After a brief review of basic concepts in thermodynamics, Yates and Johnson cover qutum theory, statistical mechanics, kinetic theory of gases, chemical kinetics and molecular modeling at a level appropriate for upper level undergraduates. Aside from chapter 3, which presents a muddled treatment of the quantum theory of the free particle (see, for example, equation 3.43), the presentation is rather standard, but sound and readable. Scattered throughout the text are appropriate engineering applications such as the historical role of the theory of blackbody radiation and its modern use in optical pyrometry (chapter 2), and available computer programs for molecular modeling, and their application to rational design of lubricants (chapter 8).
