We gave this to our daughter for her 9th birthday and the whole family has enjoyed it (grownups, 9, 7, 4 and baby!) We've enjoyed listening to birds we don't normally hear and matching birds to the sounds we hear all the time.

This is a great book. I showed it to birding friends and I bought three more and two others have purchased four more for gifts to friends and relatives that enjoy bird watching. It's great for kids to get them interested in bird watching. The Backyard Birdsong Guide: Eastern and Central North America (Backyard Birdsong Guides)

This is the bird identification book I, personally, have been waiting for all my life. Easy to use, easy to share with kids to introduce them to the joy of hearing that bird and then seeing it. Easy to share with bird experts, who love filling in whatever is always left out.And a joy to share with anyone in between (like myself and my friends) who just thinks birds are so much fun. Sincerely, S. Phaeton

A great book with an innovative way to engage the children in learning about birds. A descriptive passage is written about each bird. Also an authentic audible sound can be created simply by pushing a button. Great for adults as well.

The illustrations & descriptions for each bird are done very well. The sound quality of the individual bird songs is excellent. This book is a great way for anyone to begin learning about common backyard birds and their songs.

This book is great for a novice or amateur birder of any age. Some of the smaller birds are very difficult to find in the trees, but their songs are heard over and over again. If a birder has it narrowed down to a few birds, hearing the calls and reading the descriptions in this book will be very helpful in identifying which bird is there. The maniacal owl call is worth the purchase of the book by itself. There are books with CD-ROM's and DVD's that have bird songs, but this one is easy for those of us who are not equipped with Ipods or other electronic devices to take outside.

After moving to an area where I wasn't familiar with the songbirds this book has been a treasure. The songs are so real some of the birds come to sit nearby.

When confused what bird is singing or calling in your backyard, this
helps alot to identify and learn. Now you've learned a new bird to recognize. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-29 01:50:29 EST)

I got this for my Dad for Fathers Day and he loves it. He was impressed with the quality of the recordings and the different meanings of the songs that some birds sing.

Accidentally on Purpose: A One-Night Stand, My Unplanned Parenthood, and Loving the Best Mistake I Ever Made
This bird book is an excellent choice for children and first time birders. The descriptive text gives enough "serious" information without being overwhelming, as many bird books are. Moreover the recorded bird sounds are great. Children, with their vast memories, are fascinated by it. I find my children (8, 6, & 4) were able to pick out individual birdsongs from the usual backyard chatter after just a few listens. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-17 23:44:37 EST)

I LOVE this book! How often is it that you cannot see the birds you are trying to identify very well? I find it is more likely that you are able to hear them more clearly than they can be seen, and this book allows you to identify by sound, it's great. It can also be great fun to excite most cats and drive them a bit crazy. I hightly recomend this book to everyone.

This book is a great way to become familiar with the birds that surround our environment. It is an easy access book. The sound and mini speaker system works very well. No more looking in books that try to describe in words the bird's sound. No more trying to locate the specific bird sound on a CD. Just look up the bird and punch the number and there you are, quick and easy. It is a great book at a great price! It is a must for anyone who enjoys the little winged angels that visit our yards. The illustrations are also accurate and beautiful.

This book is suitable for all ages! The bird calls are clear and easily recognizable with what you hear in your "backyard". Good learning tool.
You can call birds with these recordings and they will answer you. Easy to use and worth every penny. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-23 02:43:45 EST)

I bought this guide and the much larger "Bird Songs". I prefer this one by far. There are more song comparisons and much more in depth descriptions. It's also a manageable size. I love it.

Sitting on my porch I can now tell what bird is singing it's song. The audio is excellant. The book also has clear photographs and great details so that you can easily identify each bird. The one downside is if you live in the Central US, you need to purchase both the Western and Eastern North America books in order to find all the birds in this region.

This is one of my favorite coffee table books. We live out in the country and this book has helped identify many of the local birds that pass our way.

I just got Backyard Birdsong Guide by Donald Kroodsma in the mail today and am right here again buying TWO more for gifts.
My cat sits nearby as she is going ballistic over these bird songs. I have FOREVER wondered which birds are our 5am 'sing before the dawn' artists, now I know! I highly recommend this book. It shall be available for all our guests here at The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast to enjoy. We have large maples out front, a 3 level pond out back, Magnolias, Pecan trees and a park across the street. For this - we have birds, lots and lots of birds singing their little hearts out day and into the night! This is the perfect gift! PERFECTO! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-01 01:34:37 EST)

Wow!! What a terrific book . . . the text, the sounds, the selection of species, the layout . . . everything works perfectly together. I opened my pre-release copy, intending to spend just a few minutes and return to it later. Two hours went by, and I was still reading and listening; I couldn't stop turning the pages.
Of course, I went right to my favorite birds, reading the text and pushing the buttons to listen, as I expect that most people will do. But then I settled in and went to other species, and then I read the introductory pages. The information there will bring you to a whole new level of enjoying these remarkable creatures. I have struggled for years to identify birds through their song, aided by mostly meaningless mnemonics as these are presented in most guides. For the first time, Kroodsma's full description of each species' song gives readers enough detail and context to help them understand what they are listening to. These birds come to life in the text and then the icing is the lovely songs themselves. Push the loon button and you are immediately transported to remote northern lakes. Push the phoebe button and hear how he sings his two different songs. Hear how animated a pewee is at dawn compared to later in the day. Try the wrens, thrushes, warblers, sparrows. They're all there and more, in the text and at the push of a button! This is a truly special book. I'd give it ten stars if I could. Now I have the perfect gift to give to my friends to show them why I've always been so thrilled to hear a singing bird. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-06 01:35:47 EST)
