This book is filled with Exercises, which is great.
What it lacks is detail. Details about why or how the exercises really work. It's just a very general "this works on your hamstrings" without the "this is why the exercise is effective".

If you are at the very beginning of your training and have never done sports before in your life then this is a good book for you. If your looking for more of a stratigical more informational book then dont bother. It does give te reader a little insite on the MMA life style and mentality. It is also chock full of quotes form famous people and photos. It takes up alot of the books volume actually is photos and quotes. But mostly about what muscles to target and many ways build them. Has a chapter on nutrition, endurence and a small incomplete chapter about enjuries and mentality. If your looking for something more indept, try something else.

This book contains everything you need to know when it comes to fitness for mixed martial arts and combat sports. Almost every single exercise that has existed in the history of the world for every single part of the human body is in this book. There are many combat sport-specific drills, but there are also your typical gym fitness routines. Even if you're not a mixed martial artist and don't have any plans to be one, this book will still serve your needs as a fitness enthuasist. There is a chapter for every muscle group, which contain about 15-30 different exercises each. There are also sections on diet and nutrition, cutting weight, and flexibility, there is the beginning section explaining the philosophy behind being a warrior and why hardwork and preserverance is important. When I say this book has everything, I'm not kidding. Once you have this book, all you'll need to get in shape from this point on is hard work and disipline, such as getting off your butt to go to the gym and staying away from pizzas and bacon cheeseburgers. There are too many exercises in this book, you can't do all of them. Just pick out 5 exercises and let that be your fitness routine for the next three weeks and pick another 5 exercises for the three weeks after that, changing up the routine every three weeks, you should get results in a few months because of muscular confusion(your body constantly changing to adapt to different physical activities).

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Martin Rooney has effectively given us the conditioning road map. The book is of the highest quality, the photographs are excellent, the editorial succint and clear. For anyone who want the conditioning edge, this is the book.

Fighter or not TFW provides a broad range of excercises and drills. The book follows a logical path giving an overview of MMA and then gets into Warrior Anatomy covering warm-ups, training by bodypart (don't confuse this with traditional body split training) and then goes on to cover specific programs, nutrition and injuries. You can follwo the programs or mix it up and simply focus on the areas that you need to work.

As for the weight training aspect, I'm a RKC Kettlebell instructor and consequently the Kettlebell is my tool of choice. I simpy us kettlebell drill and lifts to replace the conventional weighted drills.

The most valuable aspect of TFW is the way it translates many conventional drills into a MA context.

Most important, once you've read the text, looked at the pics...Go Train!

Few trainers or coaches have the education to train someone when it comes to MMA, BJJ, or martial arts in general. This book will serve as a complete guide to exercise as a "warrior" ready for battle as opposed to a body builder or weekend warrior. Although you do need "fancy equiptment or tons of space for a few of the exercises; the majority of the exercises can be completed at home or at a local track. The nutrition section is easy to use as well on the section on how to porperly go food shoping. This is a must have for anyone willing to kick butt on the ring or mats.

This book is exactly as it's titled: Training For Warriors. It features multiple workouts and training routines for each muscle group, important stretches, weight cutting info, and dietary guides. There are detailed pictures and captions explaining the various steps of each workout which makes it very easy to follow.

The training exercises range from beginner level to advanced intensity. You will not be able to do all of these exercises at first. I like that aspect because it gives you goals and challenges to work toward.

Another thing I like about this book is that the exercises are not simply routines with free wieghts or demonstrations on machines at a gym. There are many alternative strength training techniques which do not require a much, if any, additional equipment.

A great aspect of Traing For Warriors is that these excersises target many muscles within a muscle group and not just a single muscle. This allows you to build and strengthen your target muscle(s) together with core, stablizer, and secondary muscles, as opposed to isolating a single muscle. Ultimately that is the best way to achieve the strength of necesary to be a competetive MMA fighter.

Lastly there is some very thorough and detailed information regarding how to diet. It even lays out meal plans for diffent types of diets, whether you be cutting, maintaining, or adding wieght.

Overall I rate the information and techniques in this book very high. I would definitely recommend it to anyone in search of a deeper knowlege of how to properly train to enter the MMA world. This book will serve as a valuable reference time and time again.

This book is primarily a compliation of exercises (some not shown in great detail) organized by body segment/function. The good news is that I've never seen some of the exercises, which is great. That bad news is that I found this book lacking in terms of training science, methodology and planning. A good book, but certainly not what I was expecting.

I personally want to thank Martin Rooney for putting together such an outstanding and phenomenal book. The attention to detail for this type of training is long overdue and Martin went above and beyond the call of duty in that aspect. This book can be used for Warriors of all types and skill sets which is what sets it apart from the pretenders out there. The training program and content will not only challenge you physically but also mentally. Thanks again to Martin for creating such an awesome tool.

Martin Rooney has once again demonstrated that he is the leading expert in the field when it comes to the training of combat athletes. His book, "Training For Warriors", is the most complete and thorough book ever written on the training of MMA athletes. Martin Rooney's "Training for Warriors, The Ultimate Mixed Martial Arts Workout" is just that! Only those who truly understand training can lay it out in such a simplistic fashion. From the ease of the read, to the cornucopia of pictures, it is legible for all to understand, apply, and then reap the benefits from. I strongly encourage anyone interested in the arts or those who just desire to "train like warriors" to invest in the purchase. I promise, you will not be disappointed!

I must say that Training For Warriors is a fantastic book. The photography is great and the exercise program is simple to follow since it maps back to the book. The nutritional section really helped out and made adjustments to my diet. I started the workouts and the hurricane is challenging, but a great change from what I have done in the gym.

I've been reading Martin Rooney's stuff for years and this new book is his best product yet for sure. Not only is the information for everyone out there looking to inprove their fitness, but the pictures are amazing. If you are a serious athlete or just looking for a new routine for the gym you will buy this book. Over the years I have spent lots of dough on videos and other books, but this one by far is the most comprehensive and easy to follow of them all.
The only limitation is that it looks like a book just for fighters, but this book is really for everyone. I hope this review will help people understand that.

Martin is a genius. I have had the pleasure of being able to train with him and he is one of the top minds in the field of strength and conditioning. The man is an Olympic athlete. He has trained numerous players for the NFL combine. He has trained a Pancrase champion(Ricardo Almeida). He has also trained a team to a world championship (Renzo Gracie's IFL Pitbulls).

This book has a ton of knowledge for any aspiring combat athlete. Conditioning routines, nutritional plans, are all mapped out in this book. Pictorials and descriptions for the exercises are also included. This book is a must!!!

I have a school with over 200 students. I also train fighters for MMA competition. I have used these techniques with my students with much success. I have had one world champion in the Ring of Combat organization. I have also had competitors in the UFC, WEC, ShowXC, Bodog Fight, Ringo of Combat, HD Net fights... Martin's techniques have worked for us. Let them work for you.

In my early 30's I have trained in a few forms of martial arts, even taken some training in MMA, and Martin's book is by far the most user friendly around. As a consistent athlete of over 25 years, physical strength and conditioning have always been crucial to getting to the next level. Strength, stamina, nutrition, and mental toughness are all addressed in a common language that suits anyone looking to add further insight into developing their own programs. The straight-forward, yet optimistic style Martin incorporates does much to encourage someone to push themselves, while passing on many tools to help along that journey. Well done.

I typically don't order books without reviewing. When I saw Renzo's name tied into the book, I thought this was worth the great discount. It did not dissapoint.

There are so many books out there in terms of the individual sports and components that make up the sport of MMA (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Wrestling,Boxing, etc.), but no real training manuals as a reference.

This book acts as a quick primer on MMA (Getting your feet wet on terminology, nothing more) refernce guide for "warrior" exercises related to different aspects of the MMA game, nutrition guide, even weight cutting and an 8 week plan.

All in all, a very good and complete book. I can't wait to incorporate these exercises into my regimen, so I can get stared at by the bicep curling, bench pressing guys at the gym.

[...]

"Fitness columnist, Martin Rooney, has consulted for the New York Giants, and trained numerous NFL, MLB, and NBA athletes. As performance coach for the IFL champion Pitbulls, he helps mixed martial artists maximize their strength and speed to win in the ring. With his new book from Harper Collins, he shares the techniques and theory used by the 2007 International Fight League championship winning New York Pitbulls. Packed with a plethora of action shots from IFL events and a forward by Renzo Gracie the large, Training for Warriors is a colorful guide to bringing strength, speed and flexibility to your mma toolbox.

Unlike many mixed martial arts books that are heavy on martial arts technique, Rooney focuses on conditioning and flexibility with exercises focusing on building strength and speed. Renzo Gracie's introduction points out very clearly why you should take an interest in what Rooney has to say, "even though (when he began training with Renzo) he was not very technical, his strength and speed were saving him against some of the techniques". Clearly with the level of athlete involved in professional mma, conditioning and speed can be the deciding factor between closely matched opponents."
