I am studying for a standardized test and have been out of college for almost 20 years. This book has a great format, is easy to understand and covers every topic (as far as I can tell) for the THEA test I am about to take. A great review and refresher resource

Simple,straightforward and relevant.
I bought this book to help me prepepare for the GRE. Math is not my favorite subject but this book does a good job of tying up all those lose ends. It doesn't cost too much and its small enough to carry around in your bag. I highly recommend it.

An OK review of the material you would find on most standardized entrance exams. Covers arithmatic, algebra, geometry and word problems. The only drawback is it is a small book with small print, and doesn't have much room inside of it for working problems out like larger prep books, such as Kaplans. You get what you pay for.

I am a private math tutor and a student of mine had purchased this book to assist in his ACT preparation. I found it extrememly helpful as a general math review, regardless of which test one is preparing for, and purchased a copy myself to assist other math students in the future. There is high emphasis on word problems, and almost all aspects of basic math (approaching calculus) are addressed with thorough explanation, answer keys, and knowledge tests. I would highly recommend this to anyone seeking a quick refresher that will aid in understanding math concepts for years to come.

This book is the first that I have encountered that can actually TEACH me math. All of the others that have tried have just gave me a headache. It starts with the most basic concepts and works its way into the more complex. If you are preparing for the GRE or SAT yourself, this book is worth way more than what you'll pay for it on Amazon. Without it, I would have been completely, utterly, lost.

One suggestion, though: If you're planning on taking the GRE, you should also purchase another prep book specifically for the test such as The GRE Test for Dummies, Fifth Edition. That way, you can see exactly what you need to study from the GRE book and skip all of the extraneous material in the Cliffs. This book is extremely comprehensive and without taking this step, you'll likely be spending time on a lot of things that won't show up on the exam.

I cannot tell you how much I love this book. I was preparing to take the GRE after graduating college and hadn't taken any math whatsoever since high school. I used Kaplan's Premier program and it brought back some of what I used to know, but I was still getting about half the questions wrong on my practice tests. I got this book a week before I took the test, was able to go through the whole thing in a week (while working a 40 hours a week) and it really built my math skills from the ground up. It really assumes you know nothing, but by the end, you know all you need to!

I just took the test this morning and my quantitative score was 800 - totally unexpected and it would not have happened if I had just stuck with the Kaplan program.

This book was very informative. I used it to study for my college entrance exam and placed much, much higher than I would have without a review. It is a very good book if you need a general math refesher, as it covers all areas. It is clear and concise and provides great test questions with thorough answers. I have bought a copy for both my brother and sister who are in college and I would definitely recommend this book to you!

In high school I despised math but understood a lot of the concepts—that is, when I studied. Ten years after graduating college, I'm in line to take the GRE and needed a book that would be a great refresher course. But only on the aspects of math I needed to know.

Jerry Bobrow has written a well organized book that explains complex mathematical concepts in simple terms. Its structure takes you through arithmetic, algebra I, algebra II, and geometry (in that order), followed by some additional material that appears only on certain tests (such as quantitative comparison questions for the GRE). Each of these sections begins with a diagnostic test that helps you determine the scope of your knowledge.

A cautionary note: The book also delineates the types of math questions found on different types of standardized tests. While the laws of physics obviously haven't changed since '85 (the year of this book's first printing), any information about specific tests may be outdated and should be cross-checked. For example, the book states that for the GRE you do not need to know algebra II even though the book covers this. I cross-checked this information in a contemporary source and found it still to be the case.

I ordered this book based largely on the recommendations that other Amazon customers left. Now that I've taken the GRE, I wanted to endorse it as well. I have a background that lacked math; I needed one math course to graduate college, took a basic algebra course and didn't do that well. Obviously I was concerned about the prospect of taking a standardized test 8 years later! This book assumes that the reader knows nothing, and is incredibly clear and concise. There were a few examples that seemed to skip a visual step but for the large part, I couldn't have fared half as well as I did without it. I found it especially helpful with addressing and solving word problems. Definitely invest the money, this book is worth every penny.

I really liked this book (how could I not with such a huge increase in my score). It's very easy to use, and you can practice a lot of math in a very little amount of time. I hadn't done algebra since freshman year of high school and needed some serious review for the GRE. This book was a big help in boosting my score. I also used the Kaplan and Princeton Review books, but this one had the best/easiest/most-intense math review. It is also incredibly cheap. Fair warning: there are a lot of practice problem sets in this book, and it took me a good month to work through it all, but it was worth it.

I didn't - well not much of it. I used this for the GRE but it applies to many tests. There are quick tests for each section to help you know what you need to study with matching text pages for quick reference. This is a great review text if you are short on time. Helps the test taker zero in on what you don't know and easy ways to refresh a dead memory. For me, the geometry section is extremely helpful.

This book is useful as a self-check and as a compendium of sample problems, but it is a poor teacher. It uses "the sort of language which buries the ideas" and is twice or three times as lengthy as need be.

Let me give an example. On page 122, "If x is a positive integer in the equation 12x = q, then q must be: (A)a positive even integer; (B) a negative even integer; (C) zero; (D) a positive odd integer; or (E) a negative odd integer.

The book solves this problem by trial and error, "plug in some numbers and see what happens." This unfortunate technique is used even though composite numbers and primes were discussed earlier. The algebra of even numbers (say E) and odd numbers (say O), and of positive numbers (say +) and of negative numbers (say -) and of course zero (0) would serve much better, briefer, and broader. I mean such things as E x E = E, E x O = E, etc., and + x + = +, + x - = -, etc.

What needs to be understood is that standardized test questions often (perhaps even usually) involve a "surface" question with a probe into some "deeper" concept. This Brobow, et al, book works strictly on the surface. "Not an idea in a carload" to paraphrase an old motto from the cranberry industry! Most unfortunate; a lost opportunity.

Many testtakers dread the quant sections of standardized tests more than the rest of it put together, and no wonder. The subject is often badly taught in the first place, and math is where adult students contemplating the GRE or GMAT are likely to be weakest. No matter how much math you avoided in high school or college and in your working life, you can still make up years of lost ground with this book. Really! Spend an hour a day with it and be transformed. You may not learn to love math but your skill and confidence will increase exponentially. Much better than the math sections in general GRE prep books...and most textbooks for that matter.

If you have only enough money to buy one book to brush up on the quantitative section, this should be the book. It assumes no knowledge and delves into each section of math thoroughly. However there is also a diagnostic test so that you don't have to waste time studying topics you're already solid in. It is easy to understand with many examples and is much better than any of the GRE study guides for math that I've seen. There is a lot in the book so allow for at least a month with it before an exam.

I had to study for the College Level Assesment test in FL, and I hadn't had a math class since my sophomore year in high school! This book was fantastic to sit down with and review things that nobody remembers (like fractions...eek!) and some of the things that I had never learned (like some of the algebra).

There is an assessment test at the beginning to show you what you most need to work on, and tells you on what page to find that information. There are also several practise tests, as well as pages that explain the problems, in detail, so that you can figure out what the heck you did wrong! :-)

This is a fantastic review session, and I would recommend it for the GMAT (studying for now) or any other standardised tests over ANY of the other books I had purchased!

This was an outstanding book that helped me with college algebra and I know it will help me and my wife in the near future with our children! It gets right to the point. You do not search for "hours" looking for assistance. Even though it lacks an index, the table of contents is organized in such a manner for speedy searches.
