New Moon (The Twilight Saga, Book 2)

Legions of readers entranced by Twilight are hungry for more and they won't be disappointed. In New Moon, Stephenie Meyer delivers another irresistible combination of romance and suspense with a supernatural twist. The "star-crossed" lovers theme continues as Bella and Edward find themselves facing new obstacles, including a devastating separation, the mysterious appearance of dangerous wolves roaming the forest in Forks, a terrifying threat of revenge from a female vampire and a deliciously sinister encounter with Italy's reigning royal family of vampires, the Volturi. Passionate, riveting, and full of surprising twists and turns, this vampire love saga is well on its way to literary immortality.

What a disapointment!!! I absolutely adored Twilight, but i had to wrestle my way through New Moon! It started out strong, but started going down hill as soon as edward, the bipolar vampire, left Bella, the drab and dull spoiled brat. stephenie meyer had a chance for some real character development by having bella overcome her dependance on edward, but no, the little development bella made was quickly vanquashed by the return of her beloved vampire. bella is absolutey pathetic. her entire being is based on some guy!!! besides spending all of eternity with edward, she has no ambitions, dreams, or even slightly inteligent ideas!! im 13 and i have to say, thats not a message i enjoyed recieving. all and all, a horrid book with an even worst message. honestly, bella is the worst role model a teenage girl could ever have!! she should just give up on this whole mythological creatures riff and marry mike newton. at least that would be a bit of a surprise!!!

I liked the first book in the series (Twilight) and as soon as I finished it I went out and bought New Moon. It was immensely disappointing. Bella is incredibly boring, apathetic and acts like a brat through the entire book. The Jacob Black plot was SO obvious, no person with half an iota of intelligence would have taken as long as Bella to figure out. I just wanted to get to the end so it would be over, not because I much cared what happened to her or Edward. Can't say I like a character that spends an entire novel moping and takes a guy back the first chance she gets even though he treated her like dirt (for her own good, of course...so stupid). I won't bother wasting my money on the third book. I may get it from the library. Just how many books are supposed to be in this "Saga"? I do hope Meyer has planned and plotted a solid storyline for future books with a good beginning, middle and end. This one was clearly a mess with horrible pacing, repetitive writing and no plot.

I loved this book as well. It was really difficult to read because it didn't feel as happy as Twilight. But it was full of tough choices and that is representative of life. So while most people liked this book less, it was equally significant as far as the story line and character development are concerned. It kept the page turning even faster as the drama continued. It's amazing how the author thinks of NEW ways to keep us in suspense.

Suspenseful page-turner! Yeah, it's kind of like a soap opera, maybe even a little Jerry Springer; the vampire-werewolf-human love triangle is pretty crazy! But the craziness is what makes this story so good, because you don't know what to expect. It is truly an adventure! More importantly, what girl doesn't want to read about being special and adored?!

(Hide Review...)  Every Bit as Enjoyable as Twilight

Stephenie Meyer lit the publishing world on fire with her remarkable debut, Twilight, where we were introduced to Bella Swan and her vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen. After reading and loving every minute of Twilight I was anxious to dive into New Moon to see what awaited this unlikely couple.

New Moon shifts gears early on and it doesn't take long to figure out that this story is all about Bella and Jacob Black. Edward is an integral part of this story, but his character is absent for most of the book. Instead, Meyer focuses the story on the friendship between Bella and Jacob that began in the first book. As Bella spends more time with Jacob she begins to notice that something isn't quite right with him. When she finally figures out what is going on she is floored by the drastic change of events. Having a vampire for a boyfriend is strange enough, but it seems that Bella Swan's best friend just happens to be a werewolf.

New Moon is a fun, mesmerizing tale that is every bit as enjoyable as Twilight. This time around we are treated with Meyer's take on the werewolf genre and her werewolves are just as intriguing as the vamps. The tension slowly builds as we learn that werewolves and vampires are fierce enemies, which only makes Bella's dilemma even more excruciating.

Stephenie Meyer continues to wow me with her addicting storytelling and her uncanny ability to make me care about these characters. There is something so authentic and engaging about these novels that makes them absolutely impossible to put down. I can see why young adults have devoured them, but I'm also finding out how enjoyable this series is for adults as well. You can label the Twilight series YA fiction, or teen paranormal romance, or even horror love story. I'll call it what it really is: stellar storytelling on every level.

The stage is wonderfully set for Eclipse and once again I can't wait to dive in.

COVER.....the only thing good about this book! I have honestly never read anything more poorly written in my life. It is totally unbelievable, underdeveloped and unimaginative. Even the characters' emotional reactions which an author must draw from their own are not believable! However...the cover is so beautiful that I tore it off to keep before I threw the rest into the garbage. Maybe it is meant to be a teen read but I really can't recommend this book to anyone. I guess there may be another plus....if this writing can get published we all have a chance! The perfect example for why we should not judge a book by it's cover....ever again!

I thought Twilight was good, but I think New Moon is great. Whereas I do not think there is much meat to Meyer's characters, her plots are genius. She seems to have a natural gift for changing direction unexpectedly with artfulness and grace. Often you get an inkling of what is coming, but you never quite know just how its going to happen. This builds frenzied anticipation. She masterfully pens her action scenes so that your mind can fill in the blanks with ease. Its not Harry Potter, but it certainly leaves you wanting more.

I'm a 29 year old mom and could not put this book down. It was very well written and kept you on you on the edge of your seat for the entire ride. I cried & laughed with Bella. I do see the darkness other reviewers refer to, but I think that what makes it great. What teenager or adult for that matter doesn't feel most of these roller coaster emotions at some point. The author did an awesome job at taking you though these dark feelings but she brings you out to the happy side in the end. A very good paranormal romance in my opinion. I know so many reviewers think this series is for silly teenage girls only but I'm an avid reader of all kinds of fiction and enjoyed this book immensely. I hope the rest of the series lives up to the first 2 books. Keep up the great work Ms. Meyer!

If you're all for team Edward, then this book's not really for you. If you're all for team Jacob, then you'll love it.
As for me, I was all for team Edward. That'll explain why I read this book a tad bit slower.
The flaw of it is that one character disappears for most of the book. Other than that, it was another great addition to the Twilight series.

In reality, this book only deserves a rating of three stars...at most. However, the "Twilight" series is to me what bad romance novels are to some people: very poorly written books with storylines that manage to pull me in every time. Stephenie Meyer really isn't much of a writer, but I love vampire books and can't seem to tear myself away from the romance between Bella Swan, an 18-year-old mortal, and Edward Cullen, a 17-going-on-107-year-old vampire with a heart of gold.

"New Moon" is the second book in the series, and it starts off very promising, but then tapers off a little more than halfway through. While attending a birthday party given in her honor at the Cullen residence, Bella cuts her arm and causes Edward's entire family to desperately restrain themselves from feasting on her. This sets off a chain of events that result in Edward and the rest of the Cullens leaving Washington (and Bella) behind. That's right: Edward tells Bella that he's done with her and never wants to see her again. Obviously, poor Bella doesn't take this information very well, and spends most of the book in a catatonic state. Eventually she manages to recover a bit as a result of her growing friendship with Jacob Black. However, Jacob has a dangerous secret of his own, and it also appears that Bella's days of attracting vampires are far from over.

I didn't enjoy this book nearly as much as "Twilight," mainly because Edward was hardly in it at all. The Bella/Jacob thing was interesting for the first 300 pages or so, but then the book kind of started to drag on. Still, I was very much drawn into the story, and even though "New Moon" was disappointing, I'm still eager to read "Eclipse" and "Breaking Dawn" so I can find out how this odd little bloodsucking romance ends.

The series of which this book is a part reads as a twisted soap opera. The heroine likes cuddling up to a stone hard, un-dead, icy-skinned, but somehow attractive guy that no one -including her father and the population of the town where they live - seems to notice is just a bit unusual. In fact, the girl decides she would like to join her chilly boyfriend in his vampire existence. The book's high rating can likely be attributed to its appeal to pre-teen/early teen girls who are intrigued by bad boys and other fascinating dangers. The author passes on the opportunity to address the several analogous social issues that could give interesting depth to the novel, for instance: to accept (or not) the outcasts among us, moral justification for morally unacceptable acts, or the attraction to danger suffered by many of our young people. This book does not share insight, nor is it of a quality to warrant purchasing it.

(Hide Review...)  What I would give for at least one description...
Reviewer Permalink
I found this book to be somewhat interesting, but my biggest complaint is the lack of imagery. This book has so much potential for beautiful descriptions, but the way she just introduces places and continues the story does not do the settings justice. Indian Reservations have so much character and breath-taking views that it should be a sin to not spend time describing it to the readers that may have never gotten the chance to see one. Also the lack of description of other characters keeps me from connecting to them. Other than the odd action of mussing with their hair or comment on the paleness of the skin we really don't get a chance to see these characters. There is no image to go with them; the characters remain simply names.

Also, there seems to be a lack of personal traits and idiosynchrasies. I mean chracters are nice, nosy, happy, etc, but they don't seem to posses any little perk, so to speak, that makes them... well, them. I think things such as these would make the characters more relatable. It would also bring them to life and make them more well-rounded, for as of now they are fairly one-demensional characters.

Not since Linda Lael Miller's gothic Vampire Love novels have I picked up a book so worthy of reading. I have been so disappointed since reading the final 4th installment of "Into the Night" because there were no more forthcoming. I didn't even realize I had the first two of Stephanie Meyer's Vampire Love Stories. I'm only on chapter 3 and I can't put it down! Thank you so much for giving me hope again and captivating me with your wonderful vampire love story. It takes me back in time again and with all the hustle and bustle of work, world woes and busy schedules, it's breathtaking to be able to escape, even briefly, into a world of fantasy and excitement. I can't wait to finish Twilight and start New Moon. I'm so glad there are still three to go! Thank you again! Kudo's to you Ms. Meyer!

Does Stephenie Meyer get paid by the word? This book is BORING!!! I guess the story line has merit; it just takes forever to get there. The first three quarters of the book could be eliminated. The only character that has any substance is Jacob; Bella needs to get over herself. If you want to fall asleep you could use this book.

While I thoroughly enjoyed New Moon, it cannot be said that the book is without kinks. Bella's story is captivvating as always, but there can be points at which she is painfully unaware of the world around her. Some of her blindness about both Edward's motivations as well as Jacob's circumstances make her a bit boring at times if you are an attentive reader. Some crucial plot points slip by her for chapters while readers are left to wait for her to wake up.

This is not to say that this book is not a good one. Giving a fuller view to the well-written vampire contoversy, it is worth the time and money to read - or in some cases, devour - a copy.

A final comment to Kindle readers like myself would be that there are a few errors in this book. Dropped quotations, comma splices, and conjoined words can all be found multiple times. I sincerely hope that a Kindle editor gets on these issues soon, as they can make reading difficult and confusing. Beyond that, it is a pleasure to read on the Kindle as much as any other novel.

I was a little worried about New Moon....that it wouldn't live up to the first book. I had no need to worry! Stephenie did a fabulous job. I couldn't imagine going through what Bella went through when Edward walked away, and I don't think it was a normal teenage sob-fest, but an actual physical reaction to losing something that is like life itself. I read reviews that say they were frustrated whit Bella for her reaction, but I think it fits perfectly. I think it was a good move on the authors part to have this momentary separation between the two main characters. Bella had a chance to do things she wouldn't have done other wise (a little adventure is always good for us klutzes!), she became better friends with Jacob (which is vital to the story) and it proved that Edward and Bella have to be together or life is unbearable. I couldn't put it down and I am anxiously waiting for the third book, which I am sure is going to be fantastic. Read it and love it!

The easiest thing to compare New Moon to and the entire Twilight series is fanfiction. Fanfiction is entirely inulgent for the readers and gives them exactly what they want while making them laugh and fall in love and go a little crazy. It's not the most complex, but thoroughly enjoyable and a delight. Nevertheless, this novel is powerful in the author's means to capture the passage of time as well as pain that does not exist the same way as in the first of this series (Twilight). Although perhaps not the most loved novel in the series, New Moon thoroughly captures teenage angst, drama, love, friendship, and so much more. It may seem a little like a soap opera for more mature eyes, but I think we've all been there. High school is drama. When in high school, you may realize it to a certain extent but this novel reflects from wiser eyes but with the essence of what one can understand from the epicenter of teenager-hood. A lovely second and lead-in to the third, it engulfed me the first time and changed my perspective on the series and characters completely the second time around. It's worth reading once to indulge and, apparently, worth reading a second time as well.

I have to admit, my expectations were high. After reading Twilight, I was very excited to see where the story of Edward and Bella would go next. I once had a creative writing teacher, and he would always say, "It's not about putting the lovers together, it's about keeping them apart." Stephanie Meyer has that concept down, but I think it ends there. I kept on reading the book with frustration.

I felt like most of the novel (up until Alice's arrival in Forks) was pure filler - Stephenie Meyer's way of setting up the climax. In my opinion, it was too much. WE GET IT. Edward left to keep her safe, Bella was miserable without him. And then Jacob comes along?

Honestly, I kept of waiting for Jacob's character to have a more significant role at the very end. Every time Bella was pondering about Jacob I was rolling my eyes. Perhaps it was the lack of Edward in this book that put me off (my favorite character in the series by far - I wanted to see what he was doing!). I felt like Stephenie Meyer was trying to get me to like Jacob too much, and I ended up resenting his character more (especially towards the end).

While this story didn't have the "dazzle" that Twilight had for me (sorry had to do it), it was an okay read. And I am hoping Eclipse is a stronger read than New Moon.

Poor Bella Swan - first her vampire boyfriend dumps her, leaving her depressed and suicidal, and then her best friend turns out to be a werewolf. Life sucks sometimes, right?

New Moon is a disappointing follow-up to Meyer's much more entertaining Twilight. Teenage Bella, now 18, demonstrates even less self-esteem than she did in the first novel when vampire Edward Cullin decides it's just too dangerous for him and his family to remain in her life. This is the typical romance novel break-up - "I don't want you anymore," he tells her, and she believes him. Which begins four months of near-catatonic depression with Bella lifelessly going about her daily activities while the huge metaphoric hole Edward has ripped inside her chest grows ever larger and more painful. This girl has no life without her man.

So, of course, what does she do? She gravitates to another man, this time 16-year-old Jacob Black, an American Indian boy she knew as a child. The relationship between Bella and Jacob is actually the best part of New Moon - I liked her when she was with him (his upbeat, warm, fun attitude brought something out in her that was missing before - namely a personality!). The only negative is that while Jacob falls in love with Bella, she still can't get over Edward, the jerk who dumped her and disappeared. So a whole lot of the middle section of the novel is about Bella's guilt over leading Jacob on. She goes so far as to imagine herself as Juliet in Shakespeare's play, with Edward as Romeo and Jacob as Paris. She wonders whether Juliet would have been justified in hooking up with Paris if Romeo had run out on her - even if she didn't love him, wouldn't it be OK? Because after all, what's a girl without a guy? Absolutely nothing!

To make matters more confusing for poor Bella, it gradually becomes clear that Jacob is a werewolf, the natural enemy of vampires like Edward. Which means Bella now has two monsters in love with her - no easy answers for this girl! Edward returns about ¾ of the way through the novel and Bella makes her choice (come on, it's no contest - who wouldn't pick a gorgeous, ice cold, emotionless, rock hard vampire over a hot-blooded, gorgeous, sensitive werewolf . . . well, OK).

New Moon isn't as much fun to read as Twilight was. I was hoping Bella would develop into a well-rounded character, especially after Edward leaves her, but the devastating depth of her depression reveals that she really is nothing without this man she loves. It was hard seeing her so ready to accept Edward back into her life after he ran out on her so cruelly - I wanted so much for her to stand up for herself and hold this guy accountable for his actions. As long as Bella continues to see herself as a disaster on legs, there's no hope for a better outcome for her. I cling to my belief that it IS possible to love someone and still hold onto your true self. But for Bella to do that, she needs to HAVE a true self in the first place. Before she so blithely gives up her soul and her humanity for an eternity with Edward, I hope she discovers who she really is.

She kept encouraging me to read them. I listened to the audio CD for Twilight that I checked out from the library to get a taste for the book to see if I liked it. It started rather slowly and I thought - "how could this teenage love affair with a vampire possibly fill up 4 volumes!!" I can't take another chapter of it. It was then, that the plot took a surprising suspenseful turn. I was riveted. So, I immediately bought the audio CDs for New Moon and the 3rd book Eclipse. New Moon again started a little slow getting into the story, but it too became exciting and intense. It was thoroughly enjoyable.

(Hide Review...)  "New Moon" is definintely no "Twilight"!

First, let me say that I love fantasy stories. Vampires are my favorites, and I absolutely LOVED "Twilight." I thought it was written for a young adult audience but that it had a wider appeal. I read it in a day and thought Bella was a nice, smart girl who hadn't exactly lucked out in the parent department. Then she hooked up with Edward and their relationship was sweet, tinged with an edge of danger thanks to Edward's vampirism and Bella's enticing scent.

I ordered "New Moon" the day I finished "Twilight" and waited with barely concealed impatience. Then I got it and began to read and waited, and waited and waited... for something to happen.

I thought Edward's confession that he doesn't love Bella rang false. I couldn't see how she could possibly believe that. Ok, I told myself, just wait. Unlike many of the other reviewers, I didn't mind the reminders of the hole Bella felt. I actually identified with that. I didn't, however, identify with wanting to die because some guy left me. Not only was it weak, but it was a terrible way to write a character aimed at teens. No guy is worth killing yourself for!

I like Jacob. He's interesting, sweet and he and Bella have some good chemistry. He also makes sure he's there to take care of Bella when she does stupid things, unlike Edward, who just leaves her alone, knowing what she's doing. Jacob's a much better "person" than Edward, even if he isn't as beautiful.

Unfortunately, nothing happens during the middle 300 pages of the book. Then, finally Alice comes and she and Bella go to Italy to rescue Edward. Too bad it was boring.

I wish I could say I liked this book, but the reality is that I was extremely disappointed, both in the lack of plot and in Bella's suitability as a heroine. In this book, she's not someone I would ever want to emulate. Or even be friends with.

My recommendation is to read "Twilight" and stop there.

She has a gift of writing to the heart and soul. This is a bit of a sci-fi without being just weird; a bit of a romance novel without smut. Stephenie crosses the age barriers with this Young Adult book that women everywhere have found to be addictive. It's about the kind of love and devotion we all crave but she does a great job portraying a smart, assertive young woman with values any parent would be proud of. This is a book you can read with your teenage daughters and enjoy a good discussion about it. How often can you say that? Or read it as a book group with other women - it's a fun, escape from reality story with enough mystery to keep you turning pages long after "lights out."

My daughter has been reading this sags with a lot of excitement. She is not much of a reader but she can't seem to put these down. My daughter is 16 years old and while I don't keep her in a bubble I do try to keep her away from things that are to adult for a teen. This sage has that. There is romance but not sex, it has danger and intrigue but not gore. This sage is well done.

I am not an avid book reader but my friends kept telling me to read this series. Many times the first book is excellent and then the rest of the series doesn't live up to the standards of the first book. But in New Moon, there were so many emotions felt as I read and so many surprises that I felt I was really there. The book ended and there was satisfaction and I yearned for more. Stephenie Meyer write's books with such emotion that you want to deglect all your responsibilities and live in the world of Bella, Edward, and Forks, Washington. What more can I say?

Even though there are fewer vampires in this book, it doesn't lack excitement. I was able to somewhat predict how this book would end, but I was still unable to put it down. It was obvious that Edward would return, just not how or why he would come back. Other reviews mentioned that Bella's emotions and her responses to those emotions was strange or immature, but I disagree. People will do strange things when they are in pain, and I'm sure Bella isn't the first teenage girl who's acted out this way. This book wasn't a disappointment at all.

Stephanie Meyer is a fantastic writer! I know this is a young adult novel, and I am not embarrassed to say I am 39 years old and read it in 2 days.
Not one for vampire fare, I was initially skeptical about her series of books about a young vampire and his family in Washington state. But her ability to construct her characters so simply and yet give an astonishing view of how complex they all are reeled me in. The confrontation scenes in the book literally gave me goosebumps.
I am counting the days until the 4th novel in the series is released!

Edward is gone in most of this book!!! If I knew that before I started reading this book, I would never have dreamt that I could have enjoyed it. However, a new intriguing character fills the Edward void nicely. Jacob Black added a light, playful element into this series that was desperately needed - it was getting a little dark and serious. One noticeable thing that I love about Meyer's writing is her descriptions of her characters; she is very precise. Describing Jacob as Bella's sun is just plain sweet. One foreseeable yucky side note: I found the aspect of Bella falling apart because Edward left very touching and heartbreaking, but a little melodramatic. I know that's because I'm 27, so I'll give Meyer that. BUT, I'm not sure that it's the right message for girls who are in her target market (life after a breakup is utter depression, near death, screaming crying for months, etc). Breaking up is hard to do...but for real.....Other than that, I pretty much loved this one as well. (Still not as much as Twilight, though).

I heard so many people say this wasn't their favorite book, I think it may be mine ..I love the natural and beautiful way this handles break up. What woman or girl hasn't been there. I enjoyed the development of the werewolves. The contrast of the two groups. I like the Jacob's Bella she is a lot more independant, more positive. Too bad he isn't the one. I eagerly await Breaking Dawn.

(Hide Review...)  Not the best book for Edward Lovers...

Like Bella and everyone else, I fell in love with Edward in Twilight, only to be confounded by his coldness and then disappearance in New Moon. Having read a few reviews prior to starting, I was preparing for a disappointing book in which the Cullens aren't the main characters and many fans didn't seem to like the werewolf storyline. But I'm going to admit how surprisingly enjoyable, despite Edwards absence, I found New Moon to be. Yes, Bella spends the majority of the time in a catatonic or melodramatic state. And yes, the story is brutally slow at times with way too many adjectives and Bella's endless mental gymnastics. But Mrs. Meyers knows what she is doing, and she writes the character of Jacob Black to perfection. He's more a real boy than Edward will ever be, and with him you get to see a side of Bella that she often doesn't show for fear of embarrassing/injuring herself. He adores her, but doesn't put her up on a pedestal or in a glass case the way Edward seems to. After reading Twilight, I was definitely an Edward fan and couldn't ever see how Bella could fall for Jacob, but after reading New Moon, I'm not so sure anymore. In one respect, either guy is not the ideal; to be with Edward she has to become a vampire and all the problems that causes, and though she could stay human with Jake, there is always the possibility that he could maul her. But Jacob and Bella seem to have this connection that won't go away either, despite her love for Edward. I am reading Eclipse now, and it will be interesting to see who wins the fight for her heart.

And for all those readers who don't get why these guys fall over Bella, an "ordinary girl", remember it is from her perspective and that she wouldn't sound nearly so interesting if she was all full of herself. Maybe she doesn't see herself as clearly as others see her.

I never write reviews. Never. But I am so dissapointed. I had to write a review for this book because through reading it I thought I'd much rather pluck my eyes out then be forced to continue on. This book is not a romance novel. I LOVE romance novels, Love them! I love romance movies. The first book Twilight was ok, I would even go so far as to say pretty good. But Stephenie Meyers writing, her describing every itsy bitsy ridiculous detail, (an idea of what I mean) "I placed the lasagna in the glossy microwave oven and watched it spin slowly around on the heated plate filing the house with smell of cooking tomatoes" (this is not a real quote, but pretty close to the torture of giving many* many* pointless details. GET TO THE POINT!! AAAGGGH! Now take that formula and add it to the second book "NEW MOON" which does not have Edward in it until the end, and add it to the fact that Bella seriously becomes deeply and horribly annoying! I found I kept rolling my eyes every time she spoke. She was depressing, childish, spoiled, a major USER (leading on Jacob) I AM SOOOOO SICK OF HER IN GENERAL and sick of HER CONSTANTLY FALLING DOWN, CUTTING HERSELF, HITTING HER HEAD, POSSIBLY FAINTING, PEOPLE QUICK GET THIS GIRL A HELMET!!! SHE SHOULD WEAR IT AT ALL TIMES!! She has nothing going for herself, why does everyone like her? They never say what is actually special about her especially if she is so plain. Why if Jacob is truly her best friend, would she lead him on and use his adoration of her to get him to do favors for her like fix the motorcycle. How can I be happy about Edward ad Bella when I can't stand Bella? I am lucky as I did not actually have to sit and read this book like others, as I had it on my IPOD, however it was equal torture for me as many of the hours I spent daydreaming and ignoring the story completly. This was truly a bad book. I am unsure if I like the series at all. It seems as though Stephenie meyer kept a thesauraus right next to her and used every word out of it just to sound more educated (it came off annoying) The good news is the Twilight movie looks great and I will bet $1000.00 it will be better than the book. (I usually always love the books better than the movies, not the case here) I can pretty much guarantee that. Skip the books wait for the movie.
