This book, although purchased by many for Keller's Real Estate knowledge and skills, can be applied to almost any sales position in a "buyer's market". Good sound personal development advice.

I think that this book is a must for the real estate agents especially during these difficult economic times. It is very helpful to read about how the authors explain real estate cyclicality. They say that seasonal cycles occur within a single year, while economic shifts happen over several years. Seasonal cycles are short, and agents are able to deal with them better because they feel predictable and manageable, and economic shifts feel unpredictable, indefinite, and overwhelming.
In this book, the authors introduce readers to the Twelve Tactics for Tough Times, and I believe that if agents follow them, they will increase the chances of making it during this recession. The good thing that many of these tactics do not require you to spend much money, which is key in this environment. If you like other books by these authors, you will love this book and it will give you inspiration. - Mariusz Skonieczny, author of Why Are We So Clueless about the Stock Market? In the beginning of the book, Keller outlines his history in real estate and the challenges he had going through recessions. He brings that point to the current marketplace and how we all have to "shift" our thinking in order to cope with current conditions.
Like his Millionaire book, the ideas in the book are not rocket science, but the foundation is great and I believe the way he lays out the book is better than anything else on the market. One of the keys that too many agents and brokers miss is mindset. You have to be looking at every situation the correct way. There are opportunities in every market, even this one. Great read! "Shift" was a worthwhile read. As a new agent, it's scary to think your new license won't take you anywhere because the market is so bleak, but this book offers a lot of hope and, more important, direction, as to how to get through any market. The Gary Keller books I have read, so far, have been awesome, just as joining the Keller Williams team.

As you would probably come to expect from Gary's books, they are quick and easy to read, I was able to get through this one in about 10 days. Gary reminds you to remain focused on the customers and your goals, not to get wrapped up in blame or other negative mindsets. He takes the time to show you how this market is the one that helps agents jump ahead of the competition like no other market. I'm glad I read it and I've been encouraging other agents to read it as well.

Let's face it, we're in a crash and real estate prices in the United States across multiple markets are in a free fall. Gary Keller, in his newest book, SHIFT, accurately depicts this as a cycle.
But in human terms, this cycle is taking an emotional and mental toll on many of our agents and brokers across the country. The knowledge you will gain from this book will help put some reason and sanity back into your thought process. For instance, you can learn about: 1. When we can get out of this hole, arguing that local markets may swing faster than national averages. 2. How to start being realistic on pricing. 3. How to start understanding market trends in your area; when inventories start shifting from a buyer's market to seller's and vice versa. 4. How to generate leads outside of your comfort zone [example: I have personally seen Europeans come in and start snatching foreclosures -- they are bringing in the euros. Start leveraging your web contacts in other parts of the world.] 5. Research into other real estate instruments such as other foreclosures, tax liens, etc. Overall, recommended reading for the real estate agent to the real estate investor -- learn as much as you can about your market to give yourself an edge. I am glad I bought this book. I bought and enjoyed the Millionaire RE Agent and RE Investor.
That being said, I don't think it is a great book and that's why I gave it 3 stars. I think the author is a little too dependent on scripts and formulas to work your way out of a slump. If he would update it a tad to account for the fact that most consumers are extremely averse to script heavy agents, it would have been better. But I do like the fact that he is inspiring, and stresses the can-do attitude that hey, no one's coming to help, you have got to do it yourself. I appreciate that inspiration. I wish he would have written more on that. On the other hand, if you are a less tech heavy agent, you will like his very detailed and practical methods. It is not my cup of tea (yet, maybe the shift will change my mind!). (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-12-18 00:43:59 EST)

The market is changing, and Realtors need to stay focused, on task, and must adapt to the shift! The book is well divided into sections focusing on the attitudes an agent must have and the changes they must make.

In fact, I consider myself very fortunate to be one of the first among my peers to learn, practice, and implement the Twelve Tactics for Tough Times. In my 30+ years of residential real estate, I'm proud that I have weathered every cycle in the past, but today's circumstances are different... and this is the tool that I need now." The information in the "Shift" is timely and perfectly relevant to the real estate market we are currently experiencing. I am a national instructor and have heard the buzz from agents in both the northwest and southwest parts of the Country about how valuable the information contained in this book is. This book encouraged me to take specific actions regarding my business that will ensure my success as I build my business in the current real estate market. Gary Keller has done it again by focusing on the essentials of the "now" without comprimising the future. Avoiding the truth does not change the truth, and Keller hits the truth straight on with powerful strategies to succeed in todays market, while preparing for greater market share on the backside as this market corrects.

Do you want to learn not only to survive in today's market but to THRIVE?! The 12 strategies taught in this book will help you use this market to your advantage. The market shift can be a gift that will inspire you to buckle down, go back to the basics (whoever said you could NOT do the basics!), and strengthen your real estate business. When the market turns around, those agents who read this book and follow these strategies will be the ones who are on top! The information included in each chapter teaches me what to do and the inspirational quotes at the beginning of each one inspire me to get it done. I read it with a highlighter, a pen for underlining, a notebook for jotting down key ideas, and little sticky flags for marking special sections. This will be a reference book I will use over and over as I continue to build my business!

At an interview a sports writer asked Wayne Gretsky "How do you get to the puck before everyone else does." Wayne replied "Everyone skates to the puck. I skate to where the puck will be!"
Once again Gary has provided timely and intuitive advice for the Real Estate professional at the cutting edge before everyone else has realized what has happened. Gary, Dave & Jay give 12 key tactics and if you follow them then your business will come and help build your business power and thrive through this shift and beyond. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to "outskill" the competition and power through this market. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-13 05:06:53 EST)

READ THIS BOOK! First, it gives an agent the required mindset to really make it happen in a big way, in the market we are in now. The step by step action plan and the strategies will move the agent away from behind the slower moving crowd, to the front of the pack. An agent should be leading the sellers and the buyers to their goals, in a timely way, and this book is specific about how to do it.
Gary, Dave and Jay have done it again! Agents: buy their "Millionaire Real Estate Agent" book, couple it with this "Shift" book, and you will find enormous success in the real estate market-this one! THEN buy their "Millionaire Real Estate Investor" book, and you will be more than set! These 3 books are THE path to huge career opportunity, and ultimately financial freedom. The benefit is for both the agent and their clients. "SHIFT" shows you that THIS is the time, you should not be waiting for ANYTHING, do it right now. Empowering!! -Beverly Steiner (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-13 05:06:53 EST)

I have had a very successful real estate practice for over 20 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our housing markets have generally been bullet proof from economic downturns. The current economic turmoil has created fear, anger and chaos in our Bay Area real estate communities. The Shift is a blue print for Realtors who are interested in having a real estate practice that thrives and flourishes through this difficult time for consumers and business alike. The twelve steps/chapters outline an operating plan that, if followed, will create the desired results - a business that not only serves consumers at the highest levels, but a business that is profitable. The business principles in this book are simply brilliant. Congrats for the work of the authors have done to throw our industry a life perserver that will serve all us the rest of career.

This book is an incredible TOOL offering insight and strategies to thriving in a shifted Real Estate market. I have used Gary Keller's new book as a model in my Real Estate Business, and literally feel insulated from the market shift we are going through. I am employing the business models/tacits and stratgegies he teaches in my everyday operation. Many agents today are are shooting in the dark and working very hard doing the same things they have always done.... but they are missing how to employ the strategic shift in their busienss model that helps them to understand that cutting costs, getting back to the fundamentals of prospecting, targeting the foreclosure and short sale market and many other things is how to thrive and survive in this market.Gary really offers incredible insight into all of these fundamentals, tactics and startegies that make a world of difference in your day to day operation!!! It is challenging, uplifting, powerful and motivating... Getthe book, read it, and DO IT!!!

SHIFT was fantastic! If you are a real estate agent I'm sure your business has shifted to some degree. If you don't implement these 12 tactics, you may find yourself working in another field, or maybe you already are. It was so refreshing to read a real estate book that is accurate with what is going on! Sounds easy? Well it is. The truth is everyone can do, but not everyone will (quoted from the book). Agents in my office that have implemented these 12 tactics are pulling unbelievable numbers. Our entire training system is now revolving around these 12 tactics and by the way, it's not a spend money book. You can implement these tactics in your business without spending anything. If you are an agent, do yourself a favor, get the book and master it!

Shift Happens...it is a fact of life. You just have to decide if you are going to let the shift that has occurred in the real estate market knock you out or not. If you are a real estate agent, like me that has had a very successful career and loves working in real estate but has grown weary of the challenges of today's market, before you decide to find another career give yourself the gift of this book. Reading it will re-energize you and make you love real estate again. It provides a very clear plan of action through its Twelve Tactics outlining exactly what you must do to get to the other side. While other less resilient agents fall away, you will be gaining market share that will never be lost when the market recovers. Think about it...the most rewarding things you have accomplished in your life were not easy. How lucky we are in real estate that during one of our most challenging hours, Gary Keller, with his first-hand wisdom of real estate market shifts, along with Dave Jenks and Jay Papasan, has provided a road map for how to get to the other side. All you have to do is buy this excellent book and put its tactics to work. SHIFT Happens...do something about it!
A Tip...there is a coupon in the back of the book that allows you to take the book to OfficeMax and get it spiral bound at a discount. It will end up costing you about $2.50. Do it! You will use this book regurlarly as a reference book and adding the spiral binding make it much easier to use. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-10-07 03:56:04 EST)

Ask anyone in the real estate industry what they are challenged with right now. Chances are they will say 1)"I can't get my buyer to get off the fence", or 2) "I can't get my seller to be realistic about pricing their home", or 3) "I can't keep the transaction from falling apart". SHIFT identifies specific strategies to help overcome these and many of the other issues that we are facing right now in the real estate market. SHIFT is easy to read and provides timely, practical ideas and tools to help agents, builders, developers, lenders, etc.. not only survive in this market but THRIVE. I only wish that I had read SHIFT over a year ago! This may be one of the best real estate books ever written.

After to close to 15 years in the business, I can honestly say I've seen the best and worst a market can offer anyone who's practicing real estate. Being used to a great or average market, it was tough knowing what to do when this shift occured. Thankfully, I was introduced to do this "how to" manual. It touches on every issue an agent has to confront on their way to successfully beating this market. This is a must read for every serious real estate practioneer.

Although SHIFT is intended for those in the real estate profession, the 12 tactics and strategies presented are just as applicable to anyone who is in business. The market will always shift, and this book clearly identifies why and then goes the extra mile by providing strategies for real estate professionals to get through this market instead of waiting for the market to change. This should be a must read for anyone even thinking of getting into real estate ... and a must read for those who already are! In a time when just about everyone is nervous about what has happened, this provides some "sense and sensibility" for us to share with the consumer.

Gary Keller is an exceptionally clear and insightful thinker. He does a brilliant job of organizing and presenting material in such a way that his reader can more easily understand it and, of greater importance, then put it to effective use. If you want great information about how to implement proven ideas, this is the book for you! 'Shift' is a road map which could guide and inform the development of real estate agents' careers during trying times. Agents can now push aside fear and transform their businesses!!

This book is such a GIFT to all real estate agents. This book does an awesome job inspiring and motivating agents to thrive in a shifted market. It's a very comfortable read.. as if Gary Keller is having a "let's get real about your business" consultation face to face with you. A must read for all agents who want to master ANY market!!

This is a good book for the times. It helped me get a deeper understanding of the market and how to adapt my marketing efforts to reflect current conditions. Shifts come and go, therefore we should not be suprised by them but actually anticipate them and use them as a way to thrive instead of merely surviving.
I have a real estate backgound going back to the mid 90's. For the past seven years I've have worked as a mortgage broker. Gary's comments concerning mortgage approvals was a little bit off, to say the least. Not sure where he's getting his information from. 1. A Preapproval letter from a loan officer does not mean the application has already been fully underwritten by the lender. The application is fully underwritten only when there's a fully executed contracted, among other items. 2. Appraisers do not generally welcome telephone calls from real estate agents- for various reasons (although I have been known to get the appraiser, the realtor & myself on a 3-way to try and iron out an issue- generally concerning value/comps. But NOT some highly emotional, highly stressed agent conducting themselves in a highly-unprofessional manner, trying to bully the appraiser into making the numbers magically work!) 3. He recommends using several lenders for one transaction. (A practice promoted throughout the KW organization, that many Top Producers disagree with) Although I do agree with the second opinion concept. 4. He gives the criteria for choosing a lender. Great info, however it is well known that his company here in Nashville made their choice solely on the lenders ability to compensate them for doing business. (But we are assured though, that this is NOT a kickback/RESPA violation) 5. Finally, I fear that his admonition to control 'the process' may be misunderstood by most real estate agents. Controlling is not about demanding, bullying, whinning, screaming, cursing, etc. There are thousands of emotionally immature agents in the business who've never read a book or taken a class on selling, negotiation, influence, etc. Controlling the process involves mutual co-operation and respect. Perhaps real estate agents will do well to read other books on the subject of selling, negotiation, and the art of influence to complete their knowledge base.
