September 12th: We Knew We Would Be All Right

On September 11th horrific events occurred, yet through the simple text and vibrant art of first graders, we are reminded that the world continued the next day. On each page, children experience the comforts of ordinary routines, such as their teacher reading books to them, having homework and recess, and knowing that 2 + 2 still equals 4. This is a poignant message of hope that reassures us all that even after bad things happen, tomorrow always brings a new day.

I teach 2nd grade, and I use this book every year on September 11th. This book DOES NOT imply that 9/11 wasn't a big deal to those who weren't located in NYC. This book helps children realize that even though terrible and scary things sometimes happen, life truly does go on after a time. It is a wonderful tool for teaching small children about the tragic events of 9/11/01 without scaring them to death. Anyone who thinks otherwise obviously has not read the book.

Book was actually in fair to poor condition. Definately not good- but the price was right so I can't complain.

I heard this book read to sixty fifth graders on September 11, 2008. The students in my school were affected by the book and it sparked many conversations. These students were only two or three on that horrible day but after hearing this book and the following discussions, I am sure they will never forget what they learned. A wonderful book to share after any event that changes our lives because we must remember that there is always a day after.

I am a Kindergarten teacher, and I use this book each year to teach my students about the history of September 11th. It is a way for them to be aware of the events, without it being scary to them. Since first graders are the authors, the text is suitable for children. My students love the fact that first graders drew the pictures and wrote the story. It sends the message that no matter how bad things get, everything will be all right in the end.

This book does two things...it allows the young child to know what happened on September 11, 2001 and it gives that child comfort in knowing that everything will be all right. This book, is a book worthy of reading aloud to children who question what September 11 is aboutor asks the question of why is there so much news coverage on this particular day...if you are a parent or teacher looking for the right words, then let this book speak for you...it was written by a group of first graders and I appauld them for doing a great job. Although I don't like to bring up the day to young children and wouldn't but when they turn 10 and start asking questions about this day and the events surrounding it then; I think this book is great to answer those questions without too many gory details.

I am currently in the process of becoming a teacher... I will be student teaching in the Spring. The week of September 11th this year, one of my teachers read this book to all of us in one of my education classes. All 26 people in my class fell in love with this book, and we were all greatly disappointed to find out that the book is no longer being published. And I was horrified at the prices that the used books are being sold at. This is a wonderful book with a great message, and it too bad that you cannot get it at a reasonable price anymore.

I have to offer a rebuttal for the last review I saw entitled "Teaching Self-centeredness". Obviously, our lives did not magically become ok on September 12, 2001. I don't believe that it was this book's intention to imply that. This book provided a much needed message of hope and healing for both children and adults. The book can be used to guide a discussion about the events of September 11th, the loss that was felt, and how our country pulled together for healing and recovery. All Americans were affected in some way that day. This is a wonderful book to use with children. My first graders had very thoughtful, heartfelt responses to this book.

It is my sincere hope that no one will read this book to their child or to their class since it is such an affront to the idea of America as one country. I am glad that those children were safe on September 12, but in reality, in New York, people were still looking for their loved ones, rubble was still smoldering and many families had not even begun to know how to continue. The lesson of "because it didn't happen to me the world is okay" is not the lesson I want my child to learn. Would the publisher even dream of selling a post-Katrina book called "August 31 - Our House Didn't Get Flooded So We Knew We Would Be All Right"? Of course not.

This book is so heart warming. I purchased it for my classroom and I feel it will be a wonderful addition to help children understand that they are still safe and ok here at school and in America. Seeing this perspective through children's eyes is truely refreshing.

SEPTEMBER 12TH was written and illustrated by children in a first-grade class. The book is filled with hope and displays that even though none of us will ever be the same since September 11th, we did and will press forward to continue living our lives, perhaps cherishing what we did not consider valuable before. The book is very poignant and some find it amazing that it was written by a class of first-graders. I don't find that so amazing as I do that these young children seem to be more at peace with the world and all that went on than most adults do. I find it hard to believe that the kids who wrote this book are afraid to fly in planes or travel overseas because of what happened on September 11th. I think this book illustrates that the future of our country will be in good hands. I highly recommend this book not only to children, but to anyone who still faces anxiety as a result of September 11th. Read this book, take comfort, and let yourself be led to peace by a child.

This book is incredible. I am excited to see that children made this book as a comforting tool for other children. If you have a child that is terrified about the September 11th events, this book is a must. Every time that I feel anxious about the "war on terrorism" I read this book, and it provides me with comfort.

This is a wonderful children's book which explains how we as Americans (especially our children) knew we would be all right after the hideous experience of September 11, 2001.

The emphasis is on the day after and all the days after and I can almost hear our First Lady's voice soothing our children in the aftermath. This story (written and illustrated by children) has a soothing charm that brings tears to your eyes and hope to your heart.

This book is a delight and comfort to read, and the story wouldn't be the same without a child's perspective. September 11th was a day that few will forget, but by reading this book, it lets us all, no matter what age, know that everything will be alright. Every page reveals a way that young children know that everything will be alright.
The illustrations are also done by children, and this gives us an insight into how the younger generation percieves this tragedy. While we know that most children cannot fully understand the ramifications of 9-11, this book helps us to see what they see.
This book is a must for those with small children or those working in an education environment. And while the book is solely done by children for children, we can all learn a little something from this hopeful and delightful read.

This book is a delight and comfort to read. The entire book is written by first graders, and each page tells another reason as to how they knew that everything would be all right after the tragedy of 9-11. Some reasons include "The sun came up" and "2+2 still added up to 4."
The book was also entirely illustrated by the children and the bold, colorful pictures display the hope these young people have. While this tragedy will never be forgotten, by reading this book we can see the innocent view that young children take on this, and it gives readers a hope that can only be had by children.
This book is a must for anyone with small children or anyone working in an education environment. For those children who may not understand quite what went on, this book should comfort all those who read it. This wonderful book should be read by all, no matter what the age!

Taken from a child's perspective, the forgotten voices amidst all the terror from September 11, this is a truly reassuring book. Written and illustrated by children, this wonderful book manages to convey the fact that life is okay- the sun comes up again and life goes on. There are still caring people in this world and everything is going to be good again.
