"Softly he brushed my cheek, then held my face between his marble hands. ''Be very still,'' he whispered, as if I wasn''t already frozen. Slowly, never moving his eyes from mine, he leaned toward me. Then abruptly, but very gently, he rested his cold cheek against the hollow at the base of my throat. As Shakespeare knew, love burns high when thwarted by obstacles. In Twilight, an exquisite fantasy by Stephenie Meyer, readers discover a pair of lovers who are supremely star-crossed. Bella adores beautiful Edward, and he returns her love. But Edward is having a hard time controlling the blood lust she arouses in him,because--he''s a vampire. At any moment, the intensity of their passion could drive him to kill her, and he agonizes over the danger. But, Bella would rather be dead than part from Edward,so she risks her life to stay near him, and the novel burns with the erotic tension of their dangerous and necessarily chaste relationship.Meyer has achieved quite a feat by making this scenario completely human and believable. She begins with a familiar YA premise (the new kid in school), and lulls us into thinking this will be just another realistic young adult novel. Bella has come to the small town of Forks on the gloomy Olympic Peninsula to be with her father. At school, she wonders about a group of five remarkably beautiful teens, who sit together in the cafeteria but never eat. As she grows to know, and then love, Edward, she learns their secret. They are all rescued vampires, part of a family headed by saintly Carlisle, who has inspired them to renounce human prey. For Edward''s sake they welcome Bella, but when a roving group of tracker vampires fixates on her, the family is drawn into a desperate pursuit to protect the fragile human in their midst. The precision and delicacy of Meyer''s writing lifts this wonderful novel beyond the limitations of the horror genre to a place among the best of YA fiction.(Ages 12 and up) --Patty Campbell 10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Stephenie Meyer Q: Were you a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? What are you watching now that those shows are off the air?A: I have never seen an entire episode of Buffy or Angel. While I was writing Twilight, I let my older sister read along chapter by chapter. She's a huge Buffy fan and she kept trying to get me to watch, but I was afraid it would mess up my vision of the vampire world so I never did. I don't have a ton of time for TV, and my kids get rowdy when I have on "mommy shows," but I do have a secret fondness for reality shows (the good ones, at least in my opinion). I always TiVo Survivor, The Amazing Race, and America's Next Top Model. Ack! I can't even answer the movie question. I can't remember ever seeing a single vampire movie, outside of clips from Bela Lugosi movies on TV. I don't like true horror movies--my favorite scary movies are all Hitchcock's. I could not put this book down. I read it in less than a week, then rushed out to buy New Moon and devoured it in less than a week. I would have read them in just two days if I didn't have to go to work! I love the characters and the stories are amazing. There is real depth to the characters, they are real and relatable. I am only saddened by the fact that there are only 4 book in this series.

I read books for fun and this book became an obsession. It brought me into another world. I actually felt the feelings of each of the characters. After I was finished with Twilight it left me burning for more. I have never really been a person who was into the whole vampire type thing but the way this book is written I can say I am actually a fan now. Even if you don't think you can get into this book based on the fact you don't like supernatural things, think twice because I guarantee you will love this book and series. I definately recommend this book.

I loved this book. I am approx. 30 yrs old and was given this book as a birthday gift rom my 16 yr old cousin. She raved about how great the book was and that I would really like it. I took it and never thought about it until I needed something to do at work (other than work). I really got caught up in the fantasy that Meyer's portrayed. I noticed that alot of the 1 and 2 star reviews focus on the reality of the situation and the lack of Bella's positive image for young girls. I did not see it that way. I believe that when you read a book, you have to fully engulf yourself in the world that the author is creating. If you can do this and put all comparison's to "real life" aside, then you will love this book. I loved that this book was romantic, but not too detailed that I could not read a few lines to my nine year old daughter, Taylor. She loved it too and we are both anticipating the movie, which comes out a day before her 10th birthday.

I guess I asked for it by choosing to read a young adult book. Simply stated: If you are over the age of 15 this book is way way too foolish and immature for you!! Pages and pages of mindless, annoying, teenage angst. I have never found a book character as irritating as Bella. She has no depth, nothing to make her stand out as anything special or likable. She's not talented, smart, clever, or funny. She's stupidly clumsy and rather bitchy and not too friendly for being a new kid in town. I found myself wondering why someone as OH SO perfect as Edward would fall for her. He's got the body of a 17 year old boy but shouldn't he have the wisdom and maturity of a 100+ year old man since he has been around for that long? Seriously. Why did HE act like a teenager??
One minute they are glaring and glowering and scowling at each other, and the next they are professing their deep (and unhealthy/ psychotically obsessed) undying love. Also if I had to read one more time how gorgeous, perfect, flawless and stunning Edward was I would have screamed and vomited. It really was torture to finish it. I will not be reading the rest of the series. If I had a daughter that was in her early teens I would NOT want her reading this book. It really paints an unhealthy picture of love. It's almost saying love is like this dark obsession and it's OK to let everything else go when you are that young as long as you've got your man. And don't even get me started on the fact that she'd rather become a blood-sucking crazed vampire than stay with her mother and father and try to make something out of herself. Bella just got worse with every page and went all the way to the end when she got red-hot mad at Edward for taking her to the prom! Then she cried because she thought they were all dressed up so he could sink his teeth into her and have his burning venom turn her into a vampire and they can live happily ever after; Yes, the two of them hunting grizzly bears and mountain lions together with their bear hands and teeth and shredding them apart and drinking their blood. The end. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-07 09:53:11 EST)

I know they say don't judge a book by its cover, but that's actually why I decided to buy this book. I loved the contrasting colors and simple design of the cover. I bought this book on a whim, never having heard of the author or the series. I was actually pretty disappointed. I read almost any kind of book, both within the adult and young adult sections, and I almost always enjoy/like books I read. This book was just boring, and repetitive for me (the language itself is just very repetitive and dull); and not truly original. I have read other books with similar plot lines, although if the characters had been likable for me, I could have gotten over that. I didn't like the main character... she was just very shallow and I didn't understand her obsession over Edward. Edward was just a pretty face, pretty boring in terms of all the male characters I've read about over the years. It's been a long while since I read the book, and I have had no desire to even pick it up again (in fact, I've lost it). Usually I will either completely reread a book, or reread scenes I liked, but with some books I just put them down and forget about them once I'm done. I would have done this with Twilight if not for all the press about it in Entertainment Weekly and elsewhere, and all the hype about it. I always hate it when a book I read is mediocre for me and just the best book ever for someone else; I always feel like people who think that's good won't even look for anything better. I've known people who read only one series of books for fun, such as the Harry Potter books (which I found good, but not up to the hype), and never read anything else. I don't want that to happen with Twilight - people need to read more, there's so many good books out there.
I recommend checking it out from the library if you're curious as to whether or not you'll like it. Just because it fell flat for me doesn't mean it won't hit the spot for you. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-07 09:53:11 EST)

I foolishly bought this knowing it was regarded as "young adult" reading. If you are an adult, this book will bore you to the core. There is no build up of excitement, or realistic language. And it does seem to linger in spots that don't call for it. I can see this being a good teenage read or for someone a little more sensitive to profanity, but seeing as I am not a teenager anymore and not at all sensitive to profanity, I can't fully appreciate this book for what it is. I should really give it one star from an adult perspective and four for young adult. I felt it lacked a little in personality.
If you are looking as an older person, for a more upfront vampire mystery and more to the point read, I'd go for Charlaine Harris's "Sookie Stackhouse" series. It kept me interested, which is what good books are about. I rated that one with a four, but am going to change it to a five the more I think about it. It's a great and exciting read. A fast paced, strange, yet more believable love story. And the show 'True Blood' on HBO based on the book series is awesome. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-07 09:53:11 EST)

When I first heard of the book I wasn't sure if I wanted to read it. I'm an avid fan of Anne Rice and I was really apprehensive on reading this series. But when I got through the first book I could not wait to read the next one. I recommend this book to anyone that would like this kind of genre. It has its own glamour and suspense that captures you till the end. Its no where as good as Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles but it's still a must read.

Personally, I tried very hard to resist Twilight. I generally don't go for Young Adult Lit., and I generally don't go for fads. But, I gave in. And I am not ashamed to say, I loved it! I love all the books. What I don't get is why people cannot just take these books for what they are...stories. I highly doubt Stephanie Meyer was aiming at the Pulitzer Prize when writing this series. So, why does every pretentious wanna be book critic on here have to rip them apart for not being literary masterpieces? Why can't people just enjoy a good book because it is that...a good book? Maybe there are some crazies out there who feel like they can never fall in love with a real man now that they have met Edward Cullen. But so what? There are always going to be people who think fictional lives are better than their own lives. That doesn't take away from what these books are. GOOD STORIES; a good escape from the everyday boredom of life. Isn't that what books are supposed to be? If the only reason you read a book is because you are waiting to rip it apart, you should just quit reading. Reading is entertainment, and these books are highly entertaining. I think Meyer's should get her props and everyone should just shut up about the supposed lack of literary merit.

I usually read Thriller/Romance Novels. Heard about this saga in my used book store and never dreamed I'd read this type of story but so glad I did. I absolutely loved it. Never have I finished a book in 2 days but its true I could not set it down. I carried it everywhere I went.
I was holding my breath at the end. Stephenie is an amazing writer. Can't wait to start the next one. By the way I'm 60. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-07 09:53:11 EST)

When I first read this book I loved it instantly. I thought it was so cool and romantic, until I read it for the second time. Glittering Vampires? Who comes up with stuff like that anyway? Edward has no personality at all and is obsessed with kepping Bella safe. I don't see why he is so attracted to Bella besides the fact that she smells good. Bella is whiny and weak which can get really annoying. She can't live without Edward or she'll jump off a cliff. Wow. This book has serious flaws.

Let me warn you. If you start reading this book, you will want to make sure that you have purchased the entire series of 4 books. This book is a slow read at the very beginning and was my least favorite of the 4, but once you start reading the Twilight books you just can't put them down. the second book is much better and the 3rd was my favorite, but I loved the series so much that I have recommended it to everyone I know.
I really liked this book. I was surprised, I am 44 and started reading the twilight series by chance just for something to do while my husband watched football. I became so engrossed in the books that I read all 4 in just 6 days. The amazing thing is I am not a reader. These were the first books I have read in more than 5 years. I cannot reccommend these books by SM enough. They are so vividly discriptive and she teases you so well by writing almost what you want to happen and then pulling back at the right moment. If you love suspense and romance then Twilight is the book for you. Stephenie Meyer tells a story of your everyday girl moving from sunny Phoenix to Forks, an almost non-existent and dreary town. Bella isn't expected to like it and isn't anxious to live with her dad, who she hasn't lived with in seventeen years. Bella has to adapt to many changes. She has mixed feelings about the first day of school, but all goes well. Her biology lab partner who is standoffish surprises her. After weeks of getting to know her class mate, Edward Cullen, Bella falls in love with him. She is irrevocably in love with his ravishing beauty, his inconceivable talents, and his ceaseless love for her. She knew there was something different about Edward that set him apart from most boys. He thirsted for her blood, but little does Bella know that with falling in love with a vampire comes severe and dangerous consequences. The star-crossed lovers will not let anything get in the way of their love for one another, even death. To put their love to the test Bella must choose between saving her mother's life and her love for Edward.

I like a good Vampire romance. They are light and good way to wind down before bed. I don't even mind decent fiction for young adults as there are good stories to be had; so I bought this book because of the reviews. Well, it's awful. Is this really what our teen aged girls are like? I wasn't and my daughter wasn't. This is just plain pathetic.

I loved Twilight! Stephenie Meyer did a wonderful job with this novel. It will keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters seem like real people and you find yourself really connecting with them. Out of this whole series this is by far my favorite. You get to meet the mortal, Bella who could be any girl that is reading this book, and every girl's dream guy, Edward(who just happens to be a vampire)!

With all the hype going on about the Twilight movie coming out, I decided to see what all the fuss was about and actually read the book. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the book actually was.
The story is definately written for the teenage crowd and anyone in high school can identify with the characters right away. It is well written in that it uses humor to get around what could be some awkward moments. The book gives the reader the perspective from the vampire's side as well and that is a side which is not common in books since they are usually portrayed as evil. I would recommend this book for someone looking for an enjoyable read, but something not too serious. It was a good break from some of the other reading that I have been doing. Check out the first chapter and I think you will be hooked. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-07 07:45:12 EST)

Some people needed a new series to claim after JK Rowling finished the last Harry Potter book, and for some this may be it, even though this series is four books rather than seven (there might be a fifth; we Twilight fans can only hope). You read the hype: first love, juniors in high school, girl human, boy just happens to be a vampire, just another day in Forks, Washington. What you might not realize is the draw this book has for young and old; entire families are reading the series and talking and commenting on what they have read. A Morman mother wrote the series and I recommend books 1-3 for young adults (middle school), but even though book 4 is TASTEFULLY written, as a mother I would hold this one for the high school readers.

I first read Stephanie Meyer's "Host" and loved it so much I couldn't wait to read more from her. I purchased the "Twilight Saga and read all four books. They were all great.
She writes from a first person prespective and you come to love the characters, especially the innerworld of the heroine. She begins as a teenager with all the self-consciousness, weaknesses, and foibles of a teen. She is the definition of a clutz. Through each successive book you watch her grow and mature into a really wonderful adult heroine. These books are full of monsters, many of which I came to love. I can't wait to see what Stephanie Meyer comes up with next. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-07 07:45:12 EST)

The book Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is a fascinating novel. From the beggining the simplicity of the characters and plot make it an easy read but it becomes a first class novel when Stephanie Meyer uses her writing style and structure. Bella, the main character of the first book in the twilight series, is a clumsy new girl at Forks High who takes a fascination in a group of very handsome vampires. Bella shows the readers a great perspective. Twilight is not just for the vampire lovers though, it is a delightful love story when Edward(one of the handsome vampires) and Bella get to know one another. A twist in this relationship keeps the reader holding their breath to make sure Edward doesn't take a chunk out of Bella's neck. The sense of family arouses as Bella gets to know Edward's whole family of nice vampires. When some other human-eating vampires come into to town it is not fun and games anymore because Bella is running for her life. Will she make it? Find out in Meyer's Twilight, the start of another phenomenon.

I love to find new (to me) authors. When I first heard about this book and the author, I was very excited, but when I realized what it was about, I resisted reading it. Vampires? Ick. This was my first 'fantasy' read. The hype overcame me, however, and I relented. I finished the book in a matter of 48 hours! I stayed spellbound and thoroughly enthralled throughout the entire book, down to the very last page. It was a very good story with excellent character developments and visual descriptions. This was definitely not the old Bela Lugosi type of vampire story--it was very contemporary and intriguing. As for the fact that it is directed to young adults, I have to say that I never thought of it in that way, despite the characters being in high school. It was a suspenseful, entertaining book, with refreshingly little (maybe one) curse words or graphic sexual situations. I already have number two in the series and am anxious to get started on it!

To you, Gentle Reader, I present my review of Twilight by Stephanie Meyer.
Warning: Here there be *Spoilers* (but of the mild variety) and also some sarcasm. By way of introduction, I will state that I am an actual teen girl who actually likes to read. Funny that, huh? This book is about vampires, but not the normal scary, evil vampires. No, Edward Cullen and his family are the good, vegetarian vampires, meaning that they only feed on animals. This reimagining of the vampire myth gives these creatures not only supersuperhuman strength and speed, but also some abilities like precognition and telepathy! Did anyone mention that they sparkle? Yes, sparkly vampires. The sparkly wow-factor only adds to their physical and aesthetic perfection, for we must understand that vampires are the epitome of beauty; it makes them better predators. This incredible beauty makes it hard for our nice clan of vampires to make friends. Poor, sad vampires! Luckily, this family is the best of pals; they like to play baseball together. They may do so however, only when it's thunder storming. "Why?" the Gentle Reader might ask. Well, the answer is thus: our vampires are so fun-loving that they cannot restrain themselves whilst playing a game of stickball--they hit the ball so hard that it sounds like a thunderclap! Enough of our clan of friends, let's go on to meet our lovely female lead. Isabella, or Bella as she prefers to be called, is the perfect emo MarySue. For those who may not be aware of the definition of MarySue it follows: A MarySue is a female character who is perfectly perfect and wondrously beautiful, yet our dear MarySue cannot see it. This character archetype is most typically seen in the genre of fanfiction. Bella, beyond being unaware of her complete perfection, goes so far in as to complain about her awful life and generally just be a mope. She's always scowling, glaring, or arguing, particularly around Edward. Edward Cullen is our male lead in this cast of characters, and he is smitten with Bella from the moment that he smells her. Yes indeed, Bella smells delicious, but Edward is so very very strong and so very very good, that he decides to form a relationship with his temptation, warning her all along that he is quite dangerous and repeatedly telling her that she is marvelously magnificent in every way. Following their meeting, the general feel of the book switches every page or so from angst to teenage sexual tension and then back again. This reviewer was thrown for a loop, however, around page 350. To my surprise and literary appetite's pleasure, a genuine plot was provided! Yes, our very own plotline was created, I assume for the benefit of Gentle Readers like yourselves. Though I say `genuine plot,' I by no means intend to convey that it is a complex plot. It's the general bad guy wants our female lead, and does capture her, but of course our male lead swoops in as he always does to save the day. In conclusion, Gentle Reader, this book, while amusing in its fanfiction-esque style and a quick enough read, is no great piece of literature, even of the YA variety. One of my 8th grade students suggested this series to me. I am quite glad she did. Once I began reading Twilight, I was hooked. It took me one week to read all four published in the series. I, at first, did not feel any warmth for Edward, but then as I began to understand him better, I became lukewarm about his role. The overbearingness of his character is frustrating, and I never quite got used to it, and the co-dependency of all of the characters is a bit disarming for a middle school female to read, but I must say, if the book/s can be read and discussed intelligently, it's great to have yet another avenue that young teens can follow in reading. The vocabulary and sentence structures are more complicated than what teens usually read. I'm happy with Twilight and those that follow, although the last of the series is, I believe, 150 pages too long.

OK yeah, this is billed as being a "young adult" series. But the plot and characters are so complex, intriguing, and imaginative that they seem very real, despite the "otherworldly" attributes of some. Fans of the genre from all age groups are bound to become quickly absorbed in the wonderfully descriptive story that Meyers has created.

Review of TWILIGHT by Stephanie Meyer (see her website)
TWILIGHT #1 Little Brown, September 2006 When her mother wants to follow her new husband on the minor league baseball circuit, Isabella (Bella) Swan decides to move in with her father in cold and damp Forks, Washington. The school there is much smaller than she was used to in Phoenix, and most of her clothes are unsuitable for the colder weather, but she's resolved to suffer through it. It doesn't hurt that her father has gone out of his way to buy her a new (used) pickup truck. It also doesn't hurt that she's suddenly the most popular girl in the school, with any number of guys lining up to ask her to the dance. Bella has eyes only for Edward. There's something odd about Edward and his siblings. First, they sit in the cafeteria without eating. Second, they're far more beautiful and move more gracefully than ordinary people. Bella's sense that something is off grows stronger when Edward rescues her from a sliding truck by putting out his arm and stopping the truck--creating a deep dent in its steel at the same time. Although Edward wants nothing to do with Bella, he seemingly can't keep himself away. Gradually, Bella and Edward admit their feelings toward one another--and Bella learns that Edward is a vampire--but the nice kind who feeds on animals rather than on humans (although he had gone through a serial killer phase in his past but he's pretty sure he can now control himself--even if being with Bella stresses his control to the maximum). When a vampire baseball game attracts some not-so-nice vampires, though, Bella becomes the bait in a intra-vampire war. TWILIGHT has become a huge hit and it's easy to see why. Author Stephanie Meyer writes well enough, keeping the reader engaged. Bella's transition from apparent social outcast (whom everyone in the school wants to be friends with or date) to the one girl who attracts the perfect guy every other girl wants offers a huge amount of wish fulfillment for the target audience--teenage girls. Fortunately for Bella, she doesn't have to do anything to be worthy of Edward's love--there's something inate within her that makes her his dream woman. She can be as snarky as she wants and he simply can't resist. I had some issues with the story. First, I didn't see Bella and Edward relating as human beings, but simply being consumed by a sensual attraction that flowed from (in the case of Bella's attraction to Edward) his natural predator camouflage or (in the case of Edward's attraction for Bella) a perfect prey match. I would have liked to see that instinctive attraction deepen by shared interests--but I really didn't get this feel. Second, Edward's self-condemnation seemed forced. He's taken the pledge, after all. It's not at all clear that he feels any remorse for the killing he did during his rebellious youth, so, why does he claim to be so bad? Could it be simply that Meyer needed a reason for Bella and Edward to fight the attraction? Most of TWILIGHT consists of watching Bella and Edward court--with the two obsessing over one another and claiming eternal love, with Edward complaining about Bella's tendency to get herself in fatal situations from which he must rescue her, and with Bella failing to pay attention to her classes because she's so interested in looking at Edward (I can certainly remember classes spent staring at attractive members of the opposite sex when I was in High School so I can relate to this). In the last quarter of the book, Meyer appears to decide that the story needs a bit of action and introduces an evil vampire of the human-killing sort--who instantly is attracted to Bella as food. The transition from pure love story to fantasy-action is a bit abrupt. In Meyer's world, all it takes to become a vampire is a quick inoculation with the vampire virus, a couple of days of horrible pain, and that's it. Being a vampire means you're effectively immortal (unless chopped into small bits and incinerated), have incredible beauty and grace, become even more beautiful in the sunlight (not sure why this is pro-survival for the vampire species, but it's a reason vampires hide), superhuman strength (think the ability to lift a truck), superhuman speed (faster than a speeding baseball), and don't even have to kill people if they choose not to. So, why shouldn't we all become vampires? I found TWILIGHT to be highly readable and I can certainly understand its popularity--because of the wish fulfillment it offers. For me, I would have liked more focus on what makes the characters worthy of one another, the action-adventure to start earlier and feel less like an afterthought, and a bit more fully fleshed out world-building. I have to say, I read all four books in this series in just over a week. This series is NOT just for young adults -- I think anyone with an interest in the supernatural and/or emotional love stories would enjoy every book in the series. For instance, I am 39 years old, and I gave "Twilight" to my 63 year-old mother to read when I was done with it (we're both vampire fans). Normally I have a very short attention span, but this series kept me on the edge of my seat. It was well-plotted, suspenseful, emotional, well-written, and a joy to read. I just finished "Breaking Dawn" this evening, and I am experiencing a huge letdown because I don't have any further books to read in the series! Stephenie Meyer, please, please, please write another book in the series -- the one you hinted at at the end of Breaking Dawn!

I am completely baffled by some of the negative reviews of this book. I get the fact that not everyone will love it. I appreciate that people have different likes and dislikes but, WOW some of these reviews were really very harsh. It's a fantasy people, and a love story at that! Need I remind you guys that this was written from the perspective of a 17 year old girl? Sure it's about love, infatuation and curiosity. In fact that's what I adore about it!
At first I was not thrilled with the idea of reading a book that was based on a high school girl. After all I'm 30, have a husband, a child and a mortgage. What could I possibly like about this book? It didn't take me long to be absolutely hooked. I found myself up at 2 am on work nights just trying to get one more chapter in before I absolutely had to go to bed. I would rush home from work and throw myself into the story again. A surprising fact to even me was I loved the simplicity of the story. Lucky for me that all the books were out when I finally picked this one up, so I had the opportunity to read one after the other without the wait. And with each book I felt the same. Hooked! I couldn't take my eyes off the pages. I have even gone back and read the entire series again! I passed these along to my mother in law a bit embarrassed that I was reading a series geared towards "young adults." She had seen me with my eyes glued to the pages and convinced me to share with her the series that captured my attention. I was thrilled to find out that this 50 something felt that same addiction to the series. If you're looking for a good read the Twilight series will defiantly capture your interest no matter what your age. The perfect blend of fantasy, romance, and supernatural thriller! I thought this was going to be another corny teenage love story. This was not the case. Meyer did an excellent job connecting the main character's physical and emotional reactions to the reader. When Bella's heart raced and breathing stop, I felt the empathy. I couldn't put down the book. The suspense piled up exponentially through the first half of the book. By the second half of the book, I had fallen in love with the two main characters. A perfect balance of romance, suspense and action. On with the next Meyer book...

THERE ARE NO SPOILERS HERE...First of all, let me say that I LOVE this series - I finished all four books in less than 2 weeks. Yes, I almost literally flew through them. They are that compelling. But, there are some negative things as well. So, I'm going to do my best to give a very balanced review so that a potential reader can make up their mind appropriately.
Good things: 1) I have often referred to Stephanie Meyer as the Dan Brown of Young Adult Fiction. She's a mediocre writer at best, but one hell of a story teller. The story of Bella and Edward is compelling, exciting, and passionate. She knows how to keep you reading. 2) Edward is, in many ways, the guy every girl dreams of: he's beautiful, romantic, sexy, understanding, intelligent, unselfish, and protective. If you've been missing a good romantic male lead since Angel left Buffy, Edward will do it for you. 3) Alice's character is wonderful. She's a great balanace for Bella, who tends to be rather morose. She's also the kind of best friend you wish you had or perhaps were yourself. 4) Meyer has the readers desperately wanting Bella and Edward to be together. At least, in my opinion, you are able to see things as Bella does, that vampires aren't creepy and that joining Edwards' world would truly be perfect. (Let me be clear -I don't believe in vampires, but Meyer's ability to make you accept, without question Bella and Edwards' story is the mark of a good storyteller. 5)You are never taken away from the story. I find that in typically adult fiction (which is usually quite terrible), you have to deal with all of this insipid dialogue and useless characters just to fill pages. Every page of Twilight moves you from one point in the plot to the next. 6) The Cullen family. Vampires or not, you truly come to love this family - a family that acutally cares about one another and accepts, without question, someone who is different from them. They accept Bella as Edwards' love and welcome her to the family. We should all be that way. 7) Bella and Edward do not have sex. While I'm not a prude by any stretch, I appreciate the fact hat Meyer has made the abstinence a part of the vampire tale (perhaps by choice to make it morally acceptable to her audience?) While you want these Bella and Edward to experience that kind of passion together, I think it was bold of Meyer to keep them pure. Bad things: 1) I don't really care for the character of Bella. I agree with one reviewer who commented on her name: Bella Swann - beautiful swan? A pretty name, no doubt, but I would have selected a different last name. Sounds a bit too campy for my taste. She's also whiney, selfish, and a weakling. And she can't make up her mind. 2) Jacob. I know some people love him, but I think he's arrogant and pretty annoying. I recognize that Edward needs "competetion" but really, you know from the get-go that Bella and Edward should be linked together. I also get frustrated with Bella for being so patient and forgiving of his behavior towards her. 3) The relationship Bella has with her mom. I think Meyer set it up this way so the mother figure could be out of the way so Bella would have less parental guidance as she spends so much time with Edward. No one in high school has that kind of relationship with their parents. I had a pretty free reign in high-school, but I never would have been allowed to run all over the place, from city to city, etc. without parental guidance of some kind. It was too far-fetched for me. 4) Another reviewer wrote that Bella was kind of a sociopath and that it's almost scary how she wants so desperately to be a vampire and follow the guy around everywhere - no life, no career, just him. Personally, I think it's fiction and we need to cut Bella a little slack, but I also agree that Bella's character is not necessarily a good role model for young women. Bella was kinda of a weakling and it would have been nice to see her as a stronger character. I highly, highly recommend this series. You will become engrossed in the world and find yourself wishing occassionally that you were there yourself. Enjoy the books for what they are, don't feel guilty if you get swept away by the romance of it all. This book is the reason to read fiction. While you read, you can leave reality for awhile and enjoy another world. Yes, there are some negative points, but nothing that should take you away from the truth of the story. Go ahead! Take a bite! :-) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-05 08:06:13 EST)

Bella is an ordinary girl with ordinary divorced parents. Living in Phoenix, Arizona, she is very used to the city, heat, and dryness. Each summer she visits her dad, Charlie, in Forks, Washington. She was used to visiting this boring town, until one year when she travels to Forks during the school year. At first, she was sick and tired of the long, boring, and muggy days. This ended when Edward Cullen sat next to her for the first day in chemistry. She kept wondering and wondering about Edward Cullen, Edward Cullen. Sooner or later she finds that she isn't dating a normal human, but a flawless vampire.
During this novel, Bella gets herself into many twists and turns. This book is a suspense, romance, and fantasy all in one. This is a fenomenal book because it always leaves you wondering what will happen next. You keep reading through their great moments and through Bella's horrifying ones. This book is over in no time! Twilight is fantastic! :) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-05 08:06:14 EST)

If you're looking for a deep thought-provoking book, this is NOT the book for you. This book is a fun read. I would call it a "guilty pleasure" that I won't brag about reading. I wouldn't allow anyone under 15 to read it since, like other people commented, I don't think the female heroine Bella is a positive role model.

Didn't expect to like this book really, but got it anyways because of all the hype I'd heard about it.
I've now read the entire series twice and just love these books!! I'm a stay at home mom of two so I'm not the typical target group for this book but I've even got my mother hooked on them as well. Kuddos to Stephanie Myers for her original view on the vampire world!! I do hope she decides to finish and publish "The Midnight Sun" (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-04 07:29:12 EST)

I started reading this book upon the recommendation of my brother-in-law's girlfriend. She (unintentionally?) "warned" me about the series by describing it as "perfect for beach reading." And I'm glad she did. Because, otherwise, I would have been very frustrated and possibly disappointed.
I enjoyed this book for what it was... Fluff, pure and simple. It reminded me, sometimes unpleasantly, of the teenage angst that I experienced over a decade ago in high school. It reminded me of what it felt like to sit next to the boy I liked in biology and wonder if he liked me back. The tension that existed before that first kiss. All there. All (usually) there to make me chuckle and reminisce. But, as I mentioned, sometimes it made me cringe, roll my eyes, or want to throw the book across the room. If I was looking for a strong and likable female character or a realistic love story, this was not the book to read. Bella, to me, is utterly unlikable. She's unfriendly to her "friends". She's self-deprecating to the point of infuriation. She is aimless, uninteresting, and uninterested. Oh, except, of course, when it comes to the object of her infatuation/obsession -- her vampire boyfriend. She's... Well, she's kind of how I was when I was a teenager. Except I didn't have vampire boyfriends, just your normal human kind. And often totally moronic ones at that. Which makes my motivations back then even less understandable. Which brings me to that boyfriend of hers... Until I read the partial draft of Stephenie Meyer's Midnight Sun (found at http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/midnightsun.html), I really had very little understanding of why Edward was interested in Bella, beyond her obvious attractive qualities to his vampiric senses. Sure, all the boys at school thought she was the bees' knees, but wasn't that just because they were stuck in a small town and she was fresh meat? Wasn't that just what attracted Edward too, but more literally in a tasty-smelling meat way? As it turns out, Edward did have a bit more motivation behind his attraction. The fact that he couldn't hear her every thought intrigued him. And that distracted him long enough from her tasty smell to find something else that he found so attractive -- she wasn't just another shallow meat puppet. He thought she was brave. And selfless. And beautiful. On all of these accounts, I think he's wrong, but at least now I know where Meyer was going with this in his mind. And it's at least a little more understandable. But only a little. Nevertheless, this is not a love story. This is a story of infatuation and obsession. And that's fine. I don't have to buy that they're in love in this book. Meyer tries to prove that repeatedly over the next 3 books. ;) So I guess my recommendation is the same as my brother-in-law's girlfriend's... Read this if you're looking for something light. Try not to get too annoyed with Bella. Don't think too much. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-04 07:29:12 EST)

I can say as a 35 year old female living in the US...that I have never encountered anything so addicting in all my life. I do not usually read that many books...not enough time really. But it took me less than a week to read all four of these books, along with the rough draft of Midnight Sun on Stephanie Meyer's website, (5th book). I think Breaking Dawn was my absolute favorite of all the books but cannot wait for Midnight Sun to be finished :( . And as far as the movies go...I think they picked a brilliant cast and could not have done any better. I am on my third trip through the books and cannot wait for Nov 21st ;) If you have not started reading these books then I suggest that you cancel your plans for a week and strap yourself in for an incredible ride :) Enjoy!

First of all...I do not know what a lot of people's issues are with this story. Personally I feel it's a twinge of jealousy on their part that this book is so captivating.
I was skeptical about it at first. Not because it was a YA novel. That certainly didn't dissuade me from purchasing this -- I read young adult fiction all the time-- I was mainly put off by all the hype, glitz, and glitter that this book was receiving. I couldn't possibly believe that this story was so amazing. Dwelling into the first few chapters, I will admit, I was a tad bored. I was extremely disappointed in the way the author chose to word herself. It all seemed very simple and strategically placed as if she were worried that it wouldn't sound right. "When I got home, I unloaded all the groceries, stuffing them in wherever I could find an open space. I hoped Charlie wouldn't mind. I wrapped potatoes in foil and stuck them in the oven to bake, covered a steak in marinade and balanced it on top of a carton of eggs in the fridge." Bella seems very well schooled in the art of taking care of herself at such a young age of 17. I don't remember ever even knowing how to cook a steak at 17. As the story matured, so did the author. Her descriptions suddenly flourished to life and I was enraptured by how mesmerizing she could write about her characters. "...His skin, white despite the faint flush from yesterday's hunting trip, literally sparkled, like thousands of tiny diamonds were embedded in the surface. He lay perfectly still in the grass, his shirt open over his sculpted, incandescent chest, his scintillating arms bare. His glistening pale lavender lids were shut, though of course he didn't sleep. A perfect statue, carved in some unknown stone, smooth like marble, glittering like crystal." The story is a very well written account on the depths that teenage love will embark to. She feels she cannot live without Edward, and I of course felt the same way at that age as well. I am extremely excited to read the rest of the series and overall, I would recommend this book whole-heartedly to all of my friends. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-04 07:29:12 EST)

Parts 1 and 2 to this series were very addicting and I finished both in 4 days. However, once I got to book 3, I started becoming very annoyed with Bella. It gets a little old hearing how much Edward adores her and would "protect" her. Please. And she thinks she's so cool. I really like Jacob and I hope she ends up with him and not Edward. I did like both Bella and Edward a lot until I reached Book 3. I suppose they just started getting on my nerves after awhile. I'm sick of them both. Regardless, the series is still entertaining and even though I find myself rolling my eyes every now and then, I would recommend this series to anyone. I am halfway through with Book 3 now and look forward to Breaking Dawn. :-)

This book to me was an astonishing look at the world of macrbe. It groups together two monsters we all at one time or another have been a little bit curious about, vampires along with werewolves which are worked ever so subtly into the plot of the four book love saga. I was very suprised that I would pick up such a book, as the reading of any kind of occult books of any sort never held my interest. This book was a definite JOYOUS exception to the rule! I was unable to put down the first book of the series, Twilight before I had acquired the next book in the saga. I didn't want to miss a beat or maybe I should say heartbeat in this case. Stephanie Meyer has the nack for keeping the reader thinking ahead to the next page before turning it. The author Stephanie Meyer, hopefully will continue in writing sagas in this genre in the future. I could not put any of the books in the series down. 5 STARS Bob Capers bc92650@aol.com

Well, after over one thousand reviews of this book, what can I possibly add to the discussion? Not a heck of a whole lot. Not being a teenage girl, I'm not really the target audience for this book. But I did enjoy it. I did find Bella's clumsiness to be a bit over the top, though. And I didn't quite get why she was suddenly so popular with boys when she moved to Forks. Perhaps that will become clearer in the sequels. Anyway, I did find the book enjoyable, and that's coming from a middle aged man.

I'm a 46 year old woman who was advised to read the 4 Vampire books by Stephanie Meyers, by my sister and two work friends. I am now on the second book and I must say that they are by no means anywhere near as good as Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. However, I take into consideration that these books are written for a much younger demographic (although, so was Harry Potter and I enjoyed those books immensly!). Nevertheless, I'm determined to finish reading all four books. I read for pleasure, so who cares if the books are juvenile romatic cheese-balls -- it's strictly escapist reading anyway. (P. S. If you enjoy morbid humor, try reading Christopher Moore's "YOU SUCK" and "BLOOD SUCKING FIENDS" -- both are also about vampires and absolutely hilarious!).
