I found the book to be horrendously condesending and 'high and mighty'. Although I believe in most of the things that the authors are writing about when it comes to living a vegan lifestyle, it was such a disappointment!

As other people said, this book is good at teaching you how to have a healthy vegetarian/vegan pregnancy. so this is really how they should write the book: if you are already a vegan/vegetarian, you are in good shape and what else you need to do. If not, otherwise, how to be healthy and skinny during pregnancy..
Instead, the authors just constantly convince you (almost rudely) to convert yourself into a vegan - not even a vegetarian, which means that not eating meat isn't enough. Dairy products and eggs are all bad bad bad.. wtf? (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-27 08:08:08 EST)

This book is not what it purports to be. They even tell you in the book the whole title and gimmick is a marketing ploy to get you to buy the book. I was looking for a smart guide to eating better in my second pregnancy. Instead this book is about why you should be a vegan, whether you are pregnant or not. I will say some of the info was useful (like how simple carbs are bad) but I don't buy that simply because I am not a vegan I am eating bad for me and my baby and my baby will be deformed and have all kinds of problems. I really do feel resentful that I bought this thinking I would get dieting tips (for the average mom)and exercise tips for pregnant women. If you are not interested in being a vegan, don't buy it, there are better books out there.

Pregnancy is not the time to try such drastic diets. This book would be less dangerous if it was about how to cook up meth to pay your medical bills while pregnant.
If you want to talk about fact and research it should be easy to find that this book not only seems like an endorsement for PETA but seems to actually be yet another secretly backed PETA off shoot just like the ones that like to post the addresses of scientists doing important research into real medicine. If anyone can take a diet book that pushes colonics as being an important part of being healthy, need to really start doing some research. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-19 07:44:18 EST)

This book is awesome, I recommend reading it prior to becoming pregnant if possible, which is what I've done. It's raw, complete data that every potential parent NEEDS to know! In addition to covering all topics related to nutrition during pregnancy, it's written by sassy modern women with great senses of humor ; ) I enjoyed this book so much I bought it for my sister, who is also planning to conceive soon.

Hi,
I'm a vegan mother expecting my third baby. I teach 7 yoga classes a week and get around for everything on my bike (we live in Scandinavia), my vegan hubby ran his first marathon this summer and my two kids are just beaming and glowing with energy. I can only recommend a well balanced vegan diet for any pregnant mom. Good luck! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-11-06 01:31:57 EST)

I am not at all squeamish about cussing or euphemisms for the vagina. I love strong women who are empowered and informed and strive to be one myself. And it is in that vein that I question everything I read. Furthermore, I love to laugh. That being said...
I purchased this book forgetting that the reason I hadn't bought the other Skinny Bitch books was because I had read somewhere that they espouse a vegan diet. Blame the pregnancy hormones for forgetting something that important. I was a vegetarian for fifteen years and perhaps I just really suck at nutrition but it was not the best choice for me personally. Similarly, this book is not the best choice for many people. Being a vegan is not a lifestyle anyone should adopt because someone writes and sells a book that uses scare tactics - and that is precisely the manner in which this book is written. To an extent, what is most troublesome about this book is not the content but the tone. There is a certain moral superiority akin to zealotry in the writing that is disconcerting. What I find further disturbing is that, essentially, the authors prey on women at a time when they may be hyper sensitive regarding the choices they are making and may be stepping outside of their comfort zones to seek information and support. Adopting a vegan lifestyle is one option however it is not the only option nor is it the best option for everyone. If you are already a vegan, you probably will not be reading anything you don't already know about if you purchase this book. If you are considering transitioning into vegan diet while pregnant, speak with your doctor. It is a serious decision and not one that should be guided by a book that's not upfront with its agenda. It makes you wonder, what else are the authors not being upfront about? As a reader and lover of books, the constant use of counterclaim (we're just telling you that the entire dairy industry is corrupt so you won't have a four headed baby, etc) is extremely tedious and actually undermines their argument. It begs the question, why did the authors feel they needed to constantly discount common sense in order to keep me reading? This is my first pregnancy and so after realizing I had wasted an hour and fifteen bucks (I really should have known to stop at the "Bitchclaimer") I could have spent on something I would have enjoyed reading, my wonderful husband ran out and got me good old What to Expect.... In terms of nutritional content, it far superior in terms of the voice it is written in, the scope of the information, the accessibility of the information and it is not at all the pedestrian read I thought it would be. Lastly, I did pick up the book again thinking it might have some nifty vegan recipes for mud masks or stretch mark prevention or some other concern. Well, even if it did, I couldn't find any. There is no index and the chapters are obscurely titled. So in addition to all my other gripes, this book is not user friendly and frankly I've got enough on my plate (pardon the pun) with the vomiting, headaches, ginormous breasts and first time mommy worries, to be reading about cows pooping when all I want to know is if I'm allowed to eat papaya. PS: Oh, and if the authors read this and decide to get up in arms - let me throw a little of your ubiquitous scattershot counterclaiming back at you - the word vegan does appear. It is buried on the second page of the forward. It might appear elsewhere but I would require and index to find it and I guess and this book is just not meaty (again, pardon the pun) to warrant one. This being my first pregnancy, I have read almost every book out there on having a healthy, safe pregnancy (especially one with twins). I guess ALL those other books are idiots because according to these two vegans, you shouldn't eat meat, fish, eggs, milk...essentially every single thing the other books and medical doctors insist are VITAL to a healthy pregnancy.
They berate and belittle the very organizations that make our food safe i.e. EPA, USDA, FDA, making them sound like a bunch of middle schoolers. This book dedicates an entire chapter on slaughter houses. Methods for killing animals, testimonials from slaughterhouse employees. While I agree it is disgusting, if true, this book is not the place to educate us on the practices of killing animals. Basically, I feel this book was just a soapbox for these 2 women to try and get all women, pregnant or not, to give up all foods that are healthy and necessary for the vegan lifestyle. not gonna happen here. This is a great book for information on being a healthy prego. If you have read Skinny Bitch some of the chapters can be skipped since they are repeated and I honestly didn't want to read about animal abuse again. I do wish this book would focus exclusively on pregnancy when it seems alot was just rewritten for a new book. I also wish they had talked about possible interference of hormones with soy products during pregnancy. I recommend this book though along with Bitch in the Kitch.

Don't let the cute cover and catchy title of this book deceive you. I was given this book as a gift recently and am currently pregnant. In NO WAY is this book helpful to any pregnant woman who is not looking to convert to veganism. This book isn't even targeted at vegans because throughout it you are instructed to stop eating animal products and the brainwashing mantra "you and your baby are what you eat" is repeated after every anti-meat message. There are so many half-truths and exaggerations in this book it's diffucult to pick out any useful information. The authors' attempt to frighten pregnant women into thinking they are destroying their unborn babies by drinking a glass of cows milk or by having a plate of scrambled eggs is completely ludicrous. PETA must have given the authors some kickbacks for getting this published with all of the graphic depictions of "animal cruelty" in this book that is supposed to be about pregnancy. These Skinny Bitches are Vegan Nazis and I hope non-vegan women read this warning before they waste money on this worthless propaganda.

I found this book fun to read simply because there are NO current day books out there that focus on veganism and pregnancy.
I also understand the authors "style" of writing, so their cursing and "in your face" approach didn't really bother me because I knew what to expect. A fews things you may have to be concerned with is: 1) that this book's audience is most likely middle class people who live in locations where a whole foods vegan diet is "easy". I question how feasible any whole foods diet is (vegan or omnivorous) for people who are the working poor in this country and located in areas such as the inner city, in which there have been a plethora of public health reports indicating that there are no farmer's markets, natural grocers, or health options available. 2) this book kind of assumes all pregnant women reading this book are straight and married to a man. If you are lesbian identified woman, the heterosexual oriented nature of the book may irk you. If you are a single woman looking to become pregnant or are already pregnant, it may irk you a bit. However, I commend that fact that the authors wrote this book, simply because NO ONE ELSE IS providing current books on how to achieve a healthy vegan pregnancy. Great book, well researched and funny, just like the first two. As for the bad reviews, I am kind of disturbed that anyone who didn't know something about the first two books and was not looking for the sort of information that this book provides would buy a pregnancy book called Skinny Bitch.

The authors write a book to help you have a healthy baby and the only thing people focus on is the language and "ooh, they want me to go vegan." What did you want them to write?? A book that says, "Eat unhealthy junk and make you and your baby sick." Would that make you feel better? If I were a woman, and was having a baby, I'd be saying, "Thanks for giving me advice on how to have a healthy baby and safe pregnancy." Would you give it 5 stars if they called it "Skinny Bitch: How to Stick Your Head in the Sand and Avoid Reality During Your Pregnancy" Being healthy is not a punishment for you or your child.

I don't know what the other reviewers are complaining about: this book was not dedicated to animal welfare and was not a PETA advertisement.
Yes, there was talk about slaughterhouses, but this was only one part. And the point of slaughterhouse parts is that you are consuming the fear and grief of the animal through the form of chemicals they release. Not to mention the animals living conditions are disgusting and have the potential to contaminate your food--which you are feeding to your unborn baby. The book focuses more on the quality of the food products you put in your body. The authors advocate a vegan diet not only because of the condition of farms animals but because it's good for your body. It focuses mainly on the dangers of dairy and disproving most pro-dairy advertisements, pointing to the huge economic impact of the dairy industry as the main reason why the government pushes dairy on the public. The authors also disapprove of caffeine, alcohol, and artificial and refined sugars, particularly during pregnancy and discuss these substances' affects on an unborn baby. I also found the chapter on breastfeeding particularly interesting and helpful. I had decided not to breastfeed but after reading this chapter, reviewing their research, and talking to my doctor, I have changed my mind and decided to breastfeed/use a breast pump. Overall this was an informative and interesting book. It gives a lifestyle during pregnancy that is very cautious, and thus I believe this is what really upset the over reviewers--that they didn't want to have to change their lifestyle. But what better time to be so careful with your body than when you're pregnant with your baby! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-08 07:28:29 EST)

These girls get mad props for exposing the truth behind the food we eat. Most people don't realize that the dairy & meat industry spend millions and millions on advertising and lobbyists to convince people that unhealthy food is actually healthy. These girls report the truth, backed by peer reviewed published medical studies (the real science & information that doesn't have millions to compete with meat & dairy industries). If you or anyone you know is pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant - this book is essential! If you care about your baby you can't ignore these facts. Bonus is that these authors are damn funny!

This book might be fine if I were looking for a Fast Food Nation-type read, but I agree with the previous reviewer-- this is definitely NOT for pregnant women who are at all sensitive or emotional.
I picked up a review copy at the bookstore where I work, not familiar with the Skinny Bitches and their vegan philosophy. Quite frankly, from the cover art I expected it to be a chick lit-type "sassy" pregnancy guide. I opened to a page at random and read quotes from slaughterhouse employees bragging about the cruelties they had inflicted on farm animals, and describing them in explicit and gloating detail. This book is much, much more explicit in its descriptions than Fast Food Nation. The cover art and title are completely inappropriate for what this book is, which is a merciless call to veganism (the admittedly brief section I read had nothing at all to do with pregnancy). I really feel that anyone who buys this book due to the cover or the title (and let's face it, a lot of bookstore buys are impulsive in that way) will feel disturbed and duped. Even if I were not 8 months pregnant this book would have made me feel queasy and upset. I'm not opposed to veganism or exposes of the meatpacking industry (and I keep mentioning Fast Food Nation because it gets the message across without needing to resort to such explicit, almost lascivious gore), but I have to wonder what in the world the publisher was thinking to publish this book the way they did. This is really irresponsible. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-03 07:09:43 EST)

Well, unfortunately, I was completely disappointed with this book from start to finish. I thought the authors might have some important things to say about eating healthy and staying away from processed foods, etc...---but just about the entire book was dedicated to the detailed processes of slaughterhouses, animal welfare, and why it's better to be a vegan. I give them credit however for the amount of research they did for this book--it is very informative and well-written, but a very bad read for a pregnant hormonal woman. Who wants to read about the way chickens, pigs, and cows are treated/slaughtered when all I was looking for was alternative ways to eat in order to better my health for me and my baby??? No, I'm NOT going to be a vegan after reading this book...and quite frankly I'm a little pizzed that they try to push it so hard on a pregant woman!!! But, I did pick up a few good pointers here and there. Not a complete waste of money, but buyer beware--this book is a walking PITA billboard!!! And don't read it if you're hormonal and pregnant--you'll just end up in tears.
