If you like single action, this is the book for you! Taffin really know his stuff, when it comes to single actions. I thought Keith's book was good, but this one is better. I keep reading it, over and over. It also has some neat pictures of single actions, and some good leather.

John Taffin's books on sixguns very much represent his love for the single action revolver. This is another excellent, unmatched work by Mr Taffin and the photography is without match. If you have any interest at all in sixgins, buy this book. Beware though, you will find yourself on the slippery slope of commissioning custom sixguns with your retirement savings.

Lots of pictures... Lots of history. What I like about it is it covers the range of single actions from the 1800s to present... and not just Colts! I am a fan of the Ruger Single Actions and there is several sections that cover the different calibers and models. Plus Taffin always has a 'story' to tell too! When I want to relax I enjoy just thumbing through this book and rereading a section. Highly recommended.

Pretty good, but for gun enthusiasts like me who read a lot of gun magazines, especially Taffin's articles, there was no new material. If you've been reading Taffin's articles, there's nothing new for you here.
It wasn't quite as good as "Big Bore Handguns" and not nearly as good as "Big Bore Sixguns" which had much more original information. It's pretty good eye-candy, but I'd recommend it for people who've ALREADY read the other two, above, books and are just craving for more. Even the photos weren't as good as his last two - more like leftover and staged photos. OR, ESPECIALLY... If you HAVEN'T read the above two and AREN'T familiar with Taffin's writings and are interested in single-action revolvers, then you'll benefit from this book a LOT. I hope he, someday, does a "Double-Action Sixguns" book. I'm sure it's just a matter of time. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-18 09:10:07 EST)

I have many, many books about guns, and this is without a doubt the BEST one that I have ever owned. The illustrations are superb, and Mr. Taffin's style of writing makes you think he is talking to you. I highly recommend this book for anyone that loves the single action revolver, but I have to warn you, it will make you want more and more guns!

This is a very attractive volume. The abundant color photographs seem to stand out from the page and GLOW.
The book itself is a very comprehensive exploration of the single action revolvers of history and those of the present day. From mainstream to the esoteric, the material in this book will contribute to the education of anybody with an interest in single action revolvers. There is much detailed information for the novice and a wealth of practical data for those already well steeped in the subject. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-07 01:30:43 EST)

I want to apologize for what's going to be a short review, but I want to get back to this terrific book.
I've been a big fan of John Taffin's writing for years now. No other gunwriter carries the banner of classic gunwriting the way he does. I've owned BIG BORE HANDGUNS and BIG BORE SIXGUNS for some time now, and I've had the good fortune to meet Mr. Taffin online at the Sixgunner.com forums. These two were among my favorite books - I could always pick them up and open them at random and just lose myself in the great writing and photographs. But when this book (SINGLE ACTION SIXGUNS) was announced, I was skeptical - what else could JT even SAY on the subject? Well, a lot, it turns out. And Mr. Taffin doesn't just repeat himself from the other books or from his Guns/American Handgunner articles. This is new stuff, with new photos (TONS of them - better than ever, and in ALL color). There are 336 pages of great info (and COLOR photos - excellent, sharp photos) on all sorts of things, ranging from old original models to modern single-action sixguns, to mini-SAs, to replicas, customs, grips, tips, hunting, leather and - of course - John's ongoing search for the perfect packing gun. This is John Taffin's best book so far! Now, please bear in mind that I'm not all that huge a single-action revolver fan. I've owned a few (only have one right now), but I'm MUCH more into double-action revos and even semiautomatics. This book, though, has completely captivated me. I'm so glad I bought it (and, by the way, Amazon has a great price compared to what I've seen at the local bookstore). If you're a gun guy or you're thinking about buying a gift for one, look no further and BUY THIS GREAT BOOK! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-12 16:35:39 EST)

John Taffin has been enamored with the single-action revolver for over 50 years. His fascination runs back to the "B" grade westerns of his youth, and he has been shooting, loading for and hunting with single action revolvers since the 1950s. One of the central tenets of his soul is that he is a teacher. The synergy of his love for sixguns and his superb teaching skills (as well as decades of hard work), have led Taffin to become one of today's premier gunwriters. "Single Action Sixguns" is a rich and fertile compilation of the experiences derived from five decades of handling, shooting, customizing, competing with and hunting with single-action revolvers of every imaginable size shape, caliber and configuration. The knowledge captured in these pages is both insightful and entertaining. The extensive color photography is truly spectacular, and any fan of the gun-maker's art will find the significant collection of fine sixguns captured in these pages to be inspirational. It could easily be argued that no other man has put as much time, effort or thought into customizing, collecting or competing with the single-action revolver, and this book is the culmination of half a century of John's passion. Chapters cover the multitude of different makes and models of single-action sixguns, customizing them, exotic grips, fine leather, hunting with the revolver, time-proven loading techniques and tips, and the history of the single-action revolver from the early Colt cap-n-ball revolvers through the thoroughly modern Freedom Arms masterpieces. The writing is in Taffin's clear, entertaining, and knowledgeable style. The firearms enthusiast will find no finer book on sixguns, their history, function and use, than "Single-action Sixguns" by John Taffin. Good teachers are a blessing indeed.
