In this book Marla Cilley explains in full detail how she recaptured
her life....she is an expert at helping others "get a grip" on housework &
decluttering your home and your life! Chapter by chapter she takes you
in baby steps so as not to overwhelm you...as housework can tend to be
very overwhelming......not with Marla...believe me, if you will just
give this book a chance - read a chapter each day - you will be amazed.
I had tried everything!!! I didn't even know about the book until a
friend referred me to www.flylady.net....I can assure you that if you
read this book, you will NEVER have to do spring housecleaning again.

I have really struggled with clutter. When we were married and my husband was deployed, in the apartment I had a narrow walkway from the door to the bedroom, and I kept stacking the dirty dishes to make room for more, everything else was lined with clutter. When we moved to a four bedroom home, one room and two closets were so filled, we could never use the stuff. Now, we are divorced, and I had a two bedroom apartment stuffed with boxes from the four bedroom home. Again with the walkways. I checked this book out from the library, kept re-reading the parts about what clutter does to our lives, then my former in-laws came to visit and I was mortified to admit, face to face, how I am raising our daughter in this mess. There it was, thrown open, no hiding, how I am living. So, I put the book in action, and with our daughter's help, within three days, the living room and kitchen were clean and clear. Now, we may sit down! And I may find the pet supplies, tools, towels, markers, shoes, and coats, right where they ought to be, right when I need them. It is so nice, and like Martha Cilley says, peaceful at home. I make a goal for this summer to clear the last untamed terrain of my own bedroom. All boxes, just a walkway. I have 6 weeks. Martha Cilley tells of a room she cleaned by giving away, throwing away, or putting away two items per day, until. I HIGHLY recommend "Sink Reflections".

A hoot - but seriously...
This book have a few veiled religious references, but they're not obtrusive and don't smack you in the face. It's well thought out, humorous, and I can see it working for people just like me - slobs! I've lived for years in the certain knowledge that I'll live in CHAOs (Can't Have Anyone Over syndrome) for my entire life. This book is going to change that. She's down to earth, simple to follow and has carved out a plan she frankly says rescued her from lived in clutter and depression. She works with a known behavioral truth - habits take about 27 days to create - or break. So, she puts that forward as the core of her approach to shaping up your home. She starts you out with one simple chore. Shine your sink. I loved that. Like she says, I can do that! For the terminally disordered this book might be the way back to a clean house and an ordered life. I like the book, only received it about a week ago and plan to use it for at least 27 days. I have faith...

This is the best book in its league and clearly gives the instructions to a home sweet home. Especially 'the shining sink' & '15-minute sessions to focus & finish once and all' has given me the confidence & motivation to do much better at housework and create time for other things.

I should have given 5 star to Sink Reflections, but the fact that it is rather too precise(without much giving flexibility to the reader/follower) has made me to rate it 4 star. So, instead of realizing the book word by word, I followed the general outline -since i have my own way of doing things- and now accomplish a lot better compared to past & be ready for guests at home any time.

The writer, Marla Ciley derived a specific jargon for this book and though some of them are funny such as CHAOS - Can't have anyone over syndrome-most of them are not.

This book is very helpful if you deal with any kind of clutter in your life, and you dont know where to start. It teaches you to approach clutter in your home 15 minutes at a time. Baby steps is the key. You didnt make the mess in a day, and its going to take longer than that to get the clutter out of your life. Key here is to jump in and start someplace. Love this book :)

Reviewer Permalink
This is the ONLY housekeeping book you'll need. Ever. If you feel the need to have two, then add Don Anslet's "Clutter's Last Stand" and you're all set. "Sink Reflections" transformed our home and I sure wish I had read it YEARS ago. Ya know what? It doesn't really take that much time to keep a tidy house IF you know what you're doing & you stay on task, and that's where this book comes in. I love her philosophy of "Blessing" a home by cleaning it. That concept totally changed how I view housework and chores. I used to think cleaning was thankless and annoying; now I see that it's a way to show love for my family and appreciation for my home.

Great plan for every area of a home and lots of motivation to get up and get going. This book is all business, but funny as well. It isn't a quick fix -it's a realistic and supportive approach to getting organized and staying that way.

I marked sections of the book for later reference and keep it handy. The book includes short commentaries and examples from folks who use her approach, which are very motivational to read. Best tip EVER: using a timer when cleaning a room. It's surprising how much can be accomplished in only 10 minutes when you stay on task. This book won't disappoint; if you're looking to have a tidy, organized, pleasant home this is THE book to have. You'll love your home!!!

To be fair, this is probably a good book for anyone who has not read the Sidetracked Home Executives. I guess my mistake was that I read the Sidetracked Home Executives book first and so scrubbing my kitchen sink every day didn't really make me feel any better. My kitchen sink was always clean since doing the dishes and cleaning the sink were already done once I had finished my cards every day.

Although not near as funny and entertaining as the S.H.E books, this is still a great book for people who just want a starting point to cleaning up the clutter in their homes.

I bought this for my daughter, to help her with her house, life, and anything else. I didn't want her to be insulted, so I read it and told her I bought it for me but thought she might like it too. It started out great, great ideas, funny, fun. But it got a little too over the edge....compulsive...neat freakish towards the end. I told my daughter to try to incorporate SOME of the Flylady's tips into her routine. She hasn't read it yet, but I'm hoping she learns something from it, because she is a very disorganized person. It seemed there were some discrepancies in the book about her life, which makes you feel she's making all of this up to make money, not to share her experience. Hopefully my daughter doesn't catch on to some of it.

The FlyLady is not telling you something you don't know, but that's kind of how therapy works. I really felt that she could relate to me and the simple suggestions she makes work. I've only been doing it a couple of weeks, but already I am more inspired and my husband is too!

I've spent time on the Flylady web site, and for a period of time received her email reminders. I thought perhaps the book would help me create my own reminders, based on my schedule, and give me a hard copy of the information on her web site.

It does that, however it is full of typos, poor grammar, and is extremely poorly edited. I am consistently disappointed to see her books, as well as Leanne Ely's, published in such an amateur way.

I also must add my agreement with another poster regarding the website and many of the "reminders" you receive with her system. It seems to be one fawning advertisement for her products after another. You can accomplish the same results with other dusters, other timers, other sink plugs, other calendars. That adds to my overall disappointment with the books and the system.

I've seen this system referenced numerous times over the years on Christian Websites and when I spotted it at the library this week, I grabbed it.

In contrast to the minority of readers who did not care for Cilley's writing style, I found it an easy, breezy read with a great deal of motivation to do better, little by little.

While I've always kept my house tidy, in the back of my mind I've never felt like it was truly orderly. After leaving the Navy about 9 months ago to be a stay-at-home wife and mother, I've had to deal with my own expectations of what a SAHW/M should "be" and "do" and this book has already helped me to put a "chink" in the clutter I've accumulated over the years.

Cilley has a massive Website that I find rather difficult to navigate... which is ironic considering her work of decluttering... but the information you read in the book is found on the site and in free email digests that she sends out through the week.

My only gripe with the book is that a "checklist" or outline of the different aspects of the system would have been helpful. I read the book in a day and then went back with a notebook to take notes as necessary.

Definitely recommended. You may want to read Judi Culbertson's "The Clutter Cure" for insight into the "why" of clutter and good motivation to get rid of the junk.

I have been a member of FlyLady since early 2000. When I first found her, my home was a dump and I was severely depressed. I used Flylady to change my life. So, when this book first came out, I thought: Why Should I Buy This Book? I Don't Need It! After all, my control journal was made, blah blah blah. However, I found that this book is a compilation of the best of FlyLady -- a wonderful, portable version of FlyLady's system! Because it is a book, I don't need to be glued to the computer to benefit from Flylady - I can use my copy of the book to fill those lost moments in the day usually spent waiting for something or someone. Reading it keeps Marla's encouragements forefront in my mind, "You are not behind!" "You can do anything for 15 minutes" "Housework done incorrectly still blesses my home". Regarding format, one of the things that I like about this book is that testimonials are in boxes, which means that I can skip the ones that I am tired of or that don't interest me, allowing me to focus on the meat of the book, which is considerable. My copy is now so dog-eared that I really need to get a new one! The greatest thing about the book form is that you do not need internet access to benefit from the life strategies taught by Marla Cilley (FlyLady). The focus of this book is feeling good about your home and life, taking care of yourself and doing it all without stress or guilt. I highly recommend this book!

I wasted my money ! There are no secrets uncovered in this book-just some plain COMMON SENSE ! You can save 10 $ if you just remember to clean you house daily ( just break it up in little areas do not try to clean it all at once), and frequently decluttering by donating stuff to SALVATION ARMY or tossing it out. That's it !!! Just admit it, most people know what needs to be done, and don't need books with different gimmicks promising miracles to help them. However, it seems that I am in the minority regarding this book. It seems that FLYLADY has almost cult like following. I can't believe some people spend this much time writing long accolades/comments . I guess this book is helpful to many women. Unfortunately, I am not one of them. Certainly, I do not want to stand in the way of anybody that can benefit from this book and having their life changed. Anyway, before purchasing -check out the website to get a better idea about her philosophy.

This is a great system for keeping your house organized and establishing routines

You can do anything for 15 minutes!

There is also a Yahoo group you can join that sends reminders about what to do that day.

Each week is focussed on a different area of the house

I loved this

Step 1 - Declutter your house 15 minutes a day
Step 2 - Start cleaning - 15 minutes

Best organizational and routine book ever (and I've tried a lot)

If you want to buy this book, I would really recommend reading some reviews with one star rating at first. I really regret about not doing it.

I started reading this book and was excited to start a "new life". Instead, it just made me feel miserable. I was stressed out every day about putting my house in order and everything.(Setting a timer, wearing shoes and etc) Finally I got depressed and don't even have any desire to open this book again. The author is very preachy. She pushes you and wants you to live the way how it worked for her. NOt all people are the same. According to her book I'm the only one who has to clean around the house and I have to get over the fact that my husband and my kids don't want to help. ( I don't want my kids to grow up lazy and selfish).

I don't think the writer is being honest. Check out her website and see how cluttered it looks. She should put it in order at first before teaching others how to be organized and clean.

If you really want to organize your house and make it look beautiful- check some other books. I love the one by Martha Stewart "Good things for organizing". She really made me going... It wasn't a feeling of depression- I was excited to make it clean and cute. And I felt...relaxed and happy.

If the walls are closing in because they're stacked floor to ceiling, or you're a victim of CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and you're afraid they'll find out how you really live, or simply sick and tired of "the stress from the mess"; then this book is just what you need!
From her own experiences, Marla shows you how to "babystep" your way from faltering to FLYing

I am a member of flylady. This book made it seem not so overwelming as do the emails. I liked the section in there that talks about...if you have to have it done in a hurry. It jump started me. Now I can go back and take babysteps to build a routine.
Thanks FLYLADY!!
