I love love loved this book!!!! I couldn't put it down once I started it. Read the second one too and it had the same effect. Now I am starting in on her third book. I don't know what I'm gonna do once I catch up to her fourth book. Her style is so readable and relatable. A must have! Enjoy!

"Something Borrowed" is a story told by Rachel, an attorney who lives in New York City, along with her best friend from childhood, Darcy, a public relations specialist. Both women are very different, as you see in the first chapter of the book. Their friendship has been strong because of Rachel's down-to-earth sincerity, and Darcy's go-getter alpha attitude. They certainly are a perfect example of "opposites attract", but you soon see how their personalities clash as the story unfolds.

The very first thing that happens in the book: Rachel's 30th birthday party at a bar in Manhattan, Darcy is sent home by her fiance (Dex) because she's too drunk, then Rachel goes back to her place with Dex and they sleep together. So the story is centered around how guilty Rachel is for sleeping with her best friend's fiance even though she keeps telling herself that it was merely a drunken rendezvous and it meant nothing. But as Rachel and Dex do some soul-searching, it did mean something...

This sounds like a character I would definitely not side with, but Emily Giffin is such a great writer that she actually convinces you to be on Rachel's side. I really rooted for Rachel to find happiness and the things she says oftentimes made me laugh out loud. ;) And even though I didn't like Darcy's character, it was because Giffin wrote her so well as a pretentious snob who walked all over Rachel. In my opinion, I felt that Darcy took Rachel for granted for 20 years and she liked to step on her in order to make herself feel good. Although the one complaint I had about Rachel is her indecisiveness to talk to Dex about their situation. Uugh! Thank goodness Hillary got the ball rolling! ;) She was a great character and much better friend to Rachel than Darcy.

Many things happen in the book with Rachel, like trips to the Hamptons, secret get-togethers with Dex, wedding planning with Darcy, and a lot of flashbacks back to how their friendship began. I have to admit that being an 80's child myself, I really enjoyed the pop-culture references when they were younger. ;) And most of all, what kept me so intrigued is the constant question in my head as I read the book: "When will Darcy find out about Rachel and Dex??" That alone kept me on the edge of my seat.

*SPOILER ALERT!!* I really loved the ending of the book, when Rachel and Dex finally end up together. Dex wasn't that strong of a character in the book, and I wish that he was. But I was rooting for Rachel the whole time and she sincerely loved Dex, as he loved her. Darcy just wanted a trophy husband to show off to her mother and friends (it amazed me that they were even together for 7 years, you'd think that someone like Darcy would jump at the opportunity and marry Dex much sooner!).

I was very satisfied with how the book ended and I really wanted more! So, I also read the sequel, "Something Blue". ;) You can find my full review under that book, but in my opinion I really liked "Something Borrowed" better. To me it had more substance and the characters interacted a lot more. But just to find out what happens at the very end of the story, "Something Blue" is an OK light read. :)

I picked this book up while browsing books by Laura Weisberger. When I saw that she commented on what a good book Something Borrowed was I was sold. I literally could not put this book down. I stayed up until 3 a.m. to finish it which was totally worth the drowsiness I suffered at work the next day.

I found myself making every excuse as to why sleeping with your best friends boyfriend IN THIS CASE was acceptable! I enjoyed every character in this book and cannot wait to read Something Blue.

Emily Griffin has been added to my list of fav authors!

I have seriously never touched anything even closely related to chick lit before in my life. No Shopaholics, Gossip Girl, Devil Wears Prada, etc. However, I do watch Sex & the City. So that's about as much experience as I've had in this genre. I wasn't really expecting a lot since I typically stick to NY Times Notable books lists but I was kind of pleasantly surprised by this book. First of all, Emily Giffin is a decent writer and her words flow very well. It was easy to read-- at no point was I thinking, "Wow, those words sound so contrived".

The basic storyline (****Spoilers***) involves a 30 year-old woman, Rachel, who gets drunk on her birthday and sleeps with her best friend's fiance. Her best friend, Darcy, is the "perfect" one and has always gotten what she's wanted in life including her fiance Dex. Rachel, on the other hand, is too much of a good girl to go after things. She waits for things to come to her. Rachel was a fairly decent heroine for this kind of novel-- smart, hard-working, average looking but with self-esteem issues. Darcy, while certainly seems incredibly one-dimensional as the beautiful but demanding diva best friends occasionally has moments when she seems kind of okay (like their little sleepover after her bachelorette party). Dex is supposed to be the perfect man and therefore a little one-dimensional-- and in his outward appearance he certainly seems like it but his lack of a spine and constant indecision grew very tiresome. By the last third of the novel (and ESPECIALLY after reading Something Blue), I thought Ethan was the better guy in almost every way. The BEST character in the book is Hillary. I'd like to read a book about her.

It's not hard to root for Rachel and Dex since Darcy is quite a pain, but at many points in the book, I still couldn't get past the fact that they are still having an AFFAIR and Rachel is betraying her best friend of 25 years. It doesn't matter if Darcy is a bad person or if you think she deserves what she's getting. It's still cheating and their lack of remorse for such a double betrayal really bothered me. I would've preferred if they had just become really good friends at first and developed feelings for each other instead of going straight to the bedroom.

Another thing is that the characterization of Darcy by Rachel (the narrator) gets progressively more negative as the novel continues and Rachel falls more in love with Dex. It did make me wonder-- if Rachel hadn't been in love with Dex, would she have just overlooked Darcy's flaws and stuck by her? It did almost seem like Rachel really just started picking at Darcy's bad traits to justify her affair with Dex. Not to mention, she has been her best friend for 25 freakin' years. And there was a point made in the book about the fact that Rachel does have an influence over Darcy, which made me wonder, if she really thought Darcy was such a horrible person in life, why didn't she try to tell her that earlier? She had 25 years to do so. Whats wrong with "Hey, Darcy. Sometimes you can be a little too much. Can you tone it down a little?" instead of using it as an excuse to have sex with her fiance. She blames Darcy more and more throughout the book for the way her life has turned out, yet she still kept her around. Yet I found it funny that in the end, Darcy was the one to come clean to Rachel not the other way around.

Then there's the issue of Dex and Darcy's relationship. If Dex was really so in love with Rachel all along and Darcy was such a bad person, why on earth did he stay in a relationship with Darcy for SEVEN years? Dex doesn't seem like the pushover type. I could understand if they had only been together for maybe a year or two, but seven years typically means there had to be much more to their relationship than was given credit in the book. I know that the reader is not supposed to see them as a legitimate and functioning couple because that might undermine the Rachel/Dex romance, but it would've been more satisfying to see what exactly made them stay together for 7 years (with neither of them cheating until two months before their wedding).

And in the end, Giffin really used a shortcut by having Darcy cheat too (even if it was long after Rachel and Dex already started a relationship). I know that's how it always works in chick flicks, books, TV, etc. If the "good" guys are being unfaithful, it always has to be justified by the "wronged" one cheating as well (a la Grey's Anatomy). It was just too neat. It would've been more interesting had Darcy been an overall decent person instead of "she had it coming" character.

Overall, it was an enjoyable summer read. Nothing too serious but a lot of fun. Definitely reminded me of Sex & the City a bit with Rachel as kind of a Carrie Bradshaw. And Hillary reminded me of Miranda.

What saves Giffin's novel from chick lit obscurity is its in-depth characterization of two women in love with the same man. One would not expect to root for an adulteress, but the characters are written in such a way that it is impossible not to. In this novel, it is the little things that make a big difference. Giffin builds up enough back story that reads like your own life, while slowly building a crescendo of reality so near to our own lives, that it feels like you have written the book yourself. It prepares you for a devastating ending, one that would match the real-life narration of the story. Unfortunately, this is where the book takes a down turn. The last thirty pages read like something from a cheap dollar-store romance, full of predictability and plot wrapping that is clean cut and perfect. You feel as if the protagonist and her lover (who himself is created into an unrealistic, living Adonis) are given a Get Out of Jail free card. It is quite disappointing to be so fond of a female character, when, in fact, she turns out to be another manufactured piece of pulp from the chick lit industry in the end.

I am like many other readers I don't generally like chick lit but I couldn't help myself. I was so enthralled in something borrowed that I finished it in less than 72 hours....There was just something about the main character Rachel that you just need to know more about her. I then moved onto the next book Something blue (also great book!) beware that it is written in the voice of Darcy the other main character...which becomes confusing at times while switching perspective on the situation. Without giving to much away after two weeks of endless wants to read rather than anything else,I finished the series. I finished wanting to know more about the characters but the author does a lovely job of making the characters feel like reals friends and almost sadness that you wont get to know more about their lives, while at the same time not leaving the end hanging understanding of where things are....She is a wonderful author and I cant wait to start Baby Proof.

I read this book about a year or so ago and decided to read it again (I never reread books). I instantly fell in love with the book all over again. I was sure I'd have different feelings toward Darcy (because I also read Something Blue), but I felt the same exact way i did originally! I was emotional, angry, irritated and in love all throughout the book with rachel. READ this READ this READ this. I'd give a 10 star rating if I could!

I've read this and something blue and cannot understand what made Rachel such a hero.

All the while, Rachel thought of Darcy as a mean-hearted and selfish pig. QUESTION: WHY WOULD YOU STILL STICK WITH HER AND CALL HER YOUR BESFTRIEND? I don't get it!

Darcy is mean yes, but she genuinely loves Rachel (read something blue) and the only reason why she's acting like a brat is because Rachel let's her have her way!!

The heroine her is spineless and scheming. You would never steal your bestfriend's fiancee. If you did, then maybe she wasn't your BFF at all.

I hated this book. Dexter is dry and boring. I loved Something Blue. It talks about them growing up and moving on. Thank God for Darcy!!

I really enjoyed this book about what happens when two people find out their true feelings for eachother when it's almost too late. It explores friendships, what they mean, the competitions within them, the dynamics of them and, of course, love.

I actually read this book after Something Blue which is the sequal to this book. I read it more or less to get the back story as I absolutely adored Something Blue. I am glad I read it.

Definetly worth reading and I would reccomend it. One of the better chick lit type of books that I've read. Not to mushy and you really get lots of back history on the characters, which make them more realistic and easy to understand or relate to. I really like Emily Giffin's writting style and can't wait to see more from her.

Be sure to read Something Borrowed (this one) before Something Blue. I would put Something Blue in one of my top 20 list of books.

(Hide Review...)  Rooting for Rachel and Dex

I really did not want to like this story as it relates to a girl (Rachel) who sleeps with the fiance (Dex) of her best friend (Darcy) after getting stupid drunk on her 30th birthday party. Rachel sobers up and instead of feeling guilty about doing something so sleazy and making sure it doesn't happen again, she does the unthinkable of falling in love with Dex. However once you start to learn more about Rachel and Darcy and their childhood together, you can't help but want Rachel to end up with Dex because of how spoiled, egotistical, dishonest and selfish Darcy really is.

I enjoyed this book but disliked Darcy so much that I didn't want to read the sequel, SOMETHING BLUE. The only reason I am reading the sequel is to find out if Darcy ends up with Ethan. Ethan is a childhood friend of Rachel and Darcy. In SOMETHING BORROWED, Ethan confesses to Rachel how Darcy tries to make a pass at him and how he rejects her. So I really want to see if Ethan changes his minds about Darcy or better yet, maybe Darcy will get a personality transplant which will turn her into a nice girl for a change. We'll see.....

(Hide Review...)  It was an entertaining read

This book was very entertaining. The author did a good job at maintaining a level of suspense that kept me turning the page. I agree with others that Rachel was definitely a "whiny" character, but I think it gave the reader an inside look at people with great lives who, nevertheless, walk around feeling sorry for themselves, being quietly insecure, blaming others for their unhappiness, and never asserting what they truly want from life. There ARE people like that, so I appreciated the author giving us a glimpse into their thought process.

However, clearly, there was more to Rachel given her actions (versus her low self-esteem internal dialogue) and I wish the writer would've presented her multi-dimensionality more evenly ... I think she would've been a more liked character for it. She was just so darn passive. In any case, the same is true (or even more true) for the other characters. I never understood why Rachel remained Darcy's friend or even why she liked her at all (we all get stuck with friends like that in our youth, but we shake 'em off well before our 30's). Dex came across as a boring wimp and his lack of guilt hinted at a weak moral character. I don't think they had to be "bad" people to fall in love and have an affair, but I think his complete lack of guilt on the matter shed him in a very negative light. Anyway, ultimately, are just points of discussion for a book club, but certainly don't take away from the enjoyment of the book - it was very entertaining.

The part that does take the book a notch down in quality is the ending. Without giving it away, the ending was a TOTAL cop-out. The author could've really taken the whole book to a higher level by not side-stepping the issue and turning Darcy into the bad guy. Whether Dex and Rachel ended up together or not, there was a very good opportunity to really delve into the complexity of friendship, betrayal, true love, assertiveness, happiness, etc. The author just went the cheap soap opera route.

Having said all that, Emily Giffin is a very good writer and her novel was, bottom line, very entertaining. I would read it again and will read her others. I can only imagine that she will continue to develop her craft and work out the minor kinks in future novels. The fact that her characters have elicited such strong emotions from so many reviewers is testament that she did something RIGHT!

when i began to read this book, i thought "ah.. it's just for a fun reading, like any other chick lits", but it was not! this book is an extra ordinary chick lit.. the plots are well-written, the characters are so well-described that you'll either love or hate any one of them.

the story tells about two best friends rachel and darcy. rachel was the smart ones, and darcy the gorgeous ones. darcy was engaged to dex the handsome man whom was rachel's best friend from college.

what happened next when your childhood best friend dated to the man you secretly loved, and they were going to be married very soon? was it right or wrong to get the love of your life but you got to take him from your best friend's? bet you could not put this book down..

I read something blue first and then something borrowed. When I read Rachels character I could not believe how selfish and whiny she was. Of course Darcy outshone her. Dary is confident, a go getter, and someone who takes charge. I was so upset that this Rachel was being portrayed as some kind of heroine in this book. How can we condone something such as sleeping with your best friend's fiance? If you read something blue you will see that even despite the fact that Rachel resented Darcy, Darcy was a true friend to her. I think this was so sad that Rachel got her happy ending. I was hoping she'd get run over a bus or something.

When good-girl Rachel finally has the chance to one-up self-righteous, spoiled Darcy, she does just that. The two have been friends since childhood and now Darcy is marrying the 'perfect' guy, Dexter. Rachel is serving as maid of honor, but when a drunken night and a shared cab ride occur, the something borrowed isn't of the traditional variety ... This is a fantastic debut novel by Miss Giffin - I can't wait to read the rest of her works.

Everyone else has described the plot, so no need. This book was fantastic. I actually started with Giffin's Baby Proof, couldnt put it down, and then moved onto Something Blue and this. Her books are so well written and they get you in deep so that you dont want to stop reading. The only bad thing was that I read Something Blue before this, not realizing that this one came first. Honestly though it didnt ruin it, it only made me want to keep reading more, because even though I basically knew what was going to happen, seeing the story from the two different viewpoints was great! It makes you realize how differently two friends can view the same exact thing. You want to keep cheering Rachel on even though you know what shes doing is terribly wrong - but I LOVED IT!

Best friend backstabs best friend by sleeping with her fiancé. Sides are drawn and of course, the "stealer" is the bad girl, right? Not necessarily...The characters in this book surprise you by not meeting the typical expectations. You're introduced to Rachel White, a NYC midtown attorney that has always followed the rules and has earned a "safe" and good life for herself, albeit a little boring. She has managed to keep her childhood friendships alive, including her "best friend" Darcy Rhone, a pretentious and pretty PR representative. Throughout all the years of their friendship, Rachel has fooled herself into thinking that Darcy is the "lucky" one - better looking, better job, better personality and that she deserves and usually gets everything she wants.

As the book progresses, you see Rachel slowly coming to realize that Darcy has been manipulating and subliminally putting her down for years and that, just like Darcy wanted, she thinks of herself as "second best". Enter Dexter Thaler, a handsome and successful financial analyst, who happens to be Rachel's former classmate from law school. Even though she's attracted to him in the beginning, she introduces him to Darcy because she feels he's "out of her league". Sure enough, Darcy and Dex hit it off and become engaged. Rachel's fine with this and accepts her place as "maid of honor". Then one night, things change forever when she connects with Dex as never before, both emotionally and physically - behind Darcy's back and Rachel goes from "best friend" to "back stabber".

As the story unfolds, you learn more about the connection that has always existed between Rachel and Dex and how much they have in common. But Dex is a "stand-up" guy and would never leave his fiancée for her best friend, right? And Rachel knows this and besides, she would never want to hurt Darcy either, right? It's fun to read along and find out! Emily Giffin is great at telling this tale from Rachel's perspective as she gradually learns about herself and realizes what she wants. She just has to decide if she deserves it and can handle the pressure in order to get it. The reader learns along with Rachel what her friendship with Darcy may have been costing her and what she is and is not willing to give up, just to give Darcy what she wants. Sometimes a girl has to think about herself, right Rachel? It's enlightening to travel along the road of self-discovery as Rachel develops and learns from her actions. Another nice thing about the way that Emily Giffin writes this book is that you see the pitfalls that Rachel puts herself through while she makes the decisions that will affect her whole life.

The other characters in this book compliment the main players nicely. At one point, Rachel is paired with Marcus, a friend of Dexter's - a groomsman in the wedding, no less; wouldn't it just be easier for them to fall in love? As the wedding date approaches, we're caught up in the details of just what's happening to them, inside and out. This book is fun to read and hard to put down. You just might find yourself thinking about the characters and wondering what you would do in their place. As the story winds down, loyalties are tested and lines are crossed. Will Darcy find out about the infidelity? What happens with Marcus - will he win Rachel's heart in the end? We find out and are surprised and mesmerized until the very end.

The nice thing about this novel is that there is a "Part-Two". "Something Blue" tells the story from Darcy's perspective and I'm half way through it just so you know, and enjoying myself immensely - Look for my next review coming soon!

One thing I want understood before I begin is that I was actually entertained by this book. That being said, the first thing I said to myself when I was finished was, "It seems like the only thing that people in NYC do for fun is bar-hop and get drunk." Honestly, go back and read it with this in mind--whenever Rachel was with one or all of her pals, they were getting drinks. And then when they were done and were asking each other what next? the answer was... let's go to another bar! Hooray! Bewildered, I wondered, "Can't they think of ANYTHING else to do? Go back and watch a movie somewhere? Play a game? Go fishing? Go golfing (well, they mentioned this but it was never actually demonstrated)?" And along the same lines, the fact that Rachel and Dex slept together for the first time while drunk really negates, in my mind, their relationship. Not altogether, mind you, but I don't know... just knowing that if they hadn't been ridiculously drunk and alone, nothing would have happened... it doesn't make much of a relationship. I understand that it's supposed to be a flawed situation with two flawed people. But come on. At least give them some kind of credability besides their love for each other.
There was a believability issue for me, too--I had a hard time grasping that Dex and Darcy had been together for seven years... and that during that seven freaking years, Darcy never cheated and Dex never reconsidered his feelings for Rachel. I mean, I know that the pressure of a wedding makes you do some weird things, but honestly... It just doesn't seem quite plausible to me.
So, though the plot was flawed and there are definitely some issues throughout, it was overall an entertaining, quick read. But I am glad I bought it at a used bookstore or I would feel very ripped off.

This was the first book I had read by Emily Giffin. She is an amazingly gifted writer. I was totally absorbed into this book from the moment I started it 'til the moment it was finished. It was "big girl" chick lit, gutsy, intimate and enthralling. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. I think there are many aspects of the story that everyone can relate to and that is what makes it special. You start to root for Rachel and her relationship with Dex. I could not stop reading this book. I just finished it an hour ago and can't wait to go buy "Something Blue" tomorrow.

This was the second book that I read by Emily Giffin, and although I did not enjoy it as much as Baby Proof (which I LOVED--the smart heroine, the funny story, everything) I thought this was an enjoyable read.

Something Borrowed has a fairly predictable chick lit storyline--the heroine Rachel, finally finds the guy of her dreams, but there are complications--mainly that he is getting married to her spoiled, self centered best friend, Darcy. Rachel is a very likable character, since most of us have been in the shadow of a real primadona like Darcy at some point in our lives, so you really feel for her when she discovers that Dex, who she had always thought was way out her league has a thing for her. An affair and heartbreak ensues.

This book is a fun read and it will suck you in. I would recommend this to anyone looking for light summer reading--the summertime setting and romance will make for fun beach reading.

Rachel White and Darcy Rhone have been best friends since grade school. They have shared almost everything there is to share. Even though there has always been an undercurrent of competition, all of which Darcy, supermodel gorgeous and with exuberant confidence, wins almost without effort, Rachel loves her. Now Darcy has a glamorous PR job, is as gorgeous as ever and is engaged to the perfect man. Dexter and Darcy. Heck, even their names sound perfect together! Rachel, on the other hand, is single, hates her job at a law firm, and is about to turn thirty. (Darcy is a few months younger, so she gets to be twenty-nine for a while longer. Luck her... again!) During her thirtieth birthday party, put together by Darcy, Rachel gets drunk and does the unthinkable: she sleeps with Dex. A pandemonium of confusion emerges after the abrupt one night stand. For the most part, Rachel tries to downplay the events as a drunken mistake, but she admits to herself that she feels no guilt. Why should she? Hasn't Darcy been beating her in every way since they were kids? She'd even gone out with a boy she knew Rachel had a crush on when they were in the fifth grade! When Dex begins to flirt, making it clear that he wants their dalliance to continue, Rachel faces some difficult choices. She loves Dex, but she also loves her best friend. Will she and Darcy continue to be BFF after everything blows over? Whatever happens, the decision won't be easy.

I expected to dislike the heroine for her actions. Surely, sleeping with her best friend's fiancé is wrong. However, it surprised me that I rooted for her and Dex. There was never any doubt in my mind about this as I read on. I sympathized with the heroine, couldn't care less for Darcy. Every woman has had a Darcy at some point in her life -- someone beautiful, who always seems to get away with everything. Someone self-absorbed and petty. Someone who takes pleasure in beating her best friend to the punch. Which begs the question, is she that good of a friend? No? Yeah, didn't think so. But she's far from the only irritating factor here. Rachel's spinelessness is jarring -- the way she wouldn't tell Dex to either poop or get off the pot. Dex's confusion, though understandable, is annoying at times. You'd wish you knew where he stands not just in his feelings but also in who he really wants. Is he taking the heroine for a ride? I wondered more than once if he was just having a last fling and had lied about his supposed love for Rachel.

Anyway, I don't want to give anything important away. Suffice it to say that I couldn't put this book down. I wanted to know how it would all turn out. Even though the story is slightly predictable, the way things transpire is still refreshing and entertaining. Something Borrowed is an awesome read. Chick-lit these days is such a tiresome genre. You feel as though you've read the same novel over and over again. It's almost as though there were prerequisites for the storylines. Unfulfilling job? Check! Single? Check! Late twenties or early thirties? Check! Quirky mother/family? Check! Sex and the City-like scenes where friends get together for cocktails? Check! And so on. Few authors manage to improvise and write something refreshing and unique. Emily Giffin is one of those authors. She makes an unsympathetic situation seem completely sympathetic. This book has a darker edge than most chick-lits, with flawed characters and situations, which makes it all the more entertaining for me. I have picked up Something Blue, the sequel with Darcy's point of view. Darcy is flawed, a very unlikable character, an antiheroine for sure, so her novel should be interesting. Giffin is on my list of authors to look to in the future. Great summer read!

I thought it was a wonderful book! I admit, it did have a little too much fluff in the middle - that's why I only gave it 4 stars. I found myself skimming through some of it because I just wanted to get to the good stuff (but that may be more my impatience than the book). Definitely have Something Blue on standby. I think I liked that book even more. At the end of Borrowed I found myself thinking that Darcy deserved what she had gotten (let's remember, Dex was not the only one cheating); but in Something Blue we see how she totally evolves and how it all works out (thanks to someone finally making her see the real truth about herself).

Yes, this would fall into the chick lit category, but since I'm a girl, I feel ok with this. I LOVED it! I have had a copy for some time now, and never got around to reading it. Well, I cracked it open Saturday afternoon and finished it by Monday morning. I'm just sorry I waited so long to read it! It was very well-written and the characters were not only well developed but also reminiscent of people we all know. It was a real page turner and I loved every minute of it. I'm now going to read the follow-up book "Something Blue". Read it! It's a great read, even if you don't learn anything :)

I have to say that generally I'm very special of new chick lit authors (unless specifically recommended) because books in this genera can go one of two ways. One: they're good sensitive books generally about the personal growth of some woman and usually involving a romantic relationship or a divorce or kids or something. Hopefully it's funny and or touching enough to read. Type two: sappy, drippy words which are literally meting of the pages and pooling in your lap causing terrible diseases of some sort.

Luckily this book falls under type one.

Rachel is basically dominated by her best friend Darcy. They've know each other since they were six and that whole time Darcy has competed and out maneuvered Rachel into thinking she's generally worth a great deal less than her beautiful friend with the stunning fiancé, Dex.

Until she sleeps with Dex on her thirtieth birthday. And it turns out, as the days count down to the wedding, that Rachel, little mousy, all work no play Rachel, may just be the one to come out on top for once.

It's funny, cute and actually pretty touching about friendship even if Darcy is awful 99% of the time. And it's absorbing enough to read in a few hours and have you running for the sequel making it more than acceptable chick lit.

Four stars. Your friends might even borrow it.

I truly enjoyed this book; I have been hooked on the Janet Evanovich books and have been looking for something that compared to them. I think I have found the ones. I bought this book in the Denver airport knowing that I would be there for awhile and started reading the book at the airport, I read the book all through my flight and as soon I got home finished it and wanted to read more. The characters reminded me a lot of my self during my single life. It is a story based on a woman that allows her friend to pretty much run her life; because of the fact that Rachel has no confidence in herself she allows it to happen. She soon finds out that she is actually in love with her best friends fiancé and goes through the turmoil of what to do with her new found love for Dexter and if he will call of his marriage to Darcy to be with her.
This book keeps you wondering clear till the end.

I love it when an author can make somebody do something that we find horrible and unforgivable and make you love them anyways. Which is exactly what she does in this book, Its seriously one of the best book I've ever read. It wasn't like every chick lit book out there, this was intelligent, original, and it took me on the emotional ride with the main character. I love it please read it, its not something you'll soon forget. Then read something Blue also amazing!

Although you would expect a book where a woman sleeps with her best friend's fiance to possibly horrify you (after all, how awful!), this book is very well written with a lot of empathy towards all the characters. Yes, Darcy is a stereotypical, immature party girl with nothing better to do than more or less use her friends (and fiance, for that matter). And yes, Rachel definitely starts out as more or less a pushover who doesn't do much for herself. But that doesn't necessarily make them unlikeable - the way this book is written made me want to watch them develop and grow.

Darcy is a bit hard to deal with at times, due to her immaturity and and general selfishness. Of course, with Rachel you do occasionally wonder how she can't feel more guilty, but then, I've also never been in Rachel's shoes. For the most part, Rachel is a very sensible (other than this one leap in her life), down-to-earth person. This book really takes you through a lot of her struggles both with life in general, her best friend (Darcy), and her relationships. It does it in an entertaining way and is very hard to put down.

This book is a must-read to see just how well everything in it is handled. And then the second one, "Something Blue" is also a must read, as it allows you to see a continuation of everything from Darcy's standpoint, and gives you greater insight into her, ultimately allowing you to see her grow and change like we get to watch Rachel do in this book. I would definitely recommend reading both of these books, they're very enjoyable, and really make you think about friendships, relationships, and the way life goes.

I loved every minute of this book! Definately one of those that you cant put down. Sometimes the author portrays both of the lead women as kind of annoying, but it works.

I had to go out and Buy Something Blue, which I loved a little bit less, but couldn't put down just the same. The second book takes off right after the first.
I am going out today to Buy Baby Proof. I love Giffin's writing style, And hope this next book will not dissapoint.
