The ARCO Mikitary Test Tutor is amazing! It really helps, and the practice tests are amazing!

I purchased this book to study for the AFAST exam. All the sections in this book mirror the fomrat of the AFAST. However, their were some slight differences:

1) The pictures in the Instrument Comprehension portion of the practice exam are extremely dated in comparison to the actual test.
2) The actual AFAST helicopter knowledge questions seemed too easy in comparison to the ARCO study guide.
3) The cyclic orientation questions were easier on the AFAST.
4) The mechanical functions portion had several questions about boats and ships, which were not in the ARCO study guide.

All the personal questions and the complex movements were pretty much exactly the same as the AFAST. Making note cards for the complex movements is a good idea. I also purchased PRINCIPLES OF HELICOPTER FLIGHT to assist with my helicopter knowledge. The diagrams, explanations, and glossary words helped me out tremendously in that book.

Overall this ARCO study guide is great for the AFAST. I scored a 134 on the exam thanks to this book.

I took the AFOQT in Feb 2008, if you only buy one study guide, by Barron's. The ARCO does not reflect the current 12 section test, Barron's does. Also Barron's gives you 2 practice exams, ARCO only one. The ARCO book is fine if you want another practice exam, but you need only work on the sections that are included in Barron's.

This book is TOO OLD and there are TOO many errors! The AFOQT has been updated, and lots of the study info is either outdated, incomplete, or inaccurate. Can't afford that in the test!

This review is for anyone taking the Army's AFAST exam. I'm not sure how good this book is for other exams.

There are two reasons I recommend this book for the Army's AFAST exam;

First of all, you need to really practice the Complex Movements section of the test. It seems to make or break most test takers and is very hard to understand if you are unfamiliar with it. This practice alone makes the book worth it.

Second, the Army AFAST exam isn't really a hard exam, however it's graphics are so poor it makes it a hard exam. Therefore, using this book to teach yourself how the exam expects you to recognize its poor graphics pays off really well during exam time.

For these two reasons, I recommend this book. It's not a great 'review' book, however it will teach you how to take the test...which can be just as important.

Arco's Military Flight Aptitude Tests study guide gives you a good overview of the subjects that you will be tested on. If you have a strong backround in basic physics and math, then you should be able to get by with this book. But if you need extra help relearning math and physics, then I would recomend buying Kaplans GRE study guide, since it will actually teach you the concepts (I stink at math, so I really needed a book that put the concepts in simpler terms, so that I could do well on the math word problems).

Arco's MFAT just has sample questions, but it does teach you some stuff about the flight material you will need to learn. So I recomend you buy it, because you not going to find any book that can teach you some of the unique flight (and natical if your joining the Navy) material that you will find in Arco's book. But if you need a math and physics update, then buy Kaplans GRE study guide.

Use this in conjunction with the marine ASTB gouge, and whatever other gouge you can find at the AirWarriors website. And be sure to cram on the math as it is the most important part for your OAR. I got 65 OAR, and 8,7,7 on my first try.

This book is good, but the best study guide is the marine one you can find online. this book also works well for the afoqt, but remember that they changed the test. There is no electric maze.

I am a recent college grad and was interested in joining the Navy to fly planes. I had no clue on what becoming an officer meant or what to expect on the journey to get there. The book gives you practice test for each branch of the military (navy army air force etc) for their entrance exams. I was studying for the ASVAB. If you have a basic understanding of math and take some time (about a week) to familiarize yourself with the test you'll do fine. The book also gave valuable info on different types of flight paths to go, ex. pilot, NFO. All in all if I had to do it again I'd probably purchase this book. However I found out later in my search online that you can actually download this book. I forgot which site it was but a few minutes to find it will probably save you a little bit of money in the end.

I got a 95 on the ASVAB without any studying or practice tests, so I figured I should get ready for some more advanced exams. The Navy test here is poorly written. You don't put arrows to point at a diameter in the shape of an arc on the inside of the gear so that it looks like the circumference. Where the hell did they learn how to draw these diagrams? Monkey school? This practice test is not as "advanced" as it functionally becomes. The real test is dealing with much more sophisticated concepts, having more advanced aviation and even trig included. The difficulty here is just attempting to even make sense of the hackneyed diagrams. The Army flight practice test, in contrast, is well written, if perhaps a little too easy. I can breeze through that one. I doubt the real thing's that simple. I haven't bothered much with the AF practice test yet. In spite of the problems, I'm giving it 3 stars because this is the one the officer recruiter will point you towards. There are no alternatives, other than maybe real flight training, flight sims, FAA books, and college.

I was surprised that this book was "on it" when it came to the test questions that they ask you. I can't speak how well it is when it comes to the other branch tests, but it helped me prepare for the test giving me a passing score.

One draw back of the book as far as helicopter knowledge it really fails to cover the basics for someone knowing nothing about helicopters. I suggest getting a book that explains the basics for beginners.

Another thing to point out if you don't mind ebooks you can view this book for free on the army warrant officer website. The whole book is PDF format.

This is a good book for the AFOQT, I just took the test and it has it all. My advice is study hard and practice timing yourself. This book has all the subtests found on the AFOQT, study some math if your rusty. GOOD luck!

On page 210, problem number 7, there is a mistake...the right answer isn't even an option...Also, on the AFOQT section, the pictures of the planes on page 191 to 200 are very bad in which it's hard to tell if your looking at the bottom or the top of the plane. The other errors may be the ambiguousity of the questions presented. The book, on the brighter side, definitely covers what will be on the test...but don't rely too much on the answers it gives you.

This book is the best source out there, but you will not pass the AFAST unless you study, study, study (and this includes picking up additional helicopter related books). The trickiest parts of the AFAST are the Helicopter Knowledge and Complex Movements sections. You should cut the complex movements questions out and make flashcards. As far as helicopter knowledge goes, it's a pretty broad spectrum. Know how the main and tail rotors work. Read Principles of Helicopter flight. Don't be afraid to take other tests in the book, this will help you. Know how boats move in the water, including how rudders and propulsion work. Study for at least a month prior to taking the AFAST. I got a 115. Good luck!

I had mixed expectations for this book based on the reviews I read here and other places about this book. I purchased this book and the Principles of Helicopter Flight book and used both to study. The practice test in this was a life saver! I scored a 143 out of a possible 176 on the AFAST and finished all sections of the test with time to spare. Do the practice test over and over and over and do it for time. I made flash cards for the complex movements section and that helped alot as well. Overall this was a great purchase and I would reccomend it to anyone taking the AFAST in the future.Do not use this as your only source of reference! Study on flight principles as well, because the questions are not straight out of the test. If you do not study, you will not even know what some of the questions are asking for!

I took, and passed the AFAST, without ever having been in a helicopter using this book. It was the closest to what the test is actually like. However, don't use just this book. I found the FAA's "Rotorcraft Flying Handbook" to be extremely helpful as well. Study, study, study!!!

I purchased the Arco Military Flight Aptitude Tests text for the sole purpose of preparing for the ASTB. This book was less than helpful. The section devoted to the ASTB had test sections that did not exist on the actual test and was missing a section that did exist on the actual test. Some of the questions were similar, but overall the practice guide that Arco provides will not help very many people. I was not pleased with my purchase. It should be noted that my review only covers one section of the text purchased and in no way represents the entire book...however I will not purchase another Arco text for the rest of my life if I can avoid it.

I took the Army Flight Aptitute Selection Test (AFAST) after taking the practice AFAST in this book and scored a 129 on it. I would recommend this book for anybody who need to take a military flight aptitute test.

Im active duty Air Force so take it from me. If youre really serious about becoming a pilot, dont rely on this book. Buy more books and study hard. Take a Math refresher course if you have to.

Maybe Im just not good at these tests... I dont know. I took the Air Force AFOQT twice (youre only allowed to take it twice). The first time I scored REALLY low. I bought this book along with other books to prepare for the second test but it didnt made any difference. I also have the Officer Candidate Test book and that book didnt help me either. I did everything to prepare but my scores... Urghh!!!

Majority of the folks that do well on this test are graduates (fresh out of highschool or college) because the material is still fresh in their brain. If you are active duty military (enslisted) trying to cross into the officer corps, then you would have to be a good test taker because its a percentage game.

Im not trying to be negative and all. In fact I know some people who didnt even read a book to prepare, matter of fact this guy I knew was drunk the night before he took the test and his scores were in the 80s accross the board. I mean how crazy is that? Its a percentage game is what it is. If majority of the folks taking the test with you score really high, then your chances of making it is grim. So before you take the test, look around the test room and if you see folks that look like Bill Gates or that Dexter kid, tell the proctor that youre not feeling well and you want to re-schedule.
