I'm taking a VB 2005 class in college and the book we are using is not for a true beginner (VB 2005 How to Program by Deitel), it is very fast paced and confusing at times. The book also uses console programming through most of the book (VISUAL BASIC!!! VISUAL IS THE KEYWORD); I dont know how it got a good rating. Anywho, in order to learn VB better I hunted down this book. It is well written and easy understood. He uses nice concepts and examples. I've learned more in the first 3 chapters of this book than I had the book for school. I'm half way through and understand everything I have done up to now. I would totally recommend this book to anyone who is a true beginner.

This book will get you going on using visual basic and visual studio 2005. I had last used visual C++ V6.0 in an academic setting, and this book helped me migrate to the latest version of visual studio and the VB.NET language quickly. The code examples provided are easy to use, and understand. I found the organizarion of the book to be just right. Now I want more.

I know PL/SQL, SQL, PHP, some Bash scripting skills and can "read" Java to a certain degree, but am new to the world of developing Windows apps, and was looking for a book to start building applications in VB .NET 2005. Unfortunately, I'll have to look elsewhere.

This book does a great job of guiding the reader trough the basic features of VB .NET 2005. Every chapter, and every section includes some basic examples, which you can either build yourself, or study from the included examples CD.

If you're totally new to programming, this is the book for you. However, if you already have experience with any programming language, this book will not do much for you. I only rate this book 4-stars because of its value as what it IS: an introduction to the language (I breezed through it, examples and all, in about 8 hours).

This book is well suited for beginners or near-beginners who want to learn basic programming in VB2005. Sometimes I felt it would have helped if I had had some earlier programming knowledge/experience, this way I would have been able to grasp the consepts easier as this book does not really discuss programming-theory on a broader level. It is a good book to start with if you plan to learn more about programming in asp.net.

Study each chapter, type in and compile the samples and by the end of the book you'll have a good "basic" understanding of the subject. This is a good place to start for someone who has never used BASIC.

Probably the most helpful of the basic programmers class books, the author has considerable experience outside the computing world and consequently is able (at least for me) to put his message across clearly to the rest of us humanoids. And with humour!

This book is very good for the beginning VB.net programmer but lacks some topics if you wish to use it as a reference book. I would like to see this book have some information on stored procedures and triggers.

This book brings you up to speed very fast. I was a complete novice but now using Visual Basic to write a program in my dissertation.

The only downside is that you have to get Visual studio separately, it would have been a nice addition even if at an extra cost or charged separately.

I wouldn't consider my self an advance VB programmer but having used VB6 this book served as an Okay upgrade to VB 2005, the examples could have been much better, the book starts to get good in the later chapters, probably the last four or five, but I am tired of the hello world examples. so if you are completely new to Visual basic and are starting fresh with VB 2005 and never used VB 6 then this book is probably for you

I'm the type of person that has to read everything several times before I can fully comprehend the material but this book was a breeze. After I finished each chapter I felt fully confident that I could go & put what I learned to use with no trouble at all.

If you want to learn the basics of programming and have little or no prior experience, start here. I decided to buy the book after reading all the great reviews and I'm very happy I did. The book is very well organized and is full of useful examples. Every example is thoroughly explained so you're never left with any unanswered questions at the end of each chapter.

Great book! Thanks Michael.

This book was just what I needed to get started in MS Visual Basic 2005. It is well-written. The book included disk of sample programs that has been extremely helpful. The exercises in the book actually worked and taught me what I needed.

The earliest chapters are the best and most useful. Then Halvorson goes off on database and internet techniques that are redundant with programs like Access and FrontPage. But I guess some people will find them useful.

I have found, however, that I am now looking for another book to take me to the next higher level. So this is a good starter, but it is not everything you need in the long run.

For the beginning programmer, this is a perfect book. But since I'm familiar with windows and programming, some of the instructions were redundant. I guess that's why it's called step by step.

EDIT:
Also, this book is more about creating programs than actually learning programming concepts. Chapter 17, which deals with printing, is soo confusing. but that could be the language's fault.

I've read many technology books over the years, and this one is one of the most well written and organized books I've read on a technical subject. Many technical books start out well, then start to bog down with disorganization and clutter. This one stays clear and on track the entire time!

I'm new to Visual Basic and am using VB 2005 Express. I bought this book on a hope that it would work, it's excellent. I had no trouble following any examples in the book. It was clear and I actually understood what I was reading. AS I'm not new to programming (I've done Excel and Access), but to VB 2005, it helped me considerably. After finishing the book and having all working projects, I'm feeling confident to move onto the next level.

After reading "Build A Program Now Using VB 2005 Express Edition", I bought this book in the hopes of getting a lot more detail. I'm happy to say that I got alot more than I expected. Mr. Halvorson did a great job introducing the basic concepts of the language.

As someone who is returning to VB after a 5 year hiatus this book was a perfect fit. I also reccomend viewing the VB training videos at Microsoft's web site. They're FREE and make a great companion to this book.

By the way you don't need the full version of VB 2005 to go through the excercises of this book. I got through 99% of the book using the Express Editions of VB and the Web Developer. From what I remember only the "Inheritence" Form was missing...Good Luck!

Being completely new to VB programming this book has been quite helpful in that it explains concepts thouroghly and goes step by step in depth. However, it does get a little redundant even for the beginner after about three or four chapters. The wording that was nice at the beginning to understand concepts becomes burdensome. The book doesn't serve as a good reference to go outside the realm of what the book dictates. But I guess there are other books for that.

I appreciate the way the Visual Studio 2005 interface is introduced then Halvorson goes on to demonstrate how some of the most often used controls are built. The book is very clearly written and easy to understand.

This book is a "must have" book if you want to learn visual basic from the beginning in VB2005. It makes programming easy, and is written in a very nice way, so that one just want to lean more.
It introduce you to the interface of visual studio, to arrays, and to vb definitions, and even to beginning vb-database programming. You also lean using window form, and introduce you to some of the importent and very usefull components that can be applied in the programming and to make programming simple.

I have found this book does not cover any more than a book would for VB2003 or vb6 for that matter. The last 20 pages are all I really used to to get used to the dataset. This is a good book for a beginner to Visual Basic using 2005 as a starting point. But if you want all the differences and new languge changes in 2005 this isnt for you. This book shows how to do very simple things like adding a textbox, labels and doing very simple coding you can do with vb6. If you want to go farther look elsewere.

Michael Halvorson shows that he knows how to impart knowledge to others with this book. You will not be a beginner after completing the lessons in it. He presents a thorough explanation of the basics of VB 2005 programming, then provides enough of ADO.Net and Web site design to wet your appetite for more. I am not a VB 6 or Vb 2003 programmer, so I can't say how useful this book might be if you are such; but I can say that if you haven't dabbled in Vb for awhile, Michael Halvorson's book is going to show you exactly where the state of the art has progressed to...in terms that you will easily grasp.
