As a researcher, I use this book often, even when I am discussing non-religious topics. Wilson offers insightful wisdom in many areas of social life. He offers not only historical perspectives on Christianity and its Jewish roots, but also on areas such as education, family life, language, and culture.
This book is a must-have for any personal library. It remains academically enriching as well as personally challenging to me ten years after I first read it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-28 05:13:11 EST)

The books were sent timely, and the read was an amazing easy read, very educational material if you really want to understand the roots of Christianity. I bought several copies to help friends to see the fundamental start to many practices that are followed "just because" we learned to do things coming up.

I found the book to be good until I got the part that mentions that gentiles are NOT obligated to follow the commandments of YHVH. In essence it is saying that He has two standards. Not true. Multiple times in the Torah YHVH mentions that there is one law for the homeborn and the stranger that sojourns with them. He has only one standard for all mankind who choses to follow Him. The "noachide laws" are a way that man has come up with to try and get around the fact that we are to follow YHVH's commandments. Of course a good study is in order to decide if what I say is true or not. Nazerene Israel is the faith of the apostles throughout the book of Acts. Shouldn't it be ours too?
Another false point that I found in this book is that they believe Yahshua died on a Friday instead of Wednesday. This is an interesting study for those who are serious about being seekers of the truth. The only sign Yahshua said He would give was 3 days and 3 nights. A Friday death and Sunday resurrection is 3 days by reckoning but only 2 nights, not 3. In this study you will find that He was killed on a Wednesday and rose right at the end of Sabbath (Saturday), see Mt 28:1, the seventh day not the first as is typically taught. I figure that if this book can't get Yahshua's name, death and resurrection, and the importance of one law and one standard for all correctly then there really is no point in anyone reading this book. It was written and caters to mainstream christianity and its dogma. The truth is out there. Seekers of the truth will find it. Yahshua meant this in Mt 7:14. Few will "FIND" it. Be blessed seekers. After a recent trip to Israel, I started to wonder why, if the beginnings of Christianity was in fact Jewish, does the church look nothing like Judaism? Why does Judaism celebrate Biblical holidays, while the Christians make up their own and claim they are of God? I did not get it. Who are we fooling....December 25 was not the birthday and we all know it. Yet, the Jews celebrate holidays that they KNOW were given by God Himself.
I tried asking many pastors and theologians and found that most are not too thrilled to get questions like this. They squirm and try to get me out of their offices as fast as they can. I get the glossed over fake smile and now most avoid me like the plague =) I just wanted answers and truth! I firmly believe, by faith, that if you ask, you will receive. If you truly seek, the answers will come to you. I believe that this book is of great value in that quest for answers and truth, if you really want that. I came to see things differently than I have been taught for years. I think if you are at the starting point of trying to understand these things, this is the book for you. By the time I read the book, I think I was further on the path so a lot of it was review for me. It is a great book for me to give to others as they look at me like I am crazy with my Hebraic roots interest. Who knows, maybe I have lost it. I do know, though, that my faith makes MUCH more sense looking at it through this Jewish lens. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-23 08:58:18 EST)

Excellent book - Dr. Wilson is a marvelous author who takes you through the history of the Church thru Hebraic eyes. I have never learned so much from one author. Churches need to get this book in the hands of their pastors who could use it for sermons and/or bible studies. Haven't you ever wondered how the church came to be what it is today??? Why so many different religions?? Why the anti semetic atmosphere even today?? Read this book!!

Dr. Wilson's book is the best single volume work on the Jewish roots of Christianity I've ever read. It may be a tough read for some and not academic enough for others, but I prefer to think it splits the middle! The review questions at the end of each chapter help nail down the most important points in the book. Necessary reading for all Christians.

Although this book is a bit difficult to read (due to all the information contained within) it is a must read for those of the Jewish faith or those looking to understand the basis for Christianity! Wonderful book full of heavy reference material. Provides a detailed path from early Judaism to the Christian church (and all that transpired in between).

I love the concept of the book however the language is very lofty for the lay person. It is written in text book language.

What best review can I give for a book that just changed my whole life? I think the best I can do is to honestly warn other readers about this power: "Watch out! This book will change your life!" But this will only happen if you read it honestly, with a true desire to acknowledge the title: "Our Father Abraham". Dr. Marvin Wilson, simply and powerfully, explains what Christians have lost since departing from the Jews. And, of course, what Jews might benefit from the Christian experience. Have you ever watched "A Fiddler on The Roof"? Well, I hadn't, until I read this book. Now it's one of my favorite movies, because I know what's behind it! In short, if you really want to understand the Hebraic roots of your faith, don't start anywhere else. Buy it right now! And recommend it to as many of your dears as possible. But warn them: "Watch out! This book will change your life!"

This book finally reveals and understands the in-depth relationship of Christianity and its roots. There are millions of people that have lived before Christ was on Earth but they believed in the same God. You will see them in heaven although they have never met Jesus personally while on Earth since Jesus was born after they died.

For those of us that are interested in history -- for those of us that are wanting to learn more about the background of the Christian faith -- and the significance of how to apply the things that we have learned in earlier studies, this book puts answers to many of our questions. Each section is covered, footnoted, documented thoroughly. This is not my first copy of this book, but a second copy that I have purchased as a gift, and I'll surely get additional copies for further gifts....

Marvin Wilson has truly written a Classic in the field of the Jewish Roots of Christianity. This book will fill the beginner hungering to understand his/her spiritual heritage. It will also enlighten those already seasoned in this field by bringing a competely unique perspective on the topic.
I've been immersing myself in the Jewish Roots revelation for 6 years now, and this amazing book brought an insight I hadn't read in all my years of research. Again, this is a MUST READ!! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-04 08:59:47 EST)

If you are wondering how the recognition of hebraic roots was lost in mainstream Christianity or how it can be regained, this is the book for you. The author takes you through history from the time of Christ until modern day in a stepwise fashion to show how the ancient ways were lost and new traditions formed.
Marvin Wilson also gives introductory keys to understanding Hebraic thought and elements of Judaic heritage that were honored by the early church but lost. He concludes by discussing how we can recapture this lost way of understanding YHWH. If you are new to Hebraic Roots, this book is an excellent starting point. It will generate questions, discussion (there are detailed discussion questions at the end of each chapter so that the book can be used in a study group environment), and desire to gain more understanding. Someone oulined some of the chapters in this book. Just look at the index. All are interesting chapters with so much information. It is one of the best books I read this year. if you are interested in Jewish-Christian dialouge this is an excellent book to read. It has questions at the end of each chapter that I didn't answer but that I should and every reader should.

This is a stunning achievement and a life changing book! Wilson calls Christians to examine their Hebrew roots. Once you discover the roots of Christianity run deep into Hebrew soil you will never view the Bible the same way.
Abraham is father of us all, as Paul wrote to the Romans (Rom. 4:16). He is father of believing Jews, and he is father of believing Gentiles (Rom. 4:11, 12). So if we belong to Christ, we are Abraham's seed (Gal. 3:29). We have that wonderful Abrahamic connection. To many Christians are surprised Christian's roots are in Judaism. Wilson excellent balanced work gives an information in all areas of Jewish culture and what it means to us today. The book is broken down into five parts. They are: 1. A New People: Abraham's Spiritual Children 2. The Church and Synagogue in the Light of History 3. Understanding Hebrew Thought 4. Jewish Heritage and the Church: Selected Studies 5. Toward Restoring Jewish Roots Each packed chapter includes sub points that will enhance your study and understanding of the Bible. Wilson's goal is to help the reader see the strong link between Judaism and Christianity and the Old and New Testaments. By seeing and understanding this link, it is hoped that the reader will be able to develop a more authentically Biblical lifestyle. Study questions are included at the end of each chapter. This excellent, Scripturally based study is written with compassion and authority and reveals how the roots of Christianity run deep into "Hebrew soil", showing the Hebrew heritage of the Christian Church to be rich and extensive.
The book describes at the outset how this heritage has been largely unexplored/ignored by Christian seminaries, colleges and other educational institutions. Through a Biblical, historical and cultural study, the book examines what our "predecessors" in the Judeo-Christian faith have delivered to the Church of today. The opening chapters of this work provide a historical perspective on the Jewish origin of the Church with the book going to great lengths to emphasise the fundamental truths that "Jesus Christ Himself was a Jew" and that the Bible declares "Salvation is of the Jews" (John 4;24). This work tells us that as far as the Gospel record is concerned, Jesus spoke from "within Judaism" and never abandoned His "ancestral faith". The book also describes how a prime facet of Old Testament/Jewish thought was the promise and fulfilment of Biblical prophecy in relation to the coming Messiah. Something which the earliest Christians, themselves Jews, found resolved in the person of Jesus Christ. The book educates the reader regarding how this Jewishness affects our understanding of the teachings of Christ. The book also proceeds to study the centuries of "de-Judaization" that followed the early Church, plus a study of the negative consequences resulting from the Church being "severed" from it's Jewish roots. The correct Scriptural interpretation of the Church being "grafted in" to it's Jewish roots is explained in some detail. The doctrine of "Replacement Theology" is also examined, wherein the Church is cited as being the "new Israel" and usurping the Biblical promises pertaining to the Jewish people and nation. A process that is described as developing from what was initially the de-Judaization of the Church into the concept of anti-Semitism itself. All these issues are commendably discussed in the contents of this book in their appropriate context with Scriptural references readily provided. Other sections of this study include a section devoted to understanding "Hebrew thought" plus an analysis of the Church & theological conflict. The book also investigates the Judaeo-Christian heritage to the Holy Land and recognises that Judaism is so embedded in it's relationship to the Land that it is utterly inseparable from it. Jerusalem itself is also examined in a similar context and outlines that Jesus was born into a Jewish family near Jerusalem (Bethlehem, Judea), He later taught there, died there, rose from the dead there, ascended to Heaven from there and said that He would physically return there. (Readers should be aware that whilst the book makes some reference to the present day situation in the Holy Land, it does not delve into the complexities and the political quagmire of the current situation. Indeed, that was never the purpose for this study.) (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-01-17 08:35:29 EST)
