Pete Egoscue learned a lot about pain when, as a Marine officer, he was wounded in Vietnam. He segued from patient to physical therapist, and now runs a famous clinic in San Diego, where he claims he's helped 95 percent of his patients cure chronic pain--including Jack Nicklaus and Charles Barkley, whose athletic careers he helped prolong. At the heart of his program are stretches and motion exercises to restore proper function to muscles and joints. His methods are often surprising and counterintuitive. For example, for foot pain, he suggests a series of hip exercises. In fact, this is one of the most startling books you'll read about the human organism. Egoscue has strong opinions about how modern life is changing the way our bodies function, reducing the tasks we must perform and thus reducing the functional range of motion of our muscles and joints. Fortunately, he offers movement exercises to restore what nature meant us to have.

Completely read by my wife. She has tried many of the exercises, but one or more has left her quite sore. The exercises must be approched slowly and repetitions of them not done to excess. It takes time to get in shape. There are many more exercises so all cannot be adopted unless a person has a lot of time to devote to this effort. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-03-16 05:34:02 EST)

When I ordered this, I hesitated because I wasn't sure that I would get a book in good condition. GOOD is an understatement. Looks just like new.

An important adjunct tool to use after craniosacral therapy treatments for chronic pain suffers. Also a great educational book for the general public. Karen Jones, OTRl, CLT

I took a chance on the book "Pain Free" because of a referral to me by a niece who could not run and now runs marathons-I have had a severe pronation of the left foot--Big Bad Fallen Arch! The exercises -not really exercises- in Pain Free have built muscles in my feet and ankles, making me able to walk pain free- more and more -without the aid of the orthotic I had made. Mostly not exercises, more like positions that you put your body in, do AMAZING things. YOU FEEL STRONDER, AND YOU FEEL A LESSENING OF PAIN RIGHT AWAY.
If I am consistant, I cannot see how I cannot continue to improve ANY part of my body that hurts. THIS BOOK IS SOOO VALUABLE TO ME--IT HAS BEEN A MIRACLE. I'm still amazed at the relief and improvement each time I do the routines. YOU MUST READ AND STUDY TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO DO THE E-CISES- YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DID. It gives you confidence and results that you are wanting. YOU MUST BE WILLING TO DO 20 MINUTES DAILY (THEN MAINTENANCE)-- AND READ, READ, READ UNTIL YOU FEEL EASY AND COMFORTABLE ABOUT THE SYSTEM AND E-CISES ( EXERCISES). IT'S NOT HARD, BUT IT'S MORE ENJOYABLE KNOWING HOW TO DO EVERYTHING QUICKLY AND EASILY. GOOD LUCK TO YOU, TOO. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-02-07 02:28:22 EST)

I never had back pain until about 5 months ago. Earlier in 2009, I had actually used some examples from this book during a Safety Training session at my workplace I was running. After experiencing the back pain for four months, I grabbed the book off the shelf and studied it more closely.
After reading the book, I determined that I fit Condition I and started the exercises. I have been doing the exercises for the better part of a month at 5-6 days a week. I've also added aerobic and weight training exercise back into my life. The first two weeks, I would feel better right after doing the Condition I exercises until I would get up in the morning. The back pain would slowly creep back in over the course of the day. Then I'd do the exercises again that night, the pain would go away. I kept doing this and in the last week (almost 4 weeks into doing the exercises 5-6 times a week), I noticed that I didn't have pain every day. Writing this, my back doesn't feel painful at all. It feels "normal". As a result of the exercises, I've noticed that my posture is much better most of the time and I find myself sitting up straight in chairs, too. I feel like I'm standing taller. For me, this method seems to be working. The Condition I exercises take me about 30 minutes total to do. For some, they may take longer as the Static Back (and the other back exercise) may require more time if your dysfunction is higher or if you're really out of whack that day. I would have given the book 5 stars just for the improvement in my pain. I've given it 4 stars because I thought the layout could have been a little better. The body diagrams are sometimes several pages from the description - I know it's picky that I have to flip back and forth. The exercise summary page for the different conditions should have the page numbers noted for each different conditions in paranthesis after it's named for convenience. To be honest, I used the page numbers the first couple of times to remember what exercise was and how to do it. I haven't used the book since the first couple of sessions as I remember which ones to do. I think the key for this book is to actually do the exercises and not just read it and thinking - that's not going to work. How will you know unless you actually commit to doing it? Expecting to also do it for a few days and then expect the pain to disappear forever isn't realistic either. I found that it will take time for them to work and it's not a quick fix, at least it hasn't been for me. You might think that doing the exercises just for 3 weeks is pretty fast before I felt significan relief but I did the exercises 5-6 times a week, too. The more you're out of whack, the longer it will take to work probably. I figure that this is something that I will have to do for the rest of my life - essentially be active. I am going to move to D-Lux in a few more weeks and will do those exercises from then on. The major point the book works to get across is that an out of whack posture is what is the cause of pain for many people, athletes or the inactive alike. Getting one's posture back in check is what is needed to reduce and eliminate pain. Figuring out which condition you are can be a little hard. Reread the sections on what to look for -- this could have been clarified a little better in the book, I think. I struggled with this. After rereading the section a few times, I figured that I fit Condition I the best. I figured that I would try one of the other Conditions exercises if the Condition I's didn't work for me. There are several Egoscue associated clinics around the country if using a book isn't your kind of thing. Some of them offer posture analysis for free during certain weeks of the month or you can check the Egoscue web site as I think they can do things via web cam if a book doesn't work for you or if you're not close to an Egoscue practice. Personally, I'm happy with the book and the outcome I've experienced. I'm going to send a copy to my mom who has posture problems - she has one hip that is out of alignment and is causing walking discomfort problems for her. I am hopeful that once we figure out which Condition she is, she can get her hip back where it belongs so she can be more comfortable. I don't work for Pete Egoscue, the Egoscue clinic, nor any clinic that uses the Egoscue method. Will it work for you? I don't know. It has worked for me. I'm happy with the book. In 1980 my dance partner threw me up in the air and "missed" when I came down - I landed flat on my back and had experienced bouts of chronic back pain ever since. The pain had become worse and more frequent over the years until about 18 months ago when I was rushed to the ER in an ambulance because my back had locked up and I couldn't move. I was in so much pain I went into shock. I was also completely bed ridden for over a month and could barely sit up for the next four months. When I could finally stand to have an MRI, I was diagnosed with a bulging disc and stenosis.
Several months of physical therapy and two lumbar injections of cortisone provided relief for about six months and then my back started really hurting again. I remembered that my physical therapist had recommended the book "Pain Free" - and in an effort to avoid more spinal injections or surgery, I bought it and started the exercises. I was not expecting any immediate results, but hoped that eventually I would feel better. I was shocked to find that after the very first time of doing the 20 minutes of exercises, I got up off of the floor and was completely PAIN FREE for the first time in months! I know it sounds unbelievable, but it really_really happened. I've been doing the exercises for about 14 days now and am almost completely out of pain. The idea behind the Pain Free exercises is that misalignment of our bodies is what causes pain. The exercises immediately put you back into alignment - and viola! the pain is gone. I have been recommending the book to everyone I know. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-02-06 09:13:27 EST)

With three herniated discs in my lower back, on-again off-again sciatica and hip and knee pain, I had to resort to using a prescription anti-inflammatory to order get relief. My massage therapist turned me onto Egoscue's book. I didn't really believe these simple exercises would do anything for me. Boy was I wrong! And I didn't have to buy any equipment!
Day one: the tight band over my hip released. Day two: the sciatic pain in the butt released. Day three: the knee pain let up .... Previously, I was rotating between massage, acupuncture, and the chiropractic, which helped for a day or two, but with the Egoscue exercises, everyday I saw a lasting improvement. These exercises work if YOU do the work. Now,I only go for massage, or acupuncture, or the chiropractor for the occasional "tune-up". And I canceled the appointment with the orthopedic surgeon. Allow me to share with you some of my experience with Egoscue. About 14 years ago I was in a car accident and broke my leg pretty severly. After 3 operations to help correct the badly broken leg and around 10 months on crutches I finally got walking again. A few years later I had RSI, and then a few years after that I got knee problems (I didnt know this at the time, but it was ALL related to my posture). I spent hours upon hours trying to correct these problems. I literally spent THOUSANDS of dollars (keep in mind I was only in my early 20s). I was frustrated. Very frustrated. But, I never gave up. I saw chiropractors, physiotherapist, massuers, osteopaths, acupunturist, chinese doctors, surgeons, specialist, movement therapist, neuro surgeons. (and lots of them. This was all in the space of about 7-8 years.
In late 2008 I was at my university library where I found the book Pain Free. I read the book with an open mind. I started the exercises for my particular area. The results were nothing startling. But, I had nothing to lose and I was optimistic. Eventually I called Pete Egoscue, (spoke to him twice- and recieved some very good advice. I have been doing the exercises now for about 12 months. I have an egoscue therapist who has tailor made a serious of exercises to my specific posture. He also makes sure I do the exercises properly. The pain (discomfort) hasnt disapeared. Its still there a little. But, its greatly improved. (And continues to improve with time) Its done more than ALL the other therapy had ever done. For this, Im very greatful for. Maybe egoscue isnt for you. Its not for everyone. I know people who are skeptical (dont we all) that continue to rely on doctors and surgeons for their advice. Thats fine if thats what you want. I see egoscue like SELF HELP for the body. If you like to be responsable for your own health and wellbeing then egoscue may be for you. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-01-03 05:21:55 EST)

This book is very well thought out and is an in depth study on how the skeleton structure is held up by all the muscles and ligaments, then goes on to say how we can combat the negative affects of gravity and other problems that take a toll on the human body. All of the stretches or exercises are very well illustrated and easy to fallow and do. I highly recommend this book for the people out there that have any kind of joint pain and want the help they need without any drugs or difficult exercises.

This is the very best for those who wish to learn "self-help" methods and pain management relative to the spinal column. It addresses all the major pivot points in the human body. I've dealt with two disc-herniations on L4-L5, L5-S1 and surgical procedures on both. If I'd had access to this book over the last 25 years, I could have very possibly alleviated the pain/agony on my own, and saved a small fortune $$$ in the process.
When doing these exercises over a week, if done correctly, you will get some relief. Period! It also address ergonomic seating with it's perils and why it doesn't always work with everyone. I spend hours on the computer, and these 'e-cises' have helped preserve my 'sanity'. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-12-04 05:18:54 EST)

I bought this book after using the method for hip pain. It worked and the pain has never returned. I think everyone should have this book. It is like have first aid for all kinds of muscle/skeletal problems. It seems to address issues that even chiropratic and other physical therapy doesn't. I intend to buy the DVD too to get more pointers on doing the exercises correctly. Great information about the body!

The methods for stopping pain in this book really work - and in minutes! I highly recommend this book to anyone. Don't wait until you have real problems, use the theory in this book now. I was scheduled for knee replacement surgery, but followed the protocol in this book, plus changed to a more alkaline diet, worked out with weights, and added swimming to my workout. Presto! No surgery.
Attempts to get a good workout before alignment were futile - just causesd injury over and over. After doing the knee and back e-cises, I have no injuries. What a relief to have this "tool". Now, I look around and see so many people suffering needlessly only because their bodies are out of alignment. What a shame. Conditions worsen as we attempt to be fit while out of alignment. Read this book and do the e-cises. It is effort well spent. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-11-11 01:33:38 EST)

I purchased the book based on the recommendation of a friend in the medical field and found many of the author's suggestions to be helpful. I am not in chronic pain (although I have some nagging shoulder problems) and was looking for some good sound advise to promote overall fitness and support my active lifestyle.
On the positive side, the book contains numerous simple exercises (called e-cises) and many of these were effective. On the negative side, the author spends too much time trying to convince and motivate the reader. I found myself skipping around to get to the useful information. Overall, I glad I purchased the book and have added it to my reference library. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-10-29 09:37:32 EST)

I bought this book in 1998 and it has changed my life!! I am not kidding. I have lower back problems, and had been in the chiropractor's office as many as 20 times/year. I started doing the exercises for my back and slowly my back improved. I like this book so much, I order it from Amazon and send it to friends that I find that have back problems. I have probably given away fifteen copies over the years. For it to work, you MUST be persistent with the exercises (every day!) and patient. It will take some time before you notice a differnce. Oh, by the way, I have not been in the chiropractor's office in over a year!

I am an occupational therapist and a certified hand therapist who works in a busy outpatient clinic. I had 2 different patients recommend this book to me, one of which actually bought it for me. I was a little skeptical, even though I am pretty open minded. I am a physically active 36 y/o who occasionally gets low back pain and most recently some neck stiffness. I've used the exercises on several occasions and after a day or so the symptoms always seem to subside. I'm not saying it's the answer for everyone, but it's definitely worth a look! I've even recommended to a few patients.

Sciatica first appeared in my life at the end of 2008 as a result of three herniated discs. One was so bad, the MRI showed disc and nerve as a single image. The next 8 months were hell. I spent 90% of my wake time with my back horizontal, either lying down on the floor or on my four. The other 10% was almost all of it hanging from an inversion/teeter table. Had a couple of cortisone shots. A top surgeon told me unless I had surgery I'd not heal. Then a new-found friend recommended "Pain Free", which I am not. My issues developed over many years.
The book by itself will not lead me to complete recovery. But it opened the door. It gave me the hope I was searching for. On the second day (Aug 20) of starting the exercises/positions I stood up and have been up ever since. If your problem is not as severe as mine, you have to get this book. You may not need anything else. If it is, the book will convince you to visit a clinic. Chances are you will do it walking on your own. I did!! Since I came down with this, I've learned of at least 40 other people with similar problems. So I'm talking about this book with anyone and everyone, even total strangers. People who have had pains anywhere from toes to necks, have probably tried a host of treatments, as I have. Egoscue's approach would seem to defy profound treatment methods because they rely on positioning or re-positioning major muscle groups. All of this is based on his understanding of how, as we go through life, we tend to compensate for injuries, strains, etc by changing the natural alignment of our bodies. HIs methods, when followed for significant periods of time, quietly bring the body back to its proper state. It may not work for everyone, but for the conditions he notes in his book, they do seem to work and it's a pleasure to consider the rest of my life living without the kinds of pain that can be healed by following his teachings

This book was a present for my mother in law. She desperately wanted it because her expert 'Rolfing' masseur considers it her 'bible' using and recommending it all the time. I personally have not read it yet, but my mother in law has. She has done many of the exercises recommended in it for her type of back pain. She has felt much better and she loves it! For what I saw it looks like a serious but easy to follow type of book, it has very clear and specific explanations for many different types of chronic pain. After she will finish learning her routines I will give it a try!

This method worked for my acute lower back pain and it also helps with the chronic back pain. Discipline is the key...you have to do the exercises on the maintenance level, just as it states in the book, to continue enjoying the benefits. I highly recommend this process.

I have been religiously doing the exercises in this book for over a month. The first change I noticed was that my shoulders have come back to a more upright position. Then, I realized that the way my feet hit the ground when I walk is more evenly distributed. The best thing is that there are actually periods in the day when I am not in pain from my neck down to my mid-back.
Visits to my chiropractor, who recommended the book, have decreased significantly. I am very happy to give "Pain Free" a five star rating. I know I'll be using this book as part of my wellness program for the rest of my life! (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-09-25 05:19:18 EST)

I read this book and went to a clinic, it may work, but I have a job and a family and to do all the excercises that I should have been doing we were talking about several hours a day. Sorry but 2-3 hrs a day rendered this program unworkable. One other thought is that Jack Nicklaus was a big proponent and very thankful to the author. I read in a golf magazine where Nicklaus said that after several years he was doing 1hr of E method to get 15 minutes of relief from his hip pain and he went ahead and got a hip replacement. Maybe he should have just gotten the hip replacement years earlier.

This is THE Egoscue book you want to buy, if you're in pain or have recurring pain issues.
I bought this book 18 months ago when I was suffering from severe, sudden-onset upper back pain that caused my arm to go numb in certain positions, and had me relying on massive doses of ibuprofen to get through the day, and more ibuprofen plus tylenol with codeine to make it through the night. Chiropractic made it worse (though I've found it helpful with lower back and neck pain in the past). I found Egoscue's exercises remarkably effective, lessening my pain notably in a couple of days (after a good month of no change), and relieving it completely in a few weeks. Because I've been imperfect at following his maintenance routine, I've had a few minor issues with low back, hip, or knee pain in the last year or so, but each one has resolved quickly once I spent a few days using the appropriate routine. A few caveats: Egoscue has no obvious credentials, which bothered me at first (I am a PhD biologist), and his grasp of physiology seems sketchy. His numeric estimates can be wildly off (for example, he refers to a block that is probably about 18" on a side as a 3' cube), which makes me wonder about other suggestions (such as holding certain positions for 40 minutes on each side -- I was motivated, but not THAT motivated!). Many of his 'e-cises' are clearly borrowed from yoga, Pilates, and traditional physical therapy (not necessarily a bad thing, except that he presents them as though he invented them). Whatever the original source, though, he has created remarkably effective routines that really work to reduce pain, ease movement, and improve posture. Final caveat: you really need to do the work. The exercises are not hard, and the ones you do while actively in pain are actually quite gentle and relaxing. But you need to take the time to see the benefits. The maintenance routine at the end of the book (which I follow sporadically) is really worthwhile. I also followed the recommendation from another of his books (Pain Free for Women, not nearly as good as this one), to do strength training, and that has really helped me. (He suggested Miriam Nelson's "Strong Women" books, now she has credentials!) I'm back for a second copy, as I gave the first away to my dad. It's been a great investment -- I doubt I will ever see a chiropractor again! (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-07-12 01:31:41 EST)

I have had incredible results from using Pete Egoscue's method for realigning the body. My primary problem had been back pain that would last around 3 days and return more and more frequently. I decided to do the E-cises consistently for 90 days without question (I used the E-cises for women 50 years and older in the book Pain Free For Women). That was November of 2006 and my back has remained pain free to this date. I have also had many other benefits I wasn't even expecting. For instance, when I would get up in the morning I felt stiff and sore. I attributed this to "getting old." That no longer happens - I feel great first thing in the morning.
Because of my good results, I decided to attend an Egoscue Clinic since there was one nearby. I now have 14 menus to choose from and do one of them religiously each morning. I also do the Progressive Supine most every evening. The time spent is well worth it. Within the last year I have hiked Mt. Whitney in a day (Aug. 2008) and have twice hiked the Grand Canyon rim to rim (Nov. 2008 and May 2009). I plan to hike Half Dome in Yosemite in September. I am 65 years old. Nobody knows the muscular skeletal structure of the body and how it fix it better than Pete Egoscue. I've bought 3 copies of this book so far because so many friends have heard of Pain Free and want to borrow the book. My favorite maxim of Pete's is: Bones don't move muscles. Muscles move bones. This explains why my success with one-dimensional chiropractors has been so short-lived. Pete shows you how to reactivate the appropriate muscles to bring the skeletal structure back in balance and eliminate your pain. I highly recommend this book.

I have been struggling with Runner's knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome) for the past 4 months. 6 doctors and 2 PTs told me, well, it's tough, you probably won't ever really get better even though I have NEVER had any knee issues prior to 4 months ago. A friend recommended this book and I have been doing the e-cises for 3 weeks. I am proud to say that I have reduced the knee pain by at least 90% and each day it feels like an improvement. I am RELIGIOUS about performing the e-cises every day and believe it is paying off. It is the most help I have received and I am VERY aggressive about trying to heal myself. I would absolutely recommend to anyone interested in really healing their ailments. It takes committment because as others have indicated it isn't a 5 minute a day investment. It typically takes me 30 minutes to do the e-cises. Well worth it to get back to running for me.

As a practitioner of Acupuncture, and as a patient who has experienced Low Back Pain I feel I am uniquely qualified to say Pete Egoscues system really works. I have used it successfully myself in the treatment of my own low back pain, and I have used it successfully many times with patients experiencing All sorts of musculoskeletal pain. The system Pete has come up with works very effectively but only if a patient does the exercises consistently over the course of a few weeks to a month. So therein lies the rub! With all forms of health care you run into this problem. Patients come in and want to be fixed immediately, and they do not want to engage in their own healing. For this type of person egoscue is not the answer. However for a person who is responsible for their own health, is self motivated to be a willing participant in their recovery, and wants to heal their pain without the use of drugs and surgery, the egoscue method is nothing short of miraculous. This book is filled with a whole lot of unsubstantiated, unresearched and unsupported hype - unless you consider the authors own anectodes, half-baked theories and personal opinions to be valid. Some of the information in the book is true enough, namely, that being too sedentary can cause problems. But the author makes the claim that pretty much all muscoloskeletal issues are caused by lack of movement, (even, paradoxically enough, the sports injuries of professional athletes)and that further, his "Method", a hodge podge of postures and stretches, some of which are taken and adapted from Yoga, is the solution.
This so-called Method has never been proven to be effective through any research whatsoever, scientifically conducted or otherwise. One would think that in all the years Egoscue has been promoting how wonderful his Method is (apparently since the 1970s) he would have initiated some sort of research effort to substantiate its effectiveness beyond his own opinion and the testimonials of others (testimonial evidence is known to be the least reliable evidence of anything which is why it is not allowed in medical research and given very little weight in the courts). The only "statistics" he provides is that his Method works 95% of the time, by his own account of course. The book is divided up into chapters, each of which focus on a specific part of the body: back, shoulders, knees, etc, and presents Egosuce's conjectured theorizing about what happens when they are in pain or why they become injured, whether it's using the analogy of sticks rubbing together, creating heat and friction, to explain burning sensations in our joints to stating that riding in a car too much will cause people to eventually need a knee replacement. Each chapter also presents at least one horror story/case study of how someone was mangled by modern orthopedic medicine's attempt to address someone's musculoskeletal problem, but in the process left them worse off, thus getting us to fear the orthodox medical establsihment. Egoscue then describes how he restored the person to whatever functionability was possible afterward. And this theme, that the Egoscue Method is your only hope (even though an Amazon.com search using the keyword "pain" turned up numerous such books and methods making the same inflated claims and having the same high user ratings)runs throughout the book. As a matter of fact, to Egoscue, it is a matter of life or death that you use his Method to restore musculoskeketal health, since by now you are probably so far out of whack that attempting to "get in shape" on your own, by exercising and moving more will only further deteriorate your condition, leading you to even less mobility and activity, finally culminating in your bodie's other systems becoming deficient and your eventual premature death (I am not exagerrating, Egoscue actually claims this). Oh but don't worry, if the routines in the book don't work for you, as they didn't for me, the book is constantly reminding you that there are such places as Egoscue Method Clinics which eagerly await your arrival, and the opportunity to separate you from you money. I did visit one for a free consultation, which amounted to an Egoscue therapist confirming that my knee pain is due to my body being misaligned (in ways that conflicted with the explanations of knee pain made in the book)and that $1600 worth of visits to the clinic would fix it. When I decided not to sign up, he tried to sell me on equipment to use at home. Bottom line...this stuff is a bunch of quackery that at best will disappoint you and waist your time and at worst have you at an Egoscue clinic shelling out money. It's been over a decade since I bought my first copy of "Pain Free". I tend to be skeptical of extravagant claims like "pain free", but since my (highly effective) chiropractor strongly recommended it, I finally overcame my reluctance and have been grateful ever since that I did. Once I learned that sticking with the program (there is no free lunch) rather than quitting once my pain subsided, I have, indeed been nearly pain free for many years. Between us, my son, daughter-in-law, and I have used this book to relieve different kinds of pain and have bought many copies over the year to pass on to friends and relatives in pain, all of whom have found relief and many of whom consider this approach nothing short of miraculous. We range from very sedentary to highly active people. I don't know if my chiropractor regrets recommending this book as I no longer require his services...

I'm a chiropractor, and I give a copy of this book to almost all my patients. The results are excellent. The only drawback is that doing the e-cises is time-consuming, so patient compliance is an issue. But for those who take the time to do them, the difference in function can be dramatic.
As Pete Egoscue (pronounced e-GAW-skew) would tell you, there is only room in the book for a few dozen e-cises of the hundreds he has developed. So if you want a more customized program, you can go to egoscue.com to get a list of trained people in your area or to find out how to get a video evaluation and personalized menu of e-cises. This book provided good information an how to reduce pain in specific areas of the body without surgery. I have been experiencing back pain and am currently using some of these methods to reduce pain. While I am not sure of long term success I am currently feeling better.

This book helped me get out of chronic pain, and dependency on chiropractors for "feeling normal". It took a while, and regular commitment, but I'm a believer. The book is great, but you can also order personalized "menus" from the Egoscue Institute itself that are very helpful and affordable (just in case you have a pain issue that you may not know how to address with the book). I believe that Pete Egoscue is definitely onto something. The bones do what the muscles tell them to, plain and simple. I found it easy to look up my areas of pain, and follow the routines in the book, then graduate to the next routine as things evolved and changed.
An added bonus is mental relief. Seriously, once you get out of chronic physical discomfort or pain, the biochemical relationships between your endocrine system, your neurological function, and the way your body feels gradually improve in time. Everything is connected. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-05-02 05:02:33 EST)

I injured my back from a massive impact I received while snowmobiling. I was in pretty rough shape for months. I bought this book after searching online and immediately began using the exercises.
Things improved, but just moderately. I couldn't figure out why I would be one of the few to get so-so results, especially with all the glowing reviews. So I was a bit disappointed. But then I went back and scrutinized the exercises. That's what finally did it... The exercises are very simple, but they have very important subtleties and details that you must not overlook or skip. Following them precisely is essential. As an example, one of the exercises requires you to sit with your back flat against the wall. That's easy enough (or so you would think), but then come the other components. You need to flex your toes (feet) back towards your chest while keeping your quadriceps (front thigh muscles) tightly contracted. To this add resting the backs of your hands on the top of your thighs while at the same time pressing your shoulder blades back into the wall. Now hold this for a few minutes. May not sound that difficult (and really it's not) but keeping all of these muscles engaged for extended periods requires keeping your attention pinned to what you're doing. This is why the exercises didn't seem to work for me initially. When the author tells you to keep your toes flexed back towards your chest, he means to do it the entire time. When I finally figured out all the nuances and got everything working at once, it was -- to be honest -- excruciatingly painful... but oh what a sweet pain it was. After two key exercises in the very next exercise session virtually all the pain was gone. It vanished completely shortly thereafter and has never reappeared since (6 years now). This one you can order with confidence -- the exercises really do work. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-03-29 15:03:12 EST)

This book has great merit, some of the exercises do indeed produce the results claimed but for me the jury is still out on the effedtiveness for my particular back pain. I want to work it more before I give judgement. Shoulder pain, knee pain, foot pain, worked as advertised.

Book has good, easy directions with pictures that are useful. It might be good to get the CD because it is hard to read and do the exercises by yourself while learning them.

Every once in awhile one encounters not only an expert in his field but also someone who is head and shoulders above others in his field.
The author is such a person. He has remarkable insight as to the cause of pain as a result of dysfunctional musculoskeletal problems. In addition, he has developed unique exercises to correct the dysfunction. He recommends specific exercises for specific pain. Once the pain is gone, he recommends daily exercises to forestall any reoccurrence. My several year problem with pain from plantar fasciitis is gone and my more recent shoulder pain is gone. Highly recommended. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-03-07 05:51:16 EST)

This book with Pete's exercises (they are really stretching routines) is a must for us folks that have crossed over forty. I am fifty five and after I stretch for 30 minutes in the morning my joints and muscles feel much better. As Pete says in the book, the reason our joints deteriorate is not because of overuse, it is because we don't move enough and most of us have bad posture. The book is easy to read and very informative. He doesn't use medical jargon to explain his principles. I highly recommend it.
