Postsecret : Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives

The project that captured a nation's imagination.

The instructions were simple, but the results were extraordinary.

"You are invited to anonymously contribute a secret to a group art project. Your secret can be a regret, fear, betrayal, desire, confession, or childhood humiliation. Reveal anything -- as long as it is true and you have never shared it with anyone before. Be brief. Be legible. Be creative."

It all began with an idea Frank Warren had for a community art project. He began handing out postcards to strangers and leaving them in public places -- asking people to write down a secret they had never told anyone and mail it to him, anonymously.

The response was overwhelming. The secrets were both provocative and profound, and the cards themselves were works of art -- carefully and creatively constructed by hand. Addictively compelling, the cards reveal our deepest fears, desires, regrets, and obsessions. Frank calls them "graphic haiku," beautiful, elegant, and small in structure but powerfully emotional.

As Frank began posting the cards on his website, PostSecret took on a life of its own, becoming much more than a simple art project. It has grown into a global phenomenon, exposing our individual aspirations, fantasies, and frailties -- our common humanity.

Every day dozens of postcards still make their way to Frank, with postmarks from around the world, touching on every aspect of human experience. This extraordinary collection brings together the most powerful, personal, and beautifully intimate secrets Frank Warren has received -- and brilliantly illuminates that human emotions can be unique and universal at the same time.

I loved reading other people's secrets and was amazed by how many emotions the random statements evoked.
The secrets made me feel sadness, humour, pity, despair, disbelief and revulsion (the wife that puts boogers in her husband's soup when she is pissed off with him); as well as making me recognize myself and ponder my own untold secrets and the freedom of letting them go anonymously.
I love the idea of gaining control over something by making it concrete and putting it outside of yourself.
I think it is an absolutely wonderful and insightful project.

(Hide Review...)  A Great "Read" for Pretentious People Who Like to Waste Trees
Reviewer Permalink
If you're looking for a few entertaining, albeit clichéd anecdotes to read off to cornered house guests and family members, then this is the book for you. Post Secret is intentionally provocative in the worst kind of way. If a high school creative writing class was asked to do an anonymous project on Twitter, this would be the result. But even that hypothetical situation would probably produce more original, thoughtful commentary. While the presentation of the postcards and the overall design of the book are attractive, the content is transparent, predictable, and egocentric.

The premise of the book is interesting. I love the idea of using anonymous confessions as a healing tool, but there is something fundamentally wrong with the execution of this book. Perhaps its the fact that when creator, Frank Warren encourages people to "Reveal anything," he actually means write something shocking. The majority of postcards published in this book contemplate regret, self-loathing, jealousy, lust, abuse, narcissism, hypocrisy, etc. The project allows participants to relieve themselves of guilt, even get a little attention for their ventures into the "taboo", but ultimately these words do not translate into real change. Readers and writers get to alleviate their guilt with the reassurance that everyone else is just as self-centered and insecure as themselves. No uncomfortable confrontations, no consequences, no responsibility towards anyone else. Any chance that the participants in this book are also Facebook addicts? This book can be considered very successful, if the goal is to feed our self-indulgent emotions or popularize suicide and abuse. No wonder postal workers are depressed. While I do see value in collaborative, forward-thinking writing projects that bring people together, I cannot help but feel that Post Secret represents a rather narrow socio-economic group. Did anyone notice that a lot of the handwriting looks the same?

Kudos to those who got what they needed out of this project, but it makes me sick to think of the number of trees and paper wasted. They should have printed the Suicide Hotline number on every page. Instead, they placed it just above the publication information. Because readers always pay special attention to that page, right? This book makes me want to stick my head in the oven just so that I can forget that someone at Harper Collins actually published this.

Any absolutely amazing collection of people's inner thoughts and secrets, each submitted to the author on a post card. A great idea, and a great read. This book really makes you stop and think about the secrets in your own life, as well as wonder what inner secrets those around you have and never share.

First off all I would just like to say, I love this book. I love Frank Warren and everything he has done.
Inside this book you will find the deepest secrets of strangers just like you, and if your lucky you might even find yourself in this book. The only reason I gave it four stars if because I feel like...people get much to caught up in reading postsecrets and often think those secrets are about them. For me, the first time I read it I felt so...Weighted down by all the secrets...Carrying them around for weeks and feeling deppressed even if they weren't my secrets to be deppressed about. So, I only advise you to read this if you have a good sense of Judgement and can tell the difference between reality and not reality. Take Caution, and enjoy it. It might just save your life <3

The artwork on many of the postcards was intriguing, evocative, and perfectly-suited to the secret. The secrets were, however, far more often than not depressing or worrisome. While the writers of the secrets may have felt released by sending them off (and that fact is itself debatable), I felt weighed down by knowing their secrets. Additionally, I felt a little manipulated in that we have no way of knowing if the secrets are real or fiction -- did at least some of these writers create secrets in the hope of eliciting sadness and concern in the readers? We have no way of knowing and that ambiguity leads to my ambivalence.

I <333 Postsecret and think it has a great message. I think this book is perfect for all adolescents and adults. 12+ though I'd say.

But I think it makes a fantastic gift. Especially for any sentinmental or hopelessly romantic people you know. Also a great casual gift such as birthdays. But also works as a thoughtful gift such as Christmas or Valentines day.

I say it is well worth the money. Hope this helps! =D

This was a great book! PostSecret.com is a website where people can anonymously send their deepest secrets, ones they haven't told anyone. Whether they be sad, angry, funny, or just plain weird, just put it on a creatively decorated postcard and send it out. Post Secret took some of their favorite submissions and made books to share them. This is the first one I've bought, and I intend to buy the rest for people to read and share in people's secrets. You've gotta buy it -- you'll be suprised at how many secrets you have in common with these folks.

I love the post secret books. I actually read these before taking a peek at the website. My friend turned me on to post secret last year and convinced me to buy the books. I'm glad I listened. Some secrets are disturbing, but not offensive at all. I definitely wouldn't let kids read the books, but I have passed them around to all my friends and most of my family.

This is a book unlike any I have seen. What I like best about it is that you can read it all at once or one "card" at a time, if you only have a minute of two.

It's interesting to see what people write about and it also makes for great discussion with a group or significant other.

If you're looking for a gift idea, this is a good one. It's unique and a book that even people who don't normally enjoy books will like.

Very Interesting book - but in my opinion, I was not prepared for all the sorrow in people. I had heard of the book and my daughter (17) wanted to read it, but after reviewing the book myself, I decided I could not give it to her. As a parent, I try to keep the gloom from her life as much as possible. In life, every person has gloom and bad times. With some people, the bad times are much worse. If she must experience the bad times, I would rather her not be exposed to more. (Some people will think this idea is totally wrong, but these are my thoughts.)

I love this book and idea. I go to the website occasionally and cry every time with tears of joy, sadness, pride or anger. Reading some entries make me want to open my life to others and show those in my life just how special they are to me. I also like the fact that the postcards have to be original... nothing like creative juices to help with healing.

I still have to send out my own secret.

I received this book as a gift and read it that night, in one sitting. I just couldn't stop sifting through the secrets on each page. So many were funny, disturbing, or heart-wrenching. And I could relate to so many of them.

The artwork on the postcards ranges from quick sketches to gorgeous collage but, with every piece of art so personal, it's easy to get caught up in each image. The only complaint I have is with the two-page spreads. When the text runs over two pages, the binding can make it hard to read. I wish everything had been printed in its original size or on a single page.

This is a beautiful book, full of so much of the human experience. It made me wonder what my secrets would be.

I love PostSecret and I love what Frank has done with the project. In a world where people are hated and looked down upon for being different, the website makes you realize that there's others out there just like you. With the same secrets as you. You feel connected to others.

With that said, I think Frank could have done a better job with his first book. I opened it thinking it was going to be full of secrets I haven't seen before but instead it was secrets that had already been posted on the site. 95% of them were repeats for me. For Frank to take something that I already saw for free and try to charge me to read them again I thought was a rip off. I'm glad I read it while sitting in a big comfy chair at Barnes and Noble. Don't buy the book but I urge others to keep visiting the website.

Finally, after having this on my wish list for forever, I finally bought it. This will be a great coffee table book. I loved the post card artwork and the layout of this book. This is more of an art book than a book meant for just revealing secrets. Don't let this deter you from reading it, though. While the words may be few, they can run the gammit of making you laugh out loud, to making you empathize, to making you cry. It's a powerful book. Both the postcard art and words are artwork in themselves. I think it's so interesting, it will be hard for anyone to resist taking it off your coffee table to flip through. I'm glad I bought it. Plus, someone slipped their own admission into the book I purchased, which I thought was pretty cool. (Gasp, I did not buy it from Amazon, although I recommend you do because I paid the full price for it at Barnes and Noble.)

I found this book fantastic on a number of different levels. First, it was artistic...people sending in postcards that were original and/or altered to fit their mood. Second, it was truth...or at least something close to it. People sharing their deepest secrets, expunging their soul and saying what they really think. The collection goes from high drama to low comedy from page to page, and kept me enthralled from dust jacket to dust jacket.

I've been a fan of the PostSecret site for awhile now. It's a project started by Frank Warren back in late 2004 involving blank postcards. He spread them around and asked people to share a secret on the card, decorate it as they saw fit, and then mail it anonymously to him. In short order, the project took on a life of its own, and Warren started receiving cards and letters from around the world. The book PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives is a full-color compilation of some of these mailings, and it's fascinating.

Behind the cover of anonymity, people are willing to 'fess up to numerous things that are dark secrets never before revealed. Going through the book, you see secrets such as "He's been in prison for two years because of what I did. 9 more to go.", "I wish my parents could see me for what I am, instead of what I didn't become.", and "I am contemptuous of others so it hurts less then they are indifferent to me." The words themselves can be funny, haunting, sad, or shocking, but the real impact is the artwork that adorns the cards. It's there that you get the full emotional impact of what the writer is saying. For instance... A "Hello, My name is..." tag with the space filled in as "I force new acquaintances to address me by my shortened name because it makes me forget my past.". Or there's the picture of the wrecked car with the hand-written note "I almost decided not to get out, once I knew I'd hit the river."

Not all the items are as dark as what I've noted above. There's "I believe in destiny, and I think I know mine. :) :) :)", "I had a cyst on my face that ruined 7th and 8th grade. Now I love it because it makes me different.", and my favorite (written on a Starbucks cupholder)... "I give decaf to customers who are RUDE to me!"

I guess part of the fascination with PostSecret is the lurid stuff that shows up. But it's also a reminder that what you see on the outside of someone is in all likelihood far different than what they see on the inside. It once again reminds me that everyone is struggling with something in their lives.

There are other books in the PostSecret series, and I have them on hold at the library. This book was excellent in a thought-provoking way, and I look forward to more.

"Some of the most beautiful postcards in this collection came from very painful feelings and memories. I believe that each of us has the ability to discover, share, and grow our own dark secrets into something meaningful and beautiful." ~ Frank Warren

There are some things you wouldn't even tell your best friend. Instead, you might consider telling Frank by sending him a creative postcard. What started off as an idea for a community art project has morphed into numerous books.

Some of the postcards show a sense of humor, while others show a dark side inspired by people's psychological pain. You may be shocked by some of the vindictive thoughts or even surprised by your own emotional response to the honesty in the messages. Here are a few I can actually include in a review (others are too private to post):

"I put coins in other people's parking meters."
"I am home-less and no one (not even my family) knows about it."
"I give decaf to customers who are rude to me."

One thing I know for sure is that some people have given me regular coffee instead of decaf! In this book such a dark side is now revealed.

This book is a fairly quick read because most of the postcards have just a few sentences. Most of the postcards are artistic and represent the feelings and moods of the writer. That is what makes so many of them unique. While reading I had thoughts about sending in a postcard with my own secrets. This book is sure to inspire you in such a direction.

The boldness of some of the messages is astonishing. You can learn here what the REAL world is all about. Some of the messages are funny, some sad, but most of them will make you stop and think about the way we interact with others, what are desires are, etc. I think the reader will often well relate with many of the messages. I definitely encourage everybody to either get the book or at least visit the website.

After reading Warren's second book, I decided to get this one (his first)to see how his project had started. This collection of secrets is a true testament to our vulnerability. As you read it you'll experience many emotions (e.g. sadness, hope, joy). In a way it is cathartic because it somehow makes you take a closer look at your life and examine whether you are truly happy or simply "pretending to be" happy while carrying so much emotional baggage. You'll love it. It's an easy read. You won't be able to put it down. Then you'll go back and read it again. After all, we all have secrets! :)

i liked the book but then i realized that i just paid a lot of money for a picture book. it's interesting to read other people's secrets of course but ...not worth the cash.

it's the EXACT same thing as reading it online on his website. why pay for it if you can see it for free online [on his site]. this applies to all postsecret books...

i would think buying the book would add some sort of umph to it but no.

The Post-Secret phenomenon is at first strange and awkward. Why would anyone want to post their secrets? However, this sensationalist activity of peering into other peoples lives, becomes and truly beautiful and heart wrenching exercise in empathy. It's absurd at first that one would care about the anonymous letters, but the reader is sucked in to the possible lives laid bare on the pages. It shows that all of human kinds fears, anxieties, and desires, are universal. Beautiful.

It just a very human book and it's refreshing to see others being so honest about what they have experianced. I just recently bought the entire collection of the PostSecret books and I'm really glad I did. I found the books to be inspirational because when I read through them, the secrets remind me how much I'm not different from other people. It just a very human book and it's refreshing to see others being so honest about what they have experianced. One particular secret I read was worth buying the book just to be able to read that one secret whenever I wanted. I think these books make great gifts as well, especially for friends who took pysch! I recommend them, just to have them.

I bought this as a gift for my twenty-something brother. I started to glance through it a little before wrapping it, and ended up sitting with my nose in it for an hour. Really cool coffee-table book.
