Illus. in full color. "Don't be fooled by the title of this seriocomic ode to success; it's not 'Climb Every Mountain,' kid version. All journeys face perils, whether from indecision, from loneliness, or worst of all, from too much waiting. Seuss' familiar pajama-clad hero is up to the challenge, and his odyssey is captured vividly in busy two-page spreads evoking both the good times (grinning purple elephants, floating golden castles) and the bad (deep blue wells of confusion). Seuss' message is simple but never sappy: life may be a 'Great Balancing Act,' but through it all 'There's fun to be done.'"--(starred) Booklist.

Inspirational yet honest, and always rhythmically rollicking, Oh, the Places You'll Go! is a perfect sendoff for children, 1 to 100, entering any new phase of their lives. Kindergartners, graduate students, newlyweds, newly employeds--all will glean shiny pearls of wisdom about the big, bountiful future. The incomparable Dr. Seuss rejoices in the potential everyone has to fulfill their wildest dreams: "You'll be on your way up! / You'll be seeing great sights! / You'll join the high fliers / who soar to high heights." At the same time, he won't delude the starry-eyed upstart about the pitfalls of life: "You can get all hung up / in a prickle-ly perch. / And your gang will fly on. / You'll be left in a Lurch."
But fear not! Dr. Seuss, with his inimitable illustrations and exhilarating rhymes, is convinced ("98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed") that success is imminent. As long as you remember "to be dexterous and deft. And NEVER mix up your right foot with your left," things should work out. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter |

Oh, the Places You'll Go! is a very good graduation gift, and my traditional gift for such occasions. But in regular bookstores, the cost usually averages at $18. Now, used books are great ideas, usually about $5, but not for graduation gifts. So when these $12 per arrived in perfect NEW condition I was thrilled. Go Amazon.

We use this book as a completion/graduation gift for a summer program for high school students that gives them experience in working at a university-level research project. The program is called SHARP. The book edition is hardback with a color-embossed jacket, so it will hold up as a keepsake, and the kids use it as they would a yearbook--collecting autographs and keep-in-touch messages from their friends and teachers.

I've always appreciated the way Dr. Suess can speak to adults. This is a classic graduation book, and that's where I got my copy.
But it's still very much kid-friendly and just as inspirational to them as to anyone. This is a story about chane and going for it, with a healthy dose of realism that reminds us that the world is not a fairy tale and that bad things will happen but that they are still no reason to give up. This wonderful Dr. Seuss book is our favorite gift for graduates from High School. It is simple in its language, but very thoughtful in its message. It discusses successes as well as bumps in the road, which is a true picture of life. It is encouraging, and fun, the artwork is delightful. Read it from cover to cover, enjoy it, and think.

I purchased this book for my daughter and three of her friends for high school graduation. They all loved the book. The book was very fitting for these girls as they all did extremely well in high school. It's a cute story and one I enjoyed reading as well. I highly recommend it. The books arrived in 7 days. The price was much better ordering on line and I received free shipping.

Excellent gift for a highschool or college graduation. Dr. Seuss may have written this as a childrens book but I think it is excellent for a young adult. I always give this as a graduation gift. If you haven't ever read it, you should and you will see why it is a perfect gift for a young adult!

Oh, the Places You'll Go! is an uplifting and encouraging book describing a major life lesson that is applicable to children and adults alike. The book is a promoter of focusing on the positive and moving quickly past the negative. The narrator addresses the reader through the small boy that appears in almost every illustration. Your life is seen and addressed through the eyes of this small boy. The book describes many situations that one may encounter in life, such as facing an unfamiliar place or situation, Seuss questions whether the reader will stop, or will they go on. He comments that life may be confusing, but waiting for others to control your life will not allow you to achieve the "places that you'll go". He encourages his reader to be ready for anything, and to not be afraid to be out there alone. Continuing on will allow you to succeed, even through the most difficult dilemmas you may face.
Teachers could use the text as an example of well-crafted poetry, an example of how to incorporate many different text qualities into poetry. This book would be best to use when introducing poetry, to discuss how that even though it is a poem, with poetic qualities - poems still contain the conventions and styles that traditional stories and writings contain. This book also has varying examples of metaphors and similes, they are simple, so it is easy for the early elementary student to grasp. Oh the Places You'll Go is a great example of traditional poetry, which can be used in many ways to introduce poetry and rhyme scheme in the classroom. I have to say, who doesn't love Dr. Seuss? My daughter is graduating high school this year...she is going on to be a teacher and in her high school years she has been involved in RIF (Reading is Fundamental) and has "taught" at a local preschool during school class hours. She loves to read to "her kids" and Dr. Seuss is always a favorite. I didn't THINK of this as a Graduation gift, but saw that someone else did and I thought it's the PERFECT gift for her. She loves Dr. Seuss and she loves to read to her kids...this book says it all to her...Oh, the Places You'll Go. I love her so much and don't know what I'll do without her, but...she will go places...she has brains in her head and feet in her shoes...HAPPY GRADUATION BABY.

I love this book. It is honest but hopeful. I have 2 copies of this book. One for my son and one for my daughter. Neither of them know about them. I have been having their teachers sign a little message to them at the end of each school year and will give it to them when they graduate from high school.

Oh, The Places You'll Go is yet another wonderful book written by that genius Dr. Seuss. In this book children are encouraged to explore the world and to avoid letting a bad experience hinder them from exploring more new places and things. Naturally, younger children will also profit from this book as a tool to learn how to read and sound out new words as they increase their vocabulary at the same time. Great!
The book starts by asking children to use their imaginations to think up what the real world might be like out there; and parents can help their children by teaching them about the world out there, too. This sets things up for an exciting and educational discussion between parent and child about the real world out there. Seuss clearly puts the child in the driver's seat when he writes "and YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go." Seuss encourages kids to always strive to explore while being creative and open to new things; Seuss writes that "you'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead." Can you imagine how stimulating that must be to a young child just breaking out of their shell? It's very good. However, Seuss remains honest about life. This book also teaches young children that sometimes they may not like a certain place they've come to but that they should never let that discourage them from going on to bigger and better things once more. The text has great rhyming and the illustrations are wonderful. The hardcover book can withstand accidental attempts to damage it without breaking at all; and the paper quality is rather good, too. Overall, this fine book from Dr. Seuss is indispensable for encouraging young children to explore the world around them and to never quit. Younger children can also benefit from this book as they learn to read and improve their vocabularies. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-27 09:33:12 EST)

I originally purchased this book for my then 5 year old as he was preparing to start Kindergarten. At the time, I really thought it was for kids starting school. It was a wonderful conversation starter to talk to him about all the wonderful things and new experiences he was about to encounter in school.
I then did the same thing with my next child and every now and then when they get low and wonder about their future, I pull this book out and read it with them. This book is great at sparking imagination and letting children know that from time to time they will be left behind or disappointed, but that around the corner something new and unexpected will happen. This book is also wonderful for a graduation gift, whether from high school or college as the message in simple rhymes can do nothing but lift spirits. I highly recommend this book as a keeper! One of the many benefits of teaching young children is you have constant opportunities to stumble across picture book gems, that would surely surpass you, unless of course you have children.
OH, THE PLACES YOU"LL GO! Is a charming book. The afternoon I read it too a bunch of 7 year olds, I was at the bookstore hunting down a copy. I then read it to a 38 year old man. He loved it. Oh the places you'll go is a whimsical look into the journey of being human. Although for children, I think this book is an inspirational, everything-is going to be okay story. I think it would make an excellent University graduation present or a nice pick-me-up gift for a much loved friend or family member going through a bit of a slump. "On and on you will hike. And I know you'll hike far And face up to your problems Whatever they are.." I also love THE WAITING place that Dr.Seuss talks about in this book. I usually feel that Dr. Suess books are perhaps just ¼ too long, I didn't feel that in this case. This is a lovely book. Every child and adult should get themselves a copy. Go Dr. Seuss! I've gifted this book to high school and college grads and I've gifted it to older adults and I'd have to say, I think the full depth and import of this book's important and inspirational message is almost lost on anyone less than 25 years old.
This book came into my life when I was busy making hard choices and having a very difficult time. It was instrumental in lifting me out of a very dark and deep slump. I highly recommend it as a gift for anyone who needs a little hit of joy and light in their life. For a time, I worked as an editor at a Christian magazine. I learned that the children's articles were the most popular articles in our magazine - for both children and adults! The reason was, the simplicity of the children's articles really spoke to the hearts of the adults. That's the beauty part of "The Places You'll Go." The simplicity of this message is easily and readily understood by one and all. Children may enjoy the sing-songy rhythms of the book but adults will appreciate its amazing depth and inspiration. "With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet, You're too smart to go down any not-so-good street. And you may not find any you'll want to go down. In that case, of course you'll head straight out of town." It really is a beautiful manual for life, reduced to 911 words, and expressed in language we can all understand and enjoy. I highly recommend this book. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-23 12:04:37 EST)

I was an adult when i read it, yet i enjoyed it very much! Books for adults are seldom covered with colorful pictures and almost never rhyme. It is a great gift for someone at the crossroads of life, when they feel scared for new beginnings. Life is a journey, and oh! the places we will go!

You thought the good doctor only wrote books for kids...
You probably also thought that both the story lines in the Disney movies were for the children, too... This is a great book for adults, students, and children. It's a wonderful gift for anyone taking a turn in their life. So, if you have not read it recently, get a copy today. And if you have read it, get a copy for a friend who has changed jobs (or even lost a job), been promoted up the ladder, graduated from high school or college, or had another change in their life. Remind them of "The Places They'll Go!" (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-09-05 14:55:21 EST)
