DK Eyewitness Travel guide Prague: We were there a week and this guide was great. It also helped us lable our pictures afterwards. I wanted it as a suvenir of our trip also. For a shorter trip or one where you are going to many other cities I would recomment their top ten guides which are smaller, lighter weight and still have good maps and commentary. We used one of these for Munnich and it was great also.

My husband and I love to travel and found that the DK Eyewitness books are better than Fromers or Fodors. This Prague book was very helpful and made our 5 day stay wonderful (granted, you don't need 5 days in Prague).

(Hide Review...)  Great Guide for Sightseeing
Reviewer Permalink
This is the one guide seen by far the most often in Prague. While it should drop the pretension of providing general information, it is by far the best guide available for getting out and seeing Prague.

Other than wasting space on hotels, my complaints are: 1) It fails to mention admission fees. For example there is a fee to see almost everything in both the Palace and the Jewish Quarter. This becomes obvuious early enough in the Palace but you can wander around most of the Jewish Quarter before realizing that you could simple buy one relatively expensive ticket, 2) It fails to tell where you really should spend your time despite being the best describer of detail - for example it should tell you that they have already largely destroyed what character is left in the Jewish Quarter (Hotel Intercontinental!?) and they are working on destroying the rest, and 3) The maps could be better.

With the Time Out guide for everything else and the Streetwise map this book will equip you well for your Prague visit.

Reviewer Permalink
I went to Prague to visit a friend of mine who has been working/ living there for a year, and WE BOTH learned so much while toting this book. Great detail was given to explaining and describing the significance, history, and factoids of the most popular places in Prague. It was accurate, up to date, interesting, and well written. The maps are easy to use too. I just purchased a new Eye Witness book for my upcoming trip to Munich. This series is one which I will be sticking with!

(Hide Review...)  Why this guide is the best...
Reviewer Permalink
I used this guide on my recent trip to Prague and after numerous trips to the bookstores, I choose this book for the following reasons:

1) Large color pictures. Not only great to look at but helpful in identifying buildings that aren't necessarily labeled or labeled in English.

2) City is divided into sections. MUCH MORE USEFUL when walking around then having attractions listed by type. This just makes planning and improvising much easier.

3) Great walking tours and itineraries for 1-4 day trips.

Other then that this book is on par with the other heavy hitters in the other major travel guide categories. It goes into depth about Czech history, it has adequate explanations of major attractions, good descriptions of local customs, laws and transportation logistics and is just the right size for day packs.

The only minor drawback is the hotel and restaurant descriptions but with the internet, using a guide book for hotel/hostel booking has become obsolete.

Bottom Line: The price is little higher then average but it's worth it.

(Hide Review...)  Buy the Fodor's book
Reviewer Permalink
While this book is better to have than nothing, there are a few things that I did not like. If you are used to Fodor's stick with it. Oftentimes, when we would bump into other tourists to ask directions, they would refer to their Fodor's Prague book, which also has pictures but seemed more comprehensive.

For example:

1. St. Nicholas church (a star attraction and must-see) is really close to Prague Castle and not mentioned in that general area.

2. The Jewish Quarter tour and the New City Tour makes them look like they are so far away from the Old City area and they are all adjacent. Why not see the Spanish Synogague when you see the Old Town area?

3. The restaurants and hotels are not rated like Fodor's rates them.

4. I always use Fodor's restaurant recommendations and it has NEVER gone wrong and they are built into the tours they recommend. Here, you have to just "hope" the restaurant is good and affordable.

I have always used Fodor's but thought I would use Eyewitness because of the pictures (making things easily identifyable). Now Fodor's has pictures and better tours/ratings, etc.

Hope this helps if you are comparing.

(Hide Review...)  A very handy guide -- the only one we needed!
Reviewer Permalink
I recently took a 4 day trip to Prague (6 days, including travel time) and took this guide book along. This book was the only one we needed to have a wonderful time there! This book was in my pocket at all times, and proved invaluable for finding landscapes, museums, etc. Especially handy are the grid-styled maps which help you locate various points of interest. This is true of all DK guide books, but I found myself using the Prague guide more than any other guide book I have owned (and I own 10 or more for destinations all over Europe) The back flap was consistently tucked into the map section which we pulled out of my pocket and referred to frequently while walking around the city.

I would say the weakest link of the DK guides is its lack of "practical info" -- for example, we were completely lost when we got to the train station to try to head to Kutna Hora (about an hour outside of Prague); the trip would have been impossible if a friendly English-speaking Czech local hadn't been nearby and offered to help us out. In addition, the accommodations listings could be a little more extensive, so you may want to research more on the web or other guidebooks at a library for booking a place to stay before you go.

The restaurant guide, on the other hand, was surprisingly good -- the short descriptions managed to get us to places that were right up our alley (for affordable food and drinks in hip, interesting environments, I recommend Radost FX and Klub Arkitektu)

Having lived in the city of Prague twice this is the only book I will ever recommend. The way it is divided up makes more sense than the rest. It gives great information about Prague and into the surrounding area. The recommendations for restaurants are top notch and the security advice it gives is great. Highly recommend if you are taking a trip to this wonderful city.

This book was pretty good, not great. The pictures were good and some of the walking tours were good. If you want the history of a city and specific areas/tourist attractions this is a good book, but if you want restaurant recommendations, store recommendations and "insider" info, this is not the book to buy.

(Hide Review...)  Presenting Prague
Reviewer Permalink
This is the best travel guide I have ever used. Prague is presented in a way that does justice to its beauty and storied past. The richness and detail of the (mostly) color images of the sites being discussed give the guide a usefulness that I have not found in other guides. It is one of the few travel guides that I will keep in my private library long after my recent trip to Prague and the Czech Republic has ended.

Traveling without doing any research is a recipe for sub-par trips and missing many things that you would want to see if only you knew where to look. The problem with most travel guides, though, is that they are great sources of information on hotels, restaurants, and attractions but they have few pictures if any. Yet, when you travel to a city such as Prague, there are many attractions and landmarks that have great visual appeal. How can you possibly select or prioritize among them without seeing pictures of them?

This is where the Eyewitness Travel Guides come in handy. While not comprehensive in covering the details, this guide has photos of many of the landmarks that await you in Prague. The book is an excellent starting point and can definitely help you decide what you want to see while visiting. I highly recommend purchasing it along with a more detailed book such as Frommer's to get a truly comprehensive comination of source material to help you plan your trip. I highly recommend purchasing it along with a book, such as Frommer's, that will delve more deeply into restaurants and hotels to get a truly comprehensive comination of source material to help you plan your trip.

Reviewer Permalink
I recently spent nine days in Prague, including a day and a half of a group tour, and about five full days of touring on my own. I found all of the information in the guide to be accurate and up-to-date, and to be at an appropriate level of depth and detail. I was able to prioritize and choose what I wanted to see, and get to everywhere. The information on public transit (metro and trams) was very helpful. I traveled to and through all the primary areas of interest without any additional maps or guidance. Because I went with a group, the hotel was pre-selected (and not one that was in the guide), so I cannot comment on that aspect of the guide.

Others on our tour (which was a community college jazz band with several parents) had guides by other publishers, which by comparison we all agreed were markedly inferior to this guide.

Overall, this was an excellent guide, and I would definitely select DK's guides for my next trip.

I have traveled the world over, usually I use the lonely plant series. But now that I have used the Eyewitness Travel Guide to Prague I am hooked. This is a fantastic travel guide, you could not ask for anything better. There are clear maps with photos and drawings, so you can find everything. Then for each item it goes into details. For example the charles bridge has a four page spread where is has a drawing of the bridge and then a description about each statue. It is so EASY TO USE, and it has everything you will need. I had this and small map and that was it for a four day trip in Prague. I didn't really need the map as the book has all the maps you need.

Really good for exploring the city's sights, a little dated on some of the more time specific things like restaraunts....and in 2 cases the recommendations were pretty out of whack with reality. Example - a french restaraunt in the Jewish Quarter that's recommended wasn't very good at all and the waiter tried to pad the bill by about 30% (Chez Marcel is the name I think) but other than that the guide was VERY helpful and pretty much on the money, great maps, interesting and accurate descriptions of sights and areas, really helped us a lot!

A quick note, if you're going to Prague in the winter, be aware that it can get VERY cold, we froze our buns in Feb, and that the crowds in summer can render many of the sites almost useless, so spring and late fall may be good bets....having said that the city is incredible and should be on your list for sure.....and they aren't kidding about the Czech traffic cops, be GOOD!!

These books are beautiful and informative and perfect for a pre-trip virtual tour of any city. However, I find them overly complex for actual touring and rely more on Rick Steves for Europe and Lonely Planet or Frommers for everything else. I buy a DK guide to any large city I am headed for and spend many happy hours with them pre and post trip. I would highly recommend you do the same. And since travel guides are as varied as the travelers who use them, you might find these to be the perfect book to carry with you.

The DK books are always very detailed in the maps and cut aways of the main tourist areas. Information and photos of parts of the insides of museums, churches, castles, et al., give good indication of what you will see. We do not use them for the restaurant and lodging information, as other sources (Rick Steves, internet), seem much better. We have purchased DK books for several trips and have been very satisfied.

This guide is very useful to plan a trip, you can learn about
history and geography of St.Petersburg, the weather during the
year, the most importants festivals, you can see photos and
maps of museums, palaces and another atractions.
You can learn about safety, healthcare, currency, food and
lodging.
I've used this kind of guide allways when I travel abroad, but
I think the book is heavy to carry all the time, usually I study
the guide in the hotel before leave to an atraction.
Other problem is that the hotels indicated by the guide usually
are more expensive than hotels I can find in the Internet, but
to plan a trip this is the most wonderful guide, even for students to learn about a country or city is amazing.

A chance acquisition of the Prague Eyewitness Travel Guide has made me a rabid and devoted fan of the entire series. Although many travel guides offer excellent text content in terms of descriptions and reviews (Lonely Planet comes to mind), what makes the Eyewitness series such a standout is its innovative use of (glossy, color) photographs and illustrations. The Eyewitness guides use visual displays to convey information that cannot be easily gleaned otherwise, yet is extremely helpful to the travel experience.

Here are just a few examples, from the Prague guide:

* The illustration of the Charles Bridge identifies each statue by the saint's name; information which is not completely obvious (at least not to non-Czech speakers) when you're standing in front of one.

* Cutaway illustrations of churches, museums, etc. identify rooms, sections, items, etc., making it easy to home in on areas of interest, or to identify otherwise unlabeled features.

* Photographs of the outside of the buildings of reviewed attractions.

* Photographs of paper and coin currency.

* Photographs and explanations of foods and beverages.

* My personal favorite: photographs of automatic metro ticket machines with detailed instructions on how to use them.

Don't miss these exceptional and stunningly beautiful guides.

This book blew my mind. Before departing, it helped excite me about the people, history and art of the Czech Republic. Upon arrival, it served as the most perfect guide to Prague. From exquisite must-do walks to the breakdown and illustration of statues along the Charles Bridge, it covered everything worth seeing in Prague. Because of the precise maps and excellent directions, my friends and I were able to cover historic Prague in 4 days, visiting every site that we wanted to because we had such an excellent device for orienting ourselves. I would highly recommend this book to any traveler who loves to understand the history and artistic intricacies of a region. I plan to buy Eyewitness Travel Guides for all my future adventures.

Just returned from the Czech & Slovak Republics.
