How do the world's top traders make millions of dollars in the markets - sometimes in a matter of only weeks or even days? That's precisely the question Jack Schwager was trying to answer when he interviewed 17 superstar money-makers including Richard Dennis, Paul Tudor Jones, Ed Seykota, Marty Schwartz, Tom Baldwin and others. After reading this best-selling book, you'll know what ingredients enable these top traders to consistently work their financial magic in the markets while so many others walk away losers. One of the top-selling trading books of all-time!

This is one of my favorite books. It's always motivating during a down trading period. Although some reviewers claim it is outdated, I think they fail to realize some of the tried and proven tenets of trading. I believe that all traders should have this on their bookshelf - both novice traders for inspiration, and veteran traders for motivation.
Note that in the above paragraph, I say "traders" and not "investors." Investors may not find this book as fascinating unless they are actively involved with their portfolios beyond "passive investing." (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-03-16 12:52:37 EST)

If you would like insights into the thought processes, trading rules and the stock trading psychology of highly successful traders, get this book...it's outstanding!
A professional trader uses his head and stays calm. Only amateurs become excited or depressed because of their trades. Emotional reactions are a luxury that you cannot afford in the stock markets. Acting out of anger, fear, or elation destroys your chance of success. You have to analyze your behavior instead of acting out on your feelings. In this book, you have the opportunity to learn from the masters and learn not only from their success, but also from their failures. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-02-06 14:15:51 EST)

For anyone familiar with the vast amount of investment literature out there, I'm sure you've come across a book written in the first half of the twentieth century called "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator." This classic tome is widely considered to be the "Bible" of trading, and it has been referenced directly or indirectly in many of the other popular books in the genre. You may have even read it yourself. For years it has been THE book to have influenced the world's top traders, but now, Jack Schwager has created the next classic work to fill recommended reading lists.
"Reminiscences..." is mentioned in several of the interviews with the "Wizards", so it is no surprise that many of the same themes are echoed throughout the book. Chronicled are anecdotes and philosophies from some of the world's greatest traders, and to have them all gathered for the reader in one place is amazingly stimulating. More than any other book, "Market Wizards" has helped me become a profitable trader. Investors routinely pay hundreds, even thousands of dollars to attend trading seminars, but don't learn nearly as much readers will soak up from these pages. I make a habit to go back and regularly review the collection of tips in the back of the book, and nothing helps me break out of a trading slump like rereading a few select chapters. For those looking for a step-by-step trading system, you may be disappointed, but if you're interested in learning from the best of the best, then there's no other choice. The interview format makes for a quick read, and it's interesting to get a glimpse of how these great men live and trade. I highly recommend "Market Wizards" and its sequel "The New Market Wizards" to anyone wanting to take the next step toward trading success. (Review Data Last Updated: 2010-01-22 14:00:52 EST)

I'm having a great time reading Market Wizards by Jack D. Schwager. It ranks right up there as one of the most interesting market books ever written. While each trader has his own peculiarities, there are some interesting common themes. I like to compare my own methods with what these wizards are doing, it gives me a way of rating what I'm doing against the very best. Early in the game I had the impression that LTBH was the "proper" way to invest. With each passing day I'm more convinced that LTBH is a way for the big guys to convince little guys to buy, hold and cherish what they want to sell to you, a.k.a. "distribution." The big guys need someone (you) on the other side of the trade!
The book most often recommended by the wizards themselves is "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator (Wiley Investment Classics)." There is a lot to be learned by listening to seasoned and successful practitioners. By providing transcripts of the interviews, the reader can get a lot closer to the wizards than if Jack Schwager had added more editorial input. The only interview which I found boring and skipped after a page or so was the one with the psychologyst, Dr. Van K. Tharp. Listening to the traders themselves is much more instructive. The question and answer format is great. The questions give you pointed perspectives about how the pros view the markets and the answers are always bound to have insights that can't be beat in another format. A massive amount of informtaion in a single source.

No long statement needed. While this book was originally published in the late 1980s, it is timeless. I am still amazed at the numbers of new traders who have not read 'Market Wizards'.

A very good read with great tips from some all time greats. It was eye opener to read about how much risk control/management and focusing on Defense was the highest priority for many of the great traders. The question/answer style flowed very well and focused on the trading style and results rather than too much on the personalities. I'm looking forward to reading Schwager's follow up "The New Market Wizards".

Market Wizards is fascinating from cover to cover. I am reading parts of it for the third time. The wisdom in this book is voluminous. Now if I would only listen to Market Wizards's lessons when I'm trading...

Book offers excellent insight into some of the best speculators, traders, and investors from the late 20th century. Well worth the read if you're serious about speculating. Some of the interviews won't apply to your method or style but it's more than possible to gleen something from each.

This is a classic. Probably one of the best, what the best traders did...and how the did it. Given many prop trading desks may never have the chance to leverage 20 or 30X, this book may turn into a classic history book!

This book is everything a book shouldn't be, cheap flimsy see through paper with blurry print. If you are going to buy this book please save your eyes and money and pick up a second hand copy from an earlier printing that you can enjoy reading. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-01-31 07:39:59 EST)

It has been very useful and important reading this book. I think every trader or the one who wants to be it should read this series of interviews. I thought I was the only one who felt and experimented all the pain, doubt and all kind of experiences when trading but I see that even the great traders have felt the same in some moment. I see that is part of the process of learning although you never stop learning. A lot of tips and ways of trading are shown in this book that will be of great help for those who read the book. I strongly recommend it.

I generally only read textbooks about trading. Statistics, technical analysis, calculus etc. However, this very entertaining collection of interviews may be my favorite and most informative read. The stories give re-assurance that an individual can succeed through their own studies, analysis and effort. If you read carefully between the lines, you can figure out how the best in the business are operating and how they are formulating their strategies.

I am kind of critical to these books. Probably half of the interviews are worthwhile to read. Some trading styles are enlightening. Last chapter is full of BS though. All in all, a good read!

I have traded off and on over the years from futures contracts, options on stocks and futures, and stocks. I have used technical analysis, fundamental, and both. I have been in and out of the market because of losses, gains, losses, and said chuck it, I will buy ETFs and Mutual Funds. But I always come back to the market and tech analysis again.
If you have found that you have a real interest in trading/investing and want to make it a career, not just because of the money potential, but because you like the hunt, analysis, and challenge, get this book. You will read real life stories of people that lost in the start, or lost it all, and then finally figured out the game (that fits their own style) and made millions. There are many PROs in the book that dish out some very insightful information. I can say it sure is encouraging to hear that these folks at times had a rough start but never gave up. Even if you do not want to buy stocks directly and just want to invest in the mutual funds, this book is really a fascinating look at the pros in this business. These folks in this book are the real pros and not just some analyst writing a recommendation to make a days wage. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-10 03:40:19 EST)

I'll be the first to admit that I read some pretty dry, boring books. This one is definitely not one of them! I read almost 100% non-fiction, with a high concentration in how-to books and biographies. This book appeals to BOTH of those appetites, AND the interviews totally swept me away in a story-like fashion. To top it all off, I really got some good insights into what successful traders do, and how I can apply that to my own trading/investment style. It doesn't matter that the book is from a different time in the markets, investigating traders who no longer trade, or who are perhaps irrelevant. Human nature evolves very slowly over hundreds of years, and those observations in this book are still dead-on. Jack D. Schwager asks the questions you want answered, and his interviews deliver over and over. An absolute must-read for any investor or trader! As some other reviewers have advised, put your trading accounts on hold until you read this one!

It IS true that we bring our personalities to trading. You can lose a lot of money really fast just by being you. Appreciate the way this book shows the attitudes of the winners - we all need a good role model.
