Many Lives, Many Masters: The True Story of a Prominent Psychiatrist, His Young Patient, and the Past-Life Therapy That Changed Both Their Lives

As a traditional psychotherapist, Dr. Brian Weiss was astonished and skeptical when one of his patients began recalling past-life traumas that seemed to hold the key to her recurring nightmares and anxiety attacks. His skepticism was eroded, however, when she began to channel messages from the "space between lives," which contained remarkable revelations about Dr. Weiss' family and his dead son. Using past-life therapy, he was able to cure the patient and embark on a new, more meaningful phase of his own career.
Psychiatry and metaphysics blend together in this fascinating book based on a true case history. Dr. Weiss, who was once firmly entrenched in a clinical approach to psychiatry, finds himself reluctantly drawn into past-life therapy when a hypnotized client suddenly reveals details of her previous lives. During one hypnosis session his client introduces the spirit guides who have been her soul therapists in between lives. This is when the story really takes off for Weiss, who discovers that these guides have specific messages about his dead son as well as Weiss's mission in life. No, we cannot verify the truth of this story using the limited scientific tools we have available. However, it is hard to dispute that this well-respected graduate of Columbia University and Yale Medical School has discovered a personal truth that has led him to be an enormously popular speaker, author, and leader in the field of past-life therapy. --Gail Hudson

Dr. Weiss has written an easy to read and fascinating book on the concept of reincarnation. It's made me think more about this belief and makes me want to read more about it and what spiritual journeys we're following. Very thought provoking.

I read this book today! It's the type of book that keep's you hanging on. It is worth reading. Weiss does not go into a lot of psychological explanation relating what happens with Catherine. The book is so well written that I read the whole thing in a day after putting it up for sale on Amazon. When I got a "sold ship now" notice, I decided to glance it over and got hooked. I don't even recall buying the book. Happy reading xara!

This book is definitely very interesting and it is a quick read so it is worth the time for anyone to pick it up and go through it. I particularly enjoyed it as I study the philosophies behind various schools of meditation and this books ties in very well with those schools of thought!

As a great believer in the value of psychotherapy I find this book by Brian Weiss provides a step forward in the search for new tools to bring health to body, mind and spirit. The concept of a learning journey as the measure for the development of the life of the soul versus the concept of a timeline limited to the duration of a given body, adds a different and rather powerful perspective of what life is all about. This kind of perspective -spirituality I shall say- incorporates a different dimension into anybody's life, regardless of religious beliefs.

This was a very easy read and I enjoyed it very much. It is an unbelievable true story. Now there may have been some funny things going on with the books relating to the facts. I didn't really pay all that attention to what Catherine was saying about her past lives. It was interesting at first but what really floored me was when the masters spoke. The wisdom that came from them was a beautiful thing. That is what really won me over with this book was the wisdom that was in it. I don't know about all the historical facts that may be wrong about what she had said but when she spoke of wisdom it made a lot of sense. Even if she is the greatest actress and lier alive she still has some damn good thoughts about life. I don't believe in this book blindly and fully but I do enjoy the wisdom within it.

Brian Weiss guides the listener through a fascinating documentary of a woman's courageous journey to unlock the demons that hold her back from joy, peace and harmony. Some may question the validity, but stay open to the possibility that we are numbed out from our own potentiality. Imagine a life without fear, anxiety and depression! Very insightful and inspiring to listen in on this revealing example of his work.

In my life, there have been times wherein I felt I have been through a situation before. There have been times when I see a complete stranger and know I've seen the person before - where I don't know. And being a Hindu, I do believe in the concept of reincarnation to an extent.

Dr. Brian L. Weiss is Chairman Emeritus of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami. In Many Lives Many Masters, Dr. Weiss describes the insights of a young patient, Catherine, who came to him at the age of 27 to solve the mystery to her anxities, depression, and fears.

During these sessions with Catherine, Dr. Weiss came face-to-face with the concepts of reincarnation, which in some way falsified his traditional scientific traditional method. After using the traditional methouds for many months to help Catherine, Dr. Weiss tried hypnosis, which is a state wherein a person can have a focused concentration.

It was during these sessions of hypnosis that Catherine could recollect many incidents of her childhood that accounted for her phobias. For example, when she swallowed water and felt gagged when pushed from a diving board into a pool led to her phobia of choking. However moving forward, there a series of incidents wherein Catherine can recollect her past life events that proved to be the factors of her anxiety attacks. It is during this hypnoic state that she remembers living 86 times in physical state - in different places on this earth - either as male or female - during different time frames.

Catherine revealed much much more. She hears voices from the Masters around her and learns great wisdom from them. Dr. Weiss's life also changes with these amazing and wise revelations.

This book reveals a lot of wisdom. In addition to this, this book is nicely written with easy to understand language. After I started reading this book, I could not keep it down before finish reading it. Go ahead, grab your copy.

I really enjoyed reading this book, I read it within 3 days. That is fast for me because I don't have a lot of time to read, but I found every minute I could to read it. It is very explanitory to things that happen, I find myself with questions, and as I keep ready I end up with the answers, like: If spirits are reincarnated then how are spirits able to visit? Not all spirits are reincarnated, some are able to stay in spirit life and visit those they are close to. I really got a lot of my questions answered with this book. It is worth the read.

I've read several books on reincarnation. Each have different stories and beliefs. At first, I believed this book 100%. Dr. Weiss wrote the book very well. I, personally, believe in life after death and reincarnation. However, Dr. Weiss seems a bit gullible. The more that I think about it, the more unrealistic it seems. This has been brought up a lot in reviews. But in Chapter 3, Catherine states that the year is "1863 B.C". There is no way that she could have known that it was before Christ, even if her present mind put that in, she was still expieriencing a past life. In chapter 9, she described the planes she was flying "Some type of chopper plane. It has four propellers. It's a fixed wing." If she was really "Eric" at the time, then she would have known the EXACT model of the plain, in order to pilot it. Dr. Weiss said he was amused at her knowledge, saying she didn't know about it in her present lifetime, but he doesn't know Catherine out of the office, does he? He only meets her in the office, he would have no way of knowing if she knew this or not. Also, the "Masters" seem a bit phony to me. They wouldn't just speak specifically to Weiss if they were these great spiritual beings. There are also no other accounts of these "Masters". And I don't believe she would be able to recall this state at all. In my opinion, I believe that Catherine has Multiple Personality Disorder. He didn't research what Catherine said at all, that would have helped a lot in the book.
As for the study of reincarnation, I believe it. But Catherine, I do not. I also believe that past life regression can be used as a tool to help get rid of anxieties and fears. But I think that Dr. Weiss is too open-minded and I think he just wants to be named as someone to make an important discovery. He should have researched his facts more in order to make this book plausible.

The most surprising thing to me about anything Spiritual, is how long it takes the scientific communities to "get it". Edgar Cayce wrote several books about this at least 20 years earlier. But for some idiotic reason, this news always seems to have more credibility coming from PhDs.

Reading about how occurrences in people's past lives carry forward and have implications in their current lives is fascinating. When it happens to non-believers, including the MD, it's even better.

If you wear your paradigm like a tight pair of underwear, this book will be too incredulous for you. If your mind is open, this is one you cannot miss reading.

After hearing about this book on Oprah,I decided to buy it. I read it very quickly because it was difficult to put down. There were times when I felt that the whole thing could've been a hoax but other times when I opened my mind to the possibility that it could be true. The fact that the author was willing to risk his reputaton as a well respected member of the medical community to write the book, lends a certain credibility to it. At the very least this was a thought provoking book whether or not the reader choses to believe in reincarnation or not and one that I would recommend to anyone interested in exploring life after death concepts.

I became bored after reading midway through the book. A question arised as to the validity of some of the statements of one of the patients. Such as "winning all the races in one day." Any proof here? Also, most of the regressed patients could have saved in their minds material usurped from television and other readings. I recognized many of the prior regressed years, clothing, community, area of the country, and geographies just from what I already know. Nothing new here. I found the material boring. Nothing really special in any of their regressions.

Also, I paid for a new book and received a damaged front cover.

The awakening of his own belief system was instrumental in his bringing this information to us in book form. It's weird that when I first opened the package, I was ready to send this book back unread. But soon after I started reading it, I was hooked.

Many Lives, Many Masters puts a spin on private thoughts, deja vu, anxieties, feelings or sensations that seem unexplained. We've all had them, but kind of brush them off as insignificant.
This book gives credence to the naysayers who deny that this dimension of the human element exists. I have passed this book to a neighbor who called me and said he has bought books for his family.
There is no denial that we need to keep an open mind as we explore this dimension in life, although seemingly intangible, that it may connect us to previous lives and experiences.

This book was written back in 1988 but recently appeared on an Oprah TV episode (2008). For those interested in the afterlife reincarnation and other realms of reality this book validates past and after life assumptions via Dr. Weiss's professional credentials. The subject in this book lived 86 past lives but only a few are recalled. In addition, other beings speak through the subject to teach us some of the reasons why we exist. Of course many questions arise but few if any will be answered here. Now, as a reader of the "Seth Material" and "Seth Speaks" I was pleased to find commonalities between both books. If you are familiar with Seth you know that he was an entity that spoke through Jane Roberts which was recorded in hundreds of "Sessions". During these sessions Seth taught about the many aspects and dimensions of life. The Seth books are far more informative than Many Lives, Many Masters. Some of the common concepts discussed are:
1. Whether we believe in reincarnation or not we live many lives.
2. We are here to learn.
3. We are here to settle debts owed to people from past events.
4. We are not allowed to kill people at all for any reason. Only God can take a life.
5. Masters are spiritual beings from another plane of reality who come to us to teach.
Many Lives... is a good feeling book but to really get into it please read Seth Speaks. It is far more informative and mind blowing. For instance, we can not only change the future by present action but change the past too. We can create multiple personalities. There are an infinite number of dimensions. If you have doubts about these concepts please be informed that quantum physicists have theorized about numerous if not infinite universes. Another concept Seth declares is that "mind creates reality, not the other way around". Quantum physicists have speculated that conclusion during lab experiments. Basically, we are the masters of our existence and we exist many times over. We never die. We are as dead now as we will ever be. We should not fear death. We must have faith. We choose the time and place of our birth and the time of death. Periods between lives are to refelct upon our past life lessons and to rest and plan our next existence. So many more concepts are discussed. Buy Many Lives and read it then buy Seth Speaks.

I found this book to be very interesting and informative, but I suppose that depends on if you believe the premise of having many lives. Well-written, a page turner.

I will say, however, that compared to the Life Between Lives series, this book fell far short. I still gave this book 5 stars because it is very worthwhile, but look up Dr. Michael Newton's Life Between Lives series for stunning, vast, massive amounts of material gleaned from hundreds of people, as opposed to this book which essentially only derives its conclusions from one patient.

Still worththile though.

I have long believed in the possibility of reincarnation and the spiritual realm. It started with the book "Z" by Vasilisk Vassilicos, on to books by Lobsang Rampa and almost naturally, Dr Raymond Moody with his groundbreaking "Life after Life". This last one lent some credibility as it was based on interviews with actual people that had undergone through Near Death Experiences (NDE).

I had heard about this book, "Many Lives, Many Masters" from others, and when I saw it referred to in another book, this one written by a reknown Rabbi, I decided to buy it.

The book has no "Hocus Pocus" element to it. Dr Brian Weiss explains what happened between him and his client in simple and real terms. The sessions are condensed into the pertinent facts and these are delivered dispassionately. On a subject so easily dramatised and exaggerated the author keeps both feet on the ground and tells it as it was, pure and simple.

It is this straightforward way of telling it that captured my credibility. I am certain Dr Weiss could have flooded the book with psyco-speak and medical terminologies. Instead, he writes for the ordinary reader that approaches the subject with trepidation. The report is delivered in a balanced and yet exciting way. The book is not only hugely readable, it is also persuasively credible in its simple retelling of facts.

I strongly urge readers interested in the subject of reincarnation to read it and read it twice! It opens a new world of possibilities and is a landmark book on the subject.

Brian Weiss was a well-established psychiatrist in Miami who began to use hypnosis and unexpectedly encountered past-life material and non-physical guidance while working with a patient. He courageously began to explore this further and decided to publish this book, knowing it would upset the medical and religious establishments. This is an authentic story. Past-life memories are a real phenomenon (sometimes specific verifiable details come through that only have parapsychological explanations). I've come to practice regression therapy myself as a therapist in Miami and met Brian Weiss a couple times at his talks. His books are well-written, engaging accounts of what he and his patients learn about life and our spiritual purpose, as the wisdom and memories of the soul are accessed under hypnosis. This first book by Weiss shares the story of how he was drawn into this field, and lacks some of the spiritual depth and understanding of later books. It's a nice beginning for anyone who wishes to explore how we can benefit from working with our soul's memories and wisdom to heal ourselves.

When I first read this book as a teenager, many of the illusions that I had about life and death at the time were shattered. The implications made in this book clashed violently with what I had been taught in my Christian elementary school and Catholic junior high but still inspired me to further explore the concept of reincarnation for myself. It was Many Lives, Many Masters that first challenged me to question all of my pre-conceived notions and arrive at my own conclusions. Now as an adult, I recently re-read the book and can still appreciate its indisputable power to stir the quiet mind.

Author and prominent psychiatrist, Dr. Weiss, takes his readers on a journey that begins with his own skepticism and gradually progresses into a new, more enlightened perspective. The book centers on Dr. Weiss' accidental but rather startling discovery that, Catherine; one of the patients he was conducting hypnotherapy on was recalling traumas that occurred not only in this life but in several past lives as well. Many Lives, Many Masters chronicles many of Dr. Weiss' sessions with Catherine and describes how these regressions permanently altered both of their lives.

Though I have no evidence that these accounts are any more or less real than those tales presented in the Bible or other texts of a spiritual nature, I certainly found the book to be an easy, intriguing and enjoyable read. However, as with all concepts that challenge traditional beliefs, I highly recommend that readers keep an open mind so that this book's true value can be fully appreciated.

I've always been interested in past life regression and the possibility of karma, etc. This is why I picked up Weiss' book. I found it fascinating reading, the possibilities open to each of us to heal our hurts, if we are open to healing, whether you believe in past lives or not.

I read this at the suggestion of a friend who had good intentions. But, beware. This is a carefully disguised attempt at spreading Mormon ideology. While other medical professionals have their reasons for discounting, I would ask that you do the research. . .you will find that it closely follows the teachings of the Book of Mormon. I almost got sucked into the good feelings that we all get "do-overs" in this lifetime. But, I know that is not the case. Christians, watch out for this book! It is dangerous!!!

I always have a hard time believing what I can't see for myself. I love this book for several reasons. First, I want very much to believe in reincarnation. Second, it's just a very good read. And third, I know Dr. Weiss. My father was a good friend of his in med school, and when I was little we'd sometimes stay with the Weisses when we visited Florida. And my dad wrote one of the blurbs on the back. It's always kind of neat to read this book and to see my dad's words on the back. Anyways, although I haven't seen Dr. Weiss since I was a child, I feel like it is easier to believe that these books are true because of that connection, even if it has been a while. And I want to believe in this. It's an amazing book, I just wish I could experience it firsthand.

Excellent capture of past life regressions by "scientist" with conclusions based on combination of personal observations and favorable results for the patient

I was given this book to read by a therapist a few years ago. She implied that it would really leave a lasting impression and be very helpful for my depression and anxiety. You know, it was readable and interesting I guess, but I don't recall any lessons learned or even what the book was about really. I do remember it wasn't particularly helpful or even believable. Give me a break! This book should not be in the self-help section, but the sci-fi section!

I love this book, Dr. Weiss has got some go, for those who question reincarnation. He talks about how he himself questioned it at first.

This book was very easy to read, it really got my attention, I couldn't put it down and finished reading it in 3 days!
Dr. Weiss is a psyquiatrist who decides to practice a regresion in a patient who wouldn't improve after a certaing period of time of conventional therapy and she couldn't take medications because part of her problem was that she couldn't swallow pills because she felt like choking. He intended to regress her patient through hypnosis, to her childhood or the time when the trauma happenned, but she ended up regressing to another lifetime, to his surprise!
This seemed to work, she started to show improvement, and they kept having this sessions, and this is what unfolds in this book, the information coming from this past lives and the time in between the lives, and the openmindedness from both of them to this experience, this has been of benefit to other patients, and it was meant to share with the world for the benefit of all of us.

Maybe for people who are very knowledgeable in reincarnation, a lot of information here is not going to be new, but still there is much to gain from this book, as some ideas/thoughts needs to be listened many times in different ways, until they really integrate in our life, as sometimes we can say we know things, but we are not really acting as if we know things. So there is the knowing of the information and then the aplying it in our lives!
