| National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers : Eastern Region - Revised Edition | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
EASTERN REGION
This fully revised edition brings a new level of beauty, accuracy, and usefulness to the field guide that wildflower enthusiasts have relied upon for more than 20 years. More than 940 all-new, full-color images show the wildflowers of western North America close-up and in their natural habitats. The guide has been completely revised to make identification in the field easier than ever. Images are grouped by flower color and shape and keyed to clear, concise descriptions that reflect current taxonomy. |

This compact guidebook, produced to the National Audubon Society's high standards of quality, gives full descriptions of more than 650 species found east of the Rocky Mountains, along with notes on several hundred more. The eminently sensible organization relies on first-impression visible characteristics rather than the elaborate keys of some older texts--a format well suited to beginning wildflower enthusiasts. If, for instance, you wanted to identify a long-stemmed, tubular red flower that you found in a grove of loblolly pines, you would first turn to the color plates, find the section devoted to red flowers, find a likely match from the 30-odd choices, and then turn to the text to see that the flower's habitat and range made a good fit, ruling out those species that do not. After a few minutes' looking, you'll have identified a trumpet honeysuckle. Well written and richly illustrated, this peerless guide makes the ideal companion for an expedition to eastern wood or prairie. --Gregory McNamee

I like it. It's better then some of the other field guide books that I have seen. I would love a all in one (Trees, flowers, and vines) but wildflowers is a good place to start! Nice book. I'd buy it again.

This is well worth the purchase. The photographs are beautiful and all are linked to the description of the flowers.

The book itself is great. My husband and I are often outdoors: hiking, biking, and jogging. This is a great and easy to use reference to identify the flowers we come across. The pictures are nicely organized by flower type and color. The back section has great descriptions about the flowers.
The only reason for the imperfect rating is the fact that the book is thick for the glue binding and with very frequent use the pages will come out. Even with that factor I would definitely recommend this book! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-05-31 01:35:16 EST)

Each of our five kids had to collect wildflower specimens and identify them with some general information for their eighth grade project. We used these books with each one and they are still in great shape after more than 10 years usage. I recently purchased the updated versions and was very pleased with the photos. I didn't really think they could get better but they did!

I bought this book to help me identify the flowers I encountered both in my backyard and in a local state park. Happily, I can report that I was able to identify almost all of them that I came across (one Violet variant, the Confederate Violet, was not mentioned anywhere I could see in the book, but a North Carolina State wildflower website helped me identify it). The color photographs are top notch, many showing both a closeup of the flower, and the plant as a whole. Detailed information on each plant is also available, including the common flowering periods, a location range, dimensions of the flower as well as the entire plant, and much more. If you purchase this book, be sure to read this detailed information when identifying a flower; a number of variants are mentioned in the text that are not shown in the photographs. Overall, I am greatly pleased with this book (though it was the only one I could find that covered plants in the south-eastern part of the United States). Highly recommended!

Something should be said about the ruggedness and durability of this excellent field guide. Mine was purchased about 10 years ago and it has not been lightly used. I dropped it in a creek once and it became as saturated as a sponge, yet after drying out it has never had print or page damage or loose binding. My little boy is always paging through its nearly 900 pages and kids can be very tough on books but this one has held up. Read the other positive reviews of the books content, I can not add much to them. This is the best field guide I have ever had.

There are excellent photos in this book, grouped by color and then by flower complexity. Each picture in the photos section then has a reference to a printed page where detailed information about the plant/flower is presented. It is easy to use and great for an "amateur". My only complaint with the book is that there simply isn't quite enough of it... but, overall it is far and away the best wildflower book I've seen and I have about a dozen different books I use to try to identify wildflowers.

I have referred to this little book countless times. As with all the NAS Field Guides, the information is useful, the pictures are clear, and drawings concise. Great book for yourself or a gift.

This was exactly what I needed to help me identify the flowers that I photograph. I was able to quickly find some flowers that I saw in the Grand Teton National park and others from the hills in Eastern Missouri.

This field guide is probably the field guide I use the most out of all of my Audubon Field guides (I have about 7), and it has never let me down! Identifying wildflowers in forests, wetlands, and even on casual walks has been so easy with this field guide. Even if the exact species isnt in the field guide, it gives me enough information as to what genus and family it is in, so that I can identify it using other sources later. I love how they group the species by color and flower arrangement! I reccomend this to anyone who is interested in entering the botany field!

My husband bought this book in 1980 after his heart attack. He used it to go into the preserve across the street. He would get exercise as well as an education.

I had to collect wildflowers during the summer for an Honors Biology class. The field guides we were given were ones with drawings instead of photographs. It was very hard to correctly identify the wildflower with only a drawing. This field guide is excellent. You identify the flowers with color photographs, and the book gives a fairly in-depth description on the flower, habitat, range, and other comments about the flower. I would recommend this guide to anyone who has to identify wildflowers for school, or just enjoys identifying for pleasure.

I have another wildflower guide which I tried using and was very frustrated with their drawings and color plates. I bought this guide out of desperation---and am completely satisfied. Its simple and easy to use. The flowers are easier to identify with color photography, complete with close up caption. Descriptions are listed later. Not everything is jumbled together, so that your'e fumbling out there around through so many pages. So easy to use. The flowers are more generalized than specific---you won't find 50 examples of a violet--but you'll find several at best. It depends on how detailed you want to get. Quick, ready to use guide that fits perfectly in your husbands fishing vest or in a backpack. Go for it!

Excellent guide -- good photographs organized by color and blossom shape, cross-referenced to detailed classification and habitat information. By far the easiest classification guide I've used (and I've tried many).

I refer to this book all of the time. Even when I don't have it with me, I find it very easy to identify a species using the vivid color pictures contained in the guide. I have two other Audubon guides, and I plan on adding more.

The book is very informative. It is small enough to take with me while walking in the field or keep in the car to identify wild flowers while driving through the country.
