I was asked to write a review of this book. I think Susun is a sensitive, lovely writer. She set my mind at ease through her understanding of menopause. I have had different opinions from different gynocologists, some scary, but she let me know what to look for so that I can take charge of my own health. I am taking her recommendations that relate to my circumstance with confidence and will be able to know its effectiveness as the years go on.

As soon as you reach menopause things start going haywire. I went thru it with nary a hitch as soon as I turned 50. I thought, "What's the big deal?" But now, at 54, I find I have osteosporous and high cholesterol. Well, who would have thought something called horsetail could help the bones! I read that in this book and started ordering some (after I figured out it came in pills and I didn't have to start yanking the tails off a horse). But the thing in here that really got me was about calcium. I have had leg cramps and restless legs for years and there's nothing over the counter that seemed to help, except quinine which you can't get unless you have had malaria. This book says if you take about 1500 mg a day, it helps that. I was skeptical as I have always been skeptical about taking any vitamins or minerals...but it works! After taking calcium for just a few days, I could tell the difference. Why doesn't doctors tell you this when you complain of this problem? The only thing I didn't agree with in book was the author doesn't recommend mammograms because she thinks the radiation can cause cancer after enough of them. I agree but disagree also. I'm not sure I want to go this far in my own self treatment. I've known too many women who died of breast cancer to agree with her totally. It's a great book though and has lots of helpful hints. I now spend a lot of time in the vitamin section of the store after ignoring that section for years. I actually do feel better taking them.

A couple months ago, I was having a conversation with my mother. I mentioned some of the health issues I was having. She looked at me, leaned over, and then in a hushed voiced said that she hated to break it to me but I was having pre-menopausal symptoms.

How could this be happening to me? I'm not old. I'm not ready to get facial hair, brittle bones, and happily retire with my cats.

It was then that I remembered Susun and her Wise Woman series of books. I have read several of her books and absolutely adored them. Susun has a way of making sense of disease, as a normal part of our spiritual and psychological growth.

Without a doubt New Menopausal Years has armed me with information and a whole new perspective. My life doesn't have to include hormone injections, crazy mood swings, or adverse signs of aging. I now see this new phase of my life as an opportunity to take better care of myself and focus on the things I want to do with my life.

I did not like this book and thought it was very wacky. First of all, I did not appreciate the author telling me to think of myself as a crone because I am going through/ in menopause. The writing style was silly-with each chapter beginning with an older voice telling you how you should feel about all the changes going on. It was like a fairy tale. I can not say how accurate the information she gave for vitamins and herbs was but I didn't like when she said never have your ovaries removed and then didn't follow up about what would happen once they are removed. She is very anti hormone and while they may not help some women, they may be the right thing for others. The book goes overboard on natural remedies and does not supply any scientific or medical information to back up her claims. I'm glad I didn't buy this book-instead I took it out from the library. Read this book with a critical mind and don't accept it as truth. It's interesting but I don't believe everything in it.

An award finalist for ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year, New Menopausal Years The Wise Woman Way: Alternative Approaches for Women 30-90 is an introduction to dealing with myriad problems resulting from menopause, preferrable without relying on medicines but rather natural nutritional remedies and supplements. Newly revised and expanded with 100 additional pages on thyroid health, problems with hair, fertility after forty, memory problems, fibromyalgia and more, New Menopausal Years is an excellent preparation and problem-solving guide that taps directly into the experience of women, for women. New Menopausal Years does not replace the diagnosis, prescriptions, or treatment of a professional doctor for serious health problems, but rather shines as a resource for preventative nutritional and herbal advice, and tips for alleviating common discomforts.

I teach workshops on yoga and menopause and this is one of the books I recommend most enthusiastically to women going through the Change. Susun Weed describes menopause as a metamorphosis, a complete change at the cellular level, when a woman changes from one person to another, similar to the dramatic change that occurs during puberty. Susun and other holistic healers who have studied the ancient women's mysteries remind us of the power and initiation potential of the two life events unique to women: menstruation and menopause. She views the menopausal years as the years of transformation from a potential mother to Wise Woman elder or crone. I read the first edition of this book during my perimenopausal years back in the 90's and now at age 55, officially on my postmenopausal journey, I continue to find little nuggets of wisdom that help me to honor and understand the profound changes my body and psyche are going through.

Suza Francina, author, Yoga and the Wisdom of Menopause and The New Yoga for People Over 50.

Susun has presented a clear guide for any womyn going through menopause. I had the oppertunity to read this book at a small shop in Michigan and bought presented it to my mother who was experiencing menopause. I would have to say that this book is truly needed in a world where quick fix white pills are the answer for most womyn. Maybe they too will discover this fine fine book.

When I was going through all the changes and symptoms several years ago every book I found on the subject of menopause was written in the 50s or 60s by male doctors (their only advice was to take Hormone Replacement Therapy). After searching the library and so many book stores over months I finally found this book. It has been a life saver and given me the tools and information to deal with this transition we women must all go through. I have given copies of this book to relatives and friends and I am now buying Susun Weed's other books. Even if you're not yet experiencing perimenopause or menopause it's good to read it prepare yourself.

If this book had not been given to me by a close friend, I would be experiencing menopause in an entirely different manner. The purring voice of Grandmother Growth, who introduces many of the chapters, assured me that I am not losing my mind or harboring a terminal illness; that menopause is not something to be endured or fixed, but rather an ongoing adventure loaded with opportunity.
The Wise Woman approach to the various and unexpected discomforts and joys of the Change has motivated me to seize this experience to transform my life for the better.

I am ordering about the 20th copy of this super book. Throughout my menopausal years, I have used it over and over for remedies and general info. Since I am a nurse, women are always asking me these question, and giving them this book is the best way to get this info out into the world. Susun Weed will have a page or two on symptoms other publications don't even mention -- and then gives you the choice of several types of interventions. It's great info for women of all ages - not just menopausal dames. A big THANKS to S.W. for all her insight, herbs and science.

This book is for any woman who has asked the question, "Is this menopause?"
Structured with six steps of healing - ranging from taking time to do nothing at all through a wide variety of alternative healing modalities to the most aggressive of modern medical techniques, Susun S. Weed's "New Menopausal Years: The Wise Woman Way," offers information, insight and wisdom to women who are seeking their own path through the journey of menopause.
I found the level of educational material offered in this book to be extraordinary. I was particularly interested in the wealth of options for engaging my own energy, using healthy foods, physical activities, and herbal remedies. Additionally, I found the approach to the benefits offered by modern medicine to be a wise one - providing information on both the positive and life saving benefits of modern technology as well as the dangers of using invasive therapies where they are not beneficial.
Perhaps what I found most appealing about "New Menopausal Years" was the way in which this time of change is honored, as "Grandmother Growth" seemed to be whispering in my ear the messages of ancient wisdom - messages all too often lost in our culture that only seems to value what is "new and improved".
Ms. Weed offers an online newsletter through her website and I have found it to be a valuable adjunct to this book, with regularly updated content and information on workshops and other events that may be of interest to readers.
