Pocket Medicine: The Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of Internal Medicine (Pocket Notebook Series)

Prepared by residents and attending physicians at Massachusetts General Hospital, this pocket-sized looseleaf is one of the best-selling references for medical students, interns, and residents on the wards and candidates reviewing for internal medicine board exams. In bulleted lists, tables, and algorithms, Pocket Medicine provides key clinical information about common problems in cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, nephrology, hematology-oncology, infectious diseases, endocrinology, rheumatology, and neurology. The six-ring binder resembles the familiar "pocket brain" notebook that most students and interns carry and allows users to add notes. This Third Edition is fully updated, has tabs to help readers locate organ systems, and has more cross-referencing in the index. It also has pockets in the front and the back of the book to accommodate the reader's own notes.

Gave this as a Christmas gift to a med. student about to go out on rotations. Greatly appreciated. All present enjoyed reading through it. Fits nicely in a gown pocket for fast reference. Readable by a layperson. Highly recommended.

I'm just amazed that the authors have managed to include so much information in a little handbook.yes the fonts are small but that's the only downside.suitable for both students and residents.highly recommend it.

The font is too small for me, so it makes this book too difficult to be useful. I will take a guess the font is about 4pt or 5pt.

(Hide Review...)  Cumbersome and aesthetically unpleasing
Reviewer Permalink
Though one would think that this handbook would contain the pinnacle of organized medical information given its MGH roots, upon using it they would be sorely disappointed.

One major issue with this book is the extreme amount of acronyms present. Though a legend exists explaining the acronyms, it is cumbersome to require the reader to flay to and fro when trying to decipher a statement from the book. Compounding on this problem is the minuscule font size - you'd better have 20/20 vision if you're going to use this manual. The layout is also confusing and ugly, with no real pattern to each page. It looks as if Dr.Sabatine made mini-copies of his personal internal medicine notes and put them up for sale.

I cannot recommend this book to anyone. If you're a medical student on the wards, you're better off reading actual textbooks, like Robbins and Cecil, to understand the material. Books like this will only confuse you - they're a tool for knowing what to order, not a way to learn the material. Residents and attendings would be better served with the Oxford handbook(written in actual prose), the Washington Manual(again, prose though very textually dense), and for the residents that use the metric system - all but those in the USA - the excellent "Approach to Internal Medicine" book by Hui.

Reviewer Permalink
This is an excellent pocket book for differential diagnosis in a hospital setting. I am in my last years of medicine and I wanted to purchase a book that could remind me just the essentials on symptoms, signs, diagnostic tests, differential diagnosis and basic principles of therapy. It satisfied all those needs. It also puts references where is needed.
This book lacks medication doses and in order to interpret it you have to have a basic understanding in the theme you are consulting, it is not for a first read in the subject.

Whatever people may say, for an intern this is a great resource to have in your pocket when you're deciding which tests to order and how to shape your assessment and plan. Reviewer Permalink
Holds 90% of Medicine Dx that you will encounter as a resident.
Concise, bullet point format easy to decipher and understand. It is by no means comprehensive, but covers a lot of ground for the size and convenience.
Great charts and fast tx for the bread and butter of medicine, helpful with workups for almost any case syncope, GIB, fevers, electrolyte imbalance, cp, SOB, so forth...it evens has significant classifications and prognosis when relevant.
Has a nice appendix with ACLS algorithms, ICU meds, ABx and formulas
This is only a high yield pocket book, and as with any medical field you enter, a reference is also supplemented.
I recommend this along with pocket MD (or maxwells), a good pharmacopedia (PDA/book), and EKG book and you should be set for the wards.
Personally, I use it daily!

(Hide Review...)  In many hospitals around the country....
Reviewer Permalink
Before residency I rotated at many hospitals throughout the US. Washington, Utah, Maine, Alaska....and now as an Emergency Medicine resident, California. In all those places the many interns and students walking the halls had various references in their pockets. This little red book (which was blue before this edition) is the one reference I see continually in many pockets and that I use regularly. Whether on Medicine, EM, Surgery, SICU, etc.... it covers what you need in an easy to read, digest and use format. There is no perfect reference, but this will get you a long way and from what I have seen, most students & residents feel the same. Highly recommended! The ring binder format is nice, allows you to add your own 4x6 note-cards with your own pearls to the sections you want or to mark the sections of patient problems that you are following. The only downside I see is that the pages are very thin and easily tear at the ring binder holes as you flip through the book, but it is so useful I would spend the time fixing these pages because I won't give up this book!

(Hide Review...)  disappointing...
Reviewer Permalink
I agree with the last reviewer on all points. This book is quite disappointing. The content is superb but the presentation is horrendous. The publisher did a very poor job. Ringbinder is bulky, impossible to open quickly and flip through pages, pages are too thin, and font is ridiculously small. There are large portions of the pages left blank for "note taking" but ink bleeds through the "tissue paper" pages (You're lucky if you don't poke a hole through it first with the tip of the pen). The favorable reviews sound like suck ups. I give it 5 stars for excellent content, but subtract 3 stars for lack of usability in the real world

(Hide Review...)  Dropped the ball at the goal line...
Reviewer Permalink
Excellent content, but made less useful by poor publishing choices. Ringbinder takes up too much space/weight, impossible to handle quickly, pages rip out easily(only format available when I ordered). Paperstock is feather thin, print on obverse bleeds thru(anybody who gets more than a few months of use without loosing a page must be quite 'delicate'). Font is very very small and the ink is pale. These authors don't work nights anymore. Authors claim of 'color' is truely singular, a pale pink is sometimes seen. The favorable reviews sound like plants and juniors sucking up.

This book is awesome for studying, although you have to have a basic knowledge of the subject because many terms are abbreviated. This is one of the best tools to have as a 3rd year medical student. It has great information on conditions like differential diagnosis, labs to run, and treatment. It is user friendly and brief- perfect for the wards. It's a tool I use multiple times a day to look up something quickly (ie: how to calculate an Aa gradient, when to give steroids in PCP pneumonia, etc.). I'd highly recommend getting it at the beginning of your clinical years and holding onto it through residency.

(Hide Review...)  Great tool for Medicine students or residents
Reviewer Permalink
I bought this book when i started my residency in the summer of 2007 only because everybody else did, without knowing what it is or how it could be of any help.
It proved though a valuable assistant when i didn't have have immediate access to Uptodate. It actually saved my day in some Program Director rounds when i sneaked behind another colleauge and found the right answer including the reference - guideline in this book...
It has a lot of evidence based diagnostic and treatment options including very frequently the specific reference - article -guideline which makes your life much easier - you go online and read it 3 hours later, when your patient is feeling better.
Of course my 2007 edition is not the most updated version but yearly updated versions come out and i think a 2009 edition is coming out soon
Its drawbacks include the fact that it does not cover rare diseases/cases you might encounter, and it is not the best of references if you need very specific info on subspecialty topics. For these cases you will need something like the Washington Manual Subspecialty series
It is better than the Washington Manual in that it can fit in your labcoat pocket, but it is including much less details and number of topics.
Overall it is a useful tool for residents/students in Medicine Wards for quick - NOT in depth reference

This book is a great reference for any medical student or pharmacy student. I purchased this book for clerkship, as the medical students were always looking at it. Every common disease state is in there, as well as diagnostic criteria such as the Duke or Wells criteria. It also has a place where medical abbreviations are located which are handy when reading notes. It has a nice medication section for the ICUs, antibiotic, and other medications. I love this book!

Although the expectations for medical students are not that of residents and interns, this book is very helpful. Evidence-based medicine is the term heard over and over on the wards and this pocket book will help with that. When presenting a patient, you may be asked which study showed the effectiveness of which treatment. This book has it. It is updated with references as recent as 2007 which is impressive. It will also save time when preparing a talk because as mentioned, the landmark studies are all incorporated in the text. Worth upgrading from the 2nd edition.

Pocket Medicine is an outstanding quick reference, covering an astonishing amount of information in a small notebook.

During spare moments, I can review the well-designed chapters. When I need a reference, the facts are laid out in a clear and logical format, and referenced to journals and studies where appropriate.

A more complete index is the one thing I would add to this book, but that's a small quibble. It's easy enough to add notations to the back of the book, or add a few extra pages (the binder takes standard six-ring refills, such as FiloFax Personal pages).

My pockets are lighter since I found Pocket Medicine.
