certainly made me think, most of us cannot imagine life without electricity, but here we have people who learn to manage. I don't think I would have done as well as them.

Three months into the world wide technology outage, the Branning family and their neighbors are beginning to get the hang of surviving. They are bartering for what they need and digging a neighborhood well.
But then they are robbed. Jeff chases after the thieves and discovers they are four children, siblings, who have been living alone for months. Against their better judgment, the Brannings feel compelled to care for these kids. Where is their mother? And will the Brannings be able to feed these extra mouths? If I were viewing this series as a mystery series, I'd be highly disappointed. While there are some mysteries surrounding the kids, they develop in fits and starts. And the climax of that story is pretty weak. Instead, this is a novel about survival and what humans will do when faced with the end of our civilization. As a result, it is fascinating and page turning. I had a hard time putting the book down. The characters are real, and I found myself asking if I would have the faith and compassion to respond as they did multiple times over the course of the novel. This book relies heavily on the events of the first in the series. There is a recap and character guide in the first few pages, so you could jump in here if you needed to. But I'd advise you to read them in order. And there are some great develops as far as the overall story goes in this book that made me look forward to the third. This is another challenging and captivating novel from a great writer. If you want a great read, consider this series. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-07-14 16:36:32 EST)

In this second book Terri Blackstock continues her story of a world thrown into chaos by way of a "starpluse" which has rendered the use of all modern technology useless. Terri Blackstock explores how our world might "look" if this were to happen, how some grow in their faith, love, and selflessness while others grow in their selfishness, sin, and evil. A griping story of orphaned children in a world devoid of "services" to deal with such an occurance and a family willing to sacrifice everything to help these children, their community, and to serve God in any way he asks.

Spellbinding and interesting! Safe to listen to with older kids in the car too! Love the fact that the family is living out their faith and that the daughter struggles with being bound to a non-believer. We couldn't wait to get back in the car and hear what was next. (Caution: a few scenes have drug use, gun use)

She writes wonderful books, but this series is an eye opener and a situation we should all consider.

Terry Blackstock's first part, Last Light was very good. BUT, part 2, Night Light, is a flip-flip-flip page turner. There is no fowl language. I can't wait to read parts 3 & 4.

The blackout story continues in the second book in the Restoration series. The town is beginning to adapt to an lifestyle without electricity. It is like living in the middle ages again, with the people having to discover new ways to survive. The Banning family has managed to create a semi-comfortable life in this new world. They have food, will soon have water, shelter, and most importantly each other. However not everyone has it this lucky, as the reader is introduced to a group of siblings trying to fend for themselves without their mother. The two groups clash with a battle about what it takes to truly survive in this new world.
Reading about the filth that the children had to live in made me really uncomfortable at times. It's really amazing how we take just a working toilet for granted. This book pretty much explains survival of the fittest. Only the people who lived in communities where there was some sense of order was able to live a semi-normal life while others were forced in extreme poverty and disarray. At times I sided with the children because they were just trying to survive, but then I'd side with the Bannings because they had worked hard for their food and didn't deserve for it to get stolen. It was really scary reading about how people will take advantage of others in desperate times, even children just to get food or other supplies. Aaron, even though sometimes his actions were wrong, had the right intentions for his siblings, putting his family first before everything. I felt that was such a parallel to Deni in the first book, she put everything but her family as her primary focus. The only thing I found irksome is that everyone forgives each other really quickly even for doing terrible things to them. I just felt it a little unreal in such a time like that. Other than that, this was another thrilling read, another deep thinker of a book. Looking forward to when the next book comes out. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-06-29 06:05:32 EST)

Having been "in the dark" following Hurricane Rita, I really identified with the story line. I didn't think Terri could top the first one in the series. Wrong! There are a lot of life-lessons to be learned through the series. Frighteningly realistic, extremely eye-opening, and the great story line continues. Well done! (We have even used some of the tips to prepare for our next "in the dark" experience)

The first book in this series is so good, I wasn't sure how Terri Blackstock could top it. But she did. She really managed to flesh out some of the characters a little more, and give us some real insight into their personalities, hopes, and dreams. I like the way she's making the character Deni grow up right before our eyes. She's becoming someone I'd like to know instead of someone I'd like to throttle, like in the first book... LOL
The part of the story surrounding the four children was even emotionally difficult to read because of the realism. (But don't let that stop you!) The older brother is another character she fleshed out quite well. As always, I would recommend any book by Terri Blackstock. If you're looking for realistic adventure/drama that is clean and edifying to read, she's your author. I appreciate the way she always weaves in some strong spiritual growth into her character's lives. I'm looking forward to future books in this series! Terri Blackstock has done it again. This book made me think of the end of time... when we all must come together... trust in God for our needs and know he will provide as he says in scripture. What an awesome book and ending!

I really loved this next book and now can't wait for the third book in this Restoration series. In this book, services and functions improve a bit (using pre-computer technology) and the people become very practical. Concerns of left-behind children, etc. come into the picture.
Excellent series and kind of comforting to know we can survive a crisis of this type. (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-08-25 03:51:52 EST)

These two books are so well written, I would find myself thinking, "I want to read some more, too bad it is dark and there is no power", and related things. I cannot get enough of this author and these books. A must read for anyone who loves mysteries, real-like scenarios (the what ifs), and Christian Fiction in general. I have not finished Night Light and already cannot wait for the next one!!!

"NIGHT LIGHT" is the second book in author Terri Blackstock's current "RESTORATION" series. It is a truly great sequel to her compelling "LAST LIGHT," which launched this gripping saga of what might happen in the event that this earth were to suddenly, and inexplicably, lose its sources of power and communications...no electricity, no telephones, few operational motor vehicles...all of our 'taken-for-granted' conveniences stripped from our lives--with no idea as to when, or if, they will ever be reinstated. Will today's generation cope as well, having lost these 'entitlements,' as the generations before us functioned without ever having, nor expected, marvels such as those to which we've grown accustomed? And how is God perceived during such a time of crisis? Is He indifferent to our problems, or might this be a way for Him to capture our attention, when some have been oblivious to the ruler of our universe, having been lulled into a state of complacency as we've relied more and more upon technology as our source of power and problem-solving? As I wrote when reviewing "LAST LIGHT," those who have read any of Terri Blackstock's more than two-dozen books can attest to the undeniable fact that she is truly an extraordinary writer. Her suspenseful novels meet or exceed the best of this genre, while remaining true to her deeply held Christian faith (her books are always '...lovingly dedicated to the Nazarene'). We eagerly look forward to the third "RESTORATION" novel...and all of Ms. Blackstock's future books!
