An excellent book, well written by a woman born and raised in Egypt as a Muslim. She was able to come to the US when she was 30.

The most amazing thing is seeing our country from her point of view. Grateful and thankful for the freedoms of the country, she has thrown herself into being an active American. What she had learned in this country about Israel has made to an outspoken supporter.

There are warnings too, her view of terrorism, and the American Muslim community are from a distinctly different perspective.

This is a must read.

Ms. Darwish is an excellent writer. Her first-hand knowledge of jihad and extremist Islam makes the book more than credible. She calls for *TRUE* peace between Arabs, Westerners, Christian, Jew and Muslim. As she states, this can never happen when decent Muslims will say nothing and allow the lunitics to act and speak for them. A MUST read for anyone who wants to begin to understand what is at stake...our freedoms, our very lives...when the lunies run the asylum. Her research is stellar. She uses direct quotes from radical imams, the Koran and many others to prove her point. EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT.

It is difficult to truly understand other cultures and the rise of Jihad in Western Europe and North America. It doesn't help when political correctness seems more important than truth. In this book political correctness takes a back seat to truth. This very brave woman dares to speak when so many, including journalists, do not get to the heart of the matter of why supposedly "moderate" Muslims remain silent when their "religion is being hijacked" and thousands die because of it. Why is North America always to blame for the woes of the world? Why do the Arab nations, so rich in oil, not take responsibility for their own problems? Why do they hate Israel so much when this tiny country has given so much to the world? These were my questions and these are the answers Nonie Darweish answers. Not from a North American perspective, but from one who has lived this culture...IS this culture. A must read for anyone who truly wants to understand.

Born and raised in Egypt under Sharia Law, she learned as a little girl all about hate and fear. She tells her story and how she became an apostate. Which in many ways is comparible to a preditor becoming prey. Nonetheless this very couragous woman did just exactly that. This is a must read for all woman and men world wide, whom are ignorant to the true Islam. Or those whom still think Islam and other faiths are compatible.

This book answered all my questions about the turmoil in the middle east and the futility of trying to make peace with these people. Their mission in life is to see us converted to radical Islam or dead. It makes one wonder when our government is going to get tough enough to irradicate the power these people have to annihilate us on our own shores using the Constitiuion as a cover up to protect themselves. We citizens need to wake up and hold firm to the tenants of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.I've bought 6 more of these books to give to friends to help them understand.

Reading this book is like taking a college course on the Middle East. I can't think of anything left out. Being guided through the past 50+ years by our tour director Miss Darwish, we visit her homeland Egypt and then her relocation in 1970 to the good ol' U.S.A. With her eyes we capture a first hand look into the people, customs and politics of Egypt from the mid-1950's onward. And then as she gravitates to her new homeland, the U.S., we see what she sees for the first time, much of what we here in the states take for granted. The foremost point that her story projects is how she came to the realization that what she had been taught all her life growing up in Egypt was very questionable to say the least, resulting in a new found love and respect for Israel and the Jewish people as well as an appreciation for the American way of life. A secondary point she provides is the observation she shares regarding the radical Islam agenda present today in the U.S. Upon finishing this book I searched for speaking engagements that Miss Darwish gives regularly and will be loaning this book to friends.
What a wonderful, caring, compassionate, intelligent and strong woman Nonie Darish is and I am grateful we have her with us today.

I read this book, well at least the first part well over a year ago. Yes, the beginning is interesting but then she goes the route of George W. Bush/Dick Cheney/Donald Rumsfeld. There is an endorcement from FORMER Senator Rick Santorum of PA which should have told me not to read it.He is the family values guy who lost his Senate seat due to his talking down to women. I put it in the recycle bin since I would never recommend it to anyone.

Nonie Darwish was born and raised in Egypt and Gaza in the era of radicalization under the rule of President Nasser. Living there for 30 years before coming to America, she was brought up in Muslim society that was/is intolerant and oppressive and indoctrinated to hate Jews and infidels. Her own father, a high-ranking intelligence officer headed the "fedayeen" or freedom movement to overthrow Israel. In 1956 he was killed in a counterattack and immediately hailed a Shahid, or martyr, in the plight of jihad which is the highest honor in Islam.

Darwish admits to always having an independent streak that caused her to question things she didn't understand. Especially the intense hatred of Jews. Of course this was highly frowned upon in a culture where free thoughts and opinions were not valued or encouraged and might even get you killed. Needless to say, Darwish didn't understand the depth of indoctrination and hate until she lived in America and was able to see the world through open eyes. Darwish has even become a staunch supporter of Israel and it's right to exist after finally learning the true history. In time, after years of questioning her Muslim faith and the social injustices that faith allowed and valued caused Darwish to leave Islam and embrace Christianity.

Her explainations of Arab culture help the reader understand that logic and reason are not going to help us in trying to reach out to and reform Muslims. For instance, lying and deception are considered HONORABLE traits. Honesty is seen as weakness, stupid and rude! Also, in contrast to our values, Arabs are brought up to NEVER accept responsibility for anything and to blame others..especially the Jews. How can our two worlds co-exist? To quote Darwish "Western-style soul searching or examination of beliefs is almost unheard of in Arab culture. Such behavior would bring about shame and loss of honor. And no subject is more sacred and protected from analysis or criticism than the Koran or Islam. Muslims can get violently angry if that is done." and "Our knowledge of Islam was based on memorization and compliance, and not on study, debate, or asking questions." Taqiyya, lying to protect the image of Islam is mandate by the Koran. This is seen almost daily in newspaper, books, television, lecture halls etc..

Much to her dismay, Darwish began seeing a more radical element of Islam popping up in America. The hatred and violence were now here and openly supported. After 9/11 Darwish realized she must speak out and educate us about the dangers of Islam and show her support for Israel. Sadly, the reality is there are few Americans willing to do the same so to hear Darwish, at great risk, travel the world courageously speaking out is inspiring.

Darwish knew there would be opposition but she had no idea that Americans themselves, especially the liberal left would be so unwilling to heed her warnings. This of course is seen in the media, politicians and universities who are complicit in the radicalization of our country by accepting huge amounts of money from Saudi Arabia to propagate the "peaceful" version of Islam and downplay the reality. I found it very discouraging to learn that Americas supposedly brightest minds on college campuses throughout, are completely closed to the truth having bought into the wrong assumptions and outright lies..

This book will hopefully open some eyes to the truth. Our government, shackled by political correctness, is not going to protect us. It's up to us to arm ourselves with as much accurate information as possible and to spread the word.

An excellent book telling of the culture and society nutured by the Islamic religion. The conclusion one reaches after this book and Bin Ladin's book, Inside the Kingdom: My Life in Saudi Arabia, or comments by John Adams when talking with Abd al-Rahman at the dawn of our country is that this religion requires convertion, submission, or death from all other peoples. It is a totally intolerant religion.

Written in a style that's quite easy to read, this book is part autobiography and part political opinion. Nonie Darwish compares the life she experienced in Egypt with the life she has in America.

In this quite honest account, she talks of the non-progressive culture and ideology that exists within many Muslim and Middle-Eastern countries, as well as the strong antagonism that they display towards America, Israel and the West. She also talks glowingly of the democracy and values that have served America and the West so well while also describing the danger of having growing numbers of Muslims not assimilating or integrating into American society.

If I have one gripe with the book, it is that there is an obvious lack of criticism for American and Western foreign policy and big business. Balanced writing does not have to mean equal criticism for all parties, for it may not be equally deserved by everyone but America here is painted as some kind of Utopia. Maybe it is for someone who was brought up in Egypt, although I suspect her perspective also has something to do with being raised in an upper class family and that she is a conservative Republican. What criticism there was only extended as far as saying that the West is sometimes not vigilant enough in protecting its borders and culture.

Overall, the book is quite interesting as it teaches us something about the mindset of "others" and reminds us why we should cherish and protect our democratic values. On the other hand, I regularly turned a page expecting to be confronted by a little bit of honest criticsm of the West......but it never really eventuated.

(Hide Review...)  AN INFORMATIVE EXPLANATION...THEN DENIAL
Reviewer Permalink

This is an amazing book. It is a clear explanation of the Islamic religion -- its strengths, its beauty, its magnetism -- followed by a vibrant and heartfelt denunciation of its dysfunction and cruelty. The author of "Now They Call Me Infidel: Why I Renounced Jihad for America, Israel, and the War on Terror," Noni Darwish, presents a riveting account of her early life as a devout Muslim, her rising skepticism, and final metamorphosis into a Christian and advocate for Israel.

Like many others, I have questioned the reported hatred of non-believers, the abuse of women and their rights, the disregard for human life, and the fanaticism of the Muslim faith. How is it that the beauty and lyricism of its holy book, The Koran, be interpreted into so many behavioral extremes? How can any human exhibit the cruelty of Islamic terrorists? Why do American Muslims remain so steadfastly mute on the actions of Islamic terrorists that murdered over 3,000 fellow citizens? Ms. Darwish explains it all with a candor that is refreshing and, I'm sure, extremely personally painful for her.

Reading the book answered many questions in my mind about Islamic behavior and I have no reason to doubt the veracity of the author's words. In fact, I sensed an underlying discomfort in the recounting of the personal events that shaped her transformation. I am certain she wishes there was some other way she could come to grips with the failure of a beloved religion she has had to abandon.

The book did nothing to ease my fears about bigger confrontations to come. The entire environment of hatred and fanaticism that seems to have gripped the world is not going to disappear in the near future. However, Ms. Darwish has expressed a belief that with better understanding and more tolerant acceptances of our differences a better future is in store. By reading her book, a view of a ray of hope can be seen, if faintly.

I have met and had lunch with Nonie Darwish. She gave me a testimonial for my forthcoming book: "Citizen Soldier Handbook: 101 Ways Every American Can Fight Terrorism". She is bright, courageous and insightful. She grew up in Egypt and learned at an early age to hate the Jews. Her father was a high ranking member of Nasser's (before Mubarak) Egyptian Army. was martyred in fighting against Israel. As a result, her family had great `honor' and position. But she started questioning why the Jews were hated. And how this perpetuated sensibility affected her life and the lives of others. Her education at the American University of Cairo opened her eyes to discussion and critical thinking. Even her own people had always considered Egypt a `Muslim' country - even though it was a country conquered by the invading hordes. After all, why is there Egyptian spoken language? She learned that Israel existed long ago and began asking more and more questions. She realized that Arab media was manipulative and excluded the truth.

This book is more than just an autobiographical journey. She is taking us from a place of hatred to a place of understanding. She has had and still gets numerous threats for her writing and speaking. She appreciates America and Israel.

Nonie Darwish is one of the bravest women in the world. She goes where few dare to tread, exposing the hatred embodied in the Muslim world today. Born and raised in a high-society, Egyptian Muslim family, Darwish gives a rare insight into the complex mindset that condones terrorism and applauds honor killings. Darwish discovered the difference in how Americans think, and realized that what fuels Jihad is the indoctrination of young Muslims in hatred and the "evil eye."

This is a fascinating book that will open the minds of complacent Americans to the very real threat of Sharia law over the entire world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has the stamina to educate yourself about why we are fighting the War on Terror. In story form, Darwish gives unparalleled access into the thinking of the Muslim world.

I thought of this book when I saw the TV program "Honor Killing in America." I was somewhat prepared for such a horrifying attitude. The men and some women approve of killing female family members who break the rules set up by men. This is the law of radical Islam which some Muslims want to replace the laws in Western civilization.

The book will give great insight into a world which is often hidden from Western people. Is she trying to scare us? Well, we need the insights she offers from her personal experiences as she moved from hatred to love. We need to understand her fears especially in the light of "honor killings." It would seem that the National Organization for Women would be coming to women's defense on this.

I don't need to repeat what so many other reviews have said. I do highly recommend this as a real eye-opener. She has no reason not to be telling the truth. The negative reviews only clarify the fear these women must feel. I wonder how a woman president would handle "honor killings?"

I have read a number of books on Islam that were written by people who have done a great deal of research and have gained considable knowledge (and that is good; don't misunderstand me). But Mrs. Darwish has written a riveting, firsthand account of life under Islam, dictatorship, hate, deceit, oppression, anger, and envy that I found difficult to put down. A most excellent work--a true eye opener--I wish everyone in America would read it. Too many people have been lulled into complacency by the media, which generally glosses over Islamic atrocities--either from fear or because of the perceived need to be politically correct. She has presented these things in their unvarnished reality and has compared them with what she found in America.

Thank you, Mrs. Darwish, for writing this book and sharing the story of your life in the third world and in America.

In this book, Nonie Darwish traces her life from a childhood spent as the daughter of a Muslim shahid in Egypt to her adult life as a conservative Christian in the United States. This amazing transformation took place because of her insight into the hatred preached by Muslims whose goal in life was to eradicate Israel and the United States. Instead she sought freedom and security in America, a country she has come to love and admire. She shows the Arab culture from the inside and she describes the inhumane treatment of people, especially women, who are under sharia law.
She explains how Muslim customs dehumanize people and cause a breakdown in the family and in society. She feels that her purpose in life is to warn Americans about the dangers of Islam and the true intentions of a culture that is, even now, working its way into America via immigration and influencing our citizens, especially on college campuses. This is an eye-opening book and should be required reading for Americans.
