In this little treasure, Thich Nhat Hanh, the renowned Zen monk, offers timeless insight into the nature of real love. With simplicity, warmth, and directness, he explores the four key aspects of love as described in the Buddhist tradition: lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and freedom—explaining how to experience them in our day-to-day lives. He also emphasizes that in order to love in a real way, we must first learn how to be fully present in our lives, and he offers simple techniques from the Buddhist tradition that anyone can use to establish the conditions of love.
Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk, is an internationally known author, poet, scholar, and peace activist who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King Jr. |

This is a short book about love, kindness and mindfulness by the eloquent Thich Nhat Hanh.
It teaches us how to open our hearts to our loved ones, friends, and even strangers. It is the perfect book to be inspired to give and receive true love. I love his advise on opening up a dialog with a loved one by simply saying something to the effect of, "My love, I see you are suffering. When you suffer, I suffer. What can I do to help you not suffer?" Highly recommended. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-30 06:08:17 EST)

I truly loved this book, simplistically written and simply encouraging. Totally opened the doors for me on other books written by Thich Nhat Hahn.
I am sure you will enjoy this easy read! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-14 05:10:22 EST)

True love has learned me more about love in each chapter than any other book I have read.
Share it with the one you love and both of you can practice True love:)and your life will be happier and you'll understand mindfulness in a deeper way. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-07 05:12:21 EST)

When settling in to read a book on love by a buddhist monk, I expected a fair amount of theory and not so much practical advice. I was wrong! In each chapter, the author first defines the components of true love. Then he gives readers solid, yet simple, steps to take to find/create that love. He even ties in references to Jesus to give the book even broader appeal to those not familiar with Buddhism. It's a great read, and much much much is packed into this relatively tiny book.

I just finished reading Thich Nhat Hanh's "True Love: A Practice for Awakening the Heart." This little 100 page meditation simply changed my perspective on many things.
Talking about a powerful read on how to show and demonstrate love in your life. It all comes back to mindful presence, being there, not just in body, but in full absolute awareness. A true demonstration of love is not monetary or even a gesture but the action of being truly present. The book really helped me see things differently. If my soul was a gorgeous red onion, and the sweet, yet spicy heart was my true essence, then True Love peeled away a couple of layers to help me see things better. And it put the way I care for others into a perspective, some of which I really didn't want to see. I think the book made me a better person. There many fantastic meditations, which get your mind to calm itself and focus on true love. It focuses on making oneself loving in your actions towards wife/husband, etc., rather than other-centric love. Though Buddhist at its heart, one of the things that makes Hanh so accessible is his ability to tie his meditation and theory back to Christian theology. In essence, he knows his reader is Western and caters to us. The book begins with the four aspects of love, which Hanh describes as: 1) Maitri: Loving kindness 2) Karuna: Sympathy, or the ability to ease others pain 3) Mudita: Joyful loving 4) Upeksha: Freedom through love Really, quite a good book if spirituality and/or matters of the heart are important to you. This is the heart and soul of Thich Nhat Hahn. Every family ought to have one of these and study it like a bible. Great gift for a significant other, or a parent.

The copyright of this book is 1997. Eckart Tolle's book "A New Earth" came out in 2005... 8 years later. This book is like the pocket book for "A New Earth". Eckart Tolle goes into greater dept in his book on the same topics that are mentioned in Thick Nhat Hanh's book. "True Love" gets right to the heart of awakening the heart. I especially enjoyed the chapters on The Energy of Mindfulness, Caring our Pain (the pain-body Tolle talks about), Telephone Meditation and Getting Rid of Our Concepts (egos). A small but powerful little book. Highly recommended.

Thich Nhat Hanh is so incredibly insightful, and really conveys his wisdom here with few words.
A short, uplifting book that changes my attitude and helps me to understand true love whenever I pick it up... which is often. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-04-07 05:30:19 EST)

A student passionately recommend this book to me. While I haven't had time to read it, I did turn around and gift my copy and it was very well received.

Amazon needs to come up with a thesaurus for typical review expressions. I am desperate for something else to say other than "this book changed my life", but I got nothin'!
This was my very first book on Buddhism and it's effect on my life has been profound. The whole thing is like 10 pages long but Thich Nhat Hanh's teachings helped me to fully appreciate and enjoy a very loving relationship I was in at the time of purchase. But it was also there for me when that relationship ended and I needed to take good compassionate care of myself. And most importantly, it's been with me ever since to make me aware that love is all around. Open your heart. Open your heart. Open your heart. That is the message. For reals. It's good. Buy it. This is a very lovely book and one of the best books that I have brought for myself. I help me to love and have compassion for myself and for other people. When you love yourself, you can truly change yourself and pick the right decisions and choices :-) When we talk about the topic of true love . .. love is not exclusive bwt two person, but true love is the wish for happiness for every living beings and by how we live life and the way we walk and talk. I highly recommend it to everyone :-)

The is a wonderful book that really can help awaken your heart. I read this book twice imediately after I got it, and will read it many times again as time goes on. Thich Nhat Hanh is an amazing writer and human, and phrases his prose in a way that can touch any heart. It is a quick read with much impact.

Thich Nhat Hanh brings his clear thinking, kind heart, and seemingly unending knowledge base to a subject at the center of all our lives.
In identifying love as presence, characterized by aware listening and gentle speech, he maps a route all of us can take out of negative and dangerous thought patterns to positive forward movement. Beginning by bringing loving kindness (and mindful breath) to ourselves we are able to connect with others in meaningful and fruitful ways. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-19 05:32:09 EST)

This book is short and easy to read. However, it is not easy to do. I bought it to help my relationship. It does. It shows how easy it is to be present for another person and has short gathas to help to keep the idea in our reality. However, it is not easy. I keep the book nearby and read it to remind myself how to really love another person.

The essence of true love is understanding, says Thich Nhat Hanh. This is not a dry thesis. Hanh shows how this truth can be practiced in concise, clear, and helpful ways. The practice begins now. He gives specific strategies for relating to others in ways that eliminate pain and allow one to fully experience 'the other'.
If you believe in buying only the books that you can keep re-visiting, this is definitely a great deal. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-11-08 05:23:29 EST)

I agree with another reviewer of this book that it is a little piece of poetry. However, this book is not meant to be just for information or for its teachings to be turned into belief or to be idealized, but instead the teachings in this book were meant to be practiced. Become love for your spouse, your children and everyone around you, and see life blossom...for you and all of those touched by true love!

I was feeling rather ill, going through a night of errands, dizziness, concern, days stress combined with hard fights for breath and at the end of a journey looking for things for my daughter to forward her love of physics for she needs this right now, this book revealed itself. So it came home with me. It is a lovely meditative piece informing me of the way love operates for this Buddhist monk. I am too tired to relate all the sections and they are so very good, what I wanted to say was how I've allowed myself over the time since having cancer surgeries and illness to more than ever try to practice what I teach , to employ love in the daily life, to feel and extend love, to find the wonder in another, to notice the blossoming, the opening of heart one to another, to share and accept as well as hear and move through time and space in another way. I found this to coincide with my spiritual or really personal acceptance of my situation and my humanness.. This book even addressed the harder spots, the negatives , the restraints, doubts, foibles of my human situation. He must sit writing these books in a state of contemplation that is like an eye open to others being as the world's days are shaped....sorting and distilling down to core pieces. Truly a very moving read, a slender piece of poetry.

This is a little book you can read within a couple of sittings, and if you are open to it, it will open your heart.
It's not a book about relationships or about fixing problems -- it's about changing your perspective, becoming still and present to your experience. You don't need to search for love elsewhere -- if you can consistently practice what Thich Nhat Hanh calls "mindfulness", you will *be* love and you will see it everywhere. When I was done reading this book, I felt a sense of peace and presence and a wonderful knowing that all the love I ever need is right here in my own heart.
