid and get yourself fired lower-casing the appositive form of your boss's title because of something WE told you!" Buying the Chicago Manual is like investing in a good camera or paint set; it can't do the work for you, but it can certainly help you improve your work.

I expected a rather dry composition of rules. Instead, the examples are usually both somewhat lively and useful. In addition, on occassion the deep structure of our language peeks thru, providing insights into the way English compositors think. The utility of the tome is limited, however, by the exhaustive depth and breadth of the subject: finding a relavent rule for a particular topic can be confusing. There is definite lack of emphasis on the fluidity of language as a mode of communication. Finally, the book lacks a sppell checker.

The Chicago Manual of Style's Fifteenth Edition is a comprehensive and quality guide for professional writers, editors, and publishers. My current focus is on conforming to Chicago Style conventions, copy editing and formatting of my Doctoral Dissertation. I find that Kate L. Turabian's A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 7th Edition is a more useful resource for this present endeavor. My intention in writing this review is not to be overly critical of the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th Edition. Since Amazon Books offers new copies at an extremely resonable price, the investment in this book is more than a worthwhile one.

As an author, I based the style rules on this book. It is great to have a single source of truth for style and grammar rules.

My only gripe is that everyone should use this one source of truth. Instead, newspapers use AP Style, University professors will use MLA, and other authors use thier industry guidlines. The result is confusion on right and wrong usage.

Going forward, every author, whether news, books, or technical white papers should use this book as its authority.

The Chicago Manual of Style is a basic requirement for reference when editing for any academic press or dealing with works that require adherence to scholarly formats. There are a few instances where the Manual ducks responsibility and leaves matters up to individual authors and editors, but overall it gives succinct guidelines that make sense. Used in tandem with the online Chicago Manual it helps immensely in dealing with thorny issues of syntax and style.

Still the standard for editors and copy editors. The 15th edition is much more geared than previous editions for those working on a computer and doing research on the internet. However, do not throw away your copy of the 14th edition, for to make room for new material in the 15th edition much of the detailed advice on punctuation and and usage in the 14th edition has been omitted from the 15th edition.

I came across this book years ago when I had to knock out a paper for my college professor. The references had to be according to the Chicago Manual of Style.

I've found out since then that there are other manuals of style but when working with some printers they told me that the Chicago Manual of Style is the print industry standard.

In spite of that handicap the book is well written and laid out. I find it relatively quick and easy to find whatever information I need. A book like this completes your library of English reference books. You can learn from here, for instance, what is an em dash or an en dash.

Be prepared to cross-reference your notes when you decide to use this manual. The contradictions are only on the surface and if one reviews all cases there is a beautiful simplicity and consistency in the system this work out-lines. Better still, for those VERY few cases not covered, the overall system is flexible enough and can show a user how to devise his own solutions according to the Chicago paradigm. This is a must have for graduate students, especially those in history.

(Hide Review...)  Has outlived its usefulness in an Internet Age
Reviewer Permalink
I work as a freelance commercial writer. Since I deal with words for a living, I've built a substantial library of reference material. One would think that my Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) would be threadbare from constant use.

If only that were the case.

Our language bends and flexes, and most writing references keep pace with those changes. The CMS may, in fact, bend and flex with the best of them. Unfortunately, most people won't know if it does because accessing the wealth of information in its pages is dramatically crippled by an inability to locate the information users need.

The index for the CMS fails to consider how users actually search for information. The beauty of a Web-based search engine comes through its adaptability to user input. Different groups of keywords will lead a user to the necessary information. But the rigid indexing system of the CMS defies this kind of use. Its creators thought they knew how to sort information, but time and again, I simply cannot locate the information I need to know by using the index. This makes even simple info searches trying. In the end, this lack defeats the entire purpose of the CMS. Like the joke about the sound of one hand clapping, what is the usefulness of a printed reference you can't reference?

While some grace must be afforded the compilers of the CMS for sheer breadth of information, I'm routinely baffled why some obvious needs aren't covered. For instance, the correct rules for writing lists of items don't take into account those lists that use something other than colons to precede them. The CMS doesn't cover multiple-response lists preceded by ellipses or by a partial sentence. That seems to be a terrible oversight. If these simple lists are missing, what else isn't covered?

Likewise, the usage examples seem obvious compared with the more complex sentences I'm asked to write. A wider variety of given examples would help. Otherwise, I'm left to wonder if more than one rule exists to cover the sentence I'm writing and I just can't find those other rules in the CMS.

The University of Chicago Press offers an electronic version of the CMS, but the reviews here at Amazon universally denounce the interface. This is ironic, since the proper interface makes or breaks a reference. We may not think of a paper book as having an interface, but it's the poor interface of the current print edition of the CMS that garners it this lukewarm review.

IF one can find needed information, this reference excels. Yet that inability to find what one needs in the CMS makes it less than useful in today's Internet Age. I find more proper grammar usage using search engines than I do paging through the CMS. I hope its editors are listening.

I had to buy this book for an editing class I'm taking at school. It's a nice book to look at--they've done a great job with the layout--and the sections you need really aren't that hard to find. The thing that I can't understand is who made the University of Chicago the all-powerful English prescriptivists? I realize that there needs to be uniformity in writing (a lot of it, probably), and I recognize that Chicago does allow for some flexibility of choice in certain areas, but I think it is often too nit-picky. Maybe that's just because I don't understand the rules very well or I don't have any real-life editing experience. My feelings about it are very mixed. Sorry I don't have much of a definitive review, but I will say that I loved when another professor of mine saw me with the book and told me "That is a book I refuse to open!"

This book is an essential tool for anyone who wants to make sure that their writing is at the highest level in terms of grammar, syntax and so forth. It is the one book endorsed by the publishing industry as the "bible." If you write, fiction or nonfiction, you must own this book!

Yes, The Chicago Manual is the bible of correct, literate, non-newspaper writing, and the 15th ed. includes some of the latest accepted evolutions in usage and style. If the 15th ed. is your first Chicago Manual, great.

However, its big list price may be justifiable for first-timers and corporate buyers, but it's not OK for loyal, independent CM-ers.

If you have the 14th ed. and use it as often as I did, you'll be inclined to upgrade to the 15th--at the new, hefty price. And then you're likely to question, as I did, whether that price is worth tossing the 14th for the 15th's "Updated material throughout" . . . its "New coverage of journals and electronic publications" . . . its "Comprehensive new chapter of American English grammar" and "Reorganized chapters" (who needs *that*?) and--my favorites--"New diagrams" and "Descriptive headings." Is there really that much new stuff? Have the language and the rules changed that much since I last used the 14th?

No. This is the college-text game at work: Update and rearrange the last edition so as to render it obsolete. Except the 14th really isn't obsolete.

After using the 15th for some months now, I can say there's just not enough truly new stuff to justify it as a replacement. But I'd have been happy to buy a smaller paperback "addendum" edition, as some publishers do, to update my 14th. So why didn't UCPress *also* publish something like that, at an appropriate price, for writers and editors (like me) who already have the 14th?

Look up "money, large amounts of, 9.28."
