I read this exactly one year ago this month. And upon reading it I immediatly put down my greasy disgusting burger and fries and traded them for a wonderful new world of fruit, veggies, and tofu/soy substitutes and I have not regretted it for one minute! I feel good from the inside out. Not only do I phisically feel better about what I'm eating, I spiritually and emotionally feel great about the natural food that I'm eating. These girls let you have it but in a funny way. They unveil the horrible truths about the food industries and the beautiful truths about our bodies and nature. Stop being so dang skepitical and read it!! You'll pay more in hospital bills after your life filled with gross animal guts than the cost of this book!

I bought this book to learn about how to eat healthy foods.
It starts out pretty informative about diet sodas, and what is good to eat. . . then it launches into several chapters of SLAUGHTERHOUSE GRAPHIC HORROR STORIES. I was deeply disturbed, and cried for awhile. It pretty much ruined my day. Couldn't get the images of torture and horror out of my mind. BEWARE. . . you may not want to read this book, unless you're into torture. you should probably just go see Hostel instead! Deeply disturbed after reading. The first time I saw this book on a store shelf, I was appauled. How rude the title was. I passed it by giving it a disgusted look for weeks before, one day, just out of curiousity, I picked it up and started thumbing through it. It got my attention. I had to take it home. Firstly, the language, honestly, I did not appreciate. I do not enjoy, at all being cursed at, and at times, downright scolded in vulgar language. That was just not necesary. I really did not like that aspect of the book. I found it distasteful. But, if you can sort of get past the foul language, the book does have some good information. The chapters on meat are disturbing to say the least. I read it two weeks ago and have not been able to eat meat since. No kidding! As a matter of fact, I did not even eat any cheese, milk, or eggs for the first 3 days after reading it. I acutally had read alot of that stuff in the past (read Fast Food Nation), but like the pain of childbirth, you forget. I don't think this is going to leave me anytime soon. It's definitely worth reading. Especially if you're someone who wants to become a vegan, and just can't quite do it. This book will send you toppling into veganism in an instant! Promise! Yeah, I recommend it. It's a page turner. I read the whole thing in one sitting! Could not put another morsel of food in my mouth until I had read IT ALL!

I know this book is aimed towards women, but as a health conscious man living with three females, I thought I'd give it a chance. First, I want to say that it's important to read this book with an open mind and a critical eye.
The first thing the average reader will notice is the foul language. The ladies don't outline their writing philosophy until later in the book, but essentially they want to get the reader's attention. And, they succeed. Is it necessary? Perhaps not, but, there is enough good information in the book to justify reading it, even for those who find the language offensive. The book proceeds to examine the typical American diet (and the entire food system in general) and explain why it is making us fat and unhealthy. The girls take on sugar, artificial sweeteners, carbs, meat, dairy, protein, the FDA, the EPA, and many other topics. In doing so, they meticulously and humorously, often in gruesome detail, document problems, failings, and issues with the current system. This information, in my opinion, is the best part of the book. It demonstrates how companies, the government, and even the consumer, have failed so miserably in protecting human health and even basic animal welfare. It's astonishing how we have been so lax in ensuring the basic safety and quality one of the most basic aspects of human life: food. Although Freedman and Barnouin are not experts, the book includes over 200 endnotes and numerous sources. The book's "answer" to the documented problems is perhaps the most controversial aspect. The authors basically believe that everyone should become a vegan, which is not realistic for most people; in fact, it may not even be the most healthy option. Also, although marketed as a diet book, I don't think the main point is even weight loss. The book is primarily about health, which I believe is a good thing. However, I know obese vegetarians and vegans, so those lifestyles aren't guarantees of getting skinny. In conclusion, I recommend reading this book. Don't let the crude language or the call to veganism cloud the fact that these ladies provide important information about the food we eat in easy to understand language. As I mentioned earlier, read it with an open mind and a critical eye and you will certainly come out with a better understanding of the health and food production problems that plague the USA. I found it so odd that the authors recommend AGAINST eating processed foods if they contain meat or dairy, yet almost all of their recipes recommend highly processed soy products. They even call products "vegan bacon," "vegan sausage" and "vegan cheese." What do you have to do to soybeans to create fake bacon and fake cheese?
I didn't find their foulmouthed presentation to be a turn off as some readers did. However, I noticed a few incorrect facts or exagerations in the book which led me to believe that the rest of the book could have been based on false data or on half-truths as well. For example, the California Milk Processor Board doesn't control all dairy marketing though there is a national milk processor board involved with national dairy marketing. Also, coffee has been shown to contain healthful antioxidants and is not as bad for you as they claim. They lost credibility with me very quickly even though I agree that people should avoid artificial sweeteners, trans fats, red meat, preservatives, pesticides, etc. I had to skip the chapter on animal cruelty... I skimmed a few sentences and found it horrifying. Not for the faint of heart! It really didn't pertain to getting "skinny" either other than to try to convince readers to adopt a vegan lifestyle. Skinny Bitch was a waste of money for me. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-22 08:10:24 EST)

This book had some solid ideas regarding the chemicals that we daily put in our bodies and the amount of food we consume. With that said, the overall theme was a little overwhelming in regards to the big bad meat eaters and the fasting with consumption of only water for a day, and or more if you tolerate it. Mind you, they do recommend consulting your physician before entering such and endeavor. I do believe the non-educated consumer would fair much better to consult their physician for a weight loss program, or research a healthier text to assist their own trials. Poor advice all around .

This was a scatological diatribe against other diets, meds, and doctors.
But offered very little good science. It was so de-motivating that I threw it away before the end. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-18 09:51:15 EST)

Short, quick, easy, but NOT so sweet! This book is the PERFECT beginning to anyone considering become not only a Vegetarian, but a vegan. It's a little frightening, and hard to read some of the the gruesome details ... oh, and hopefully you don't get easily offended by bad words because these girls are ruthless! However, there's compassion at the same time. I've heard of all of these stats before, but the way this book presents it is a must read for anyone... Especially those flesh fans. TAMARA'S YOGA FUSION

I am surprised this book moved pass the editing room floor. This is the cleaned up version that actually made it to the shelves? The authors address the readers as if we are all sniveling retarded 2 year olds. I did like the factual information that posed in the book, however, the authors fail to mention the subjectivity of the data. I am surprised the authors made it out of high school let alone college with the severe uppity sorority girl attitude that is laced throughout the entire book.
I appreciate the main points on animal cruelty, eating organic, healthy diet etc; but I think that it would have more of an impact without the airheaded persona. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-18 09:51:15 EST)

I loved reading this book and look back on it time to time for certain chapters. So much interesting information and truth about how society and the government brainwashes everyone to think you NEED to eat this and that, but you don't have to. After reading this book, I definately think twice about everything I put in my mouth. I would recommend this book to anyone with a open mind that is wanting to drop pounds. This book was priced right and was worth every cent!

I have been a typical "dieter" following alot of the "fad" diets including low-carb and Atkins all my adult life. I read this book and it literally flipped a switch in my brain. I became vegan(except for greek yogurt in the mornings--still my achilles heel!), April 15, 2008. The book was easy to read and offered lots of specific product suggestions in substitutions for the milk, dairy and meats that I gave up. It has been very easy, I do not feel deprived in any way( "vegan" chocolate and ice cream taste great!), I have found great receipes (including the ones in their follow up book) and Dr Weil's e-newsletter..I do not have any "binge" desires, it has leveled out my hunger levels. I have always had high cholesterol (220+). Last August 2007 this, again, was the case. This August 2008, after 4 months of being vegan, my cholesterol dropped FIFTY that's right-- 5-0 points! My triglycerides(a measure of fat in your blood) dropped FORTY Points! If that isn't compelling I don't know what is! I made no other changes to my diet or exercise patterns. I cannot recommend this book enough!

On pg. 53, the author writes "We encourage you to think for yourself and make your own decision". This line reflects why I would not recommend this read. the women who wrote this leave no room for you to form your own decision on their radical rules to becoming a skinny b*tch
The book basically bashes anyone who eats meat, dairy, and white bread. ok, who doesnt eat those things from time to time? its unrealistic and a good deal of the suggestions aren't backed up by credible sources (who cares is Dr. Andrew Weil says drink soy milk... who the heck is he?!!?) Its a lighthearted read that appeals to the fashionista, jet setting type of person. and there are some good food recommendations for vegan types. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-09 08:10:44 EST)

When I started this book I was really just looking for a diet book, and the clever title and chic illustration caught my eye. I was not a vegan, and had NO intention of becoming vegan, when I started reading, and had carefully avoided animal rights literature for quite some time. After reading this book I made a decision to completely overhaul my life, this included going vegan, getting rid of all my nasty addictions (mostly alcohol, caffeine, cheese, and sugar), leaving a bad relationship that was going on for too long, practicing yoga, etc. I have lost 35 pounds so far (and counting), I am healther, I am happier, and I feel generally amazing. I am really glad I was able to read this book before I heard what its advice entailed, I am sure if I had realized beforehand I would have walked on past and missed something really special.

The book has some solid information, but some of the information is taken to the extreme or overgeneralized.
In general, some good considerations. I wouldn't accept the all or nothing mentality as it doesn't fit into real life business traveler needs. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-08 08:16:17 EST)

the title is a misnomer. buyers could pick up the book thinking they'll be getting a round of lifestyle and nutrition tips. instead they get two women expressing their very strong views about the state of the american food industry. and while their facts are valid, there are bits and pieces that they don't identify as the minuses to being vegan... and there are more than a few.

Everyone needs to calm down. They're writing style is not for everyone but happens to be one of my favorite things about the book. I like straight forward sassy women. I think it's great. But I also take it with a grain of salt. They do base their claims on plenty of scientific studies and research. It's all in the back of the book if you want to check it out. I now have the knowledge of what goes on in the meat, dairy, and other food industries and I will make smarter, organic, free-range, etc. decisions, or cut back on certain things. It is very informative, and I'm glad to know what these industries would rather the public not know. But I'm not giving up cheese or adopting their plan verbatim. What I really like about it is that it's not a diet. It's a lifestyle change in eating habits. As a health educator I know (and I teach others) that diets do not work, but making healthy permanent change does. I enjoyed the book tremendously, but I would never recommend it to my mother (even though she would agree with all of their claims) or some other old fashioned, easily shocked person because of their straight talk. Some people just can't handle it.

This book contains alot of good information about the products we consume on a daily basis. I seem to be the only person who thinks the tone in which it was written was just dumb. I didn't find the writers to be 'just telling it like it is'. I thought they were trying too hard. Just kind of silly and inappropriate, and I'm no prude. I know it was all for shock value, but I still found all the profanity, for a self help book, to be really odd. But the information they provided was good and I catch myself reading labels more and really paying attention to what goes into my body. I will say they had proof to back up claims and probably did a years worth or more of research. Very important information delivered in an oddball way.

I have read this book 4 times and I now have it on an audio book as well to listen to the wealth of information. I am so excited about it that I am telling everyone that I know about the book and I have been giving them away as life changing gifts. I didn't by the book to "get skinny" I bought this book because it was floating around out office and I thought that the title was catchy. Low and behold bam I am not the same. No book that I have ever read has had this kind of impact on me!

I first saw this book in stores. I wish I head read any sort of review online first. It really appealed to my fabulous side, along with my desire to be skinny. Unfortunately it really had nothing to do with dieting. It was more about two failed models trying to use "hip" filthy language to push their beliefs on the public. I'm pretty sure the back cover didn't mention that the book would leave me sobbing in bed about how people slaughter pigs. That was not what I signed up for. If I was interested in joining PETA I would send Ingrid a check. However shallowly, I was only interested in getting skinny. This book didn't help. It only made me cry.

I did a lot of research into vegetarianism years ago, when I was single, and was a vegetarian for 7 years or so....but then I got married, quickly had kids....and my husband is a confirmed meat eater. I started our marriage though buying only organic fruits and veggies, brown rice, wheat flour, and thought I had educated him about healthy eating. Since I would not cook meat, he took over a lot of the cooking though after the kids came along and I had gone back to work. My health took a nosedive- from being the healthiest I had ever been- to now, being the fattest- all so the kids (and he) could have the same comfort food he had grown up with. Mind you I am very very grateful for all his help...but....
Well, I have had enough. I know the truth that is in this book. It is excellent to give us all a thunk in the head....which most of us truly do need. I can't wait for a version for the men to come out. I would also love to see someone investigate the current American cancer treatments in an easy to read format such as this. For example, if you get cancer at 40 is chemotherapy really GOOD for you longterm if you want to be healthy until you are 80? Or is it really killing the immediate problem and your healthy organs and functions to boot? I would truly like to know if this is also an invention of the very large medical industry. The GOOD: First off, one author holds a masters in Holistic Nutrion so she IS qualified to write such a book. The information about aspartame alone blew me away. I've been drinking diet cola for years and have struggled on and off with depression and this book made me seriously consider if they are linked.
This book was funny and I like how the authors aren't scared to say what they truly think when it comes to diet, animal cruelty, and veganism. Even if you aren't ready to go vegetarian or vegan, the info about articial sweetneners, the effects of sugar, dairy, and meat, and how fruits and veggies are so good for you is helpful. I know, I know, it's all been said before. But most authors usually tell us to stop eating this crap like we are 4 years olds. These authors are saying as a grown women you should know better than to keep eating crap! Overall, there is a lot of good information in this book. And the fact of matter is, because everything we eat either is regulated by the government or should be better regulated, what we are eating IS a political issue! Part of the reason I think this book was marketed the way that it was is so people who normally wouldn't be open to this kind of information would read about it. THE BAD: But the fact that it was marketed in such a way was a complete "bait and switch." I left this book thinking of the authors as "vegan nazis." And it's hard to take such scathing hatred for the animal and meat industry seriously when they are models promoting clothing that is most likely being sewn together by foreign children in sweatshops! I find it hilarious that these self-righteous bitches are trying to tell me what I should and shouldn't do when they work(ed) for an industry that makes women feel horrible about themselves and their bodies. And the language! Don't call me names or talk down to me. The "f bomb" has NO place in a diet book. But this isn't really about losing weight anyway. It's about becoming vegan. And really should have been marketed as such. (But if it had I would have never read it.) There were a few moments when I thought I was reading a book written by anorexics. Wait until you are ravenous before eating!? Eat one peice of fruit then wait 10 minutes until you eat another!? Another part that I found absurd was the advice to never take any medication not even aspirin. Aspirin is made from a PLANT! Aspirin was originally created from the bark of willow trees, so shouldn't they be promoting organic aspirin rather than just outright telling you to never take it!? Educate yourselves! This book contains good information and holds your interest but it is so profane. I can't believe the wording - enough to make a sailor blush.
I thought the title was simply an attention grabber, but it is indicative of the book's content. If they would clean up their language I could give it 4-5 stars. Three is generous. Elsea (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-18 10:22:05 EST)

I read this book cover to cover twice. I am not a vegan or a vegetarian. I've researched a lot of nutrition information over the years due to my own or family members' health issues. This book is so in your face! I loved it! Beyond PC and any psuedo "sensibility" offenses, this book gives real good info, with a much needed kick in the b**t! I could list several more very reputable resources that corroborate the scientific info. And the menu suggestions are great! Buy the boxed set. For under $20, it's a great bargain for hard backs.

This book is full of non-facts, psudeo-science and outright lies. It's is just another fad diet book, where just like any other of these bad advice books- you can lose a few pounds then gain it all back.
It has a hidden vegan agenda- nothing wrong with being vegan mind you, but why not be honest about it? Advices goes from the "of course, heard it a thousand times" to completely wacky. Most of the recipes are about as nutritionally balanced and tasty as eating the book itself. And, to top it off there's a current and subtext of hateful anger in this book. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was funny, yet informative. What an eye opener!!! Has great tips on things to eat. As well as guides to use for shopping. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to be healthy! This is a great way and it makes you feel great and not sluggish! :)

I learned a lot about how meat is prepared and it completely grossed me out (which was the intention of the writers). I'm glad I read it but now I'm rethinking meat eating (again the intention of the writers). This is a very good book if you are seriously revising your food intake and diet. While it does emphasize losing weight it goes about it by introducing the reader to a healthier way of living/eating. It was an easy read as well.

As a physician reasonably versed in nutrition, I can honestly say this book was a complete waste of time to read and money to buy. Their theories mostly back scientific validity and their "buy all organic foods and become vegan otherwise you will get cancer" attitude is hardly motivating or practical for those of us who live in the real world. The authors have no credibility in this field and the fact that they are models (and have written the book with a bad attitude) tends to make me even more suspicious about their knowledge base.
It is quite amazing that NY Times rated this a bestseller. I will not be basing my book buying decisions on that anymore. Overall, I would stay away from this book. It is a poorly written book by bitchy ex-models who have not an ounce of true scientific training. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-14 08:21:01 EST)

After reading this book, it motivated me to lead a healthier lifestyle. I quit smoking, started a vegetarian diet and to become more active in the protection of animals.

I thought this book was great. It was funny, witty, and held my attention. It reinforced my change to become vegan. I do recommend this book as it has worked for me. I am not dieting anymore, I just changed my eating habits, for the better. So now I'm losing weight slowly with out trying.

With all the good, helpful, intelligent books out there today on living a healthy life how did this even get published? It is embarrassing to even think this is sitting on a bookshelf somewhere in the US. I would love to quote some lines out of the book but I deleted it so quick off my Kindle...yikes!

I really like this book but the problem is the copious curse words througout. Why did they do that? If the science is good, the humor is there, I don't see why the authors trashed it out like that. If toned down a notch or two I would give this 5 stars.
The information is spot on. You really can't argue with eating more fruits and vegetables! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-10 08:26:05 EST)

I'm 41 and fat, like 80 lbs overweight. I read this book, laughed the whole time and got inspired to go Vegan. These ladies, and yes they are brusque and use course language (which shouldn't surprise anyone, considering the title) but they are in it for YOUR health. As far as not being based on science??? If you are one of those people who don't believe it unless they see it on the Today show, then remain skeptical. If you think "conventional medicine" is telling you the whole story and that it's okay for our Daily Requirements of dairy to be established by the American Dairy Association, then feel free to keep your eyes closed to the detrimental effects of animal products on human body tissue. But if you're able to consider that the fellow who won a Nobel Prize for discovering the cause of cancer in the 70's actually did discover the cause of cancer, then take a chance, have a laugh and read this book. You might become inspired to change your lifestyle. I did. 10 pounds off, 70 to go! PS. I heard about the ex-spice girl reading this book from the other reviews. It's not why I got the book. In fact, I'm glad I didn't know...I probably wouldn't have bought it.

ok. So first off their advice about vices is good and delivered with humor. And the advise about sugar and carbs is right on the money but then they start talking about dairy and meat. I was on board until then. This book is basically a beginners guide to veganism with allot of bad words. ALLOT.

Yes- they are skinny... and they push their opinions down your throat like everyone reading is fat and naive and too stupid to think for themselves. I too, did not realize this was an animal rights sounding board to convince the entire world to eat tofu and buy faux fur. This is a diet book right? The rest of the info was basic general knowledge. I usually give a book away when I'm finished reading... this one went strait in the trash.

I FEEL LIKE I'VE BEEN RIPPED OFF AND MISLEAD! If you are readying this book based on the claim, "A no-nonsense, tough-love guide for savvy girls who want to stop eating crap and start looking fabulous!" and hope to learn what these authors consider "crap" you will be disappointed. This is a book written by vegetarians to push their agenda on those that eat meat. They use tactics to ensure you are completely disgusted by the meat industry. I'm not saying what they say isn't true, I'm convinced it is. But, don't pretend to offer advise to a group of people (fat people) that are looking for help and then flip the script and make the book about some political argument against meat. This makes you "skinny ... " no different than the meat industry and FDA that aren't looking out for us, neither are you.

I really enjoyed this book for it's frankness. The authors can be very abrasive, but wouldn't the title imply such? I have been an off-and-on-again vegetarian for many years, and this book has definitely sent me back in that direction. I was disgusted by the animal cruelty described, and I almost skipped the chapter altogether. But I knew that I should take the information in and let it affect my dietary decisions. I also "try" to go organic, but in my lazy and cheap nature I will just get what I can at the neighborhood Savemart instead of driving across town to our beautiful (& huge!) new Whole Foods, or getting down to the once-weekly farmers market. I am inspired to change those habits and feed myself and my family delicious, fresh and wholesome food. Finally (and most importantly!), I would like to say: this book might have been better titled "Healthy Bitch", because the authors really are not promoting superficial beauty, but rather they are encouraging you to strive for good health, fitness and energy, ergo to look and feel the best that you can!

Nothing in this book is new to me, but the way the information is relayed is so clear and concise, many times I just sat there in awe in how well the information was relayed. This book provides the best biological agruement for vegetarianism I have ever heard.
Beyond being logical, and deeply in-tuned with how "we are what we eat", this book is backed by scientific review, which the book alludes to but does not cite particular studies. For me, this is not an issue. I have studied health and nutrition for over 10 years and have always laughed at the health fads and stayed with what works for me. This books identifies that which works for me. I am buying three of them today for my Moms. Thank you for a great book that will truly stand the test of time. I loved this book because of the way it is written not in spite of it. I have read many books with similar messages, and frankly this one did not have as much 'meat' to it as some of the others, but my point is that the way they delivered the message has a chance of affecting people that wouldn't hear the message otherwise. There's plenty of books on veganism out there for those who are interested. I think this one helps get the thoughts flowing through minds of people who might not normally read that type of book.
Granted, the tone is harsh......Yes, the girl on the cover is skinny............. But the point is they are saying things in this manner to get your attention, make you laugh, and make you think about what they are saying. They come right out and say more than once that they don't care about being 'skinny', that it is more important if you are healthy. I think the people who are upset over this haven't read the book all the way through and don't have a mindset to appreciate their writing. I found myself laughing out loud when I first picked it up and was hooked. Like I said, if you are already convinced you want to be a vegetarian/vegan and want a book with lots of content and details to back your decision, you might be better off with another book. But, for the person who is trying to eat healthier and is being introduced to the idea of veganism for the first time, I think this is a great introduction and way to make people think. As for the references being unfounded--these girls are quoting the same mainstream resources that most of the other books I've read on this subject are quoting. I didn't read anything that seemed outlandish considering I've been exposed to these facts before. No, I didn't personally do the research, and it's possible that these people are wrong. I have just decided to take my chances - it's better to risk being wrong and have cleaned up my diet and become healthier than it is to make fun of this thinking and then find out later that it is in fact safer and healthier to be a vegan. I summarize to say that the negative comments are mostly based on fear. Finding out that everything you thought was ok might not be is scary. Fear that maybe you can't depend on your food supply to be safe. Fear that you might need to consider making some sacrifices in order to be healthier and to lessen the negative impact of your existence. Many, many people aren't ready to think these thoughts and they shouldn't read this book. If you want a good laugh while having someone push the boundaries of your thinking, read this book. If you can't lighten up, you won't like it. If you're like me and are already considering making changes and just need a little shove in the right direction, these girls will give it to you! I only picked one star because zero stars was not an option. This book may have some useful, accurate information. However, it's hard to find because it is buried in their political agenda. It's mission is to make everyone a vegan who only eats organic food. It even goes to the extent of saying mortgages and/or rent payments are luxuries we waste our money on and should use our money to only buy organic. It also says if you get cancer it's your fault for not thinking positive. I understand that it makes extreme statements in effort to kick one's butt into shape, but in doing so it lost all credibility. I plan on returning this book for a full refund! Please, don't waste your money!

Ok....so most people are right. When you buy this book, you have no idea that it's going to shove veganism down your throat.
But, how many diet books do people buy looking for a miracle cure? I have so many diet books. And I still walk around with the weight I gained from having my daughter 2 YEARS ago. Listen, if you want to know how to become a skinny bitch,They'll tell you! Basically, you're not going to get skinny unless you exercise and eat your fruit and vegtables. So if you don't want to do any of those things, STOP buying diet books! I am slowly becoming a vegan. They really moved me and after doing some more homework, I am ready for this change. Look at all those vegans out there. They look like a million dollars. And saving 100 animals a year and helping the environment, is worth it to me. Thank you for opening my eyes and inspiring me to become a skinny bitch!! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-31 08:51:19 EST)
