Master this challenge with professional photographer Lee Varis as he covers a range of skin: women and men, young and old, various tones, in-studio and outdoors, tattoos, and more. His step-by-step tutorials and before-and-after illustrations demonstrate various techniques for topics such as digital-specific lighting challenges and what can and cannot be done in post-process.
A free CD-ROM accompanies the book and contains sample image files to use while following the tutorials, plus equipment recommendations and technical reference materials that enhance and reinforce the instruction. Order your copy of this practical guide today and get a complete start-to-finish approach to integrating everything from posing models to shooting and retouching candid scenes. |

The book I ordered was listed as "new" on amazon.com, but when it arrived it had a crease on the front cover, similare to if the cover had been dog-eared. I kept the book because, after a string of bad experiences just like this one, I was sick of mailing things back, not being refunded the shipping cost, and essentially wasting money. Their shipping time was very quick, so that is a plus, but ultimatley, the book was not in the condition it was described as.

Skin, The Final Frontier. Skin is neither white nor black nor neutral grey. Lee Varis explain how to color correct skin. The one chapter on lighting is good enough IMHO to be the basis for another book. This book is fairly unique in its main subject and reason enough to buy it in addition to a general PhotoShop book. Fairly quick reading and well illustrated.

I did read all these great reviews and finally decided to buy this book.
To summarize - its rather disappointing. Lighting? Not so great on it. Retouching? Beauty retouching technique (yes, no plurals) is pretty much "blur + brush".. With some texture to throw in. Sharpening technique (yes. No plurals again) - well.. not a lot of use - could be better done with LAB space. Most of colour discussion is about RGB space. Excuse me, what happened to CMYK and Lab? Bits about calibration - yes, nice, but not a lot of details. Its almost like someone thought up an idea for book, wrote few chapters then got sick of it, and started to throw in random thoughts and ideas just to fill up space. I woulnt recommend this book to anyone who ever read Welcome To Oz! or any other decent book on photoshop. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-27 00:45:17 EST)

I haven't read all the chapters yet, but so far the book has surpassed my expectations. It's easy to understand but aimed at those who want a deeper understanding of photography. I bought it for the purpose of learning more about accurate skin color in digital photography, but the book has much more in content, such as a good chapter on lighting and photographing people.

I have worked in a pro photolab for 12 years. Photography and Photoshop are always a main topic in conversations at work.
This book is not an "intro book", if you want to learn photoshop or photography basics, I recommend looking somewhere else (try the digital photography book vol 1 or vol 2 {they're both excellent but different} by the author scott kelby). What this book is, however, is one of the best all around books on intermediate portraiture skills that I've read. It has a broad spectrum of topics all relating to making skin look like you want it. The book covers: physical characteristics of digital capture and lighting positioning of the lights and camera (a couple are a little over the top) monitor calibration retouching for flawless skin other miscellaneous photoshop tricks and techniques (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-12 00:14:03 EST)

I'm an experienced photographer and retoucher with Adobe Photoshop. I own many books and think can make a sincere judgment. Well, that said ...I have bought the book based on the many good reviews, but it was a real disappointment. It's outdated and very, very basic. Even the only chapter that actually covers the title of the book about correcting skin tones wasn't useful. Save the money, there are much better books and sources on the Internet. For example do a Google search on `Gry Garness'.
If you're a photographer or Photoshop user with zero experience, then this book might bring you some knowledge, but for the rest it will only be in your book closet unused. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-24 00:13:19 EST)

Behind the scenes look at the art and technique of glamour/nude photography. Includes discussion and many wonderful photos to help understand the concepts. I learned several techniques that I was not previously aware of. If you are interested in this type of photo work, I recommend the book. A good value.

I haven't really read all the chapters yet but this book is very professional in terms of the processes they use to enhance images. Everything from different kinds of lighting to the steps through photoshop to printing. With that said, this is not a beginner book. Prior photoshop experience is needed or else one will easily get lost.

Not the best for those new to Photoshop, and will be difficult for some to follow along with versions of PS older than CS. But packed with tips and tricks to allow you to get the most out of your digital images in the digital darkroom.

This book is simply amazing!! I hate reading "how to" books, especially about Photoshop because a) I don't have the patience to read all the verbose technical stuff, and b) find that many other "hone your skills with these helpful tips" publications are too patronizing to any photographer - but this book is concise, clear and actually interesting while being entertaining to read! This book will sure be one of those dog eared/can't live without it books on my shelf!

When I picked up "Skin", I was looking for a more advanced beauty retouching manual. Unfortunately, it wasn't as extensive as I had hoped.
This book is great for intermediate Photoshop users who need to hone their skills in the area of beauty retouching. Advanced users who want an in depth look at all aspects of beauty retouching should keep their eyes out for something else. I still haven't found it. I agree with the other 5 star reviews. The only thing I'd like to add is part of the foreword by Gerald Bybee:
"If you're looking for pointers on shooting nudes or tutorials on photographing sexy models in the desert, this book is not for you. There is already a plethora of those pseudo-technical books explointing the throngs of photo voyeurs. Lee isn't about exploitation of our society's fascination with naked skin. Lee's fascination is simply with digital imaging technique focused on the practical application of photographing people, who coincidentally are primarily dermal by nature." If you are like me and don't want a book full of nude models sitting around the house, then don't let this book's title keep you from buying it. There is a thumbnail of the most nude picture in the book on the cover (3rd down on the left side) and is the image of a woman's back. Lee Varis does a good job of talking about and showing examples of skin without including pictures you may not want your children seeing. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-13 23:51:10 EST)

One of the most focused books on lighting and Photoshopping people I have ever read - it's very advanced, but well explained. This book will help you push yourself when it comes to this subject. Refreshing and different approach in his writing.

I can say I am happy with the book for the price I paid ($23) It is not worth the full retail for myself (newbies will get a lot more out of it) I was hoping it would go into more detail with making correct skin tones, it is sadly only a chapter long, but is a great chapter. The retouching chapter is ok but not for high end retouching, Katrin Eismanns book on retouching (3rd edition) has a lot of great "high end" pore by pore retouching techniques, the ones in this book are good for quick portrait retouches, also a great section for tattoo's and even applying tattoos to the skin. All in all its a good book just don't expect a ton of advanced techniques.

I won't cover what has already been said by the others that have reviewed this book. Suffice it to say, it covers a lot of what a professional would do with lighting, etc. Its interesting and gives you some perspective but if you're an amateur like me, most (but not all)is well beyond what is practical.
What is does do, is give very good info on "skin" tones, shading and fixing imperfections. It should of been titled Retouching/Fixing skin and Photos with Adobe Photoshop. You must have Adobe Photoshop and a very good understanding of it. The results of his instructions were very nice. Some very detailed methods that made a BIG difference in the end results. The photos I have fixed using his methods really look good. I would definitely recommend this book. Even if you're only going to use half of it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-09-05 09:43:15 EST)

With a quick review of basics, this book quickly delves into more complex tasks that are rarely addressed in other so-called "Advanced Photoshop" manuals. During a period where I'm finding it consistently difficult to find books which can teach me things I have not already learned about PS, "Skin" provides both new information, and a different viewpoint on things already known.

Is this the complete guide to perfect (studio) lighting and skin (colour correction) retouching in Photoshop as the sub-title says? No it is not. Is this a book which gives you helpful tips with good examples for both lighting and correction and retouching on a medium Photoshop level, yes it is.
As many Photoshop book authors Lee Varis does not make clear for whom he wrote this book. It's not for the Photoshop newbie with a digital SLR who likes to get quick 'correct' skin colour with post processing (read Scott Kelby) It's not for the professional Photoshop user which aim is to get a complete picture of (digital) lighting setups in relation to post processing; the first chapter, digital imaging basics, is already a proof of that. The book however starts very promising, with a foreword by the Queen of retouching herself, Katrinn Eismann (I would strongly advice anyone to read her book about restoration and retouching if you do not know it yet.) Than Lee Varis makes a big mistake by starting about "digital imaging basics" in the first chapter, followed by the second mistake, chapter 2: "colour management workflow and calibation." 99% of people who do care about getting professional looking results with retoucning and lighting setups related to skin colour finished that "Scott Kelby level" knowledge years ago. The third chapter gets into it. Still it does not go deep, at least not as deep with many more examples as I know for sure many people like me hope for. The middle of the book gives probable for many hungry skin retouching lovers the climax with chapter 6 (Retouching) and chapter 7 as the end. There is another filled chapter; chapter 8, but that unfortuntely goes back to Kelby level, with "Preparing for print" Is the book worth it? For me it was, not that I really learnt a lot of new things. But Lee Varis gave me a lot of ideas to do things different, not only skin related of course. Also the lighting setups are well explained, which give me good info and ideas. The Photshop techniques he uses in this book can be used in many other cases. All are written in very clear English, with good examples and 'lesson files' on a CD-ROM. The downpoint is that it is not skin deep, and that material which is shared by so many (beginner) Photoshop books can be found in this book again. Next time I hope Lee Varis write a book about skin retoucing and lighting setups, which goes skin deep and that deserves the sub-title which this book has now. I'm extremely HAPPY to find/own this book/SKIN by Lee Varis
From the Content/concepts-techniques -- to Info organization/sequence of concepts-writing style -- to Steps/Images Illustrations, ALL reflect professionalism It's hard to comment/summarize/simplify a Wealth of Info/Knowledge of this book/SKIN, in just a few statements, to tell you the what/why/how I think it's good . So I briefly choose to say to you with conviction, that from all perspectives, SKIN truly is a SUPERB book to have/read/learn !! No matter you're a novice/pro in Photography/ Photoshop, you should definitely buy this book/SKIN, to learn/see from Lee's sophisticated/highly-aesthetic point of view/skills (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-08-04 09:29:23 EST)

I have about a dozen books on digital photography and Photoshop. Half of them are quite good, but this one is great. I'm not a professional photographer, rather an avid student (I read Ansel Adams' books the first time 35 years ago). After going digital nine years ago (can you say Mavica?) and finally treating myself to a proper DSLR more recently, I have plunged into the new realm of control that digital opens up.
I have been basically satisfied with my results, but it's kind of hard to screw up the Grand Canyon if the atmosphere is not hazy. After the initial rush of pretty good photos from a good DSLR, I have come to realize that I need to be able to make the people in my photos look good. If I do, the rest of the photo will come along and complement the subject. Skin, by Lee Varis, helps me accomplish this. The lighting techniques are direct and to the point and his explicit and detailed instructions on how he achieves good skin tone and overall color balance are understandable, repeatable, and give excellent results. I'm still reading and rereading the book and always come away with new tidbits that send me to my computer to try in Photoshop. The book should come with a warning: "Caution, reading may inspire you to abandon your Elements and move up to CS3. I did." Highly recommended. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-20 10:03:20 EST)

This book brings it all together. It starts with calibrating your camera and meter and then sets up Photoshop to do what you need it to do, if you shoot people.
I have had the opportunity to have one on one instruction from the author and that whet my appetite for the rest of the book. No it does not cover every eventuality, but gives a very firm foundation with lots of options so you can pick how you like your pictures to look like. If you're serious about getting the most from your DSLR, this book is for you. It offers a wealth of information not found in other photography books. One of the best things about SKIN is you can use the book in total (calibrate your entire digital workflow, etc. ) or just pick different tutorials from the various chapters (like correcting blemishes without using the "healing" brush in Photoshop. To get the most out of this book you will own a DSLR, PC or Mac & Photoshop CS. The retouching info is still quite valuable if you don't have a DSLR, but the sections on using Camera Raw will really make you want to start shooting in that colorspace if you currently shoot JPEGs. One thing I would love to have seen is bullet points or some kind of highlighting (bold type) of the tutorials in the text-- as it is written, they are set in the same type as the other text and if you're a lazy reader like me, you'll find yourself hunting for the "step-by-steps". Also, the author, Lee Varis personally (& quickly) responded to an e-mail I sent him regarding a passage in the book-- quite nice.
This book, along with Exposure and Lighting for Digital Photographers Only, are the best & most useful photo books I've purchased in a LONG time. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-11 11:18:43 EST)

Lee has written the best analysis of photographic color I've seen: how to control it, how to get it reasonably accurate (and he explains why perfect accuracy is impossible), and how to alter color to get results artistically superior to technical perfection. I'll also endorse, rather than repeat the details of Conrad Obregon's excellent review of this book, and add another vote for this opinion. Futhermore, the chapter on retouching, by itself, will teach many readers more about Photoshop than most Photoshop books will.
The surprise extra value in this book is Chapter 7, Special Effects. As the lead author of an obsolete special effects book (from the bad old days of film ), I'm surprised at how many ideas I see in this chapter that I never thought of! You will like some of the pictures, dislike others, but learn the techniques to make pictures you very much WILL like. The only weak chapter is number 3, Lighting, and it's only weak because that material needs a book, not just a chapter. (Disclosure: I'm the lead author of Light - Science and Magic. Light: Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting) But the book would still be worth more than its price if you threw out that chapter completely! Well done, Mr. Varis! Skin: The Complete Guide to Digitally Lighting, Photographing, and Retouching Faces and Bodies
I just finished reading Skin: The Complete Guide to Digitally Lighting, Photographing, and Retouching Faces and Bodies, a wonderful book for Adobe® Photoshop® enthusiasts. Although I would only consider myself an intermediate user of Photoshop, I found Lee Varis' book immensely helpful, and I highly recommend it to all those who photograph people. Chapter 1: Digital Imaging Basics is a brief introduction to digital imaging basics. It quickly covers chips and pixels as well as dynamic ranges. Furthermore, Varis covers JPEG artifacts, cameras, memory cards, computers and monitor calibration. He finishes the chapter with a discussion on Photoshop preferences. Chapter 2: Color Management Workflow, and Calibration is as the title suggests. The first few pages provide a high level overview of workflow management. Then Varis discusses color and light calibration. I must admit, he does have a rather funky looking set up of test targets that include the GretagMacBeth 24 patch plus Styrofoam cutouts and black traps. Varis provides a lengthy and detailed discussion on his calibration method. He also mentions that he prefers 8 bit processing as opposed to 16 bit. Moreover, he comments on the popular expose to the right practice. ::::The idea is good theory but bad practice because the histogram cannot tell you where you are placing your tones with any precision, and it can't tell you whether the histogram is appropriate for the subject. (What picture goes with this histogram?) The camera's histogram is only a general indication of the distribution of values in the camera-generated JPEG. It is usually a composite of all three channels. The RAW data has a much wider distribution of tones that will vary in each channel, so you may not know if you are clipping important data in the Red Channel simply by looking at the histogram display on the camera.:::: Chapter 3: Lighting and Photographing People is an overview of lighting. Varis uses different configurations of lights and reflectors to demonstrate various effects. The photographs contained in the book are helpful to understanding the concepts discussed. Chapter 4: The Color of Skin teaches the reader about proper skin tones. Varis introduces how to use curves effectively as well as how to adjust skin tones by using the CMYK values. He then finishes the chapter with a discussion on cultural and personal preferences. What one group of people might desire, others might oppose. So it is important to understand your audience. Chapter 5: Tone and Contrast: Color and B+W is an extremely interesting chapter because it discusses how to create B+W conversions and how B+W conversions can create better color photos. The first few pages discuss the channel mixer and split channels to obtain stunning B+W conversions. Next, Varis teaches the reader how B+W image can be used in luminosity blending to darken, lighten, and recover detail. I enjoyed part of the chapter because it opened up new avenues for processing my photos. Last, he discusses hue, saturation and toning effects. Chapter 6: Retouching is a thoroughly enjoyable chapter. Varis begins with a basic retouching where he uses the healing brushes to smooth away wrinkles. But then he kicks it up a notch by subtly using the dodge and burn tools to make the image just that much better. He then goes on to show how to use Hue/Saturation Repair to address red blotchy skin. I found the before and after pictures were amazing. Varis then walks his readers through an example of an attractive woman in her fifties. The before and after pictures are remarkable. He then shows a similar set of before and after pictures for a beautiful young model likely in her twenties. He wraps the chapter up by discussing some thinning techniques as well as some further skin processing. Chapter 7: Special Effects provides some useful tricks to generate interesting images. The four main themes of this chapter are soft focus, film grain and mezzotint, cross-processing, and tattoos. A substantial portion of the chapter is devoted to soft focus, which includes depth of field effects. Because photographers often want to create a softer, less harsh image or part of an image, I found this discussion helpful. I am not one for film grain and mezzotint. Similarly, I am not wild about cross-processing where you get unexpected colors in unexpected places. The last section on tattoos was interesting, even though I am not a tattoo fan. I liked the last part of the tattoo section where he described how to use Photoshop to create a fake tattoo. Chapter 8: Preparing for Print focuses the following key themes: sharpening, color management for print, soft proofing, desktop printing, and creative print finishing. I am going to comment on the first and last items. Varis' sharpening discussion is very helpful. Prior to reading this book, I simply used unsharp mask and was done. Now, when I want to get a sharper picture, I use multiple sharpening layers in luminosity blending modes as well as darkening and lighting blending modes. This technique has the advantage of offering better control of the halos. Creative print finishing provides some options for designing captivating borders or edges to the photographs. In his examples, Varis shows how the edges provide added pizzazz to the already great photo. Chapter 9: Parting Shots is a short chapter that provides some further high level commentary on workflow. Varis then walks the reader through the companion CD. I suspect most readers have already opened the CD and have been using the files all along, so this information is superfluous at this point. And last, he reminds readers that digital photography is still in its infancy. Much of what we have just learned is likely to become outdated soon. I believe, however, that if we understand and have developed a sense of adventure to experiment, our newly gained knowledge will help us as newer technologies and techniques emerge. Being an intermediate, at best, Photoshop user, I found Skin to be a valuable resource. I enjoyed learning by working through the examples. I also enjoyed seeing how just some subtle steps make a significant difference. I highly recommend this book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-09 08:11:53 EST)

This book truly did cover the full spectrum of my needs. I work as a graphic designer and use Photoshop on a daily basis. Over the past three years, I have been shooting a lot people pictures for newsletters and other promotional materials using a Canon EOS 20D. This book was an immediate help in "saving" some previously shot images and enhancing others. I am about to purchase some lighting equipment in order to take my skills to the next level. This book covers a variety of lighting setups and has helped me sort out what kind of equipment to purchase.
The techniques in Photoshop are explained in a step-by-step procedure and sample files are included on a CD. All concepts and techniques are illustrated very well. I go back to this book over an over again to try out new things or to review previously tried techniques. As the title indicates this is a complete guide. I have just scratched the surface of what I can gain from this book. It has an extensive chapter (Chapter 2) on color management and claibration which I need to dive into. Once I get the lights, I'll be refering back to it this (Chapter 3) for lighting setups. One of the best how-to books I have ever purchased and I have purchased a few (including Photoshop WOW!). The good:
-very useful diagrams of lighting setups -use of black & non-caucasian models (finally!) -great explanations of skin-tone characteristics The bad: -Confusing explanation for setting up complicated calibration (at beginning of book) -Portraits did not include photo data (ie, f-stop,shutterspeed,iso, etc) -Very little discussion of proper camera or flash settings (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-06-25 02:39:45 EST)

This book is full of useful information. Many of the techniques apply to not just people photography but to image making in general. The explainations are clear and the examples are easy to follow. It is a great referance and learning tool.

I purchased this book based on the sample chapter obtained from another website and from the other online reviews. What a big dissappointment for me. There were many errors in the book and I found the techniques very over complicated compared to several other authors.

This is a great book for editing people photos. As the name indicates, there are some very helpful methods to maintain color and texture that are so difficult to work on. Some of the suggestions are simple enough that even I, basically an amateur, can use them. Some methods are pretty far up the professional level. And some require more artistic judgement than I seem to possess. At times the processes presume more prior knowledge than amateurs usually have, therefore the steps to the finished product are more confusing than I can successfully use. Lots of excellent color photo examples.

This book is indespensible for serious amateur and professional photographers. You can spend hundreds of dollars buying a collection of other books and they won't approach the content and quality of this book. The content equals photography school material and then some. There's a CDROM included with images and Adobe .PDFs to accomplish for yourself what the author has written about. I've waited a long long time for this information. It sets the standard and the price is so low, it's unbelievable. I wish I worked for the author.

Lee Varis has written a superb treatise - and that's what it is - on "digitally lighting, photographing, and retouching faces and bodies". He joins a short list of Katrin Eismann and Steve Caplain as the best teachers of Photoshop I am aware of.
Eismann has written books on retouching and masking that are absolutely essential. Caplain has written the bible on Photoshop montage. Varis has written the last word on on photographing people in the digital age. One aside: all three of these authors are to be thanked for not attempting to be comedians along the lines of Scott Kelby, Deke McClelland and Russell Brown. Where this business of Photoshop authors trying to be "funny" started is unknown, but it is a ghastly thing when the author truly isn't funny. Anyway, Varis covers the waterfront here, when it comes to photographing people. Everything. Color. Lighting. Correction. Retouching. Printing. In all, this book is about making the most of the people you photograph. Profusely illustrated, Varis takes the reader step-by-step through each and every process. There are a lot of Photoshop books out there, but few truly great ones. This is one of the few. Jerry (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-01-30 16:15:17 EST)

I'm an amateur, but an avid one. Quick conclusion: this is one of the most rewarding books I've read in the past year. As a result of reading this book, my new year's resolution is to be a LOT more careful with lighting, colors, tones and sharpening. We'll see if I follow through!
Suggestion: skim the book first to understand the flow, then go through it again with the sample images (or some of your own) in detail a 2nd time. Caveats: after you get through the nice section on lighting, this book is very specific to Photoshop CS2. Lots of us are playing with the beta of CS3, so we'll hope there's an update coming soon. (Happy to be a beta tester, Mr. Varis!) The main audience of the book should be folks who both own CS2, and are willing to invest the time and sweat to improve their images. Funny story: I was on a Southwest plane this week, and the flight attendant was quite intrigued by the book's cover. She finally worked up the nerve to ask me what it was about, and looked relieved when she found out it was a (very) technical book on image calibration and post-processing. I have just finished my third (I think) reading of Skin and it has been a delight. First because the illustrative pictures and screen shots were large enough for my tired old eyes to see, secondly because now I can throw away all those notes on similar techniques, tricks, and shortcuts that I
have been collecting, and thirdly because of all the new (at least to me) techniques, tricks, and shortcuts that Varis has explained very well. A most valuable book for anyone engaged in portraiture or other photography of people. Dick Sallee (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-01-12 01:53:21 EST)

I have quite a few Photoshop/Digital Photography books as I am a commercial photographer. For me to buy another before CS3 comes out the book it would have to be unique. This one is.
For those of us who make our living out of photographing people, getting good skin tone is critical. If you want the only book that addresses this as its main focus, buy this one. If I get two or three new skills out of a Pshop book I consider it a success. This book was full of ideas for not only post processing, but calibration and shooting. Highly recommended. I went to the book store with a list of 6 photoshop/color books. Skin was not on the list cause I never heard of it. I always go straight to the photoshop section in the hopes of finding a new book. I'm tired of all the other books that talk about the same thing over and over. I needed a solution to color issues. I don't have major issues. I only have very subbtle issues and especially in the skin tones.
This is my new color bible. Wow, thank God Lee shared these secrets. This stuff is a must have for anyone that photographs people. It will solve the subtle problems you didn't even know you had. I felt like I hit the jackpot when I found this new book. I really felt this book explained a lot of things clearly. I'm high intermediate to advanced in PS CS2. You can not get to the next level without this book. Nothing else I've read solves the problem like this book does. Thank you Lee for doing this book. now that I know you're writing books, I can't wait for your next one. And thank you for personally responding to my email...I know you're busy. I was at the bookstore last night. I always go straight to the photoshop section in the hopes of finding a new book. I'm tired of all the other books that talk about the same thing over and over...especially tired of "tricks" techniques. I needed something that talks about skin color, calibration, and step-by-step actions.
I felt like I hit the jackpot when I found this new book. I really felt this book explained a lot of things clearly. Since it was $39.99 at the bookstore, I am ordering this book right after I write this review. I haven't tried the techniques yet, but of being an advanced user of photoshop, I notice right away that this book is a gem. The quality of the pictures inside are terrific. Thank you Lee for doing this book and I look forward to the other books you plan to put out! I appreciate your input on this page and sharing your website.
