I bought this book because most of the internet guides are not comprehensive enough to cover specifics addressed in this book. I agree with other users that say this book lists material on the same topic in multiple places, requiring you to waste time checking around for something you think you remember seeing before. The index needs to be re-done, something I hope they fix for the next edition. Electronic resources are very generally addressed.

This is a must have for any MBA or PhD student. The spiral bound edition is far superior to the paperback hardbound as it lays open for reference without needing to place other items on it to keep it open. While APA is a hard to learn, you can find sound examples in this book that when used in conjunction with items from the university provide a sound reference source.

Reviewer Permalink
I use this manual at work, where we print academic journals. The instructions for submitting manuscripts for production are about 10 years out of date. For instance, on page 334 it says to print out the figures in the final ms and then *delete* them from the word processing file! I'm glad authors don't actually do that. I can usually extract an .emf file or at least a .tif from the document. I'd hate to spend all that time scanning figures, although I spend a lot of time extracting the figures and changing the file types and getting rid of extraneous colors.
APA should put out a revision after they poll printers and editors, and suggest a workflow that is, ideally, independent of specific technologies but explains to academics the basics of efficiently getting good printed output.
A section on using Acrobat for commenting might be more helpful than the current illustration of paper-and-pencil proofreading marks.
APA should probably also add a chapter on XML, since these publications are increasingly being submitted to databases in that format.

This is a technical manual that would only be woth the purchase if you really need it. Undergraduate students could likely get by with a quick reference chart (BarCharts, Inc. for example) for a small fraction of the cost and without taking up shelf space or killing several trees. However, if you need it you need it and there is no substitute.

Reviewer Permalink
This is one of my absolute least favorite topics - writing for academic journal publication. Lest I start a rant about the very premise of intellectual information-hoarding, here is the lowdown.

The book is a big, floppy paperback, close to the measurements of a phone directory. It is sometimes hard to focus on the thinner fonts used in some of the sections, complicated by the late hours and crummy light many students will use it in. However, it is fairly quick to access those bits of publishing minutiae needed for one's term paper or article.

That said, I would steer you to a regular style manual if possible, because this is geared for people who *must* adhere to the Psychology Association's demands. It's no good for regular writers who address wide audiences, as it has peculiarities unique to scholarly psychological article making.

Also, get it used, because someone in the know keeps changing said minutiae, causing victims to rush to expensive retailers for the latest version. You may get by just fine with the pocket version ... but find out how strict your professor is!

I would HIGHLY recommend the spiral bound version of this book, even if you need to buy it to use just for one class. When you are looking back and forth from the computer screen to textbooks to this book, it is SO NICE to have it lay flat. No more juggling books. As far as writing APA, not a fan, but thats not what this review is about! Overall easy to find information and relatively easy to use.

I can recommend a remarkably candid and insightful book, That's How the Light Gets In: Memoir of a Psychiatrist by Susan Rako, M.D. The title comes from a song by Leonard Cohen: "There is a crack, a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." Rako's book is wonderfully well written. It also gives more than a glipse into the teachings of her mentor, Dr. Elvin Semrad (and see Semrad: The Heart of a Therapist Both great books!

I cannot disagree more with the negative reviews re: APA style. I have used many diverse editing tools while acquiring a number of degrees, 3 from the College of Arts and Sciences and 3 from the College of Education. The reason that Kate Terabian, Chicago or MLA (all of them heavily used in the Col. of A&S) are slowly being replaced by APA (Coll. of Ed.)is reflective of its (APA) total practicality of use. There are no footnotes nor endnotes to divert the reader from the flow of the paper. Only necessary citations needed to substantiate required verification within the body of the document are used. The other 3 systems, while in use for many generations, may well have outlived their usefullness......turning pages to receive clarification from footnotes and endnotes,(the information from which could more easily have been included within the body of the paper) is a chore. Reference citations are generally the same, so the argument boils down to confusion or simplicity. I opt for simplicity.

I have just completed writing a Master's Thesis for a degree program that required that the Thesis be written in APA format. The layout of the manual is very difficult to use and one has to look in several places with the hope that they will find the right way to format something. The index is helpful but not as helpful as it could be. I hope that a future edition of this manual will provide better and more varied examples that are actually applicable to people who have to use the manual to write papers, theses and dissertations.

I really didn't care for this manual. I am a visual person, so I need to see real example with explainations. I thought it was a waste of money. There are some examples, but not many. Prior to buying this book I used the internet for help in citing and composing APA papers and I find the net just as useful if not more. I don't know the exact address for the website, but its something like apaowl. If you search apa and owl it should come up. I did buy the apa software, but I haven't use it yet. My suggestion is to check apa websites first. I am half way through my masters program and I use the net for help much more than the manual.
