The project that captured a nation's imagination. The instructions were simple, but the results were extraordinary. "You are invited to anonymously contribute a secret to a group art project. Your secret can be a regret, fear, betrayal, desire, confession, or childhood humiliation. Reveal anything -- as long as it is true and you have never shared it with anyone before. Be brief. Be legible. Be creative." It all began with an idea Frank Warren had for a community art project. He began handing out postcards to strangers and leaving them in public places -- asking people to write down a secret they had never told anyone and mail it to him, anonymously. The response was overwhelming. The secrets were both provocative and profound, and the cards themselves were works of art -- carefully and creatively constructed by hand. Addictively compelling, the cards reveal our deepest fears, desires, regrets, and obsessions. Frank calls them "graphic haiku," beautiful, elegant, and small in structure but powerfully emotional. As Frank began posting the cards on his website, PostSecret took on a life of its own, becoming much more than a simple art project. It has grown into a global phenomenon, exposing our individual aspirations, fantasies, and frailties -- our common humanity. Every day dozens of postcards still make their way to Frank, with postmarks from around the world, touching on every aspect of human experience. This extraordinary collection brings together the most powerful, personal, and beautifully intimate secrets Frank Warren has received -- and brilliantly illuminates that human emotions can be unique and universal at the same time. |

I love PostSecret and I love what Frank has done with the project. In a world where people are hated and looked down upon for being different, the website makes you realize that there's others out there just like you. With the same secrets as you. You feel connected to others.
With that said, I think Frank could have done a better job with his first book. I opened it thinking it was going to be full of secrets I haven't seen before but instead it was secrets that had already been posted on the site. 95% of them were repeats for me. For Frank to take something that I already saw for free and try to charge me to read them again I thought was a rip off. I'm glad I read it while sitting in a big comfy chair at Barnes and Noble. Don't buy the book but I urge others to keep visiting the website. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-09-10 00:43:40 EST)

Finally, after having this on my wish list for forever, I finally bought it. This will be a great coffee table book. I loved the post card artwork and the layout of this book. This is more of an art book than a book meant for just revealing secrets. Don't let this deter you from reading it, though. While the words may be few, they can run the gammit of making you laugh out loud, to making you empathize, to making you cry. It's a powerful book. Both the postcard art and words are artwork in themselves. I think it's so interesting, it will be hard for anyone to resist taking it off your coffee table to flip through. I'm glad I bought it. Plus, someone slipped their own admission into the book I purchased, which I thought was pretty cool. (Gasp, I did not buy it from Amazon, although I recommend you do because I paid the full price for it at Barnes and Noble.)

PostSecret allows everyone the ability to put their innermost thoughts and feelings that they may not be able to share with others into written form to share them with the world. The secrets are a mixture of happy, sad, silly, hopeful-every possible emotion much like life. If you read this book expect to feel every emotion possible!

I found this book fantastic on a number of different levels. First, it was artistic...people sending in postcards that were original and/or altered to fit their mood. Second, it was truth...or at least something close to it. People sharing their deepest secrets, expunging their soul and saying what they really think. The collection goes from high drama to low comedy from page to page, and kept me enthralled from dust jacket to dust jacket.

I've been a fan of the PostSecret site for awhile now. It's a project started by Frank Warren back in late 2004 involving blank postcards. He spread them around and asked people to share a secret on the card, decorate it as they saw fit, and then mail it anonymously to him. In short order, the project took on a life of its own, and Warren started receiving cards and letters from around the world. The book PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives is a full-color compilation of some of these mailings, and it's fascinating.
Behind the cover of anonymity, people are willing to 'fess up to numerous things that are dark secrets never before revealed. Going through the book, you see secrets such as "He's been in prison for two years because of what I did. 9 more to go.", "I wish my parents could see me for what I am, instead of what I didn't become.", and "I am contemptuous of others so it hurts less then they are indifferent to me." The words themselves can be funny, haunting, sad, or shocking, but the real impact is the artwork that adorns the cards. It's there that you get the full emotional impact of what the writer is saying. For instance... A "Hello, My name is..." tag with the space filled in as "I force new acquaintances to address me by my shortened name because it makes me forget my past.". Or there's the picture of the wrecked car with the hand-written note "I almost decided not to get out, once I knew I'd hit the river." Not all the items are as dark as what I've noted above. There's "I believe in destiny, and I think I know mine. :) :) :)", "I had a cyst on my face that ruined 7th and 8th grade. Now I love it because it makes me different.", and my favorite (written on a Starbucks cupholder)... "I give decaf to customers who are RUDE to me!" I guess part of the fascination with PostSecret is the lurid stuff that shows up. But it's also a reminder that what you see on the outside of someone is in all likelihood far different than what they see on the inside. It once again reminds me that everyone is struggling with something in their lives. There are other books in the PostSecret series, and I have them on hold at the library. This book was excellent in a thought-provoking way, and I look forward to more. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-30 00:14:33 EST)

"Some of the most beautiful postcards in this collection came from very painful feelings and memories. I believe that each of us has the ability to discover, share, and grow our own dark secrets into something meaningful and beautiful." ~ Frank Warren
There are some things you wouldn't even tell your best friend. Instead, you might consider telling Frank by sending him a creative postcard. What started off as an idea for a community art project has morphed into numerous books. Some of the postcards show a sense of humor, while others show a dark side inspired by people's psychological pain. You may be shocked by some of the vindictive thoughts or even surprised by your own emotional response to the honesty in the messages. Here are a few I can actually include in a review (others are too private to post): "I put coins in other people's parking meters." "I am home-less and no one (not even my family) knows about it." "I give decaf to customers who are rude to me." One thing I know for sure is that some people have given me regular coffee instead of decaf! In this book such a dark side is now revealed. This book is a fairly quick read because most of the postcards have just a few sentences. Most of the postcards are artistic and represent the feelings and moods of the writer. That is what makes so many of them unique. While reading I had thoughts about sending in a postcard with my own secrets. This book is sure to inspire you in such a direction. ~The Rebecca Review (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-25 00:14:06 EST)

I was not aware of the website until I got this book as a birthday gift. It was one of the best birthday gifts I have ever received. The book is amazing. The boldness of some of the messages is astonishing. You can learn here what the REAL world is all about. Some of the messages are funny, some sad, but most of them will make you stop and think about the way we interact with others, what are desires are, etc. I think the reader will often well relate with many of the messages. I definitely encourage everybody to either get the book or at least visit the website. Another great title i recommend is Naked Pictures of Famous People (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-03-17 21:34:26 EST)

I loved this! There is something about peeking in on someone's life. I read it within a day and then my husband, who doesn't read anything, read it in two nights! Now we've passed it on to his family. I will definitely be looking for Warren's other "Secrets".

After reading Warren's second book, I decided to get this one (his first)to see how his project had started. This collection of secrets is a true testament to our vulnerability. As you read it you'll experience many emotions (e.g. sadness, hope, joy). In a way it is cathartic because it somehow makes you take a closer look at your life and examine whether you are truly happy or simply "pretending to be" happy while carrying so much emotional baggage. You'll love it. It's an easy read. You won't be able to put it down. Then you'll go back and read it again. After all, we all have secrets! :)

i found myself only reading post secret books once. see if they are at your library first...okay, no check your used book store...okay now check his website and read all the cards there...okay now realize that exactly what you are paying 20 bucks for in book form i liked the book but then i realized that i just paid a lot of money for a picture book. it's interesting to read other people's secrets of course but ...not worth the cash. it's the EXACT same thing as reading it online on his website. why pay for it if you can see it for free online [on his site]. this applies to all postsecret books... i would think buying the book would add some sort of umph to it but no. The Post-Secret phenomenon is at first strange and awkward. Why would anyone want to post their secrets? However, this sensationalist activity of peering into other peoples lives, becomes and truly beautiful and heart wrenching exercise in empathy. It's absurd at first that one would care about the anonymous letters, but the reader is sucked in to the possible lives laid bare on the pages. It shows that all of human kinds fears, anxieties, and desires, are universal. Beautiful.

I just recently bought the entire collection of the PostSecret books and I'm really glad I did. I found the books to be inspirational because when I read through them, the secrets remind me how much I'm not different from other people. It just a very human book and it's refreshing to see others being so honest about what they have experianced. One particular secret I read was worth buying the book just to be able to read that one secret whenever I wanted. I think these books make great gifts as well, especially for friends who took pysch! I recommend them, just to have them.

This book absolutely amazing and unique. Sure there are 3 books so far from him, all with the same postcard concept, but each book is direct and revealing. I found myself looking into my life and relationships and thinking that the post cards are saying and showing exactly what I felt/remember feeling. The pages are beautiful and colorful along with the words and writing that somehow display exactly what the writer was feeling. Even if you only read a few pages every once in a while, it will ground and humble you, pick you up, and make you want to be a better person. Truly amazing.

This has got to be the most unusual book I have read; almost 300 pages of secrets. People from all over and all walks of life mailed in post cards sharing their secrets with Frank Warren, then eventually with everyone who chose to pick up his book.
There are secrets about everything from masturbation, rape, adultery, hatred, love, children, loneliness and more. Some secrets are sad, others disturbing, some are funny and silly, others are loving; it is amazing how one sentence on a post card can hold so much emotion. I giggled a little while reading this book and I even shed a few tears. Post Secret is a great coffee table book; I picked it up off my brother's one night and couldn't put it down, I ended up bringing it home with me. It is a quick and easy read; I think it took me all of an hour, cover to cover. The post cards are little pieces of art, and people really put time and effort to design one that reflected their secret. Some of the secrets I could relate to, others I was shocked that anyone could think or do that. This book really made me think about my secrets and would I have the guts to mail one in? Hell, no! ;) But it's fun to read everyone else's! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-08-16 13:01:22 EST)

My review title says it all. One of the main things that drew me to PostSecret is that it is that glimpse into other people's lives, minds and thought processes that all human begins LOVE to get. Let's face it, we all like to hear the dirt on someone else - even if it's someone we don't know. This book is just that.
Also, everyone who reads this book will tell you that at some point they came upon one (or a few) of the secrets that they could relate to. All of a sudden, you find something funny, touching, scary or disgusting and you say to yourself: "wow - that's just like me!" Then you feel a little less alone in the world. :-) Finally, many of these secrets have been presented in really uniquely artistic ways. Check it out, the illustrations and designs are as compelling as the secrets themselves. Definitely something that'll stay on my coffee table for a really long time. An excellent gift. (This is a large book.) Overall - artistic, a unique and novel concept, and often incredibly moving. When I read from it, it makes me feel human and connected to others. It makes me realize how vulnerable others are. Often we don't realize what people keep under wraps; perhaps if we pondered some of the vulnerabilities revealed on the postcards within this book, we might be kinder to one another.

The phenomenal popularity of this book (and the website) can be traced a comment Maya Angelou made many years ago. She said, "we are all more alike than we are different." Somehow, reading these secrets is very comforting and unifying. When I read these mini-stories on each postcard, I realize that the trials and tribulations of my life parallel many other people's stories, too. Ditto for the joys.
Reading these secrets also seems to nibble away on the corners of the profound loneliness that we all seem to be feeling. Back in the day, our sense of community was radically different. Houses were set in busy communities and front porches were a gathering place and a sweet spot for visiting. Now, we're all so busy and so tired and mired in our frenetic lives, that we can't enjoy the leisure of a front-porch visit. We *all* need someone to tell our secrets to and this post-secret project seems to provide a venue for that. So, it seems to be a blessing for both the writer (of the secrets) and the reader. The downside is, some of these "secrets" border on voyeurism and that's a little worrisome. Another downside is, the common theme I hear in many of these stories is that despite our mass communications network, we're all terribly lonely. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-06 04:06:08 EST)

This book makes a person not only realize but truly believe that there is true pain out there, not just the pain that lives deep within.

I visit the website every Sunday when new secrets are posted. I bought the book with the intention of using it on the coffee table. When the book arrived, I unpacked it and had it read within 30 minutes. Love the secrets..some surprising..some sad..some funny. I feel like we've all been there and felt that way.

I love this book. I set it on my coffee table and everyone that has come by has picked it up and read it from front to back.
