This book is good if you have additional reference to read, but you can't rely on this book alone. This is a thick book but could have been thin if not for some topics that are less important. The good thing about this book is the simple approach on parsing XML, and the deployment of the application. Some topics are good as well, but I can't compare this book to Mastering series or some older books like Visual Basic tips and techniques (jamsa) or that of Peter Aitken. Some good reviews are pointing to Jessie Liberty or Matt Macdonald's book, but I still have to check them out.

a very useful, and well written book; very readable and with enough detail to make it useful but still focused and organized. Little gems of code tricks are spread throughout the book. A very worthwhile book and worth the price.

I am reading Start-to-Finish Visual Basic 2005 and working through the code chapter by chapter, and I love it. I am getting up to speed on VB 2005 after programming mostly in VBA, and this book is the best dang VB 2005 book I have seen, and I have seen quite a few.... Not only is the code quite instructive, but I love Mr. Patrick's refreshing wit--it makes the project fun. Building a complete application from start to finish is a great way to learn Visual Basic 2005. Dry reference books are fine, but this book really puts it all together and makes VB 2005 come alive. Thanks, Tim, for a job well-done! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-12 03:58:14 EST)

Extremely helpful building process, directed at the beginner as it says on the tin. At the end of it I was able to write my own link programmes.

Book is not step by step - I read 100 pages and didn't get to any step by step. And the book's project is a Libray Project - not really a common project (or fun project) I'm likely to see in my programming career.
Book is too wordy - enough to make someone quit programming. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-03-10 08:11:32 EST)

If you are a super newbie, then this is probably not the book for you. Tim Patrick does have some beginner's stuff at the very beginning of this book, but to learn every language concept from the ground up you would need to look elsewhere. What you are going to learn is good programming practices, and how to build a project step by step with the aid of an excellent instructor.
Tim's writing style is easy to understand and the book moves quickly. So, if you are a VB developer that needs to bring your skills up to par in VS 2005, or coming from another programming language this is a good start. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-02-21 10:21:05 EST)

I am a beginner VB programer and I thought that this book would be of tremenduos help. Unfortunately, I found out different when I started using it.
The book was too difficult to follow; in my opinion it went off on tangents. The source code that can be downloaded proved to be a bigger disappointment, as none of it worked as advertised. Particularly where the code snippets were concerned. As I am having difficulties with understanding database programming; I can't get any of my data to save in any of my programs, this book didn't help either. All in all, I would say that this book was an utter disappointment and is geared more towards intermediate users. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-11-28 15:46:01 EST)

Start to Finish Visual Basic 2005 has been very helpful to me. I am in the process of learning VB after programming in VFP for many years. This book, along with its example of developing a complete application, is filling in all the wholes that I had in understanding the nuances of how OOP works in VB. Patrick's writing style is clear, and is written from the aspect of a developer who deals with entire development process. I would definitely recomend this book to anyone wants to get up and running with .NET!
