Not for the faint of heart, this comic tells the tale of a Marvel Universe gone terribly wrong where all your favorite hero's (and villians) are now turned into zombies w/ an unstopplable appetite. Witness these "marvel zombies" scheme up plans to find more food at the same time w/o killing each other. All in all good chessy fun.

The only "down side" to this book is that it does not really have much depth to it. But there is plenty of great scenes and sub stories that sparked the creation of "Dead Days" and "Marvel Zombies 2."
You want to read a superhero story that makes you cringe every couple of pages while giving you an entirely new angle of superheroes? This is perfect for you. ::Spoiler:: I died a little inside when the Silver Surfer was eaten (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-19 00:27:26 EST)

I got Marvel Zombies today and I just got done reading it. Marvel Zombies is a very short read. I was hoping it would have been longer because the action and violence are pretty good. The beginning is well but the book gets repetitve. The Zombies speak to each other which makes them seem too human. The story should have focused on a group of survivors instead of super powered Zombies. The survivors could have been led by a super hero like the Punisher or Nick Fury. It seemed like they threw in any character that popped into their head. Having the greatest Marvel Heroes turn into zombies is a good idea but they just didn't pull it off. I hate it when they talk about flesh being so good because it's sounds very cheesy. Anyways, I was hoping for more.

The first issue of the mini-series covers everything the reader needs to know, so the rest is just there to build up to the completely senseless ending. I guess the only "rule" in this universe is that, if a Marvel zombie wants to eat you, it can. It doesn't matter if you are invulnerable, inhuman, bloodless or (insert your word here), you are going to be zombified. The story is a novelty, but the ending sets the stage for an endless series of sequels that will be more of the same. Where's Stan Lee when you need him?

If you like the Walking Dead, you know you'll like this one. This is a fun read. You can't take it seriously, it's just for fun, it's about zombies, not some serious piece of literature. Have fun with this one.

I was very excited about receiving this compilation. The idea is very unique and pretty well thought out. I'm not a huge fan of the whole zombie idea in general, but combine it with Marvel characters and I'm sold. The back story is a little lacking which I guess is why some people recommend reading the Army of Darkness VS. Marvel Zombies before this one. I didn't so I can't really say anything about that. The story was fun, the artwork was excellent. The artists took old Marvel comic covers and redid them as zombie characters which is a very neat idea.
To me though the story was lacking something, I can't quite put my finger on it, but something just seemed to be missing. Aside from that I'd say give it a read. It's quick, the price is right and I don't think you'll be disappointed. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-09 10:51:14 EST)

Robert Kirkman has rarely had a miss in his short comics career. His "Walking Dead" series of zombie survival dramas is nothing short of brilliant, his "Irredeemable Ant-Man" was one of the funniest books on the market during its year in print at Marvel and even "Brit" is an underrated gem. In many ways, though, "Marvel Zombies" was the first time he was faced with real expectations, and fell short.
"Marvel Zombies" is exactly what the title promises--all the Marvel comics characters eventually become zombies, and they run around, eating one another and fighting and eating and fighting. Zombies with powers is a neat concept, but it doesn't go much further than that, leaving the reader to wonder just what's so great about the concept that it couldn't have been explored in ten pages of "Ultimate Fantastic Four" instead. What a stupid concept, right? Spiderman, Colonel America, The Hulk, The X-men and all the rest of the Marvel Super-heroes turn into zombies. Dumb, no?
NO! Marvel Zombies was one of the more pleasant surprises that I've come across in long long while. Robert Kirkman, Creator of The Walking Dead series (The Walking Dead Book 1, The Walking Dead, Book 2, The Walking Dead Book 3, The Walking Dead, Vol. 7: The Calm Before & The Walking Dead Volume 8: Made To Suffer), knows how to do a zombie story. And he does Marvel Zombies just as well as he does the aforementioned Walking Dead series. Marvel Zombies is an exceptionally well-done tale of what would happen in the universe where some of our favorite super-heroes exist. What happens? Well, our super-heroes win, of course...but us normal folk don't see it as a win, that's for sure. We're talking taking super-heroes and turning them into super-zombies. Do the math....It's Doomsday, people. This story is extremely well-written, and there's no need to have ever read or seen a single comic book to appreciate Marvel Zombies. And this release couldn't be more timely with the blockbuster movie releases of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four - Rise of the Silver Surfer coming out almost simultaneously. A couple of the characters in those movies have big roles in Marvel Zombies. Do you like zombie flicks? Do you enjoy the Marvel super-hero stories? Yes? Then Marvel Zombies is a terrific, enjoyable, quick read that you'd be remiss to deprive yourself of. Check it out. (And then don't miss the prequel: Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness where some real "Ash" kickin' gets done!) (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-01-03 01:38:28 EST)

You can't really read Marvel Zombies and take it seriously--and you shouldn't either. While the artwork is great (the cover parodies are fantastic), the dialog is stupid, and it's all really, really gross (but intriguing). You have to love it for what it is...a totally twisted B-rated parody of the Marvel universe.
The characters act completely volatile and self-serving after being zombified, but they are at least true to themselves (ex- Peter Parker is still whiny and ansty, Bruce Banner has issues with being the Hulk, and Wolverine is still quick with the claws and dripping sarcasm). There is also a small story that surrounds survivors which gets continued in more detail in later issues. Overall, it was a fun read, and amusing to see overly "perfect" characters turned into greedy human-eating creatures (making Capt. America the "leader" was the best). So, if you love cheesy horror flicks and you love Marvel (but aren't above seeing beloved Marvel characters mutilated and turned into flesh-eating monsters) this series is a must-have. When Marvel Zombies was first announced I had been away from reading the superhero titles from DC and Marvel. I'd gone fully into non-superhero titles. One such title is Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead. Kirkman finally created a story which really tapped into what Romero was talking about in his Living Dead films. Kirkman's zombie series continued where the film end credits began. To suddenly find out that Kirkman was to pen a "What If...?" style miniseries for Marvel telling the tale of what would happen if the Marvel Universe (well on of its alternates at least) and all its heroes and supervillains had suddenly all turned into flesh-eating zombies was great news indeed.
Marvel Zombies continues where the Ultimates Fantastic Four "Crossover" story-arc left off (story-arc where we're introduced to the Marvel Zombies alternate universe). The Ultimates Fantastic Four has made it back safely to their Ultimates reality through the assistance of an unzombified Magneto. In the very first pages of Marvel Zombies we find Magneto on the run from those superheroes and villains turned zombies gunning for him. With these super-powered zombies having devoured the planet's population within days they're now set to hunting down, and at times, fighting with each other for the last few remaining people left on Earth for them to feed their hunger. This being titled Marvel Zombies and not Magneto should give a hint as to the fate of the Master of Magnetism. No, this book deals with how the Marvel Zombies silve through their problem of not having anymore people to eat. It's a good thing that in this reality Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer, have decided it was time to add Earth to the Devourer of Worlds' menu. Unbeknownst to the Silver Surfer and Galactus, a planet they once thought to be teeming with life and energy to be consumned has become a death world where only the zombified Marvel heroes and villains remain. The scenes once the Surfer and Galactus arrive were both action-packed and also full of some very dark humor. It was very difficult trying to root for anyone since in the end everyone left in the story were the "bad guys" but where the Surfer and Galactus were the serious villains in the story the Marvel Zombies themselves were funny enough in their need to take down Galactus and his Herald to feast on. The aftermath of the battle between the remaining Marvel zombies and Galactus makes for a great twist and also makes sense in a darkly humorous and wicked way. Kirkman doesn't dwell too much on the nature of the zombie plague's effect on people's humanity and feelings. He goes all-out to tell a fun, rip-roaring story. It shows in that there's a little less depth in the book's story than in Kirkman's Walking Dead series, but what the story lacks in dramatic depth was made up for in some very funny and witty dialogue between the zombies themselves. The artwork by Sean Phillips (been a fan of his style since his work on Sleeper) complimented well with Kirkman's zombie writing. I also like the fact that this graphic novel collected all the Marvel Zombies issue covers (both first and later reprintings) by renowned artist Arthur Suydam. His zombified alternate covers of classic Marvel issue covers was something of a great treat for comic book fans everywhere. So, while Marvel Zombies doesn't rise to the dramatic depths of The Walking Dead what it does do is tell a fun story of zombies versus Cosmic beings with plenty of flesheating and bloody good action. I'm glad that as great as Marvel Zombies was I'm even gladder that Marvel decided to re-visit this oft-kilter universe with some follow-up miniseries like Marvel Zombies vs The Army of Darkness and Marvel Zombies 2. This is a completely ludicrous story, but, still fun. Turn all the heroes in the Marvel Universe into zombies, and have them go down and track down and eat the few holdouts, survivors, and others, including people like Magneto.
Then, once they have eaten everyone, maybe they can find some other really big otherworldly food sources. The title itself, is, of course, self-parody. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-26 08:20:45 EST)

This is one of the best graphic novels I've read in a long time!Robert Kirkman was born to write zombie stories.I dont think this is as good as the walking dead but it still a wonderful read.My only complaint is that I thought this story should've been a little longer.I bet i finished this book in a half an hour tops. The art is pretty solid and stay with the story I have to give marvel credit for not holding back on the gore!

This comicbook from the maker of the excellent "Walking Dead" series, is truly the best thing I've read in quite some time. I'm not gonna lay out any facts about the story or so but if you're a fan of either marvel superheroes or zombies this is the thing for you! Also, this edition of Marvel Zombies comes with a nice hardcover and some sweet treats inside for collector freaks like myself. I highly recommend this product!

I love this series. I'm just finishing up the entire collection so I needed this. The best part is that I got the "First Printing" as shown. I was worried it would have been something else, but I was wrong. Has all the previous covers from Marvel Zombies and Ultimate Fantastic Four in the back.
I've seen this first printing being offered on EBay for $45. Get it here. It's worth it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-08-03 09:44:56 EST)

Yes, the name says it all! "MARVEL ZOMBIES!" What was once an "affectionate" term to describe Marvel's loyal and passionate fans, Mark Millar transformed it into something both literal as well as "ULTIMATE" and then the Powers That Be (ie: Marvel Execs - the OTHER type of zombie that one should really fear!) decided to turn it into a whole cottage industry of it's own. It's just a shame that the whole series isn't better conceived and written. Leaden dialogue abounds that not even Magneto can work some magic on (And yes, if you find that little "pun" weak, that's just about how ham-fisted and lifeless a lot of the dialogue really is!). Zero plot to speak of. Zero suspence. And yet, despite all that, it still manages to entertain - albeit in a slight and unmemorable way.
Mark Millar's initial use of these characters and concepts were rife with tension and imagination. The whole idea itself screams stupid, and Millar, the master writer he is, elevates it to that of sheer, sublime brilliance. Which is then reduced to the basest of camp and by-the-numbers action that just underwhelms. Don't get me wrong, Kirkman is a gifted writer (INVINCIBLE is a great comic!) but MARVEL ZOMBIES just comes across as workman-like. At the very least, some major conflict between the heroes and villains-turned-zombies would've made for some great scenes. Maybe even seeing old foes teaming up to gather "food" (for example) would have made for some witty exchanges. Instead we are "served up" a simple "plot" involving the Silver Surfer being snacked on and then Galactus being the lusted-after main course. And that's really about it. Ho-hum! Let's just hope that Marvel do one of two things with this so-called franchise: either, 1. think up some more imaginative meals to add to the menu, or 2. simply throw it in the trash with all the other left-overs! NICE COVERS BY SUYDAM and SUITABLY BRUTAL ART FROM SEAN PHILIPS CERTAINLY ELEVATE THIS SERIES! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-27 22:26:47 EST)

In the beginning there was an incident (spelled out in the 1-shot comic "dead Days" that is available now) that began spreading a contagion unlike any that the world had ever seen. Zombies began appearing, first The Avengers and then those that came in contact with The Avengers, until the heroes found themselves outnumbered, in hiding, and then non-existent. Quoting the beginning of the book, "after they ran out of food, Reed Richards devised a plan to lure his counterpart from another dimension into a deadly trap," basically allowing him to eat him. The plan was foiled by Magneto, however, and this begins the part where mutants turn on mutants as a source of food and where the Earth trembles under the weight of flesh-devourers - and a Herald of something more.
When I first read Marvel Zombies, I was shocked by what I found. I honestly was surprised that Marvel allowed the book to be printed in the first place - and then to basically turn their beloved characters into flesh-eating zombies that were bent on hunting down survivors just to satiate their hunger for a few more minutes? It was such a beautiful thing. I also found the work of Robert Kirkman to be amazing - I was accustomed to his work with his series The Walking Dead and I have to say that this totally blew it out of the water. This isn't to say that Kirkman's work isn't good, to the contrary The Walking Dead is a storyline that keeps a reader coming back BUT the addition of Sean Phillips as the artist and June Chung as the colorist seems to have added a little something more (Walking Dead was done in Black and White, By the Way). Basically, you have the self-professed "zombie guy" of comics (a title he doesn't want, mind you, but that he seems to have gotten) being given total control over the Marvel Universe in the middle of a Zombie Holocaust - and the things he is allowed to do are beautiful in their composure. Add in the fact that you have a really strong story, some twists you don't account for, and an ending that made me laugh and you have a thing of beauty. One thing about this series - there is nothing for the kids here. The series is really gruesome, allows itself to target anyone and anything, and repeatedly shows the things that zombies like to do. It pulls no punches and there are no heroes in this series. Still, that's the beauty of it. There are no heroes here. If you pick it up, also pick up the one-shot "Dead Days" so you can catch the beginning of the epidemic that was released after-the-fact. It comes HIGHLY recommended. Let me start out by saying; I am no fan of Marvel. The 616 continuity hasn't appealed to me since the early 90's and the other continuities bored me after a couple of issues...So I was hesitant about buying this title, the only selling point was that it was done by Kirkman (Walking Dead). God, am I glad I gave this title a shot. It's great, not the best comic (or even zombie comic) on the market but it does a good job of doing what it was made to do; entertain zombie marks.
This book could be broken down into three real chapters; Zombies vs. Magneto Zombies vs. Silver Surfer Zombies vs. Galactus The Marvel Zombies are insane with hunger, and the only fresh meat (that they know of) is Magneto. They spend a quarter of this novel hunting him down to satisfy their munchies. After the Magneto portion of the book, Silver Surfer comes into play. He is surveying Dead World for Galactus. Once he makes himself known, the zombies go after him for a chunk of silver steak. The last portion of the book deals with Galactus, who has come to devourer the planet. All the while, there is a subplot involving the Black Panther trying to survey in Dead World. This book is wonderful, if you're a Marvel fan you'll love it and if you're a zombie fan you'll love it. I can not wait until the Army of Darkness crossover trade. BUY IT! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-17 11:33:58 EST)

As soon as I got this I dove right inot this and was immediately blown away. It is really cool and all but the "heroes" are just whinners. Have the story are them complaining about stuff while the other half actually kicks [...]. I am an average Joe that's grown out of the comic scene but still enjoy an occasional comic and even the movies, and i believe this is a must buy for anyone who is curious. No regrets on this purchase but it coulda been better. Wait til later this year for the Marvel Zombies/Army of Darkness book. That SHOULD be friggin awesome.

I believe that from the title of this review the more astute of readers would deduce that I am some one who was enthralled by the possibilities that such a title as this was capable of. The result however was disapointing to say the least. What could have been is a dark tale of reality gone hywire, our dearest heros becoming our darkest fears. What it was, is simply roughly 130 pages of our dearest heros standing around complaining. Yes they are the living dead, but their constant whining makes one long for the unintelligable moans and grunts of a more George A. Romero-esque zombie universe. Our most popular heros ie Spiderman, Wolverine the hulk are all simple background chatter, little attention is acutally paid to them. The story focuses mainly on Hank Pym, as he is un doubtably the leader of the zombie-fied heros. The outcome is a ridiculous dose of mediocracy. How much more frightening to tell this story from your average joes percpective, as he watched earths heros fall in a more traditional, savage, instinct driven beast with terrifying powers as they swept thru humanity. That would have been a story we could identify with, a story that envokes in us our most primevil of fears, the fear of being eaten alive, powerless to stop it. What we get is pages upon pages of bad puns, endless whining and a very focused tunnel visoned view of apocalyptic world from the view point of a flesh hungry superhero who is now unable to feel pain, or be killed conventionally but still manages to cry like a six year old girl who has lost her dolly

Watch as Bruce Banner the zombie pick half digested human flesh from a hole in his belly and eat it again. Witness Iron Man searching for food with nothing left to him but his head and torso. Anguish at the terror of The Black Panther being tortured by his Zombie captor. Yep, it's pretty gross, but it's executed flawlessly, with a fun, sometimes predictable, always disgusting story.
I love the cover art for each issue, including the classic Spider-Man take-offs, and the Secret Wars theme for the first issue. This hardcover is excellent value for the money, get it today. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-07-10 09:44:19 EST)

This hardcover is worth it just for the gorgeously grotesque Arthur Suydam cover gallery that "zombifies" Marvel's greatest covers of all time. The book, with writing by Robert Kirkman and art by Sean Phillips, lives up to the hype that surrounded it when it was first released. It's fun, campy, and occasionally horrific (a zombified Hank Pym sawing off the Black Panther's limbs one-by-one over a prolonged period of time to feed on...). As far as comic books go, they really don't get much better than this!

Y'know, I've been a comics fan for a really long time. I've been collecting Amazing Spider-Man since I was nine, and I've got over 400 issues. As such, I've seen some really plodding stories over the years. I've seen clumsy tales with rehashed dialogue and hamfisted scenes, usually in service to some all-encompassing crossover or tie-in.
So when I heard they were combining the idea of a zombie film and the Marvel universe, I had some excitement, but also some nagging fears. All that being said, -Marvel Zombies- has to be the worst thing I have ever seen. It's horrible on a scale that just leaves me stunned, near-speechless, and wondering what bizarre train of thought led anyone to believe this was a worthwhile project. It's way too wordy, the dialogue is flat and leaden, and the whole thing reeks of camp. The -bad- kind of camp. The kind where writer Robert Kirkman didn't seem to put any serious thought to his story, and apparently didn't think the readers were worth any, either. I can't even begin to talk about the whole Silver Surfer/ Galactus plot. Not because it's spoiler, but because it just hits a level of ridiculousness that makes computers freeze up, fourth graders scratch their heads in confusion, and Hollywood producers salivate... I really enjoyed the fresh idea of seeing your favorite Marvel heroes as demonic zombies. However, the story is about as interesting as the bulk of the zombie movies out there: just zombies stalking around, looking for more food to eat. After you've seen the zombie version rendition of each character, you quickly discover that, sadly, there's really not that much else left.

After taking a decade off from buying comics this story has got me checking comic shops regularily again! It's so popular that marvel is now doing the backstory for it. A definate must read for any zombie fan.

The idea behind Marvel Zombies makes the book worth reading, but the actual story line leaves something to be desired. The story gets repetitive with the whole "how great human flesh tastes" and "don't hog that arm" bits. This concept has so much potential that is never tapped, which is unfortunate because the possibilities are endless. Although it leaves you wanting more, it's partially because this story was somewhat unfulfilling. Believe me, I'd have loved to give this book 5 stars, but I just don't think it justifies that high of a rating.

I read these when they first came out as individual issues. When demand went sky-high for the back-issues, I sold them (for a modest profit) and purchased this hardcover with the profits as I loved the story too much to not have it within arms reach...as well as all the cool "zombie" alternate covers that were drawn. These (as well as the Ultimate Fantastic Four covers) are all included in this hard bound and makes for a special treat on top of a good story. Looking forward to the continuation (sequel and prequels).

This is about as vulger a book as Marvel puts out. It looks like it was written by a man who is two years old and can not write proper English, and the artist must have been smoking something illegel when he drew it.
Also Marvel's habit of rushing comics to trade paperbacks is a waste of time and I think all this news they say that these books sell out fast, is rubbish. No wonder so many buy video games and do not read comics anymore. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-04-01 23:20:01 EST)

Marvels Dawn of the dead.
Marvel Zombies is a good read and has nice art work with the zombie look to the heroes. The story is a stand alone of course and reads like a what if adventure with a minor smile pay off at the end. If you like horror comics or just always wondered how super powered zombies would work this is a good attemp. I have some minor issues with some of the zombies but It's a what if so what the heck. read if you like it, I did. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-04-09 13:10:22 EST)

Being a little facetious with the title, but not much. This is a hyped and praised work, that when finally sampled is a one note joke, that gets played too long.
It's a story that was well done in the original FF storyline, but here never rises much above cannibal humor. Kirkman's story and Phillip's art (which is phenomenal on his current CRIMINAL series)doing very little to interest me. I really despair of a generation that defines average work like this... as great. Ultimately not worth the money. Bought the book, and promptly sold the book. You want good horror graphic novels try Kirkman's first 4 volumes of WALKING DEAD (do not get the 5th volume, after issue #25 the series takes a sharp nosedive), Stephen King's THE SECRETARY OF DREAMS, just about anything by Richard Corben especially his HOUSE ON THE BORDERLAND, anything by Swiss artist Thomas Ott, and finally also try any of the EC ARCHIVES (especially SHOCK SUSPENSTORIES which is, for 50+ year old stories... PHENOMENAL). All of those are better purchases than this. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-04-09 13:10:22 EST)

Marvel Zombies, a miniseries written by Robert Kirkman of The Walking Dead and Invincible fame centers quite literally on its namesake: Zombies... that were once the friendly neighborhood Spider Man or the patriotic Captain America among others. But in this book, they are not neither friendly or patriotic. They are nightmares George Romero would be proud to make a movie of. See, this story deals with the implications of a world full of superheroes turned raging cannibals. Just one catch: They retain their conciousness only with an added addiction to live human meat. And let me say this now. Despite it being dark humor, there are more than a few scenes that despite being depicted by static images made me feel more than a little uneasy (The Black Panther's torture comes to mind) and I am the kind of person who watches things like Ichi the Killer or the aforementioned Romero material and walk away without so much as a cringe. I guess the concept that a hero like Spider Man would eat people makes the story that much scarrier. Granted, this title could be seen as merely a macabre and darkly humourous tale but it also works as a truly horrifying look at the zombified heroes of Marvel's pages. One way or another, the book does entertain, it just depends on your outlook on this kind of subject matter.

I would pay mucho dollars to see this on the big screen. Gone are the cookie cutter, goodie-goodie superheroes I grew up replaced by these flesh eating monsters. Perhaps it's the backstory of all these characters that adds amazing weight to seeing them become these walking nightmares. There is even character development. Character development! Of zombies!!! I haven't read comics in years but I had to grab this and I am glad I did. Trust me, if you love Marvel and horror this is for you.

The Dead Rise, and they can rise even faster with Super-Spandex and the ability to Fly, oh yes!
Calamity! A Supervirus from the darkest reaches of Outer Space has descended from the stars, ravaging Earth and turning billions into flesh-eating zombies in a matter of hours! Catastrophe! Civilization as we know it collapses, and smoke billows up over dying Cities of Earth, turned into blood-drenched abattoirs, overrun wth the Living Dead. This is a job for a Superhero! This is a Job for---CAPTAIN AMERICA! Scratch that: the Cap---well, now "Colonel" America, used to be President of the United States---is now zombified, along with pretty much all of the Earth's superheroes, looking to make you into a little slab of ground round. Wolverine? Scratch that, sport. Same deal, only Wolverine brings his own little gardening shears to the party to, well, you know, slice & dice the turkey, so to speak. Hulk? Thor? The Amazing Spider-man? Ironman? All toast. Well, actually, all superpowered superzombies, all very hungry, and all willing and able to make you---yeah, you---and our buddies, the President of the United States & the Joint Chiefs of Staff & mebbe even the Supreme Court, hiding out in that underground military base or abandoned locked-down lab,--- Toast. With a side order of Human (tastes like chicken) and a little guts for marmalade. They're mad, bad, hungry, and---in Robert Kirkman's wickedly funny "Marvel Zombies'---they're really going to take a Bite out of Crime. Or anyone else who stands in the way of Truth, Justice, the American Way---& the right to three square meals! And who can blame them? Certainly not Magneto, who has stuck around in this alternate universe long after he discovers the double-cross by the zombified alternate Fantastic Four, and shortly after he realizes that having total power over metal and ore doesn't necessarily make the best Offense against the really hungry (super-powered) Living Dead. Is a ham-sandwich by any other name nearly so tasty? Sure it is, when it's Black Panther, one of the last still human super-heroes, kept drug-addled and helpless in Giant-Man's pantry, but every-useful for a little chunk of flesh or guts or foot or leg or hand, just for munchies, and not cruel at all, but chiefly because the Marvel-Zombies retain their intellectual faculties, somewhat, but they get dumber and duller and more deranged with hunger. And given the fact that it took all of them---Colonel America, Iron-Man, The Hulk, Thor, Spider-Man, Giant-Man, the whole zombified gang---about 4 hours to do a global Mickey-D's Happy Meal, the pressing issue---the crisis for our Superheroes to Solve!---become where to form up for the next Chow-Line. It's a bit depressing, and, if you're a sensitive soul, more than a little tragic. If you really want to get bleak, read Busiek & Ross's "Marvels", to get a glimpse of all the mortal trepidation that preceded Humanity's newest rung as Super-Hero-dom's main course. Sick stuff. Sicker still is Colonel America's head as a kind of uber-ChiaPet-land fit for the spawn of vultures & ravens, exactly what happens to the Hulk's frightfully human gut when he morphs back into an undead Bruce Banner after dinner, Spidey's ability to quip (and his bouts of guilt over chomping down on Aunt May & MJ, Giant-Man's giganto-dose of remorse when it comes to chowing down on his best buddy and best girl, or even the vileness of the encounter between the Herald of Galactus, the Silver Surfer, & the Living Super-Dead---who are all too happy to greet a thousand-foot (angry) sub-sandwich! Could it be scarier? More suspensful? Less comedic? Certainly so: I would have much preferred a tale wherein the last human survivors of the Zombie Plague have holed up in Cheyenne Mountain and are using every method known to Modern Military Science to keep the lights on. But Kirkman and artist Sean Phillips have concocted a brutal little potboiler that gnaws on flesh, leaps tall buildings with a single bound, eats anything on the other side, and is even able to go interstellar---tough luck for the aliens who get to encounter Marvel Zombies version 2.0! Brutal, nasty, sick, disgusting, and positively reeking of super-powered rot, "Marvel Zombies" brings a whole new meaning to "You Are What you Eat"----or more to the point, "with Great Power comes Great Responsibility"---& a Damned Big appetite. Dig in. JSG (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-02-15 01:28:29 EST)

Marvel Zombies is a storyline that takes place in an alternate reality first introduced in Ultimate Fantastic Four, where a zombie disease infects the super-people, and they eat everybody, and including supers that have yet to succumb to zombification.
There are some great Marvel Universe tie-ins here, particularly the covers, which are zombie-world mock-ups of marvel milestone events, and character development particularly surrounding Spider-man and the Hulk are outright hilarious. Best of all, we learn that Galactus is, in fact, stoppable. This is a must read if you like comics, zombies, or anything funny. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-02-15 01:28:29 EST)

"Marvel zombies??" Isn't that what DC fans called us, back in the 1970s? Well, anyway, this is a pretty fun book, a deft yet disgusting parody of both the superhero and zombie genres, written by Robert Kirkman, whose "Walking Dead" series is a high point of living dead literature.
Here, Kirkman plays things pretty strictly for laughs... In an alternate Marvel universe, a zombie plague has turned everyone into flesh-eating zombs, and the meta-human population, being totally superpowered and all, easily hunts down all the plain old human beings and eats 'em all in a relatively short time. Then what? Time to pick on each other! Usually in zombie stories, the gore is held in reserve for dramatic effect, and the zombies are handicapped by being slow-moving, mute and unintelligent... Here, though, Kirkman breaks the rules by having all our favorite Marvel heroes -- Spider-Man, The Avengers, The Hulk, etc. -- not only fully cognizant, but with their original personalities intact, and having hilarious conversations with each other, as they blast apart the rubble of post-apocalyptic New York. And there is no shortage of mayhem, either! If you've ever wanted to see your favorite superheroes really get messed up -- with limbs coming off, etc. -- then this book is for you. Mostly, though, it's the macabre sense of humor that makes this book so much fun... It's icky and gross, but very, very funny. Not the greatest literature ever, but it'll still stick to your ribs. Marvel: Zombies vies with the Maxx title "Fury" for the most amusing, laugh-out-loud Marvel production of the past five years. As writer Kirkman states in his introduction, he kept piling on gross-out after gross-out, atrocity after atrocity, and still the Marvel editorial staff just nodded and said `cool'. Zombies is such a refreshing take on the Marvel Universe compared to the usual overwrought, heavy-handed storylines that dominate so many of its titles. I just wish Kirkman had been able to abuse the X-Men some more- I would've loved to see Jean Grey, Cyclops, and all the other superhero drama queens turned into Zombie calories !
Mark Millar really deserves credit for coming up with the whole superhero zombie concept during his writing duties for the `Ultimate' Fantastic Four imprint (the company's effort to lure recent comics fans- those who liked the feature films, in particular- to Marvel superhero books without having them deterred by the more involved, ongoing plot lines found in its established titles). The only weakness of the book is Phillips's art; it has too much of a sketchy, hasty quality and needs more polish. Hopefully the next iteration of this series will provide improved artwork. At least it doesn't feature the excessively stylized, murky illustrations of "30 Days of Night" and other entries into the `modern horror' genre. All the chewing, rending, and munching is plainly depicted, which helps keep the book's over-the-top tone chugging along ! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-01-22 02:01:18 EST)

This is not the book you are expecting it to be. The Watcher doesn't come in at the end and talk about what a horrible alternate reality this is ... it just is. It's disgusting - but it's good fun.
The writing is great and Sean Phillips'art is a riot. My only disapointment is that I didn't give the title a shot when it originally came out. If only Marvel's regular titles could be this entertaining. Two thumbs up - good holiday fun. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-01-19 02:23:03 EST)

I was expecting a lot more out of this. I read the Ultimate Fantastic Four stuff and thought it could make an interesting side story, but there was no real story. no background on how it happened, no real plot, just zombies trying to eat like three people.. weak. If you ever wanted to see Capt. America have plasma beams, give it a read.

marvel + zombies? a good match it seems. readers can't help but ask questions when reading this, like 'how did someone munch through iron man's armor?' or did someone munch stark and then he put it on? seems like too much of a pain when there is human flesh to be had, but the zombies seem to have varying degrees of thinking always overriden by hunger. plus i don't think even the green rage machine could really bite off, well you'll see. and no one or nothing outside of the phoenix could take down the big g, but here it's all in good fun.

I really enjoyed this book. I can't really find a flaw with it, other than, some people might not like the ending. Spiderman is really winey through the whole thing. It is very funny and edgy. If you like marvel's heroes, or zombies you will like this book. If you like both like me you will LOVE this book.

Since the Fantastic 4 story of an alternate reality, this hardcover collection of the Zombie Marvel Universe has been overdue, and hard to find...even in your friendly neighborhood comicbook shop.
This story extends the tale, it features loads of your favorite zombied heroes and the coming of Silver "Hulk eat head" Surfer and Galactus. It also features some slick and mildly gruesome artwork. Look for the Marvel spin-off series. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-01-04 00:34:45 EST)

If you're a fan of Robert Kirkman's excellent The Walking Dead series or Invincible, you know it's going to be a reliable read. Marvel Zombies combines the Zombie element of The Walking Dead, with the silver age freshness of Invincible. Simply put, the storytelling is not only reliable, but also a ton of fun. Watch Spider-man and Iron Man play go fish while waiting for the end of the world! The art by Sean Philips, as always, is great, and his dark and moody art is a nice contrast to the almost light hearted tone of this series. The story is completely self-contained, yet vast and completely satisfying. Story and Art both get solid A's. Highly recommended.

We've seen superheros cross over, get sent to alternate realities, battle thier polar opposites, die (in some cases several times), etc, etc.
What's left? Make them zombies of course! Lots of grim fun here. Alternately darkly humorous and tragic, this interpretation of the Marvel-ites is a worthy addition to any collection. Great as a stand-alone volume, and recommended above other collections that are more "run-of-the-mill". I don't care about having "everything" in my collection. Nothing against that sort of collector, I am just not one of them. I want the (IMHO) best, the most entertaining - a broad selection that is fun to read. I was completely happy with this addition to my shelves. Buy it and enjoy! (Review Data Last Updated: 2006-12-19 01:01:37 EST)
