Plum Lucky (Stephanie Plum Novels)

Looking to get lucky?Stephanie Plum is back between-the-numbers and she's looking to get lucky in an Atlantic City hotel room, in a Winnebago, and with a brown-eyed stud who has stolen her heart.Stephanie Plum has a way of attracting danger, lunatics, oddballs, bad luck . . . and mystery men. And no one is more mysterious than the unmentionable Diesel. He's back and hot on the trail of a little man in green pants who's lost a giant bag of money. Problem is, the money isn't exactly lost. Stephanie's Grandma Mazur has found it, and like any good Jersey senior citizen, she's hightailed it in a Winnebago to Atlantic City and hit the slots. With Lula and Connie in tow, Stephanie attempts to bring Grandma home, but the luck of the Irish is rubbing off on everyone: Lula's found a job modeling plus-size lingerie. Connie's found a guy. Diesel's found Stephanie. And Stephanie has found herself in over her head with a caper involving thrice-stolen money, a racehorse, a car chase, and a bad case of hives. Plum Lucky is an all-you-can-eat buffet of thrills, chills, shrimp cocktail, plus-size underwear, and scorching hot men. It's a between-the-numbers treat no Evanovich fan will want to miss!

This was my first Janet Evanovich book. It was chosen by someone in my book club. I don't even want to finish it, it is so ridiculous! I didn't think the characters were very well developed and it was just too silly, not even entertaining. I really don't know what there is going to be to discuss about this book at book club. There was no depth to it at all.

What initially got me hooked on Stephanie Plum's novels was Grandma Mazur - she is a hoot! I found myself laughing uncontrollably more than once and there are very few books I can say this about.
This book is short and funny and a perfect way to while away a summer afternoon. But I have to warn you there is very little of Morelli and the Rangerman...can't have it all!

ok so this was bought before I started reading the 'between' books, what can I say. When I like a series I get them all and start reading. Also the first two 'between' novellas came as freebies with a collection I bought. I have no excuse for buying this one. Granted this one has less of the whimsy of the first two, until the very end. I like the familiarity of the characters from the series and that really is the only good part of them, except of course for that fact that they are short. I would not waste my money on the between series anymore, now that I have read them. Thank heaven 2 of them were free, because now it is only my time that I have wasted.

OK, so you're waiting for the next numbered Stephanie Plum novel, and you're feeling the twitchy symptoms of nutcase withdrawal. This "between the numbers" novella is a nice little snack that passes a (very) few hours, providing a nice mix of the regular characters (Stephanie, Lula, Grandma Mauser) mixed in with Diesel (a somewhat supernatural "betweener" regular) and a few other characters, most notably a former jockey who thinks he is a Leprechaun that can to talk to animals. Among other things, we learn that Dobermans have warped senses of humor, and can't be trusted.

The book is short, sweet and amusing. It lacks the brilliant mix of humor and real creepiness that distinguish the best of the Plum novels, but is a very pleasant way to mark time until the next full size book.

I am a huge fan of the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. As much as I like how unpredictable the stories can go, I didn't care for this between-the-numbers novel. It seems like too many pieces of this shorter story were thrown in for good measure.

The sequel to Plum Lovin' was a riot! In Plum Lucky, Stephanie Plum, sexy bounty hunter, part-time comedian is trying to track down Grandma Mazur who is headed for Atlantic City to spend money ($1 million) that she found on the street. The money was stolen by a green pants wearing, ex-jockey/animal whisperer who thinks he is a leprechaun. The "leprechaun" stole the money from the mobster that Stephanie and Diesel (who is searching for the ex-jockey and seems to be really great at cards) battled it out with in Plum Lovin'. And he needs the money so that he can pay for an ex-race horse's surgery. Of course, Louie (the Tough Guy/ Mob Leader) is still suffering from the effects of the rash that he believes Diesel hexed him with, and is now popping pills like an addict. And on top of that, he is even more convinced that Diesel is "an alien", and at one point wears a tin foil hat on his head to prevent the horse and Diesel from invading his thoughts. He wants his money back and is willing to kidnap the horse and Grandma Mazur to get it back.

Lula (ex-hooker/bounty-hunter) appears in gold spandex and is funnier than ever while pursuing a career as plus sized supermodel career. Connie (office manager to Vinnie) is utilizing her sharp shooting skills. Sexy, black wearing Ranger and lovable/dependable Joe Morelli make brief appearances, but Diesel steals the scenes in this novel. And what we appreciate is the fact that like Ranger, Diesel never invades Stephanie's space more than she will allow, but admires her from afar. And this provides wonderful tension between Diesel and Stephanie, especially since she is determined to remain faithful to Joe, who undoubtedly trusts her. I enjoyed this short Stephanie Plum story and would recommend it to anyone who is a lover of the series, and would like a good laugh.

Sometimes, all you want is mind candy and entertainment that doesn't demand much in terms of time or effort. I picked up Plum Lucky by Janet Evanovich from the library two days ago, and breezed through it in less than a day (only 166 pages). It's a "between-the-numbers" installment of the Stephanie Plum series, which means it's smaller than normal and isn't as involved as the main novels involving that character. Unlike some of her other filler titles, this one is fun, has the flavor of a regular Plum story, and is worth the small investment of time.

Stephanie ends up on a quest to find and rescue Grandma Mazur, who disappeared from her parents home. She stumbled upon a duffel bag full of cash, and decided to buy a Winnebago, drive to Atlantic City, and live it up on the slots. The problem here is that the short man who claims the money is rightfully his (after he stole it from a crime family boss) wants it back so he can save the life of a horse that he's rather attached to. And if that's not complicated or strange enough, Diesel (another one of those mystery detectives in her life) also wants the short guy for a case he's working on, tied to (you guessed it) the stolen money. Stephanie, Connie, and Lulu all head off to the casinos where *everyone* converges at one place. Of course, life is never normal with Lulu or Grandma Mazur around, and Stephanie's life continues to take odd and "unusual" turns. And yes, yet another car gets toasted...

If you're a fan of the Grandma Mazur character, then you'll really like this installment. She's a prominent player here. The interplay between Diesel and Stephanie is also fun and delivers some humorous moments. Plum Lucky is like watching an episode of a favorite comedy. Some you like better than others, but you're mainly there for the entertainment and the characters. Sit back, enjoy it for what it is, and get ready for #14 due out in June.

Grandma Mazur plays a large part in this quick story. You also see a little more if Diesel and others that you expect to. Let's be honest what other character would it be normal to have a story about a lost bag of money, a horse and a car blowing up.

As usual it is a laugh out loud story that can be read alone but you will also enjoy it if you are following the series along in order.

WOW, this is a really light and fluffy break from the intense reality that Janet E. created for Steph in the numbers series. (which are equally funny and scary). and now there is a third and in some quirky kinda of way a new relationship with Deisel. New characters, new scenes and new depths of discovery for Steph, Lulu, Connie and Granda Ma Mazur... its a really fast read and i have to pry the book back out of my freinds hands or probably buy it again.

I picked this one up to listen to while traveling with my elderly mom. It was a cute, mindless listen. When Steph's grandmother discovers a bag of money, it is finder's keepers or so she thinks. Unfortunately, the money is stolen from a local mobster, and he wants it back.

Steph, her sidekick Lula, and the zany cosmic bounty hunter Diesel are just a few of the returning characters you'll meet. Like most of the Plum books, this is a humorous read, with far-fetched themes including leprechauns, curses, supernatural powers, and silly slapstick sometimes suggestive humor. Overall, I liked it, although it was a fairly short listen, less than 4 hrs.

4 stars.

I have read every single Janet Evanovich book which has Stephanie Plum as the central character. This book, while enjoyable, was based on a very weak mystery. Stephanie Plum and her grandmother make the books so very enjoyable, but this novel had very little plot, compared to all the others, and was a short book, as well. I hope that the upcoming Stephanie Plum's fourteenth novel is back to the quality of mystery and length of novel that I've grown to depend on with this series.

In keeping with Janet Evanovich's other Stephanie Plum holiday specials, this St. Patrick's Day themed book is a pure delight. There is less emphasis on mystery and more on laughs as Grandma Mazur leads Stephanie, Lulu, other associated characters and mystery man Diesel on a wild romp through Atlantic City and into a crazy caper involving mob money, a Leprechaun wannabe, and a stolen racehorse. If you're breathing, you will laugh at this book!

Plum Lucky by Janet Evanovich is a Stephanie Plum "Between-the-Numbers" novel and at a mere 166 pages, it can best be described as Plum Lite. Parts of it are rather funny, but there just aren't enough of these moments. Plus as in Plum Lovin', the plot is definitely a stretch.

Grandma Mazur, Trenton bounty hunter Stephanie Plum's grandmom, has gone missing. The last time Plum saw Grandma Mazur, she was toting a bag of cash in Trenton with a midget (little person) trying to get it away from her. It turns out that Grandma stumbled across some stolen dough (from a Trenton mob boss) and she has taken it down to the casinos in Atlantic City. Stephanie and friends (Lula, Connie and Diesel) set off to Atlantic City to find Grandma before she gets in even bigger trouble. The one really decent scene involves Lula acting as the "Queen of Chaos" in the casinos. She creates a diversion by spilling a huge cup of nickels and while trying to chase them down, loses various parts of her anatomy as they fall out of her skintight spandex outfit. Unfortunately, most of the plot was dumb and the part about the horse was definitely over the top.

It seems that Evanovich is just punching out these "Between-the-Numbers" books to fill in the gaps between her longer length number series. As a Plum fan, I'm game for everything Evanovich writes but next time, I just might stick with the numbers. Either that or I'll wait until these smaller novellas come out in paperback.

(Hide Review...)  Grandma Mazur's On The Loose In Atlantic City!
Reviewer Permalink
No one makes me laugh the way Stephanie Plum does. She would have fit right in with my family, and I have to admit that we have to be related somewhere down the genetic road. Then again, maybe it's just Janet Evanovich's skill as an author to expose all the wackos inside the family unit that makes me want to claim kinship.

Despite the fact that this is the 16th book in the series (13 number books and 3 between-the-numbers books), and despite the fact that I can see which direction Evanovich and her characters are probably going to go, the author maintains the same kind of magic that family stories do. No matter how many times you've heard them, you're ready to hear them again. They're always funny and always enjoyable, and there's always something human and endearing about them.

And in this one, how can you not love a midget that thinks he's a leprechaun who's stolen Mafia money just to get an operation for an ex-racehorse he can talk to? Or Grandma Mazur's foray into the wild and wooly environs of Atlantic City's gambling casinos?

PLUM LUCKY is a road trip for Stephanie and company that is truly of mythological proportions - especially with Lula trying out for the role of a supermodel. Diesel, a regular accompaniment of the between-the-numbers adventures, is back for another mad gallop to the finish line, and he's just as mysterious as ever.

Stephanie's long-suffering mother, sandwiched between the impossible generations of her daughter and her mother, calls Stephanie for help. Grandma Mazur is missing in action and Stephanie has to find her. Following Grandma Mazur's backtrail, Stephanie finds out about the duffel bag her grandma got into a fight over with a man dressed as a leprechaun. After Diesel puts in an unexpected appearance, Stephanie finds out that the leprechaun is a known thief named Snuggy, an ex-jockey that claims he can talk to animals.

The adventure quickly turns into a riot. Even though I was expecting - and anticipating - a log of the zingers and one-liners, I still found myself laughing outloud. There's no way a Stephanie Plum adventure comes close to being in the real world, but if it did this is exactly the way it would play out.

Things quickly go from bad to worse when Stephanie finds her grandma. Short of kidnapping Grandma Mazur, there's no way she can bring her home. Until Snuggy shows up again and explains that he only stole the money to pay for an operation on Doug, the ex-racehorse he's befriended. The problem is, the mobster Snuggy took the money from is holding Doug hostage and threatens to kill him if the money isn't returned. Grandma Mazur buys into the attempt to save Doug, but things get worse when the mobster kidnaps her as well.

To make matters even worse, the mobster is Delvina, a guy who's crossed Stephanie's path before and has plenty of reason to hate her. Things are going to get even worse - and more hilarious - as this adventure winds out. You know that when you go into the final battle with Lula packing a rocket launcher that things have seriously exceeded rational limits.

I had a great time with PLUM LUCKY. The between-the-numbers books are intended as fun romps to tide fans over during the holidays before they get the beach read book in the summer. But now my appetite has been whetted for FEARLESS FOURTEEN.

I know these books always hit the bestseller lists even before they are released, then ride the lists for months. But I just don't get it. After chapter two of this (short story bound and sold as a) book, I tossed it aside, incredibly annoyed with the inane dialogue and make-it-up-as-she-goes-along plot. Remember when you were little and you played Barbies, and you'd say as you plunked Barbie along the carpet, "Barbie is putting her sweatshirt on now and running out to meet Ken," and your friend would say, "Ken is pulling up in his car and they are going out to eat cheeseburgers and then find a bank robber." This book is like that. When Stephanie finds her grandmother hours away in the casino and doesn't even bother to phone her frantic mother, who sent her looking for the old lady who had been missing for a few days...that is just sloppy and annoying writing. I was pleasantly surprised by this `between-the-numbers' book after the crushing disappointment of Plum Lovin'. Those of you that did not like either Visions of Sugar Plums or Plum Lovin' should give this one a try, you might be surprised. It reads much more like a well-thought-out numbered book, with a cohesive plot, great dialogue, and the same characters you know and love.

The story is short but sweet, and doesn't skimp on the action or story just because it's a very slim book. There's a lot packed into those few pages, and once I started reading I didn't put it down until I was done. On the down side, it really whets your appetite for the 15th book...

Fans will like this quick read with the usual chaos of Stephanie's life. It's a quick read that most will agree is a classic of the genre. Quick and sticks to story with little involvement of Joe and Ranger.

Whenever I can get my hands on a Stephanie Plum novel I am in heaven!! She is so much fun to read. There will never be enough stories of her for me. As a female bounty hunter she is strong in her own feminine way with good instincts. With just enough bumbling to be lots of fun. She is so relateable and reminds me of my junior high girl friends, giving the kinds of laughs that kids share for hours.

Throw in the mystery and boyfriends, who are there to be hero just when necessary, not to mention the loveable family, especially grandma and obviously you have a hit, over and over.

I can't wait for more books because even if they do make movies or tv shows I will always read Janet's books first.

I'm not familiar with this author, so I'm trying to figure out how a pair of garnet earrings on my wish list somehow triggered Amazon to recommend this book???

I am an avid fan of Evanovich. This book is not up to par with her "numbers" series and appears to be written to meet a deadline. Not as good a read or as fast paced. Seems to be rehash and not much new. I enjoy her usual writing and this does not fit into the normal fun that I have enjoyed in her previous books.

I read this book three times in a week (I needed a laugh). Stephanie's man troubles leave the reader wondering how she will ever choose just one,and Grandma's antics make me wish I could be at least a little bit like her (I'm 86,but not that brave). Lula helps keep things moving. She's a favorite. I hope Janet never stops writing Stephanie novels.

Of course, the story is great!!! But, PLEASE!!! Can we drop Lorilei and get back to C.J. Critt, who is amazingly perfect as a reader for the Stephanie Plum books and characters!
