(Hide Review...)  Cheaply made and not worth the price
Reviewer Permalink
First off, this "book" is really tiny--11 pages that resemble someone's 3x5 note cards. The print is tiny, and aside from the laminated cover, the pages don't seem durable or well-printed. After reading the all the rave reviews, I was very disappointed when I received this. This thing is not worth the price and could be easily replaced by a dozen self-made notecards stapled together.

This is by far the worst medical "book" that I've ever purchased.

It is so worth the seven bucks. Especially if you are entering into an advance practice role. It is the best pocket size reference tool :)

This was very cheaply made. It looked like zerox copies on different color construction paper. The only nicely made part was the plastic cover and back. Not worth the price.

You should NEVER start a clinical rotation in med school without this in your pocket. ALL medical students and residents should have this.

I use this more in general practice settings, like family practice rotations. For speacialties, not so great. You can't find a better product for the price though, unless you make it yourself. Which would cost you more than the $8 it costs to buy it here.

This little quick reference is great and covers several specialty areas. I would really like to see them branch out and cover specific areas with these quick reference guides. I am in school to be an FNP, so much of this info did not apply to me. I would like something geared more toward outpatient information. If you are hospital side, you will really like this.

Packed with an abundance of information the problem is that you need a magnifying glass to really see all the information. The information is exceptional and wonderful but difficult reading the tiny print. How bout "large print for us 45y/o senior citizens?"

Maxwell's is a useful little book. Small, so it doesn't clutter up my pockets any more than necessary. Filled with information I need to have at my fingertips while caring for my patient. I have a PDA but I carry this as well and it has been worth every penny.

This is a very useful companion for all medical students, interns and probably nurses. It includes most of the important things that we always forget during writing notes or interpreting patient's lab. Strongly recommended for new students and Interns.

I think that this "book" is a valuable companion to everybody who is starting his/her career in medicine, because it explaines the exact way to write things in a chart. When you feel overwhelmed by what you have to write, during the first days in the residency and you really don't know how to put all the info in order this is a place to look. If the ACLS looks like a distant memory and something is long forgotten, just look here. If you are transfering a patient anywhere or accepting a patient from anywhere, this is the place to look at...
It is so small that it can fit anywhere, but it can help you make miracles in times of great need especially if you are an IMG

Reviewer Permalink
If you are a med student/resident and you carry nothing else in your pockets, you should have a copy of Maxwells. Even if you have a PDA loaded with all of the best medical software, you should still carry a Maxwells. It's inexpensive (especially compared to other pocket texts), it's small, it's convenient, and it's crammed with practical information that you probably wouldn't otherwise remember.

Concise summary of clinically orientated material, you will use this book over and over. Could use a few extra pages (e.g. Mg note, narcotic conversion table, etc), but there's some space to write your own additional notes. I only wish the cover pages were laminated or reinforced, since they're wearing out with constant use.

This is a necessity for every PA student on rotations. It will help you on Int Med, Fam Prac, Paeds, Ob/Gyn, Neuro, Surgery, etc.... It is very well organised, and will be your most used reference - yes, even more than your PDA! Great refresher for much of the day-to-day info (lab values, note format, GCS, H&P, etc...) learned didactic year. It is even more durable now that it has been laminated.

I lost mine in my 2nd year of medicine residency and immediately bought a new copy. i use it for quick reference material and as a guide for my discharge dictations. i find the helpful equasions and the ekg intervals especially useful. i don't use the ACLS criteria out of the book - they are too short to be really useful. Also a good place to keep brief notes - i typically write equations in the book and keep other more extensive notes elsewear

Maxwell's Quick reference is the best little book to have as a medical student. Everybody in my class had one. Helpful with ACLS and EKGs, Lab values and equations, how to write orders and dictate/write notes and how to do H & P's . Also includes OBGYN and developmental milestones for pediatrics. To top it off it has a great neurology section with charts and nerological exam helpers, including the mini-mental status, which is handy for psychiatry as well. On the back is an Eye chart. Included are several blank pages for note taking. Mine are filled up now that I am almost through residency. Fun to look back at what I wrote as a student. But, this book was a savior then, and it is still helpful now. Get it, its cheap and handy.

I picked this book up prior to day one of clinicals in medical school. Now 5 years later in residency I still refer to it on a regular basis. This is color coordinated and easy to follow sections on conversions, common normal lab values, progress notes, discharge summaries, H&P's, OP notes, Mini Mental Status exams, and neuro exams plus many more tidbits. I picked this up for 7 dollars at my bookstore, saved me many times at 2am on call. Get this, it will help you on all services. A gold standard of easy reference.

This reference is not even worthy of the free booklet references that are distributed by pharmacy manufacturers. Those free booklets that you get from drug reps are more informative than this reference except that this reference has no advertisements. There is no index. There are no tabs. If you disassembled the booklet, it would be 12 typed sheets plus some blank pages 5.5 in. X 3.25 inches. It is hard to read because of the dark colored pages and small print. If the price goes down to 2 dollars total cost, I will give it 2 more stars.

This is a great quick reference especially when writing or dictating H&P's. I seems to have all the ways that are necessary for documenting various parts of the conventional physical exam though it does not have everything. It also has normal values for various tests which is great when you just can't seem to remember what the normals are.
