A true life story that kept me up late turning page after page. This British sniper tells the story of war in a humorous way. The book lets you get into the skull of a sniper in the way few books do.

This book puts you in the thick of action, you can hear the bullets whizzing past and feel the tension and smell of death, part and parcel of combat in Afghanistan. The perspective of a sniper team leader gives insight into the life and thoughts of a squad of soldiers trying hard to achieve a peaceful local village lifestyle. But religious extremism gets in the way of common sense and life is cheap and expendable according to the local religious fanatics.

The author tells the story in a candid manner and puts you in the picture with his gritty, non-diplomatic but honest account of what really happened.

I enjoyed it very much

Dan Mills has put together a very entertaining read. There are an awful lot of these types of formula type books out there though and this can make them some what ho hum. Not taking away from the work these guys have done. The story is interesting enough. Having read a number of these though they are all 6 - 12 month accounts with a personal biography to start, the meat of the story, and an aftermath type ending. These formula books, interestingly enough, seem to have begun from Vietnam era stories (albeit most are relatively recent in publication). There are, however, gems that do pop up from time to time that are really different (We were Soldiers once and Young ...) so I'll keep reading.

Buy it if you haven't read too many of these accounts - but if you have be prepared for 'the formula' but enjoy his story anyway.

Great book on what was to me an unknown story of the UK's actions in Southern Iraq. It was indeed a "close run thing". Makes you appreciate what these chaps do for us across the globe. Well written and hard to put down.

If you are expecting a book like Charles Henderson's MARINE SNIPER, as told by Carlos Hathcock, you will be very dissapointed,as I was. SNIPER ONE had one fire fight and one one-shot kill in the first 100 pages. If you are wanting a book about the every day life of a Brit sniper told with a lot of macho terms you will enjoy this one.

Absolut a book for a reader that looks for the real thing! Or something close to it...anyway. Have you been "in", you will understand the "rush" and the way of thinking.

This book is a vivid account of the occupation of Iraq during a critical period in which the 'battle for Iraqi hearts and minds' was being lost. Such bottom-up accounts from people who actually served in the field are valuable because they strongly contradict the pro-war propaganda that was (and is) spoon-fed to the mostly passive and uncritical populace back home. Note that there is nothing explicitly or implicitly anti-war in this book. On the contrary, the author and his mates were gung-ho for violence and killing. The book is yet another indication that a good soldier is not a good philosopher, statesman, or scientist. Highly recommended!

It has been since David Bellavia's House to House that I have not been able to put down a book. This also opened my eyes to the contribution of the English forces. We rarely hear about the British forces and the hell they were under. EXCELLENT BOOK, highly recommend this to anyone who likes first person war stories. Thank you Mr. Mills for three non stop days of reading!!! Loved it.

This is a fantastic book! I've read hundreds of war stories and this ranks near the top of the list, rivaling "Lone Survivor" as one of the best in recent memory. Not only is this a nail-biting true story; but it's an extremely well written one. Even the tid bits about their lives between battles is fun to read, especially the enlisted mans humor combined with British slang that's absolutely hilarious. Finally, I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the heroics of our British allies in Iraq. There's only one thing our media likes to avoid more than the heroics of our soldiers, and that's the heroics of our allies who undermine the theme that the world is lined up against us. My compliments and thanks to the author for his great book and for his service in our common cause. Sniper One: On Scope and Under Siege with a Sniper Team in Iraq

A compelling read for those who like action, only this time it's for real. Vivid portraits of subordinates and superiors, no detail left behind, nice or bad... book takes you right into the action and doesn't let go till the end. For those who have read Bravo two zero, yeah, it's that good.

(Hide Review...)  Excellent read-but-HOWEVER:
Reviewer Permalink
Excellent, well written account of the life of a front line sniper's life as lived under daily threat. HOWEVER- In my hmmble opinion this book raises the issue of just what in the H is being acomplished by our presence in this totally screwed up society. What is it that is accomplished by daily "patrols" into the neighberhoods? Sounds like it is to supply the whackos with an ambush target, so the good guys can have a go at it. At the end of the day what is it that is accomplished by zeroing in on one of these idiots from several hundred yards and killing him? Yes he is now dead, and therefore "he"cannot shoot back at you. If they get one of ours in the process then the reverse is true. Excuse me but I have a problem determining what it is in the long run that has been accomplished in this proces. Why patrol in the first place? What is the purpose of going out on patrol other than to draw out the enemy for a shoot out? Only crazy thinking leads to any justification for this war.

This is one of the best books written about the Combat since "Don't cry for me Sergeant Major". The tension and excitement is palpable as 1 Batt PWRR fights for their lives. If you have even the slightest interest in the Military you will love this book. Sgt Mills gives a great "Warts and all view" of warfare.

(Hide Review...)  Amazing book filled with non-stop action!

I have read almost every book that deals with the ongoing War on Terror and it is rare to find one that comes close to keeping pace with this fantastic story.

The story was written by a British sniper who was based in Southern Iraq (as were/are most British soldiers.)

The action is constant and delivered in a easy to comprehend fashion. The author and his "mates" dry humor fill the few lulls in the action but, again, this book is simply filled to the brim with fighting between our British allies and our Iraqi Shi'ite nemesis al-Sadar.

Not much more needs to be said about this book - if you are looking for a great war read, an easy read, and a read that will simultaneously entertain then this is certainly the book for you. Also, getting an allies perspective on the War on Terror/War in Iraq is interesting as well.

Final note: The author of the book Barefoot Soldiers, Johnathan Beharry, is described in all of his glory and is a great addition to his war autobiography as well.

Highly recommended!!!

I really enjoyed this book from the perspective of one of our British Allies participating in the Global War on Terror. This book is non-stop action and what I like about it is that the author is not a SF trooper but is in a regular straight leg British unit.
I pity the fool who gets in SGT Dan Mills crosshairs.Recommended for all military history enthusiasts.

This book is a great read. It is very well written. The writing is so clear and crisp the pages almost turn themselves. The book is also jam packed with action. This is one of those books where you feel like you get to know the people. I wanted the book to keep going after I read the last page. I was glad the author included an epilogue which followed up on he and his commrades. I hope Dan Mills continues to write. He is a born writer.

I haven't blown through a book more quickly in years. It's non-stop action from start to finish and gives a fascinating look into life on the front lines in Iraq. Definitely gives a new appreciation for what those soldiers have to endure for our freedom. Highly recommended!

It never ceases to amaze me the respect that Americans have for we British.
Dan Mills account of his platoon actions in Iraq,2004, is a perfect example of why this is so.

Most of the Iraq war stories have been dominated by American soldiers or Marines and it's refreshing to read Allied war stories for a change.
