The trend trading is match with my style. I have read a lot of books about this such as, Michael W, Dr. Elder's book and more.. that are great books. For "Trend trading for a living", They are a step by step cleary information which is easy to follow and give me more detail to complete my trading system.

A great book with real insight. I particularly like the fact that he actually provides about 10 scan setups to help locate stocks which fit various bull and bear configurations he describes, then he explains how to trade them. Very useful, its at my desk everyday.

Psychology, money management and an edge with a positive expectancy is all you need for trading success. The trading strategies in Dr. Carr's book give you that edge and are also easily adapted to end of day trading and longer trends. The Dr.'s passion for trading and teaching his readers to trade is obvious throughout the book. I've been trading trends for a very long time and I now have a book that I can recommend to people who want to know how to succeed using this method.

It was an ok book. I expected alot more from the author. I don't like books that self promote all through the book. I bought the book, obviously I like you and what you represent. I do not need to be reminded of that every few pages.

It could have been alot more. There was some useful information - but the promotion gets in the way.

(Hide Review...)  In Response to Dr. Elder
Reviewer Permalink
I am honored that Dr. Elder would take the time to respond to my recently published book, "Trend Trading for a Living". For the record, the title was chosen by the publisher for reasons not disclosed to me (my own title suggestion was rejected). With all due respect to one whose work I respect a great deal, I'd like to correct his primary assertion: my book has a lot to do with his, for it was his classic text, "Trading for a Living", that got me started on the road toward building techical trading systems.

As I state in my acknowledgements, "...I am indebted to Alexander Elder, master teacher and market psychologist. Dr. Elder first revealed to me the elegance and logic of technical analysis as applied to price charts. Many of the of the key concepts embedded in the systems explained in this text come from his seminal work...now considered a classic in trading literature" (p. xv). Later in the book, in the introductory chapter, I devote two paragraphs to explaining what I learned from reading Elder's work (p. 17). The principle of "divergence", so central to several of my systems, I learned from him.

Of course, our books differ markedly. I offer 10 complete trading systems (5 long, 5 short) whereas his book offers 3 systems (triple screen, parabolic, channel). Elder is primarily a futures trader, and his examples are from futures markets, whereas I am exclusively a stock trader. One-fifth of my book is devoted to trend trading stock options but his only mentions options (on futures contracts) in passing. And Elder's book offers a catalog (very helpful) of over 20 technical indicators and sentiment readings while I've tried to simplify things by discussing only those indicators I've found to be most reliable for trend trading (trendlines, RSI, MACD, OBV, CCI, Stochastics, Moving Averages, and candlesticks).

Regardless, I hope that Dr. Elder would read my book and learn there just how much his work has meant to me. I owe him a great deal of thanks and hope to meet him one day soon to express that.

I have placed all my other trading books back on the bookshelf and this book accompanies me everywhere I go. If you are looking for simple methods with big returns, Dr. Carr's book fits the bill. I have read close to 100 books on trading, but this is the first book that provides beginning-to-end trading strategies. I papertraded Dr. Carr's strategies for a few weeks before I realized I was missing out on some big returns. Now that I am trading with "real" money, my trading account has seen a big boost using the trading methods from this book. Sorry Amazon, but I may not be buying any more trading books!

(Hide Review...)  Dont waste your money on this self promotion book
Reviewer Permalink
I must say that I was excited about this book at the beginning. However the more I read, the more I felt like I was reading a flier from another get rick quick site.

The book started with an admirable goal of opening the door for you to trend trading. Yet as I read more and more the self promotion becomes more and more SHAMELESS. Towards the end the book literally asks you to submit a "positive" review and promises you more resources for your "trouble".

Well, there is nothing, and I mean NOTHING here that you can not get over the internet by typing "Trend Trading" or something close to that.

Please save your money and thank your self.

Good Luck

(Hide Review...)  Excellent addition to any trading library

This book is in the tradition of Alexander Elder and Nicolas Darvas, some of the authors trading inspirations.(Mine also). It is a book that shows how to trade volatile high beta stocks using the trend as a guide. It is full of technical trading systems, with no fundamentals here you can ignore news reports, economic and business forecasts, P/E ratios, and book value. What you look for is chart set ups for both long and short positions.Great examples are given and how to find them. The book reinforces the "Price is reality" school of thought where price reflects the companies prospects, if the market likes your company's prospects the price goes up, if it does not it goes down. I agree it really is that simply. The book uses four sources of input for its systems:
Price patterns.
Moving averages.(I find these highly valuable). 20 and 50 day SMA
Technical Oscillators MACD, stochastics, RSI, CCI, and OBV.
Japanese Candlesticks (My favorite charts)

The book also covers the 10 habits of highly successful traders that are crucial for success. I really got a lot out of his examples of charts and showing the bullish and bearish trends based on the 20 and 50 day moving averages. He covers option trading in three chapters and shows how to trade bullish and bearish trends along with using straddles during option season.
Price and volume-that is all you need to know to trade well. Always go with the chart. All that is needed to be hugely profitable in the trading game is to be right more often than wrong. I have traded stocks for over 5 years very successfully and would strongly recommend this book all who wish to trade for profit or live the dream of trading for a living.
He wraps the book up nicely explaining how the market can build your character by making you more patient and humble. His best advice is that the market will do what it will do, just go with the flow and befriend the trend.

This is an excellent book for a beginner. I've been trading for about year, and finally believe that this book may be the break through I've been looking for.
I've read books from Toni Turner, Dr. Alexander Elder, Mark Douglas, and other knowledgeable and excellent traders/authors . However, I find this book to be the most comprehensive and detailed in regards to strategies and methodologies.
This may be the best investment of my young trading career.
God's blessings to all in the field!

I agree with the reviewer who said the book could have been condensed. 300 pages is a bit long, and just makes it a little more cumbersome to carry, etc. However, that in and of itself does not make or break the book.

I had subscribed to the Befriend the Trend newsletter and wound up losing money. However, I thought Dr. Carr had a pretty good feel for the market, so I wanted to try the book to see if I could understand the whole trend trading idea.

The book seems like a data dump of all the possible ideas and strategies for trend trading. That is a bit much in my opinion. Too much information for a book focused on teaching people the methods. I think books by folks like Bill O'Neil and Steve Nison are a little simpler and make it easier to understand when you are learning a new trading strategy.

I think this is a good intro book for someone who wants to learn a little about market psychology and a unique trading strategy. Dr. Carr has a lot of relevant ideas, and explains some of the market intricacies well. However, I don't know if I will try trend trading or not.

I hope this made sense. BTTT said they would email me a free trading manual if I left a review so this is it...

(Hide Review...)  This book is a real "stand-out".
Reviewer Permalink
I would like to highly recommend "Trend Trading For A Living". I have over 100 books on my shelf on technical analysis and this one is a real "stand-out". From the moment I picked it up and started browsing it, I could tell it was something special. I love the way the book is laid out and the charts are easy to read and understand. Dr. Carr explains all his strategies thoroughly and takes you by the hand until you understand them. He gives you 5 ways to look for "high-probability" Bullish set-ups and 5 corresponding Bearish ones. On top of that, he explains to you how to trade them with options, in order to reduce risk and increase leverage. As if that wasn't enough, there are 2 lists in the book, entitled, "The 10 Habits of Highly Successful Traders" and "Dr. Stoxx's (Dr. Carr's nickname) Rules For Trading Stock Options", both of which are worth the price of admission alone.
If you've been floundering around trying to figure out a good way to make money in day-trading (or swing-trading), this book will help you immensely. I can almost guarantee that once you've finished reading it, you will have a sharper eye for seeking out "high-probabilty" trading situations.

(Hide Review...)  way too vague
Reviewer Permalink
this book is 300 + pages, if the margins, type size, line spacing were of normal size the book would be 75 pages. there is no way to cover psychology of trading, trend trading, indicators, options, entries, exits, money management and many more aspects of trading in such a brief book. every chapter was entirely too vague about real life trading. if any novice were to put money in the market by following this book, kiss your hard earned money good bye. try dr. elder's book "trading for a living", read the psychology section first, then if you think you want to trade then reread it again. if you still want to trade finish the book, then read marcel link's superb book "high probability trading" then read "bollinger on bollinger bands" then read daryl guppy's "trend trading", then read j. james wilder's "new concepts in technical trading" so you can learn "adx", then read steve nison's "the candlestick course", then read william o'neil's "how to make money selling stocks short". then read them all again and again until all your highlighted areas are automatic when you look at charts. then find more books to read. i've been reading studying and practicing for 2 years since i first tried trading, thinking i knew what i was doing, only to lose my hard earned money. i've read alot more books than i've listed, those are the best yet. i feel i'm close to being ready to try the market again. "trend trading for a living" wouldn't help, especially after reading the thorough, specific books listed.

Positives: Specific set-ups and the formulas to scan for them using stockcharts.com.
How to create a watchlist of trending momentum stocks and finding a potentially low-risk time to enter them.
It's one of the few books that discusses different methods of actually taking profits, which anyone who's tried to trade for a living knows that's far more important than entries.
A discussion of trading options in a very clear and simple manner.

Negatives: No backtesting provided to give the probabilities of success, drawdowns, etc for the set-ups provided.
It could have been better had the author spent a few pages discussing position sizing and money management of one's account instead of the last chapter about his "utopia" world of future trading.
The constant referencing of his website/newsletter gets annoying, but I guess one has the right to advertise in their own book as much as they can.

It's a good book but I can't say if it's worth the $40 since I got it for free...Obviously the biggest factor leading to the success of these set-ups is recognizing the trend and having the discipline to stick with it.

I've known Dr. Carr for several years and have had many exchanges with him on the markets. His book quickly reveals his complete understanding of the way things work. For those who have been at trading for a while, you will still find lots of "meat" here. You will also get a few chuckles from his early days of market interest, as they reflect the very things most of us did as we began to trade. It's all here in this very well written book. I highly recommend it to anyone who might be wondering about trading because Carr leaves nothing out that a new trader must know and he presents it in clear, well chosen words. Buy and use this book!

"Trend Trading for a Living" is an excellent book.
It provides a step by step road map which is easy to
follow and use as a foundation to develop your trading
skills. As a novice I've read numerous books which targeted
the entry level and intermediate level trader, covering stocks and
options, These books were helpful in providing concepts and strategies,
but missed the mark in showing one how to screen stocks and scan
charts in a systematic way to aid you in recognizing opportunities.
Trend Trading for a Living succeeds by providing those missing
dynamics. It also gives you the confidence to apply the valuable
skills you learned.
This is an invaluable book which should be in every trader's
library. Thanks Dr.Stoxx (Thomas C). I look forward to feasting
on your next book.

This book is very strong. It is full of very specific and practical ideas to make money today (or if you are a newbie like I am - tomorrow) with all the steps you will need to do it. TC is not wordy leaving this one of the clearest reads you will have on such topics as this. The book is an efficient and pointed read that does not lose the readers attention nor confuse at all.

One caveat for the newer trader, as am I, the book assumes a level of knowledge which are, to be fair, truly basics in topics such as technical indicators, candlesticks, options handling, so I coupled this book with other more introductory and definitional texts and websites to great effect. I would tell more novice folks to go for it and try this book, his suggestions are very doable and his instruction crystal clear.

Be clear, this book is practical and about making money and I am convinced it will for traders inclined to this type of system and willing to put in the work, be they new traders or old pros.

I should also note that I subscribe to TC's service and he is incredibly helpful and quick to reply to questions. It's easy to tell you are dealing with someone of integrity who values his customers and that also counts for much in my opinion.

Reviewer Permalink
I've read a lot of the "how to" trading books aimed at the novice to intermediate level trader, including Elder's books (good but outdated), Toni Turner's books (ok but too pedantic at places), and Alan Farley's "Master Swing Trader" (the most sophisticated but overly complicated) and this book by Carr is by far the best. "Trend Trading for a Living" gave me exactly what I was looking for: a simple system to determine general market direction, and 10 complete, easy-to-follow, fully explained and illustrated systems for trading stocks both long and short.

Does it work? Well, let's just say that his market direction system would have told me to sell my longs in early December and start shorting the market. I wish this book had come out about 2 months ago!

Yes, I highly recommend this book. As he says, nothing in here is "get rich quick", but with these systems in place and the discipline to stick to them, anyone can "get real rich real slow"!
