Spending more than 15 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list in hardcover, George Carlin, the thinking persons comic, has made it very clear how successful he is at the transition from stage to page.In Napalm & Silly Putty, Carlins characteristically ironic and hilarious take on life shines through.

Standup comic George Carlin follows up his dark-horse smash bestseller Brain Droppings with another compendium of cranky meditations, cinching his reputation as the Andy Rooney of boomer hepcats. "Road rage, air rage," Carlin rails. "Why should I be forced to divide my rage into separate categories? To me, it's just one big, all-around, everyday rage. I don't have time for fine distinctions." Carlin is not into the lengthy essay--he's a sprinter of the mind. Most sentences in the book could be lifted out to stand alone and provoke deep thought: "How can it be a spy satellite if they announce on television that it's a spy satellite?" Good question. "Why do they bother saying 'Raw sewage'? Do some people cook that stuff?" Yuck, but yes, Carlin's got a point.
He can do an extended bit too, most memorably the transcript of Jesus on a talk show plugging his new tell-all memoir about the Trinity, Three's a Crowd. Carlin is funny, but genuinely angry and poignant at times: "You live 80 years and at best you get about six minutes of pure magic," he says. Sad, but about right. And how did Carlin get into his line of business, "thinking up goofy s---," as he puts it? There's a clue in one entry in this book: "As of 1995 the number of people who had lived on earth was 105,472,380,169 ... it means that at this point there have been almost 1 quadrillion human bowel movements and most of them occurred before people had anything to read. These are the kind of thoughts that kept me from moving quickly up the corporate ladder." Thank god Carlin stayed low on the corporate food chain and high on his own utterly idiosyncratic ideas! --Tim Appelo |

Though the insights into various human behaviors are funny, it is more funny on stage, and left me yawning.

This book is a great rehash of some of Carlins best standup comedy and is great for those not as familiar with all of his standup. For those who know Carlin a little more, you should definitely buy Brain Droppings or When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops. These books have much more new material. I would give this book five stars for its flawless content but I give it four stars for Carlin fans due to its lack of non-standup content. Get his CD's if you want standup.

NAPALM & SILLY PUTTY was a quick read. Some of the writing in the book is verbatim from his comedy acts that are legendary on HBO. However, reading them is not so much a letdown but rather a different way to look at Carlin. Behind his humor and his bold stage presence there is a learned intellectual. And one can't help but admire his mind and the way it works.
Not all of the book is his stage acts, there are brilliant little insights he calls "Short Takes". They are only a sentence or two, but each one has the value of a paragraph of attempted humorous writing. Not to mention I doubt there is anyone that has seen all of Carlin's comedy specials, and if there are a few they certainly would appreciate to see what else the underappreciated wag has regurgitated from his unique mind. The book isn't brilliant, it isn't moving, but it can make you laugh with every page. And if you are even looking into buying the book, that's what you after in the first place anyway. He is at times politically incorrect, and uses some brilliantly colorful language. But he's George Carlin folks, what do you expect? (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-01-17 07:28:26 EST)

Classic Carlin comedy, just in written form. Beware, people will stare at you if you are reading in public because you will definitely be laughing out loud! Lots of bits and pieces type of book - you don't have to read from the beginning to enjoy the book. You can skip around and still enjoy.

I was very dissapointed with this book. I think that I only laughed out loud maybe five times while reading it. Don't get me wrong I still think that George Carlin is still one of the greatest comedians of all time, but this book is mostly recycled material from his old stand-up routines. It has been a few years since I read Brain Droppings but I definatly remember flying on a plane and having to put it down because I was laughing too hard. I gues that I would reccomend this book only if you are not familiar with any of Carlin's stand-up. Otherwise check out Brain Droppings.
