Orginized and clear explanations of the subject. It is not not a book for fun reading but its a study book - I try to go thru one knowelege area in one week. Its not that easy for me, requires constant concentration and self control but I have chosen whis way to save money on courses. Going to sign up for the exam soon and will write on my results then.

A great companion book for CAPM exam takers. The book made the Project Management principles easy to understand. The online tutorial is very useful as well. I can say I could pass the exam because of the book. A word of caution though: There are few things the book might not have covered and also the actual questions are a little tricky on the exam compared to the one on the book. But overall its a great value for money and takes you very close to passing the exam. Put a little more effort and you will do just great. Good luck.

I passed on the first try as the title suggests. Much of the credit is due this book. There was no need for an expensive week long crash course. I am very pleased with the purchase. I think the book might have missed the mark on how much attention to give to the Communications Management process as I scored "Below Proficent" in this area. However, I did well in all of the other areas. Obviously, I would recommend this book.

This book explain concepts in very lucid way. Questions after the chapters and final exam were very similar to the CAPM exam. Not only tells you your answer is wrong but also explains why it is wrong. I do recomend reading PMBOK guide along with this.

This book is okay. I failed the first time I took the CAPM exam, but passed it on the 2nd time. I give this book 3 stars because it gives you 2 weeks of trying out the CAPM test exams online for free. The key to passing the test is to memorize the inputs, tools, and outputs for all 9 processes. I only used this book to pass the exam. I didn't read the PMBOK Guide.

I just passed the exam last night. I used this book for 90% of my studying. I was surprised to find the practice exam questions in this book are completely different then the questions found on the PMI exam (I had assumed the questions would be somewhat similar). The positive side of doing the practice exams found in this book and on the weekly trial via the website helped me absorb the information I needed to understand PM body of knowledge and successfully pass the exam. Overall, this book did very well in helping me understand the PMI standards and ultimately gave me the edge in passing the exam. I recommend this book to anyone looking to gain the CaPM.

(Hide Review...)  CAPM / PMP Book by Andy Crown 99.9% Identical

I would recommend this book for passing the CAPM but if you want a higher score don't buy the CAPM book but rather the PMP book offered by Andy Crowe. The books are 99.9% the same. The PMP expands on some examples that you are tested on within the CAPM exam. For instance , the Network flow diagrams are covered more by example in the PMP book rather then in CAPM Book. These were required on the exam. I have completed the CAPM and I am now looking forward to obtaining the PMP credential. My advice : Buy one book and read some of the extra 20-35 pages of extra material and be better prepared for the exam. If your eventually looking forward to taking the PMP or are looking for a better study guide this book isn't for you.

Regards,
VP,CAPM

Just a few hours ago, I returned home from passing the CAPM exam well above the % required to pass. I have to be honest, this book made the difference. I cannot compare this book to other CAPM prep books, as this book (and the PMBOK) were the only books I used, but if your goal is to pass the CAPM exam, and you do not know which book to buy, this one should get you a passing grade. I took the gamble to self study for the CAPM rather than spend $1500+ on a crash course or online course, and this book significantly mitigated the risk of failing the exam ;)

Get it, you'll like it.

Excellent book for the CAPM Exam. For my CAPM exam, I used this book with Dr. Sanghera's CAPM Exam Quicklet (for the practice exams). These two books were enough for me to pass the exam. You should also go through the PMBOK Guide either before reading this book or after.

The book, in conjunction with the 2 week online review, were a tremendous help for me. I just took the CAPM exam yesteday, and as the title states, I passed on my first try. That's not to say that this book alone will be enough to pass. Prior to reading this book, I read the complete PMBOK and completed a 23hr online course to satisfy the CAPM education requirement. This book was a great way to refresh and recap all that I had studied over the past few months. I would certainly suggest making the investment.

(Hide Review...)  Very Handy CAPM Study Guide
Reviewer Permalink
I found this book very useful: not only to pass the CAPM exam but also to understand some project management concepts. Used the following resources to pass the CAPM exam:
1. PMBOK Guide. This is a MUST
2. This book. Makes the concepts in PMBOK easy to understand.
3. Dr. Sanghera's CAPM Exam Quicklet. Very realistic questions and some other very useful features.
Now, I believe I could have done with just the PMBOK Guide and the Quicklet, but I do not regret. Glad that I bought this book, and even after the exam, it's going to stay in my book shelf. If you do need a study guide for the CAPM exam, this is the one.

Maybe three or 4 star for the book, but 5 stars for the free trial insite.velociteach.com access.

I bought the PMBOK. It was confusing. I bought this book and only read the front matter and back matter (ie glossary, etc.). However, what really did it was strategically registering for the two week insite.velociteach.com access exactly two weeks prior to the my exam (yesterday). Every night for the last two weeks I reviewed certain areas in the CAPM online course, took the online practices tests and simulated exam. The practice and simulated exams were extremely similiar to the actual CAPM exam.

I decided to take the CAPM three weeks ago. I received this book with trial online material access about three weeks ago. [...]

This book is well written and provides the reader with a clear explanation of the PMBOK guide, which by itself is not easy to decipher at times. I would recommend using this book and the PMBOK guide to prepare for the exam. The free 2week trial of the online site that comes with the book is also very helpful.

If you are like one of me who panicked the first time you try to read PMBOK then this is for you. I would say first read this book to build the confidence of PMI's project management process and then read other books. Again as other readers have mentioned, this book and website alone is not enough for exam. My suggestion is don't read the questions/practice exam very often, the question type might get stuck in your mind. The questions in exam are presented way too differently than what is in book, I guess PMI keeps changing the pattern very frequently. Overall it was very useful and helped me pass the exam.

I have to say that this book could have saved me over $2000 in a Project Management class that I took. I came out of there completely lost after 5 days of unfamiliar terms and concepts. This book made things so much clearer. The author speaks as though he is conversing with you and not lecturing. I poured through every page for about 1.5 weeks. It was not easy, but it did give me the tools to pass the exam. At the end of the book, it is VITAL that if you intend to take the exam, you have to use the 2 week trial of the Insite simulation exam online. THis was another tool that allowed me to pass the test. Great book, great resource.

Overall, this is a good prep course - very clear (something PMBOK may borrow from), easy-to-understand. The only thing to remember is - you cannot use this book alone (and the web-site) to prepare - the questions in the book are different from the questions on the exam. The exam questions are more detailed. My suggestion is - get another book in addition to this one. I used PMP prep course.

I just took the CAPM exam on Dec. 20th and passed it on my first try. This book by Andy Crowe simplifies the terms found in PMBOK by demystifying the world of Project Management terminologies. It was a great read and I recommend it. I have taken a series of courses in project management but they were not sufficient for preparing for the CAPM exam. If you have no prior PM education, you may need to spend more time reading both this book and PMBOK, but it is still worth the extra effort. THUMBS UP!!

I bought this book after reading the PMBOK Guide. I have to say it is very easy to comprehend, and the author gives some real-life scenarios. I also used every bit of the free 2-week trial session to InSite. I really enjoyed this book and it did contribute greatly to my PASSING THE EXAM on 12/16. I am so excited!!! As I have filed some other books away, the CAPM Exam book will be left in arms reach along with the PMBOK Guide. Thank you Andy Crowe!

I have taken a 12-week PMP study group session with my local PMI chapter and read the PMBOK (3rd ed.), and now I am reading this book. I have to admit, I am VERY impressed, especially with the free 2 week trial to inSite. I am taking my CAPM exam on Dec 21st, 2006 and feel very prepared after reading this book. I have not found 1 spelling mistake or questionable error in the book, it's very easy to read and comprehend. I think you would pass this exam if you gave yourself 1-2 months of preparation. In short, look no further, buy this book and you won't regret it.

Reviewer Permalink
This book builds on the authors success in developing his predecessor book on passing the PMP test on your first try. This book applies the same techniques to the CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management) test.

The book begins with a description of the test. What the test covers, the format of the questions, the procedures to be followed -- all those little details that will at least ease your mind as you go into the procedure.

After this, the bulk of the book is on the details upon which you will be tested. This varies from 'What is a project?' through the specialized terms and definitions, then through the various management sections (Scope, Time, Quality, Cost, etc.). It finally concludes with a sample test. This test is in the same format as the real test, but is different that immediately after the test are the answers. The answers are more than just A, B, C, or D. There is a short paragraph explaining the answer in more detail.

Finally the book includes with a free trial subscription to 'InSite' a comprehensive online CAPM preparation tool. The normal cost for a one month membership in InSite is $99.

I highly recommend studying this book if you are serious about being CAPM certified. I passed on my first try and would recommend after each chapter reading the associated chapter in the PMBOK. The two week insight trial that is included in the purchase of the new book is amazing. It allows you to test your knowledge in the various knowledge areas and take an extra simulated exam, the book also has one. I spent a 4 week period reading the book before I took the exam and it was well worth it.

If you're planning to take the CAPM exam, this is the book for you. PMI says that the CAPM focuses on the PMBOK Guide - the processes, inputs, tools, outputs, etc. This book breaks down the important information from that source and presents it in a way that you can understand. Crowe does a great job of explaining concepts and terms in a language that you can relate to.

The book has lots of test questions, too - and these are followed up with excellent explanations. If you buy this book and study hard, you'll pass the CAPM.
