Moon Called

Mercy Thompson's life is not exactly normal. Her next-door neighbor is a werewolf. Her former boss is a gremlin. And she's fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, Mercy isn't exactly normal herself.

Story:
Mercy Thompson is not your normal auto mechanic. One could say that being a auto mechanic is the most normal thing about her. Mercy is one of the Fae known as a skin walker. Her ability lets her transform into a coyote more or less instantly and gives her enhanced senses as well as extra strength. Unfortunately for Mercy she knows of no one else that has this ability so she lives as one of the Fae that do not reveal their existence to the rest of the world. She also happens to be "protected" by the leader, Adam, of the local wolf pack who more or less lets her live as she wants. One day Mercy is working in her shop dealing with a stubborn car and a mountain of paper work that won't file itself, (casualty of her assistant leaving for a full ride scholarship) when a young man walks in looking for work. Mercy can tell that something is off about the young man who only goes by the name Mac but she has a soft spot for those who are down and out due to events beyond their control so she offers him a job. Things go relatively smoothly for a few days until it becomes apparent that Mac is a werewolf without a pack. Seeking to prevent a tragedy due to the rigid rules the werewolf's live by Mercy introduces Mac to Adam the leader of the local werewolf pack who agrees to take care of him. Unfortunately Mac was an accident that someone doesn't want solved and Mercy is soon in a race to protect her friends and find out why someone is trying to start a war among the werewolf packs.

This is a pretty good start to a series. The main character is interesting and doesn't come across as whiny or annoying. The background to the story is also interesting and since this is a series hopefully the whys will be answered as more books come out. I can say that the ending to this book was definitely interesting and hey a writer who actually remembered that the bad guy doesn't always have to be out to take over the world or something. So I'll have to say that this series starting off is better than the lighter stuff that is in this genre. Then again so was the Dead in Dixie series, the Rachel Morgan series, the Undead and series, etc... My point is these series start off great, then good, then hopefully the next book will be good, then I give up I need a Idiot's guide to make sense of it all. My point is that unless each book stands by itself, even if it is a series then they run out of steam. Hopefully the next two are just as good and I'll have a series that is worth keeping up with. I would recommend this to those who like paranormal action adventures, those who like the above series, and those who like paranormal romances.

I have just discovered a new world, and I like it! I normally don't read books like this and I am sorry I didn't delve into this world sooner! I had read the Twilight series (it was a gift, I wouldn't have even bothered if it was me picking out reading material) and I liked it, but it was written for young adult so there was a lot of teenage angst in it. I was looking at recommendations and I ran across Mercy and I am not sorry I took the suggestions! I have read all 3 and am getting ready to pre order the 4th! They are not long reads, perfect for a lazy summer day by the pool!

I don't know why people compare Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson series to Kim Harrison's books. Briggs is at least 10x better in plot development, character development and writing styles. Brigg's characters are more complex yet believable. The twists in plots are pleasant surprises.

Great, easy read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I stumbled upon it while looking for some paranormal/vampire books. Unfortunately most had erotica and/or had ridiculous plot lines.

This one has great characters and romance takes a backseat. I quickly picked up the other two in the series and am eagerly waiting for the fourth installment.

(Hide Review...)  Mercy Thompson's no Mary Sue
Reviewer Permalink
I saw this book when it first came out, but resisted buying it for a long time because I was afraid it was going to be yet another "Mary Sue fights the forces of darkness!" However, I had read Patricia Briggs before and found her to be an excellent author, so I was on the fence about this for a long time.

After reading it, I'm sad that I waited so long. The character of Mercy Thompson is smart and capable, without being contrived or super powerful. Sure, she has her own special abilities that allow her to get along in this world full of werewolves, vampires, and fae. She is a skinwalker, which means she can change easily from human to coyote form. However, this ability doesn't come with the super-strength, super-speed, and super-agressiveness that comes with being a werewolf.

I found Mercy to be likable and wanted to find out what happened to her next. She is confident and independent, without being completely stupid. She knows her limitations, whether or not she likes them, and yeah, sometimes she has to let the "big boys" go play while she sulks.

The romantic triangle that's beginning to take shape between Mercy, Samuel (her old flame), and Adam (her "sexy" next door neighbor.) is very well done because she's so straightforward about her feelings.

Overall, this was an excellent book with excellent characterization. The only problem I had with the novel is that sometimes the action wasn't as intense as it could be. The only time I was genuinely afraid for any of the characters was in the vampire den. I never felt a sense of heart-stopping action, though it was interesting enough to keep me reading.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in dark fantasy, and especially those who want a heroine who isn't just another, perfect "Mary Sue."

Every entertaining, hardly any down spots and a good start to a new urban fantasy. Hopefully Mercy will come to terms w/ her feelings about Samuel and Adam soon. Can't say i'm crazy about the way women rank or are valued in the packs though.

I knew that I loved Mercy from the get go. She is a no bull $h!t kind of girl. She is strong willed and she has made her own slice of heaven for herself. She lives in a world where the human population knows that they are not alone. The fae (fairy folk) have made their presence known.

She herself isn't quite ALL human. She is a walker and when her mother found a coyote pup in her crib instead of a baby girl, Mercy was sent to live with the Marrok pack of werewolves. You start to realize that she has gone through quite a bit in her life which has made her strong but has tainted her views of the world and those old wounds still sway her.

The whole story has a lot of politics but I thought that was great. I always like to know the reasons behind the characters decisions. We are introduced to Adam who is the Alpha of the Columbia Basin Pack and his daughter Jessie. When Mac ends up dead and Jessie is kidnapped Mercy takes an injured and volatile Adam to the Marrok pack to get help.

Through this little road trip to the pack that raised her we learn a lot about Mercy and why she left. What it truly means to belong nowhere and be an outsider looking in. We also meet Samuel who is he Marrok's eldest son and one of the reasons that Mercy left.

So now it is up to Mercy to find out exactly what the heck is going on. We've got Mac dead, Jessie missing, Adam injured, Samuel sent back with her to help her.

I really loved this book I had been avoiding reading it and I totally regret it now. I read it in one day and then went on the 2nd one. You will fall in love with the wolves and the lone walker. You will love her for her courage to persevere, for surviving all she has; you'll root her on through every obstacle. You should give this book a chance so that you don't regret it like I did.

"I didn't realize he was a werewolf at first. My nose isn't it's best surrounded by axle grease and burnt oil -- and it's not like there are a lot of stray werewolves running around. So when someone made a polite noise near my feet to get my attention, I thought it was a customer."

Mercedes "Mercy" Thompson knows a thing or two about werewolves. You see, she was raised by them. Mercy isn't a werewolf, though she does have the ability to change. She is a Walker, or "skinwalker", like the old Southwestern Indian witches. She can shapeshift into a coyote. Faster than a werewolf, but not nearly as strong, Mercy lived with the Marrok pack until she was 16 and went to live with her real mother. Now, she owns a garage (bought from a Gremlin named Zee) and works on German cars (like the VW Van outside owned by a Vampire).

So when Mac walked through her door looking for a job, she knew what he was. Mac couldn't have been more than 17 and looked like a runaway. He was hungry (not a good quality for a werewolf) and was looking for some work. And Mercy felt sorry for him. She knew she had to notify Adam, the local Alpha Werewolf and Mercy's next door neighbor, and she wanted to ease Mac into telling her his story first. But he was really skittish (another bad quality for a werewolf). So she gave him a job and a place to stay....he could sleep in the van. He seemed to be a scared kid, and all Mercy wanted to do was help him.

But when she showed up one night to see if he was ok, she heard voices outside the shop. Mac was there, along with a couple of humans and another new werewolf. They were trying to get him to come back with them, and he refused. When Mercy tried to help Mac out, a fight broke out, and the new werewolf ended up dead. It was time to call Adam.

Apparently someone had turned Mac, and had kept him prisoner in a cage. They were experimenting new drugs on him when he escaped. Adam was none too happy about it, but he offered to help Mac understand his change and help him. But just when Mercy thought everything was going to be ok, Mac's body was dumped on her doorstep. Adam's house had been broken into and he was left close to dead. And his teenage human daughter Jessica had been kidnapped. Mercy was the only one that could help now.

Smart, sassy and full of bravado, Mercy Thompson is my kind of heroine!! In a world where werewolves run in packs, fae are alive and living among us, and vampires haunt the night, Mercy can handle herself. She is gutsy and sarcastic, a true spirit. Adam Hauptman is dangerous and cool. Tough as nails, but with a soft spot for Mercy, he is plunged into a war that he never saw coming. With help from Mercy's old Marrok pack, they try to uncover what is really going on in world of werewolves. The wind is bringing change....and it isn't good.

Not only was there a fabulous "new" storyline, but enough back story so a person feels they can truly understand where Mercy came from and how the packs run. This is definitely a series I'm going to continue....in fact, Blood Bound, which is book 2 is staring at me right now!! If you are a fan of the OLD Laurell K. Hamilton books, you will definitely enjoy this series. Patricia Briggs has brought us a series that is a true page-turner....filled with fun, excitement and lots of things that go bump in the night.

Mercedes 'Mercy' Thompson is not a werewolf. Get that straight, okay? She's a walker, a coyote from Native American folklore.

Being a one of a kind, she's got some interesting friends in low and high places that keeps her life just above normal. So when a newly changed werewolf, Mac, shows up at her garage doorstep wanting a job, Mercy thinks it over for a second before saying yes. Never mind the kid doesn't have permission to enter territory of the local Alpha, Adam Hauptman and his pack, or the fact that a renegade group of loner wolves and humans are experimenting on werewolves, and chasing after their runaway science project, Mac. And never mind the fact that Mercy, having been raised by a pack of wolves in Montana, knows better. Yet throws caution to the wind anyways.

What should have been a very routine hire turns out to be a small, loose string, and lucky girl--Mercy gets to be the one to unravel the whole tapestry, without even trying. From finding Adam practically broken apart, his daughter Jesse missing, finding a dead body at her single-wide doorstep, Mercy finds herself in a whole heap of 'what the...' moments but never looses her ability to feel the fear but bite the bullet and pull through. She takes Adam to a safe place, her old haunting grounds in Montana, and informs Bran, the Marrok and the overlord of all the North American werewolves. As Adam takes a day to mend, Mercy revisits her memories, old acquaintances and Samuel, Bran's son, a long-time crush.

As she, a recovering Adam and Samuel head back to the Tri-Cities to get some answers, the plan to figure out what is going on takes precedence over the territorial exhibitions between Adam and Samuel, much to Mercy's surprise. And that means getting help from a gremlin, Zee, who has some nifty metal abilities, and information from the local Vampire Seethe via Stefan, a client. What Mercy discovers is not at all what it seems, and as time slips away, the chance to save Jesse gets ever more complicated.

FINALLY, a book worth reading, and more than once. A book that has a great female-lead who isn't that stereotypical kill-with-a-conscious and reads so normal. From Mercy to the enigmatic Adam, to all the secondary characters, you feel for them, root for them. They're so relatable and touchable, and I miss that element in these kinds of books. This world of Briggs, and especially the werewolves is pure brilliance. She does a great job of explaining while not overdoing it, creating great tension between the the characters by keeping it minimal but the descriptions and inflections pitch-perfect. She really knows her stuff and it shows.

The only little thing that I noticed was that the last quarter is a bit disjointed, like Briggs couldn't decide how to wrap it up. It's not a big deal, but it's there and it gave me pause, but not enough to not finish it. Also, the 'reason', the climax, wasn't as spectacular as I anticipated but it fits with the whole feel of the book, which is meant to be more realistic and out of place.

I can't wait to start the 2nd one, and boy, was it worth the money. Thank you Patricia Briggs for considering our wants and demands. Well done.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through the book and am enjoying the story and characters, but the cover really threw me off. According to the story the heroine,Mercy, is an adult who lives alone and runs her own business. There are references to back when she was sixteen. One of her bevy of boyfriends has a 15 year old daughter who Mercy treats as a child. Yet the cover model, who wears a nametag saying Mercy appears to be in the 12-14 age range. OK, a child probably couldn't aquire such extensive tatoos; but why not use a model who at least appeared to be of legal age? I guess they are trying to attract an audience of teenaged boys. I hope they aren't after old perverts. Fortunately; with books, you can ignore the pictures and build your own mental image. Ms. Briggs didn't bother describing Mercy in any detail, so I made her at least mid twenties and dressed her in practical auto mechanic clothing rather than the streetwalker duds they dressed that cover child in. Once that was done, it was much easier to accept her dashing around the countryside trying to rescue her friends from the bad guys. I'm on the lookout for the next few books in the series. I hope she's not going to pull an Anita Blake and start bed-hopping amongst all her various paranormal admirers. I prefer to stick with the adventure and skip the porn. So far,so good with book 1.

I've read a few books by Patricia Briggs and have liked her style of writing. This book is about Mercy, a mechanic and also a "walker" who can shift into coyote shape. Moon Called is filled with supernatural beings like werewolves, vampires, witches and fae. Mercy was raised by werewolves after being orphaned as a child. In this series, the fae and "come out" to the world, but the other supernatural races have not. As a walker, she has the ability to identify other supernatural beings quite easily. Later in the book, she finds out something else that she did not know about walkers, which was quite an interesting nugget of information.

The story starts with a newly made werewolf named Mac showing up at her auto shop looking for work. Unfortunately, there are very bad people after Mac because he was part of some experiments to try to find a cure for werewolves. This sets up the book for the adventure that follows and includes romance - two werewolves vie for Mercy's affection, fighting and mystery. What I like most about the book was Mercy. She was a great balance between an intelligent, caring touch girl who could hold her own and didn't whine and wimp out for one of the male characters to save her. With her independence and ability to take care of herself, she still was not a hard-core. Mercy was a character I could like and admire and look forward to her development as a character in forthcoming books.

I liked this book and plan on reading the next book in the series, "Blood Bound." I would give this book a solid 3 1/2 stars.

I've been getting luckier than usual with paranormal writers recently. For a while there, it seemed that every book I picked up was either written poorly or had a blah plot or characters I didn't care about. But lately I've discovered several great new authors, and Patricia Briggs is one of them. I've read the first two books in this series and really enjoyed them. I have book 3 but haven't gotten to it yet but hopefully soon. mercy is a great character, strong but sympathetic and not gaining new powers every five minutes. She makes the books for me, along with Ms. Briggs' great writing. Looking forward to book 3!

I absolutely adore this book. Mercy Thompson has become one of my favorite heroines because she is tough and yet still does not have the immaturity that many heroines of urban fantasy seem to fall into. The romance takes a back seat and the characterization is spot on.

If you love urban fantasy and are sick of all the hyped up romance novels spilling into the genre, pick up Moon Called and be amazed. I was.

Patricia Briggs has written one fabulous, edge of your seat adventure. I want to chat with Mercy as she fixes my biodiesel Jetta and eat popcorn with Warren and Kyle. I want to date Adam and talk about babies with Samuel. I want to move to the Tri-cities, and I've been to the Tri-cities. I felt bereft when I arrived at the last page of Moon Called. I had fallen so enthralled with the world and so in love with the characters that returning to the real world was physically painful and I had to run out and grab the rest of the books in the series IMMEDIATELY. I needed the next book like I need air to breathe.

Mercedes is a Volkswagon mechanic who was raised by werewolves in Montana. She is not a werewolf, but a Walker: she can shift into a coyote at will, is independent of the moon cycle, and is resistant to many forms of magic. When a young werewolf, hungry, homeless, and lost, shows up at her shop looking for a job, she gives him one and introduces him to Adam, the local alpha of the Columbia Basin werewolf pack who is also her overbearing and handsome neighbor. Men bearing guns show up in pursuit and suddenly all hell breaks loose. Adam's daughter is captured, Adam is wounded, and it falls to Mercy to save the day. What else can a girl do? She wipes the axle grease off her hands and gets to work hunting down the killers, braving crazed vampires, crafty fae, and Samuel, the man who broke her heart.

Mercy is a great heroine: tough as nails but still sympathetic. She's loyal, smart, brave, and not afraid to get her hands dirty. The other characters are just as well crafted. I often have trouble relating to the heroines and heroes in Urban Fantasy, because they have too hard an edge and are too cynical. Ms. Briggs succeeds in creating dark urban fantasy with heart. The world-building is fabulous too, particularly the interactions of the werewolf pack.

I highly recommend this original and action-packed book, and eagerly anticipate following the rest of Mercy's adventures.

i'm unsure what people who liked this book want to get from authors, but undoubtedly, it ain't much. the writing in "Moon Called" is substandard (and that's being kind describing it that way). i have nothing against the author, and hey, she's making good money and selling books, so that's cool.

but i do find it hard to believe briggs put much effort into this book. "Moon Called" is literally filled with cliches, to such an extent that i'm a little amazed she could pull off writing quite this trite. in a way, it's an artform, because it's not exactly unskilled writing, it's instead being really talented at producing horrible books. i simply can't believe this was an unconscious effort on the author's part.

if you're looking for a piece of literature that's mindless, "Moon Called" is for you.

Mercy Thompson likes working on cars. German cars mostly. So she does not mind working on a VW bus to keep the vampires off her back. And her boss is a fae and her neighbor is a werewolf. So you would think she could handle almost everything. But things are about to get weird. Even for a shape-shifting woman who grew up with weird as a daily problem.
Lots of fine and humor.

In this book, Mercy Thompson is the save-the-world kind of girl, but she does it without becoming a martinet and walking all over people who care about her! What a concept! Her character is unique as well, being the lone "skinwalker" who turns into a coyote in a world of bigger, more powerful weres and other creatures.
The supernatural creatures in Patricia Briggs' book are interesting and unique - vampires and werewolves and fae with a strong culture and facinating interaction. The characters are extremely well developed and the plot just zips along. I wish I had happened upon this series when there were about 10 of them out - waiting for the next book is going to be hard!

I absolutely enjoy stories about vampires, werewolves and supernatural creatures. I was a huge fan of Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake until the author decided to give her a sex life; indeed, a very active one which has made Anita under the mercy of her raging hormones. I have been looking for something similar to quench my thirst for dark urban fantasy. While Patricia Briggs is a new author for me, I decided to give this series a whirl after reading the great reviews. I am certainly glad that I did.

Mercedes Thompson is the heroine and narrator of the series. To the unknowing, she is simply a law-abiding citizen who operates her own garage. But to the preternatural community, she is what they call a Walker, a coyote with shapeshifting powers and uncanny sense of magic. Thus, she immediately recognizes the young werewolf that approaches her for work. Although it isn't wise to be around an untrained werewolf, Mercy senses his extreme anxiety and offers him a job. It doesn't take long before danger comes to her doorstep as Mac's background is revealed. And Mercy knows that she must enlist the help of her sexy neighbour who also happens to be the local Alpha. But shortly after Adam welcomes Mac to his pack, he is attacked by those who hunt Mac and left badly injured. Mercy has no choice but to take him to her adopted clan in Montana where the Marrok, the leader of all North American werewolves, lives. Not only do we get to meet other key players in the series, but we also learn about Mercy's childhood and her failed relationship with Samuel.

The plot gets complicated as Briggs brings in a whole heap of characters, vampires and werewolves alike, who all have an interest in solving this mayhem that has terrorized the werewolves of the Tri-Cities. I believe that this is where the author particularly excelled in, for instead of sending my head spinning, I was actually intrigued by these characters that hold promise for future stories. The characterization is good and the plot flowed smoothly ensuring a fast-paced and action-packed read. Mercy is a very likeable and believable heroine who comes across as modest, vulnerable and endearingly stubborn. I look forward to reading more about her world and the creatures that she shares it with.

You are always going to have those one or two people that really dislike books that get great reviews and then whine that they bought the book because of their reviews. So I always make a point to read those reviews AFTER I have read the book to ensure that I am able to form my own opinion about the writing. In this particular case, I really enjoyed this book. There was quite a bit of filler in the book that others felt unnecessary, but I feel that some filler is needed to ensure that the character and her habits are developed to give us a better sense of the character. I feel this book does well and doesn't go overboard. I personally feel that sometimes by putting in these mundane activities, it allows us to have a break from the action and helps humanize the character a bit. She can't be off fighting all of the time. Everyone needs to sleep and eat sometimes. If these things were omitted, someone would complain that the character was unbelievable because she never slept, or took a crap, or whatever people complain about.

Anyway, I personally enjoyed the book thoroughly. I read it all in one sitting. I will defiantly be purchasing the next books in the series as well. I really enjoyed the writing of this book. In most dark fantasy novels, the heroine is always making mistakes and bad choices - Mercy definitely has good instinct and she follows them. This is the first werewolf/shape shifter book that I have read. I really enjoyed the concept and I enjoyed that the heroine was a little more rough, harsh, and not overly girly. This is a character that I can see actually holding her own. I also enjoyed how the character didn't do anything super human - she has a good self-defense base, but overall didn't do anything unrealistic (she didn't get captured and fight a room full of men that obviously had her out-muscled, beat them all to a pulp, and walk away unscathed).

So, my verdict is - if you are looking for the next great American classic, look elsewhere. BUT if you want something entertaining to allow you to have an escape from reality for a few hours and like this genre this book may be for you.

This was fun to read! Briggs did a very good job of providing the backgrounds of the characters. They were introduced as part of the story without seeming to be footnotes.

The humor seemed natural and, while there was plenty of violence, it wasn't overly gory. I was impressed with the intelligence of the writing and the interplay of the characters.

I'll be ordering the rest of the series.

I'm a really big fan of Laurell K. Hamilton and Kim Harrison so this book was a great find for me. I was ensnared in the plot fairly quickly and was very suprised that I liked the character of Mercy. I know absolutely nothing about cars or mechanics, but Briggs weaves that part of it into the book very well. It takes a very skilled writer to do 1st person well and Briggs pulls it off without a hitch. I will definately be buying the next one in the series.

Five stars for engaging characters, great plot and wonderful story weaving!!

I am so mad I believed all the good reviews this book received. I bought it and could not even finish it. I forced myself to make it halfway then I gave up. I kept waiting for something to happen but it never did.

First of all the plot was lame. And as another writer points out, there were tons of waste. Probably to make the word count.

Second, because it was written in first person, you never got any interaction from the other characters. This leaves you with only what could be "seen" from the heroine, who by the way was also boring, leaving flat characters that had potential but couldn't deliver.

Not sure if this was fantasy fiction or paranormal, but I won't be reading another by this author.

Wish I could get my money back.

I had looked forward to getting this book for a while and when I ot it I was slightly dissapointed. Mercy in the book is a mechainic, and she able to change her form into a coyote. She lives next door to an alpha male werewolf. This is a romance book minus the romance. It does have a good story, and the plot is good, but if you are seeking smut and romance this is not the book.

(Hide Review...)  Good Story, Poor Writing

I have never written a reveiw for a book before online, but this one I had to.

The writing in Moon Called is terrible. The paragraphs have sentences that nearly all begin with "I..". Also, the author writes about things that are irrelevant to the story, such as the actions she takes to go to bed or walk outside. There is no need for all the junk the writer puts in this book. It actually irritated me so bad becuase of these two things that I had to stop a little after the middle of teh book. Thinking it was just my mood that turned me off of this book, I tried to read it again six months later, but I couldn't make it past the third chapter.

Although it was irritating having to read all of the usless facts and sentences that all begin the same, the story line is good. The idea that a shape shifter has to deal with and even help an aggressive werewolf society is very interesting. I have to admit that the story line is what kept me going for as long as I could.

I decided to read this book since it was recommended by one of my favorite authors, Kim Harrison. The book good, i would have really liked to get to know the characters a little more. I really liked the plot and she has a great writing style. I stuck with it and i'm almost finished the next book Blood Bound, which i like a little better, only because we are getting to know more of the characters personalities. I just ordered the third in the series.

Mercy is a nice clean brake from the popular heroines out there in Urban Fantasy. She is average looking and has a hard working blue collar job as a mechanic. The more popular Urban Fantasy heroines out there are the dream Pinup Gorgeous Sex Kittens (with XXX rated situations), that have glamorous jobs or ones that are more exciting then a mechanics. With all the fantasy creatures stripped away (everyone being just humans) you can really relate to Mercy and her struggles.

I loved this book as it gave a different spin on other supernatural beings. I got caught up in all the adventures that Mercy had and meeting the other members of her family. The writing style of the Author made one feel that you could almost feel Adam doing his thing when calling the others. This book was a recommendation from a friend. Now I know why I will keep her as my friend because she has great taste in books

Excellently written book with believable setting and characters. Some laugh out loud moments and so well written that I found myself reading selections out loud to my husband, who was eagerly waiting to get his hands on it. I'm off to the bookstore this morning to find books 2 and 3. For fans of Kim Harrison, this is as gripping and interesting and startlingly real as her Dead Witch Walking. Highly Recommended.

I friend loaned this book to me, and I am so thankful she did. I was engrossed into the story in the first 10 pages, and it was gripping until the very end. I have the next 2 books on my nightstand, and I'll be starting book 2 tonight.

Others have already given a great breakdown of the plot, and I do not want to give too much away. It is a multi-storied arc that will keep you guessing to the end.

I LOVE the Mercy Thompson books.I first found out about it on Amazon. It sounded really interesting so I ordered it.I find that Patricia Briggs is a great author for coming up with a story like this one.It has all the great mythical creatures that are said to be myths and legends. But here some of those so called myths and legends reveal themselves under the orders of the Grey Lords. The ones who are in charge of the Fae,the beings who are great and unimaginably powerful.

Moon Called:
I love this story because of who and what Mercy is.She is a Walker.A Walker being someone who can change there form into the Coyote at will.A Walker who was raised by a Werewolf and not just any Werewolf but the Marrok himself. The Marrok is THE Alpha, the leader of all Werewolves.Mercy maybe being the last of her kind because she doesn't know of any others living around her area.No one really knows much about the Walkers or if there is any of them left other than Mercy.Having been hunted and killed by the Vampires years ago.Because Mercy, like all other Walkers she is immune to some forms of magic and more because they can talk to ghost, for that reason the Vampires felt threatened. She is surrounded by Werewolves and others mythical creatures.Mercy is a loner, not being Fae or a Werewolf it is dangerous for one such as her.If it wasn't for Adam the local Alpha Mercy would have been dead a long time ago.Adam claims her as his mate(under the orders of the Marrok,Mercy unaware of that oder)which gives her protection, him being the Alpha of the local pack.Adam's claim on her is real to him,his wolves believe that his claim on her is just for her protection from them and other wolves, knowing that while she has that they can't touch Mercy without being dealt with by Adam.

I love how she has this little love triangle going on with herself,Adam(the local Alpha), and Sam(the Marrok's son).Which is pretty dangerous seeing as how Adam and Sam are both Dominant and if she doesn't choose one things can get serious.Who should she choose?...Samuel her first love that she still has feelings for?...of Adam who she finds very attractive and dangerous because she can't control herself when around him.

A new wolf comes by her shop looking for a job not knowing what Mercy really is.But with her strong nose and knowing their scent she knows what Mac is.Being curious she gives him the job to see how things turn out unknowingly getting involved in Werewolf business.A man and werewolf come looking for Mac have finally been able to track him down to Mercy's garage.Having killed a werewolf and needing the mess to be cleaned up Mercy must call Adam(the Local Alpha)and let him know what is going on.Adam takes in Mac to train him in how to control his wolf.Adam is attacked at his own home his daughter is taken and Mac is left dead on Mercy's porch as a warning to stay away.Adam is hurt and his daughter is missing. This is a big mystery as to who exactly behind all this.Mercy and the rest of Adam's pack are doing everything they can to find Jesse.Adam suddenly drives off after getting a phone call no one knowing where he has gone. Now Adam is missing as well and Mercy receives help from someone who knew Adam before they were turned when they were in the military, the one now helping Mercy was up until now apart of all the trouble that has been going on.

This book was awesome! I love the world Mercy seems to live in and I enjoyed learning about Bran and Adam's packs. I have a feeling I am really going to enjoy this series. The writing is well done, better than a lot of the writing in this genre. The story moved along at a great pace. I read that Patricia Briggs signed on for 7 books in this series, and I think that many different plots could spawn from the characters in this book. I can't wait to learn more about Stephan (which it looks like I will in the next book)and some of the other characters as well. I was addicted to Laurell K's first half of the Anita Blake series and then I just became increasingly disappointed. Here's to some fresh blood! I feel hopeful for the future of this series.

Good plot, good flow, IMO. I enjoyed the story, and take away one star because of the sudden blast of all characters at the end, when the mystery is brought to light. It was a little hard to keep track of it all coming at you, all at once. I didn't know I should've paid strict attention to ALL of the characters in the book.

I enjoyed this story, but it didn't truly grab me. I kept trying to pinpoint what was missing while I read, and I think I settled on disbelief. I like the main character, but her abilities and reactions to the course of events and the other characters didn't seem likely enough for the setting, her relationships with the other characters seemed too convenient to the plot, the escapes from peril seemed too easy - all in all, it was a pleasant read, but not terribly engaging.

A very enjoyable read, but way too many minor characters to the point that it distracted from the flow of the story. I would rather have seen the author save some character introductions for later books instead of trying to cram all her ideas into her first novel about Mercy Thompson. All in all though it was a fun story and I look forward to reading additional books in the series.

I liked this one. I felt it was very slow starting, though it did pick up a bit a few chapters in. I enjoyed this, but initially, I wasn't sure I'd be continuing with the series. I decided to take a chance though, and read the next one. After reading them both, I've decided I like this series a lot more than I initially thought. This one is not a four star book for me, but it's interesting, and different from most other paranormals I've read, which is why I decided to continue with the series. I have no problem recommending this to other paranormal fans.

I decided to give this book a try after reading the overwhelmingly good reviews about it, and boy, am I glad I did! This is one of those rare preternatural thrillers that can be read several times without losing its appeal. There are plenty of plot twists, and the characters and the worldsetting are both realistic and intriguing.

I loved all the characters, but Mercy really does stand on her own. It is SO rare to find a female lead that besides being intelligent and self-sufficient, also has a lot of dignity and compassion... she really has a heart of gold, and it is truly hard not to love her. She is tough, but not a macho chick, she is funny, but not sarcastic or bitter, she is courageous and strong, but not infallible, she knows her own limitations, yet she does her best despite of them. She has flaws, but she is all the more likable because of them. I also really respected her for the sincerity of her faith, she really is a honest person through and through.

Another thing I enjoyed, besides the story, were the love interests... this is one of those extremely rare series in which I really don't mind so much who she ends up with. Both guys are awesome in their own way, I loved the both of them. Although I certainly prefer Samuel, Adam is not a bad choice at all... who could resist either of them, really? :)

As a side note, the next book in the series is even better than this one... don't miss it if you can!
