The book is amusing enough, and it does have a lot of facts, but I just wasn't thrilled with it. I adore my friend Michael, but I was a little disappointed,

George W Bush is by far the best president the United States has ever had. Yes, he even tops the accomplishments that his dad achieved in the few years he served. I love what Bush has done for the people of the USA, Iraq, and the world. Bush has helped the world out in so many ways. People are ungrateful to Bush's kindness and generosity.

Some reasons why President Bush is the best:

a. Our Economy is in the best shape its ever been!
b. Lower gas prices than we had 8 years ago
c. better health care system
d. more jobs/less unemployment
e. stabilizing peace in the Middle East

Twenty years from now he'll be hailed as one of the greatest presidents in history for sparking freedom in the middle east.

Thank you Bush!.

I chose to review the man. Marxist, racist, makes American soldiers look like butchers. His "movies" are half truths at best. He has one agenda, and that is himself. This is done by using the fact that americans are too damn lazy to research anything, so they use him to get their opinions. If he hates this country so much, why does he not leave? Oh yea, we have made him millions, which is truly all he cares about.

Michael Moore takes a look at the current election and gives advise about how Barack Obama could win (which he obviously did)and answers questions about the U.S. Government (the one about the hanging chad cracked me up) and also what we should do with Bush on Jan. 20, 2009 (he thinks a purp.walk would be appropriate)

All in all a very funny, entertaining, fast read

I ordered the book on tape version and found it to be 100% worth the price! Not only is the book very informative and funny, but the fact that he read the book himself on the book-on-tape version made it all the better!! Even non-liberals will find humor and common sense in Moore's latest work!

Mike is a very Truth's Man! He want justice, as we want.
In Italy we have, as him, Beppe Grillo, that also accuse the evils of society. Luckily he is still alive because he is a comic actor.
Good luck Mike!

(Hide Review...)  Mixed bag
Reviewer Permalink
I found this book a mixed bag. Mr. Moore is, IMO, better at making films than writing books. His willingness to confront people is more interesting than the smarmy tone of his writing.

The first chapter, 'Ask Mike' was mostly silly, consisting of straw man questions to which Mike provides occasionally amusing responses. It was bad enough that had the theme continued into the next chapter I would have given up.

Fortunately, Mike gets into gear with the Chapter 2 'How to Elect John McCain . . . ' in which he excoriates the Democrats for past weaknesses that, if continued, will lead to yet another defeat. Points well taken.

That said, the third chapter assumes an Obama victory and sets out 'Ten Presidential Decrees for His First Ten Days'. These are an admixture of some of Moore's more radical ideas -- 'Anyone Who Tries to Make a Profit From Healthcare Will Be Arrested' and some genuine goofiness -- 'Free HBO for Everyone!' Sprinkled throughout are a few decent suggestions, e.g., have the rich pay more in taxes like they did after the New Deal and before Reagan.

Chapter 4, is, IMO, the best one in the book. Titled, 'Six Modest Proposals to Fix Our Broken Elections' it offers a rather concise overview of how to improve the process. #2 pencil anyone?

Chapter 5 will definitely rile up some folks. Moore would like to see ALL of the crimes committed over the past eight years by members of Bush the administration adjudicated by the courts. He reprints the Articles of Impeachment submitted by Rep. Dennis Kucinich as an overview of those crimes and suggests a massive "perp walk" of the accused immediately after Obama is sworn in. Good luck with that; between a sadly politicized judiciary, the 'Get Out Of Jail Free' card that most politicians seem to keep in their wallet and historical precedent, it ain't likely to happen, even though it really should.

The final chapter deals with who to elect from individual states. Helpful if your state is included. Otherwise . . . inside baseball.

The appendices are somewhat sketchy but the first one is quite amusing. Moore subjects himself to the theatre that is right-wing media whenever he launches a new project. He helpfully provides them a guide to quoting him out of context, e.g., " . . . the terrorists . . . are my friends . . ." while demanding he explain himself (while they constantly interrupt) because he knows that's exactly what will happen with those intellectual/moral fools/tools.

So, in sum, a mixed bag. My election prediction? Afterwards, used copies of this book will be readily available here at Amazon for $.01. Plus $3.99 for shipping via Media Mail.

A thrilling election season is upon us with Obama vs McCain. Michael Moore's new book Mike's Election Guide 2008 provides Democrats a way to gain numerical majorities in the House and Senate. Moore's book provides ten Presidential Decrees for Obama's first ten days, should he win the election. Among the ideas are reinstating the draft, criminalizing health care profiteering, and banning commercials in movie theaters.

The book is Democratically biased; Republicans may be offended by some statements. This book has questions and answers, some of which are tongue in cheek, but generally hit upon issues which are important to voters. In one answer, Moore talks about the donations of party faithful and what they get in relationship to high roller lobbyists. He says for a $25 contribution you get "... a guarantee that every presidential speech will end with that phrase that makes you feel all warm and gooey and patriotic 'God bless the United States of America'. Cough up a lot more and you've got a front row seat at the trough."

Moore has a number of ideas attempting to solve America's campaign issues. McCain and Obama have similar platforms which do not address these issues. True universal health care is not advocated by either candidate. Moore feels we should provide it free of charge similar to fire and police protection. Social Security is not being contributed to fairly by those who earn more than $102,000.00 per year. Mike says, raise the limit!

Homeland Security is addressed by a novel approach. "Defeat Al Qaeda and the Next Generation of America-Haters by Building Wells." Providing pure and fresh drinking water for people of the world will cost little and do a lot. Moore points out that $10 per person is all it will take to dig a well in any country with our current technology. Clean, safe drinking water will enhance our standing with the people of the world.

Don't miss out on Mike's Election Guide, as this is a great year to be an American, and a voter. Get in on all the fun! I recommend this book.

I loved reading this, even though I was often filled with a sense of dread and worry. Just listen to the title of the second chapter: "How to Elect John McCain... or, How Many Democrats Does It Take to Lose the Most Winnable Presidential Election in American History?" Hopefully, that's not how things go, but Moore puts it out there. "Ask Mike!" is another chapter, where people ask such hard-hitting questions as "which presidential candidate do I want to have a beer with?" and "if I have to move north of the border after the next presidential election because McCain has won, what do I need to know about Canada and Canadians?", which is something I've always wanted to know. You'll also get proposals on how to fix our broken elections, what to do once the election is over, and a handy candidate guide for several senate and the house seats. And if you hate Michael Moore, he's provided you with a chapter of lines taken out of context for you to use when telling people how awful you think the book is. Generous!

The book was funny, informative, and thought-provoking. It will make you want to go out and talk to people, and not just about the election. I've been going on about Social Security, health care, and the evils of high fructose corn syrup. You learn about the history of the Pledge of Allegiance, why our election is on a Tuesday and why it SHOULD be on a Saturday or Sunday, why the American people actually pay MORE taxes than the French and get so much less for it, and how wells could help America's image. If you love the Daily Show or Corbert Report, this is like one long episode in print form. Yes!

Okay, so I highly recommend this book. Go buy it or check it out from you library! Go... now!

It's a wonderful world we live in when someone like Mike Moore can comment on our auto industry, our election process, and our health care industry. Truly we were once the formidable force that set the bar for the rest of the world. Now our leaders sit in bars trading away our freedom, our finances, our security, and most importantly, the peace of mind that goes with being "number one".

Now that we're somewhere around Cuba for health care, and past 20th on most measures of a successful culture (infant mortality, lifespan, math and science scores, etc.) we see our leaders sell us out to the same idiots who got us into this mess. And this book was written BEFORE the failure of the banking industry and mortgage houses.

I see Mike as a hero who speaks his mind despite the aggravation of dealing with the "right". He gets my vote, and he's not even running!

Michael Moore's Election Guide 2008 is entertaining, thoughtful, and at times, enough to make one laugh out loud. Typical of Moore's delightful abilities (depending on one's political proclivities, I suppose) are sidesplitting anecdotes both historical and hysterical, as well as flights of fancy that are unforgettable. Included, for those of us who tend toward the regional and just the "main event" races, is an excellent rundown of crucial House and Senate contests throughout the U.S. The book is an excellent "easy reference" for those of us who want a quick overview of the Democratic scene countrywide.

A little book that has to be read in three hours at the most and on the outside. Pungent with hot language, fragrant with nice flower names for disgusting stinking old bald politicians, packed with a few truths and many truths and a half. This book is brilliant and it is already three months old, June 2008. Of course he could not envisage the time when the George of the White House was going to nationalize the American banking system. He could not imagine either that China was going to buy Rothschild and the Japanese another New York bankrupted bank, but the Federal Government - what does he say the McCain about less government? - buying out the failed banking system in its nearly total globality, that was unimaginable even to the most hazardous minds just two weeks ago. But George did it. A real George as the French used to say before they started to call those people who are slightly mentally impaired cakes and then some other bird names. But the Guide is still valid. Valid about the failed American electoral system that is absolutely not democratic since it can declare elected someone who has not been elected, and even decide that millions of ballots can be nullified by a Supreme Court decision. Right he is that the Democratic party is not very swift when it comes to winning elections. They must be forced to win, forced by fate, forced by the three weird sisters beyond there who spin, measure and cut the thread of our life. A whole legion of walkyries are necessary to chase the Democratic Party into winning an election? It is so much more comfortable to lose and be an eternal opposition. Yet there is a fair chance that Obama will win, that the two houses of Congress will have a comfortable and reinforced democratic majority, and it is even possible that they get the famous three fifth majority so much needed for all constitutional amendments and overruling the President's veto. And yet they may lose the Presidential election if they do not react fast and fight with more pugnacity the opponent, in fact the opponents because the Republican party decided to have two horses harnessed to the single cart of the presidential ticket, two horses if we want, because it is a way of speaking since one is an old nag and the other is a zebra of a potentially convicted power abuser. But the system being what it is Obama will only win if he is able to bring five to ten million new voters into the game, the battle, the fight, the final guerilla warfare confrontation and conflagration. So you better hurry up and volunteer. The first ten reforms of the first ten days of this reformistic presidency are funny for some, evident for others and always full of sense, if not always of common sense. He is not always well informed, for example about the French social system or health care system. It's true he apparently got his information from the French embassy. He might have been better inspired to ask someone who really knows, not an ambassador who has never had any real problem with anything in his life. Hardships are a lot better as a school than the silver spoon you are born with in your mouth in the big diplomatic families of the French republic. But the best part is his suggestion to get all the corpses and bandits occupying the White House out of it in a perpetrator walk excellent. That's all they deserve and I think that perpetrator walk should be advertised so that as many discontented people could come with rotten eggs and over-ripe tomatoes to adorn their faces qui red and yellow and white, the tricolor flag of yellow bellies, liars, thieves and other perambulating dead people we have forgotten to bury. Please catch up on that urgent task and make them walk an infinite line between two rows of angry citizens. Don't kill them please, just shame them for life and make sure everyday they will be reminded with their lies, thefts, crimes, murders, etc. Rush to this little book and read it before the night is out.

This year has been one of the crazier ones in politics that I can remember -- and I've been voting for over thirty years now, having seen a great many politicians come and go -- mostly go. And sadly, trying to keep up with it all on the television or the Internet is an exhaustive chore, beset with mind-numbing propaganda and enough spinning to make a spider look like a lazy bum.

As I've been a fan of Michael Moore since he released The Big One, I figured I would give his latest book a try to give me some understanding of what I'll be facing when I step into that booth come November 4, 2008 and make my selections. Given with his usual tinge of sarcasm, and is this really happening? angle, I found Mike's Election Guide 2008 to be a dizzying turn through the issues.

The cover, in brilliant primary colours, and a beaming Mr. Moore on the front, is presented in a mock-tourist-guide format. It's a blend of very tongue-in-cheek and more than a little seriousness dished up in a series of essays and occasional rants.

This time, Mr. Moore goes after the Republicans in a big way, and at times, in way that made me a little uneasy. At times the tone gets a bit on the crazed side, but if you sift, there's still some nuggets of true inspiration and knowledge in here. More importantly, there's some information that everyone in America should think about.

The first section, "Ask Mike!" is a series of questions and answers, mostly by (I hope) fictional people and a quickie lesson in basic civics for those of us who were too tired to pay attention in high school. Little bits such as what are the Electoral College, why Canadians think we're the crazy neighbors living downstairs, and other burning topics such as gay marriage, McCain's temper, and other delights. I felt that most of it was downright silly, but there are a few bright spots.

The second section, however, is pretty likely: How to Elect John McCain... or How Many Democrats Does It Take To Lose the Most Winnable Presidential Election in History? And it's pretty much that simple. My usual cynical nature kicked in at this point, and I just read in grim horror at where things are likely to go in the next 54 days.

Ten Presidential Decrees for His First Ten Days and Six Modest Proposals To Fix Our Broken Elections are interesting, and thought provoking. These, and the last chapter, I found the most interesting to go through, and I found myself agreeing with some of them. Here Mr. Moore does cycle back the ranting a bit, and at least, what he mentions here will give the reader some food for thought.

One Last Job To Do When the Election is Over: All I am going to say about this one is that I can't agree more. You'll have to read it and decide for yourself.

Why you need to read this book:
Go to page 157, and look at the lists of candidates that are up for reelection this year in the House of Reprensentives and Senate. Yes, it's that important -- remember, if you don't get out there and vote this year, whether to put them back in, or get someone new into the seat, you're pretty much saying hey, I think they're doing a great job in Washington, DC! And that's fine by me; it's free country, and you can pretty much do as you like.

But if you're not happy, and you want to see someone from your state get his or her rump booted out, go on and see if your senator or representative is listed here. It's edifying reading, and Michael Moore makes no secret of his displeasure at the Republicans (mostly) who are up for reelection.

To be honest, I don't blame him. Our poor country is in dreadful financial shape, and Our Fearless Leader makes Tricky Dick look like an upright moral politician. More time and money and lives have been wasted in the last eight years, and the American people more abandoned than ever, and I for one would love to see a change in this country.

So, summing up, this makes a good concise, if a bit on the tinge of screaming at the choir, reading. Myself, I don't much care which party is running the country, as long as they hunker down and do their job and at least attempt to make things right. I personally feel that a person's politics are their own, and none of my durn business. But I also feel quite strongly that if you don't vote, then don't whine to me about how awful things are. Didn't vote in the last general election? Then you cast a vote for the incumbents. Period.

Educate yourself. There's still time to register to vote in the next election. If enough angry people step into the booth, and make their choice, then there's a fighting chance.

This book is in largish type, and is a very quick read -- I was through it in less than an hour and a half, and found myself nodding in agreement in spots. Other times I was cringing, but I was also thinking. If you can handle Michael Moore's style of rhetoric, then by all means take this one in.

Five stars. Or not. Depends on your point of view.

I have a sort of love/hate thing going with Michael Moore--I generally like his ideas but hate his delivery of them. Reading a book by him is the perfect compromise. He's a very smart man hiding behind being a goofball a-hole. There are lots of interesting things in this little paperback, and sources are sited for the doubting kind. There's even a section of quotes taken out of context so that the right wing talking heads don't have such a hard time digging stuff up on him. He figures they are about to have a VERY bad few years and he can afford to be generous to them. All in all, it is an informative, thought provoking, worthwhile read, with, of course, plenty of humor.

I am a pretty big Moore fan and I read his previous works Stupid White Men and Downsize This and Dude Where is my Country and I almost went no.1 in my pants from laughing. This last book however was not as good. He did have his always refreshing sarcasm and witty political insight but he sounds much more depressed than usual. I think everybody is depressed but the book is pretty morbid its like the 04 election took the wind out of Mike's chest. I still think it's a good read and would recommend it but let's hope he focuses and defeats, a man who sold his soul to get elected, McCain.

You have to get the audio book for the true Michael Moore experience. Mike decided to narrate this book himself. He comes off as a snide, angry crazy man.

The hard copy version is helpful when looking up Mike's facts. He really likes to use half truths and unequal comparisons when measuring the USA versus the rest of the world.
