“An alarming but necessary book that reads like a thriller. By raising uncomfortable questions, Ken Timmerman has performed a significant public service.”
–Michael Medved, nationally syndicated talk radio host Some have called it the CIA’s greatest covert operation of all time. It is an intelligence war conducted behind the scenes, aimed at confusing, misleading, and ultimately defeating the enemy. The goal is nothing less than toppling the regime in power. A network of agents has been planted at key crossroads of power, stealing secrets, planting disinformation, and cooking intelligence. The plan involves sophisticated political sabotage operations that bring in opposition forces who can challenge the regime openly, in a way the CIA cannot. The scope is breathtaking. Who is the target of this vast, sophisticated CIA operation? Not the mullahs in Tehran or North Korea’s power-mad Kim Jong Il; the target is America’s president, George W. Bush. Drawing on exclusive information from senior government officials, intelligence operatives, and many others, investigative reporter Kenneth Timmerman provides the full, untold story of the sabotage that occurs behind the scenes at key government agencies like the CIA and State Department–and the profound effect it has on America’s ability to confront its most dangerous enemies. In Shadow Warriors, Timmerman brings to light the vast underground working to undercut our nation’s efforts to win the war on terror–revealing the when, where, how, and who for the first time. He also exposes the Democratic politicians who have sold out America’s national security for political gain. In Shadow Warriors you’ll learn: •How the CIA and State Department sabotaged the administration’s Iraq war plans from the start–sparking the insurgency in the process •How a high-level State Department official gathered aides after Bush’s reelection to insist they owed no allegiance to the president or his policies •How pre-war intelligence on Iraq was cooked–not by the Bush administration, but by its opponents •How and why the shadow warriors have leaked details of virtually every covert U.S. intelligence tool used in the war on terror •How the leaks have devastated our efforts to fight terrorism–such as when a key U.S. ally rebuffed the CIA director’s request for assistance by saying, “You Americans can’t keep secrets” •Why U.S. intelligence refused to examine important documents detailing the secret Iraqi networks that became the heart of the insurgency •How newly discovered Iraqi government documents reveal the extent of Saddam Hussein’s ties to international terrorists and the truth about his WMD arsenal Shadow Warriors shows that George W. Bush never got the first rule of Washington: People are policy. He allowed his political enemies to run roughshod over his administration. This insider’s look at secret White House meetings, political backstabbing, and war-room summits is an eye-opening account of the mind-set that is crippling our effectiveness in Iraq and around the world. |

Shadow Warriors is biased. How could it not be? The author, who is known for his scrutiny and meticulous research is biased towards those that would, and did, advance their political agenda ahead of the good of their country. Further, it is clear that in some extreme cases of borderline treason that Timmerman clearly and definitively chronicles, lives of our soldiers may have been lost due to the actions of the Shadow Warriors. This cabal of fervent anti-Bush operatives are every bit as dangerous as the terrorists that we face today. The information contained in Shadow Warriors is well organized, chronologically laid out, and fully subnoted. But the reason I approve of this book, and recommend it, is that it is based on researched fact of the events that brought the Bush Administration to it's knees in Iraq.
During the debacles of the senate 9/11 hearings, the farce surrounding the contemptible Joe Wilson and his posturing non-covert wife Valerie Plame which ended up in a lame prosecution of Scooter Libby, it was clear to anyone paying attention the Richard Clarke, George Tenet, and particularly Joseph Wilson were of dubious character. They were egotistical, contradictory, and disingenous. After reading the scheming and manipulating from seriously notorious political operatives within the internal sewer that is the CIA, it is clear why political neophytes Colin Powell and George Bush never really understood the danger in leaving the Clintonista's unchecked and in power within the agency. By the time Porter Goss is sent in to clean up the agency, the damage done by Tyler Drumheller in particular is immense and irrepairable. This book chronicles mistake after mistake in letting an agenda driven cabal within our own government take down a well-meaning, but gullible, President. I would recommend that those that wish to believe this book is all conservative spin and an attempt to prop up GWB, read more of Timmerman's work, The China Threat (Bill Gertz), and See No Evil by Bob Baer. Baer's account of the destruction from within during the latter Clinton years is related from a career CIA middle-east operative who leaves reluctantly as the political power seekers wrest control from those that at one time knew how to run the agency. It squares nicely with Timmerman's work. Even though this work is clearly against the anti-Bush Administration cabal, Timmerman represents Powell, Rice, Rumsfeld, and Goss as hopelessly inept in dealing with the level of malevolence from many individuals who in previous decades would have been found guilty of treason, and very likely executed. Their is no attempt to produce a "Bush =Good, Clintonista's=Bad" atmosphere in this book. It is simply critical of those who played politics instead of doing their jobs as public servants. The performance of the media as willing accomplices to the Shadow Warriors is enough to assure you would never buy another copy of anything related to the Mainstream Media. It also paints an accurate picture of the real Carl Levin who is clearly a senator who should be voted out of office at the first opportunity. Levin is a menace to the the security of the USA. All in all, this is a fast read, similar to a Lee Child, Vince Flynn, or David Hagberg fictional novel, but it will anger you viscerally as it leaves no doubt that our country has been damaged, and in some cases intentionally so, simply to bring down this administration who in comparison to the Shadow Warriors is almost pollyannish. The true evildoers threatening our country are the elitists playing political games within our defense agencies while the good men and women of our fighting forces pay for their amusements and political agendas with their lives. Final thought after reading this book? Eradicate the CIA and completely rebuild the agency. It is dysfunctional and beyond repair. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-01 19:24:59 EST)

This book is so informative and tells the real truth of how far the Democratic Party will go to lie and cheat and how corrupt the CIA is. Also, this tells the real truth of what and why it was important to stop Saddam and what a moral man Pres. Bush really is. He really wants to do the best for all of us in America and keep us safe.

Ken Timmerman's book is not an easy book to read. As I read it I had to stop and process the fact that liberals lied, people died, and that it is a wonder America's response to 911 ever got off the ground. The opposition of the Democratic Congress is well known and documented. What is not common knowledge is that there are people of significant influence in the State department and CIA who are in direct opposition to carrying out the wishes of our commander-in-chief, President Bush. Timmerman calls them holdovers and plants of the Clinton administration who sabotage the efforts of the present administration to plan and execute a unified foreign policy of diplomacy and true information needed for the daily intelligence reports to the president. Upon finished this book the words of Lincoln lingered in my mind: A house divided against itself cannot stand.

The leftist moles that have infiltrated our government need to be stopped. I suspected but never realized how they leaked classified info and fought against the Republican administration in a way that would cause any Republican that did such a thing to be thrown into jail for years. These actions should be prosecuted for the treason that it is. This is an eye-opening book, and all good-hearted Democrats should read it to find out what is being perpitrated by those they vote for!

This book is a must read for anyone trying to understand how the greatest nation on earth can seem to suffer so many missteps, mistakes, and downright defeats not only in the post-war period in Iraq but in our foreign policy overall. The degree to which our country is being undermined by some of its own citizens is astounding, and the reader should prepare to be enraged by the behind-the-scenes details revealed in this book.

What a great book. This should be required reading in every class room. Really is unreal to know how many people in congress and in our government agencies have underminded this country and need to be held accountable for the destruction of our safety.

This book is very well documented. I would not have learned this information about traitors in the CIA from any other source. In fact, I would not have even been aware of the situation had it not been for this book.
I have two sons who served in Iraq and it grieves me deeply to learn that these "Shadow Warriors" endangered their lives. I was shocked to learn that our tax dollars were misdirected to fund the very insurgents who have made it so difficult for us to achieve success in Iraq. It takes an author like this who is familiar with the press to investigate the leaks that come from the highest levels of government workers who are not elected but hide in "public service" careers. The detailed revelations in this book were a real eye-opener for me. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-18 22:40:51 EST)

Timmerman provides some alarming insight to subversive activity going on in our government at the national level. His research appears to be extensive and provides many examples to support his concerns. He also reveals how the White House seems oblivious to this activity which repeatedly undermines the policies of our nation. Carl Levine and other key figures in the House and Senate are revealed to be, in fact, enemies of the United States. A scary read.

This book allows you to compare the news reports we all see in the mainstream media, and the left-wing blogs, to the actual situations existing within the Pentagon, State Department, Defense Department, FBI, and the CIA. There are moles, leakers, malcontents, and subversives who are not in step with the present republican administration and they have been undermining the Presidency of George W. Bush ever since the day he took office. That he has accomplished what he has in the light of the almost insurmountable entrenched opposition that exists, is "incredible."
Our government was fashioned and envisioned by our founders as "of the people, by the people, and for the people," (and I know Lincoln said that) but hundreds of appointed career government employees and elected officials have prostituted themselves to the politics (and policies) of destruction. They seem dedicated to radical idealism, personal hubris, and special interests all leading to the detriment of the synergistic operation of government, departure from financially sound policies, the failure to carry out of the will of the people ("the good of the electorate,") and the debasement of sound, practical foreign affairs. These destructive actions seem to be paramount and to them, and a noble motivation for their actions thus they concentrate on subverting the conservative administration for whom they did not vote. Read the "Reagan Diaries" and you will see he had some of the same frustrations with these liberal activists, more properly called traitors. To those who say "that is the way Washington works" this book should convince you that under the present undermining of our government we will spend ourselves out of financial stability, alienate our allies all over the world, and engender a lack support for our efforts to encourage democracy to replace cruel dictatorships. Our government is scary...it is controlled behind the scenes by arrogant and highly entrenched bureaucrats, and self-interest is their highest motivation. This book gives names dates, places, and will surprise you as it is obvious the author writes with authority and unquestioned accuracy. Read it with an open mind, and above all, read it before you vote! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-11 13:40:11 EST)

In the sake of honesty I have to say that I only finished 80% of the book, and had to put it down due to a combination of work and how depressing it had become.
I picked up this book after reading the claims it made on the dust cover. My reaction was that these sounded just ludicrous and I wanted to read it to get a glimpse at how crazy the arguments behind them would be. Although I feel that the War in Iraq is a necessary front in the War on Terror that must be won, and even though the author shares this opinion even more strongly, I was thoroughly in the state of mind to reject what must be a crazy set of conspiracy theories. By page 100 however I was surprised to find myself increasingly convinced and furthermore sick to my stomach. The main thesis of his book is that ideology has trumped duty in large swaths of government, particularly the State Department and the CIA. This has led to a "self licking ice cream cone" problem where those opposed to Bush's (which they refer to as Bush's, not uncommon linguistically, but never seem to recognize at the same time as the constitutionally elected government's) agenda have basically dragged their feet in enacting policy, or at worst intentionally mismanaged the conduct of their sworn duty to try to ensure policy failures. This is not an organized conspiracy with secret meetings or a hierarchy so much as it is the effect of ideology taken too far by a critical mass of individuals. The most haunting part of this book is the likelihood that we are our own worst enemy in the pursuit of the war on terror, and that the increasingly divisive politics in American society has gone beyond honest debate to the potential of breaking down our government's ability to function with any degree of effectiveness. It's hard to tell where the impetus for this comes from though, whether this is a modern phenomenon or, as the author more strongly suggests, a consequence of the maxim "people are policy" and Bush's failure to appoint people willing to enact the government's policies in necessary positions. The book is rather strident though and the author does not come off as completely objective. His lionizing of certain figures goes perhaps too far, and his assignment of blame for all mistakes goes to his "shadow warriors" instead of what would seem to be a more accurate division. The conduct of the shadow warriors he convincingly shows is disgusting, harmful, and possibly traitorous. I would venture that there have been other mistakes made by non shadow warriors which need to be recognized. From reading about the history of the middle east it seems apparent that it is a place that has never really experienced true political freedom and that there is a good possibility that attempting to bring it to Iraq for a start is not a Utopian daydream but a pragmatic attempt to fight terrorism at its roots, and prioritizes our resources versus confronting North Korea for example. The author does show how strong the links were between Iraq and terrorism, despite Iraq's "secular" government, and also the extent of Iraqi WMD efforts, a confluence which was the highest threat to America at the time and one which has actually been largely diffused. From looking at the history of places and events such as East vs. West Germany, North vs. South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, the development of Japan in the Meiji period and US occupation after the War, and the Marshall plan however it seems that political freedom has to come after establishing security first, then economic freedom and development, and although these things are all linked and tend to reinforce each other there is a stronger one way causality between them. In Iraq it would appear that those who have championed and conducted the invasion have gotten it backwards. This backwards development can lead to generally the situation you find in India and Latin and South America. The major distinguishing factor of the Middle East however is the influence of Islam. Islam is truly a unique religion in its complete intertwining of theological, political, cultural, personal, etc. It is in effect a totalitarian religion. So while most of the world clearly shows that political freedom and capitalism are within the confines of human nature and generally lead to high degrees of development and stability, can Islam find a culturally suitable formulation of political freedom and development which will stem the impetus for Islamic terrorism's vision of a resurgent and powerful Caliphate which can be mesmerizing to those who feel downtrodden and powerless? Having had intimate dealings with CIA many years ago, I'm not surprised at the allegations Timmerman makes. I find them wholly believable, but one still has to be shocked at the extent of the machinations by most of the senior leadership of CIA. I kept asking myself while reading, "Why doesn't Bush clean house?" He could terminate or at least reassign these saboteurs. I am puzzled by his lack of forcefulness.

a truly amazing and well researched book. lots of great insight, but what troubles me the most is the outright insubordination and deceptive acts of this guy Negroponte. the "harmony" data is the key to the real reasons why the WMD went missing. yet, he suppresses the effort. thank goodness for people like ken timmerman and stephen hayes. a great, great book. if only ryan crocker, petreus and odierno were in charge, our soldiers and thousands of iraqis would be alive today. george casey and sanchez set us back 3 years and for that i can never forgive them

I was totally against the invasion of Iraq. I haven't changed my mind about the wisdom of it. However, Ken Timmerman has revealed the most hideous examples of betrayal I have ever seen. As a former military officer, I am used to voicing my opinions about a coming decision, but after the proper authority has made a decision, and it is a legal one, I believe that it is my sworn duty to make it work for the best advantage of the United States. That "colleagues" in DoD, CIA, and State would subvert such decisions by the President is unbelievable. As I read "Shadow Warriors," I keep asking myself if Timmerman is fabricating his data; but I have to conclude that he isn't. I believe that, if the career managers within those three major government organizations had worked toward making the Iraqi invasion and governmental change work, we would be out of Iraq today. We must lay the deaths of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis at the feet of these "shadow warriors." Shame on them.

The material of this book is important to develop an understanding of U.S. politics and the disfunction of U.S. intelligence agencies. But, the author treats this fascinating subject in a biased way compounding ad hominem attacks, distortions, and contradictions. By doing so, he impairs his credibility.
The author's thesis is indeed fascinating. According to his investigation the CIA, Democrats in Congress, UN arms inspectors, nuclear watchdog agencies, and the Media formed an alliance to sabotage Bush war on terrorism. Timmerman's well supported investigation is convincing. He calls the members of this alliance the "Shadow Warriors." The CIA has routinely underestimated the danger represented by Saddam Hussein by undermining the uncovering of any WMDs, or contacts with terrorists networks. Meanwhile, there is an abundance of evidence suggesting otherwise. See the excellent chapter 17 on the subject. The CIA, the Media, and Democrats in Congress have frequently leaked information to jeopardize the White House effort in Iraq. CIA middle managers have blocked funds earmarked for reconstructing Iraq. Leaks have multiplied to compromise officials who attempted to reform the CIA or supported the President in his mission in Iraq. The nuclear watchdog agencies have blindfolded themselves not to find any evidence of WMD in Iraq or Iran. If the author had stopped there, this book could be sensational. Unfortunately, he did not and crossed the line on many counts that rendered the book mediocre. His ad hominem attacks or uncalled character adulations are unprofessional. He describes neo-cons as "geniuses" and their liberal adversaries as belonging to "Foggy Bottom." Just as one example among many quoting the author describing a former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense that he adulates: "... [he] was not just brilliant: he was a dedicated neo-con, a man who believed in the freedom agenda." At one point to contrast the position of the Shadow Warriors vs the Administration, he states: "It was the forces of dictatorship and the status quo vs the president's freedom agenda..." That's over the top stuff you read on nearly every page. The author frequently supports arguments that are bankrupt. He admiringly states that Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Bush never considered occupying Iraq. They considered only liberating Iraq by taking Saddam Hussein out and leaving soon after. He then goes on a character assassination of Paul Bremer that he holds fully responsible for turning a liberation into an occupation. He quotes Bremer stating that Iraq is not ready for democracy because it does not have the needed social and political infrastructure to support it. Bremer was right. To study this issue further I strongly recommend The Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad. But, Timmerman takes the following spin on Bremer's statement: "Bremer was determined to bring a crashing halt to the march towards democracy." To hear out Bremer's side, I recommend reading his book: My Year in Iraq: The Struggle to Build a Future of Hope. Soon after, Timmerman criticizes Bremer for everything that has gone wrong in Iraq including the civil war, the insurgencies and sectarian violence. If not for Bremer, Iraq would have long been liberated, he thinks. He quotes a journalist from the New York Post in 2003: "The intensity of the population's pro-American enthusiasm is astonishing, even to an early believer in the liberation of Iraq." The validity of this statement is questionable. So, is blaming Bremer for everything. The greatest mistake was the utopian vision that Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Bush had that they were truly "liberating" Iraq. Yet, that's a utopian vision Timmerman supports. This left the U.S. unprepared for the very complex invasion aftermath. The author attacks others who are more credible than he is. He attacks Richard A. Clarke, former National Security Council Official, for accusing the Bush administration for not taking Al Quaeda seriously before 9/11 in his book: Against All Enemies: Inside America's War on Terror. He later attacks Bob Woodward's State of Denial: Bush at War, Part III for blaming Rumsfeld for the fiasco in the aftermath of the Iraq war. Woodward stated that Rumsfeld kept misinforming us on the apparent progress Iraq was making after the invasion. Meanwhile, Iraq was falling into sectarian civil warfare. In those cases, Clarke and Woodward are on pretty solid ground and Timmerman is not. The author also attacks the CIA nearly obsessively on every other pages. Often, he discloses the glaring disfunction of this organization. But, he occasionally makes weak arguments against it. One of them is that the CIA considers that terrorism should be countered by promoting cooperation with foreign and international intelligence agencies instead of waging wars with sovereign countries. That's exactly the point that Wesley Clark made in his credible book:Winning Modern Wars: Iraq, Terrorism, and the American Empire. Meanwhile, for Timmerman this opinion is another excuse for attacking the CIA. On another page, he attacks the CIA again for stating in a document that invading Iraq would cause the emergence of insurgencies and sectarian violence. In this case, the CIA was right on the money. In the same document, the CIA indicates that ex-regime elements could forge an alliance with existing terrorist organizations to wage guerilla warfare against the new government and coalition forces. Well, this was prescient and accurate. But, the author puts the following spin on it: "The message ... was clear: don't blame us, blame Bush." The author distorts what people he disagrees with are saying. He attacks James Baker and Lee Hamilton, coauthors of the The Iraq Study Group Report: The Way Forward -- A New Approach by stating that they assign all the blame on the Jews regarding why the Iraqi Shiites and Iraqi Sunnis are killing each other. This is an egregious statement as they never said anything like it. Instead, they suggested that to stabilize Iraq, the U.S. should engage a dialogue with Syria, Jordan, and Iran. And, to reestablish credibility with those countries the U.S. should revive the peace negotiation process between Israel and the Palestinians. So, when reading this book you have to watch out for Timmerman's distortions. If you want to read a Timmerman book that is far better than this one on a related subject, I recommend The French Betrayal of America. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-04 04:20:51 EST)

The paraphrase of Daniel Moynihan's "you may have your own opinion but you may not have your own set of facts," will prove very useful to the reader. A troubling aspect of this book is how so much of what the author claims could have gotten by the supposedly loyal Bush appointees of Powell, Rice and Rumsfeld. While the book tends to lean towards those who favor conspiracy theories it does provide pertinent facts in the documentation. Conclusions and quotations reached on interviews, is certainly questionable as the author points out page after page of people lying when questioned and especially how their public comments were markedly different from their sworn testimony; especially those of, Drumheller and Wilson. Ample statements indicate that Iraq had chemical and biological weapons prior to March '03 (In December '02, UN Inspectors stated that Iraq had produced 8,000 liters of anthrax but were unable to account for their location) and that caches of anthrax and sarin gas were moved to Syria by plane and truck. This movement is by stated eyewitness accounts and therefore in the question of fact or opinion. An interesting connection is the Jordanian thwarted terrorist attack that netted a cache of chemical weapons (Sarin gas) from Syria. That the two are connected is fact or opinion?
The author raises the point that the Iraqi army dissolved itself, that the commanders of the Iraqi army told their soldiers to change into civilian clothes and go home, despite the repeated warnings broadcast in Arabic that requested the Iraqi soldiers to lay down their arms, remain in uniform and stay in place. Hmm, lemme see, if an army is taking over my country do I want to look like a soldier or a civilian? Throughout the book you realize that so much of what took place in the first year of the Bush presidency was in place long before he took office. The failure of prior administrations to deal with a mounting terrorist threat is the most damaging. Clearly during the Clinton administration the Al Qaeda threat became known and this was certainly the case made in the Clarke book. However, an omission in the Clarke book is that for the first eight months of the Bush administration key appointments to the depts. of defense, state, etc., were being stalled by congress. Therefore how could the Bush administration have been better prepared for 9/11 when the infrastructure supporting the President were mostly past administration holdovers until congress could approve his new nominees? This may leave you angry or baffled. You may find yourself thinking that an influential portion of our government is more interested in keeping their jobs than serving the people. Partisan smears as brazen as this have been long absent from the American scene. Now, journalist Timmerman breaks new wind in this latest attempt at sensation-mongering hysteria. Since the "Iran nuclear program" has now been revealed as more fizzling sensationalism, one wonders how long the Pulitzer Committee will let him keep his prize.
Here we're offered more dubious details and more spin than a carnival whirligig. "The Party of Treason" - a swipe at the Democratic Party not heard for fifty years - and a "conspiracy of traitors" within the U.S. Government have colluded to bring down Our Beloved Leader and his Jihad for America. While reading this put on the theme from "The Twilight Zone" as background music. And he even names names! Wow, maybe he can be the next chairman of a revived Un-American Activites Committee! America needs another good witch hunt, eh? And here's the stake to burn 'em on. Pardon me while I yawn. . . . (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-13 15:57:39 EST)

The author obviously has contacts within the CIA to be able to analyze their actions as he does. Very telling of how our own intelligence agency is against our President, and doing all they can to undermine him. Unfortunately, it also bodes ill for our country. If they will do this to one President they will also undermine another they do not like, and it is only to our country's detriment. A good read, and a must read for anyone who cares about this country.

Timmerman echoes John Bolton's experience as The United State's Ambassador to the UN. Liberal self aggrandizing bureaucrats work for their own political gains, and no longer promote the ideals of the United State's elected Commander in Chief. If you think we live in a democratic republic that promotes and enforces the will of the people via their elected officials, you must read this book. The need for change is dramatically illustrated by Timmerman's excellent knowledge, research and writing style.
Civil Service takes on new meaning after investigating the influence of political infighting, and blatant disregard for the will and safeguarding of America by the weight of liberal Civil servant's on the government payrolls. In todays political times, they pay homage to their party and ideals, not the will of the majority. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-13 09:45:16 EST)

America's CIA and state department are probably two sad place where some elements try hard to undermine the US foreign policy and president Bush. An actual troubling book. Combine this with the recent book by ambassador Bolton and you'll see how career diplomats have tried hard to ruin the reputation of the US around the world by playing politics. Highly recommended.

Kenneth Timmerman reports on those in the government who hide behind reporters or leak classified documents or simply lie about matters related to the Jihadists to attack the Bush Administration they hate so much. Timmerman shows us how Karen Kwiatkowski spun a bunch of lies about conspiracies in the Rumsfeld bureaucracy that were picked up as fact and used by Carl Levin to attack Rumsfeld and through him, Bush.
We also get a detailed look at what really happened in Niger, Valerie and Joe Wilson, and why those forged documents were actually quite meaningless to the reality of what happened there in Iraq except as a public relations tool on behalf of the anti-war crowd. The author also shows us how the private agendas of many in the State Department, CIA, and other intelligence agencies have caused them to justify breaking their oaths, leaking classified documents, and actively undermining the efforts of the administration. This is one of the serious side effects of the permanent bureaucracy. We are now locked in a state of permanent warfare within the government where people feel free to do their politics leads them to do rather than what they job and duties require them to do. Timmerman shows us what was done to Chalabi, provides evidence about what really happened to the Iraqi WMD (sent to Syria and other places), how the "Bush Lied People Died" movement got started and how it functions, how Porter Goss and John Bolton were attacked and undermined, and much more. The appendix provides a series of documents that are referred to in the text. While the writing is a big breathless and heated than I would personally prefer, I think this book is an important balance to the stuff the mainstream liberal media has been putting out because it exposes their agenda and what they are willing to do to further it without regard for the truth. The author shows that they hold their political aims to be so important that distorting the facts or even promoting outright lies seems justified to them. You know, their all important ends justify any means to further them. Reading this book will help you see the media, the use of leaks and unnamed sources, and Congressional hearings in an interesting new light. Ron Marlar (a retired USAF officer, college professor, school teacher, living currently in Florida)
Retired Air Force Lt Col Robert Patterson painted in War Crimes (New York: Crown Forum, 2007) a broad picture of the perfidy of liberals and Democrats doing anything in their struggle for power and control. Patterson named some names and identified some groups in "the left's campaign to destroy our military and lose the war on terror." In Shadow Warriors, Kenneth Timmerman (New York: Crown Forum, 2007) gets deeper into the nitty gritty details. He names many more and identifies many more groups. Timmerman lays out his case in the prologue to his well-researched, heavily-documented expose of the guilty parties. Then he fills in the details largely with anecdotal evidence from interviews with those involved, those hurt and the damage that the actions and words of the guilty have caused and will continue to cause to the rest of us, the nation as a whole. Entrenched bureaucrats, he reports, principally in the State Department, CIA and other government agencies have acted and continue to act in loyalty to liberal Democrat causes and agendas, showing little to no loyalty to the United States or our Constitution. Timmerman offers a book appealing to many diverse readers and groups. I enjoyed it as a retired military officer with the bulk of my lifetime so far devoted to national defense and international relations; also as a college professor and school teacher. The book is one for professors, teachers, political scientists, intelligence and police officers, patriots, and others concerned about the future of the US in a most troubled world. Liberal Democrats might even like Timmerman's book although it exposes them at their worst and most base. Timmerman does reveal the real mistakes of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and others of Bush's cabinet members and staff. If you have been wondering about such simple and much more complex questions as the following, this is a book for you: What happened to United Press International? Why do we now have only one national press agency - the Associated Press - in the US? Who really wields the power in our nation's capitol? What are the connections by marriage within our government, the media, intelligence and police agencies? What really happened in the battles against Islamic jihadists in Afghanistan and Iraq as part of their total war on the world? How did our quick victories there turn wrong, so wrong in Iraq? How did the insurgency start? What really was and is the basis for WMDs in Iraq, Saddam Hussein's support of terrorists as justification for fighting in Iraq? How is it that we have had unprecedented in their numbers and seriousness leaks of vital national secrets to the media? There are answers in Timmerman's book to these questions and much more for any who are not so blinded by bias, prejudice, political motivations, and even cowardice not to read and heed his reports. The more includes details of the Plame/Wilson fiasco, "extraordinary rendition," outing of real spies by their coworkers and the base treachery of US Senators and Congressmembers in violation of their oaths of office. This is a great read!! You have to "concentrate" to understand the power struggle that continues to revolve in the clandestine world of politics and the names of those who will do anything to achieve their purpose. Unfortunately, this book reveals the fact that elections don't always count and those who "hate" this country will do anything to manuever situations and achieve their ultimate purpose, which is the defeat of the Conservative attitude of US citizens. By using underhanded methods, they try to shape the world opinion negatively towards our country in the back rooms of politics. The devious hatred of those who lost control of the Congress in 1994, & the 2000 & 2004 Presidency, continue to thrive and undermine what George W. Bush has tried to achieve. Do we, as Conservatives have the tenacity and endurance to continue a battle that we know will last into the years to come, or will we go down in defeat because of our lack of drive and "interest." After all, our lives are filled with schedules and other "important" things. Just remember George W. Bush and his speech at the WTC with the bullhorn "We will never forget." And that has to be our ultimate thought and purpose....we did not start this battle, but for our children....we have to WIN!!!!!

With astonishing chutzpah, Timmerman ignores the irony of calling other Americans traitors for not putting the interests of Israel above the interests of their own country. Like other neocons, he also ignores the circular reasoning propping up his philippic: America panders to the Israelis because their Arab enemies are its enemies; their Arab enemies are its enemies because it massively panders to Israel. What we have here is more reckless innuendo in support of the propaganda that it is not acts such as the ongoing dispossession of Arab land by Jewish immigrants from abroad that has provoked folks in the Middle East, but old-fashioned anti-Semitism fueled by conspiracy theories such as the notorious "Protocols of the Elders of Zion."
Rather than read his nonsense, one would get a better idea of how we got dragged into the Middle East morass by reading Mearsheimer and Walt's "Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy." Unlike Timmerman, the two distinguished professors look at the issue with a dispassionate academic rigor, unburdened by the conflicting loyalties shaping Timmerman's attempt to prop up the narrow interests of another country with American blood and treasure. The information in this book is infuriating. Of course many of us watched, know ing what was happening, but now Timmerman has put it all down in black and white, and documented every word.
This has to change. These people have to go. They are protected by elected officials who can be voted out of office. Now read John Bolton's book and see what State did behind our backs. They have totally sabotaged American foreign policy WRT Iran, from start to finish. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-02 15:17:10 EST)

For all the talk about how Fox News, talk radio & the blogoshere have levelled the playing field, this book illustrates how far from reality that is. The book documents conclusively the extent of WMD in Iraq in numerous examples. 740 tons of plastic explosives were not WMD!?! One pound can blow up an airliner & Iraq ships it all off to Russia. Sarin gas warheads are found in Iraq in underground facilities and by Jordan in a failed attack and it was proven that they came from Iraq. Proof positive of evacuation of WMD to Syria is given. Considerable evidence of nuclear ambitions have been found. But if the NY Times doesn't report then it must not have happened. Just how logical is it that Hussein had no WMD, could prove he didn't but just didn't feel he should have to bother to support his case. So then he was willing to crawl in a spiderhole for 22 hours a day because he really shouldn't have to bother with proving anything! The book shows over and over how the MSM are lemmings following blindly the orders of the Party of Surrender. It's like the MSM can make anything they want to be reality, no matter how it obviously it flies in face of the truth. Then there is PlameGate, the most inconsequential event ever that got 4 trillion pages of press coverage. I encourage the liberal left to cancel your Times & Newsweek subscriptions & turn off network news- it will raise your IQ 50 points. And please read books like these and learn the truth.

Interesting book. A little too heavy on the use of conservative talk radio vocabulary(And I'm very conservative). Could have been even more credible if this was moderated. From following current events and analyzing information from various sources I already knew that our intelligence failures were due to insubordinate partisan government employees. Interesting how the press now dismisses the Porter Goss era as a period of mean-spirited, ideological "purging" of the CIA, when in fact most administrations conduct this type of reorganization at the beginning of the term. Shows you what trying to get along will get you. Let it be a lesson to future Republican administrations, don't lay with the lions. Book connects the dots, naming officials who were involved. Conclusions reached are logical. If you come at this argument from the left side you will not agree with this book and dismiss it as paranoia. Of course, logic probably never matters much to you anyway. Don't reference my review in your review, review the book. I'll be busy working and being happy, not reading reviews about a book I've already read, so you won't hurt my feelings. But Conservatives don't have feelings anyway, right?

The democrats are willing to commit treason to the extent of risking a major terrorist attack involving nuclear weapons. Truly, their lust for power, and complete lack of morality knows no limits. Unfortunately for us all, Bush is a weak man, who is unwilling to deal with these people ruthlessly. Instead, he seeks to appease them. And they despise him for it.

This book contains details about people, dates, and events, complete with thoroughly documented references, that will unfortunately never be given the attention they deserve in our press and broadcast media. It is a most frustrating acknowledgement of how disfunctional our governmental agencies really are, at a time when our nation desperately needs people in the State Department, Defense Department, and CIA who actually have our country's best interests at heart.
I would recommend it to anyone who wants clear facts to inform their opinions. Please advertise this book as widely as you possibly can. It could help save lives by preventing horrible blunders in policy-making, and it certainly belongs in the discussions leading to our forthcoming elections. Because the information in this book likely will cause your blood to boil. People I used to consider fine public servants no longer fit that description, e.g., Negroponte, Hadley, McClaughlin. Reinforcing my conviction that they were anti-Bush-the-country-be-damned were: Senators Levin, Rockefeller, and Hagel. Hope that Timmerman gets tv/radio time to bring these shadow warriors to the public's attention.

My Friends,
This is a fundamentally disturbing yet necessary book for anyone interested in foreign policy and security issues. It is an exceptionally well researched and pointed book that illustrates severe problems within our intelligence communicy and within the body politic. Want to know where the WMD went, read this book which reinforces the assertions and information available in Yossef Bodansski's "Secret History of the Iraq War". Want to understand why so many critical leaks of secret American programs occured, read this book. Mr. Timmerman, once again, does a major service to us all by exposing the weaknesses in our intelligence community and, unfortunatly, in the congressional oversight that is supposed to take America's security as it's first priority and does not. With this book you learn how some federal employees of varying ranks took it upon themselves to discredit Bush, and the war of liberating Iraq.
It was horrifying to learn how our nation and its war on terrorism was subverted by calculated leaks to the press about secret procedures designed to flush out those who mean to do the the USA a great deal of harm. You will also learn once and for all the REAL STORY about the WMDs. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-06 20:39:29 EST)

I will keep this short and simple.
First, a disclaimer: I have reviewed a Timmerman book (Honor Killing), he has appeared many times on my radio talk show and he is a friend. Now, as to Timmerman and Shadow Warriors: Timmerman, I have found, knows more and has more and better sources than just about anyone in certain areas that include how our government really works, especially our foreign policy, and how Iran really works. Buy and read Shadow Warriors. You will learn how what has happened in our country over the recent years came about. You will be astounded while you are being educated. You will gain an insight on how your news sources really don't work for you. Finally, buy everything Timmerman writes or has written, and subscribe to his internet reporting. If you do these things, you will, if you take the time, thank me for putting you onto this track, and you will, more importantly, feel profound gratitude toward Kenneth Timmerman. This is all the truth, and nothing but. Julian Tepper (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-11-26 20:35:25 EST)

A must read for anyone interested in U.S. national security. Kenneth Timmerman has accomplished what few "outsiders" -- people who have not worked in government -- have done: written a definitive account of the internal workings of the U.S. national security apparatus. His account is not just limited to the State Department. It also includes inside accounts of developments within the CIA as well as many complex foreign developments. The story Timmerman tells is depressing. He describes how government bureaucrats took steps again and again to sabotage Bush Administration foreign policy initiatives. Timmerman portrays many government bureaucrats as a shadowy permanent and unaccountable government pursuing their own foreign policy. This did not just go on at the Department of State, which is fairly well known for having a strong political bias but also at the CIA. Timmerman discusses what really went on with CIA Director Porter Goss and the extensive efforts CIA careerists took to prevent him from reforming the Agency by smearing him and his staff. Timmerman is careful to point out that this effort would not have succeeded if Goss had the full backing of then National Security Adviser Rice. Unfortunately, Rice did not want any bad press coming out of Langley. Timmerman also gives a very good account of the 2005 Senate battle to confirm John Bolton as UN ambassador. Timmerman reaches deep down and discusses not just actions by CIA and State Department officers to derail Bolton but how this battle was affected by the fact that many of these officials laregly opposed Bolton because they objected to his criticism of Fidel Castro and concerns Bolton raised about Ana Belen Montes, a former DIA Cuba expert who was convicted of spying for Cuba. This well-argued account puts the Bolton confirmation battle in a very different light. As we approach the end of the Bush Administration, it is time to take stock of its accomplishments and failings. Kenneth Timmerman reveals some of the internal obstacles that had a significant impact on the ability of Bush officials to carry out their policies. This is a serious problem that the next president must be prepared to address. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-11-26 20:35:25 EST)

Shadow Warriors: The Untold Story of Traitors, Saboteurs, and the Party of Surrender
I began this book with a skeptical viewpoint since conspiracy theories are running rampant these days. The book takes the reader through the history of the Iraq conflict and other Foriegn policy issues over the 6 years of the Bush administration, and explains in detail how these policies were systematically derailed, and the reporting in the news media distorted by U.S. civil servants in concert with the congress and the elite news media that disagreed with these policies. I believe what is reported here is not a conspiracy theory, and is actually a truthful report for several reasons. 1. The claims made in the book are supported by many pages of documents and footnotes. I checked several of these footnotes and found them to be fully credible. For example, the 20,000 lbs of sarin nerve agent (Bush Lied, People Died!) that was captured in Jordan from Al Quaeda who planned to explode it in downtown Amman was found to originated in Iraq, and was smuggled to Syria just prior to the war. This actually happened, and even worse, was not reported by the US press. 2. The book is written with a clear logical style and language, and does not descend into the screed style at any point, as is common among most conspiracy theorists. 3. The book is full of the names of various Shadow Warriors (SWs), including middle initials, their department, boss's name, etc, so there is no doubt whatsoever who these people are that he is writing about. Conspiracy theorists are usually not stupid enough to slander people in high places. A reporter of Timmerman's stature is surely not that stupid either. Some of the SWs he cites and discredits, such as Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson, have already made a fortune through lawsuits and their pompous indignation. It will be interesting to see which characters from this book want to go to the legal mat with Timmerman. 4. I personally know some relatively low-level government workers who harbor a visceral hatred of Bush. Their attitude is that they have no responsibility to support his administration, even though he was elected by a majority of americans. If these people were able to damage this administration by their actions or inaction they would do it. For this reason the SW syndrome seems realistic to me. I recommend this book to everyone who is interested in understanding historical detail. It opened my eyes to an account of recent history that is radically different from what I read in the newspapers or heard on NPR. It makes me a little angry too. I am not one to take conspiracy theories seriously. I began this book as a skeptic. After about 100 pages, I was a believer. I have read a lot about Iraq and Afghanistan. I read Bob Baer's first book (See No Evil) and Gary Berntsen's book (Jawbreaker), both about Afghanistan. Bob Baer was there when Chalabi's planned revolt against Saddam was cancelled by Clinton NSC chief Anthony Lake. Timmerman's book agrees with other books on similar topics. His thesis is that the permanent bureaucracy is anti-Bush and has used its influence to thwart his policies at every chance. Some of us were puzzled about the fanatical pursuit of the alleged leaker of Valerie Plame's identity while Sandy Berger committed theft and violated multiple laws about secrecy and got a slap on the wrist. Timmerman explains that the two Justice Department staffers responsible are Clinton holdovers with an agenda.
This is not a new phenomenon. Ronald Reagan faced the same resistence within the bureaucracy to his initiatives. The difference is that Reagan was a better communicator and could go over the heads of his opponents to the people. Bush has lacked this ablity and has been strangely passive at times as his policies are reversed by mid-level bureaucrats. The story of the Iraq occupation is still incomplete. General Jay Garner had a good record as an administrator with the Kurds during the time we protected them from Saddam. When he entered Baghdad to take over the transition team, he seemed the perfect choice. A few months later, he was gone and I have yet to hear an adequate explanation of what happened. Timmerman may have the answer. The State Department thought the idea of Iraqi democracy was foolish and Paul Bremer arrived with a few CIA candidate dictators in his pocket. The Iraqi National Congress that had been led by Ahmed Chalabi during the Clinton years, was summarily dismissed and Bremer began his role as Viceroy. The insurgency soon followed. Cause and effect ? I'm not sure but Timmerman makes a reasonable case it is. I'm not sure this book is the last word but it should be on every reading list of those who want to know what happened. Kenneth Timmerman is one of our era's greatest journalists. Radio talk show host Michael Medved warned that his new Shadow Warriors may get one's blood boiling. He was not even slightly exaggerating. This somewhat frightening book goes into great detail to reveal the betrayal of "elites" who attended our so-called best universities. They are snobs who believe they have the self appointed right to defy our democratic institutions if these entities fail to perform to their expectations. Most are members of the Democratic Party and a small handful are left-wing Republicans. The author cites former Senator Zell Miller's warning "that the CIA was becoming a `domestic dirty tricks shop' that allowed its own operatives to conduct a covert operation `to destabilize a U.S. president.'" This leftist cabal of CIA officers is literally endangering our lives with their traitorous behavior. These saboteurs must be stopped.
One should also not ignore the not so subtle anti-Semitism of these CIA traitors. Timmerman exposes the stabbing in the back of Larry Franklin. When everything is said and done, these scoundrels believe that Israel is the central reason behind the rage of the Islamic nihilists. They haven't the foggiest notion of what truly motivates our deadly foes. The scholarly writings of Bernard Lewis (ie. What Went Wrong?: The Clash Between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East), sadly, are not held in high esteem within their cultural milieu. Shadows Warriors is a book you must read as quickly as possible. The time is getting late. The damage already done has been extensive. We cannot allow it to continue. Just when you thought George W. Bush and his political appointees where the ones creating havoc, enter the career bureaucrats of the State Department and the CIA, who, no matter who's residing in the White House, have their own agendas in mind.
This book will hopefully enlighten Americans as to who really holds the power within the federal bureaucracy. It's not political appointees - it's the unelected staffers who populate the buildings up and down Pennsylvania Avenue and show up to work just enough to earn their step increases in the GS pay scale. The rest of the time, well - Mr. Timmerman discusses how partisan staff members within the CIA and State Department waged a war of their own on the Administration to discredit it in the public's eye. For those of you who loathe Bush over Iraq, you may have been had by one of the greatest disinformation campaigns of all time. At least be open-minded and give this well-written book a chance. If you don't believe it, or want to believe, at worst you've got a gripping story in your hands as good as "Seven Days In May" or any of the better Clancy novels.
