I held off buying this guide for quite some time because the reviews I read stated that the photographs it contained were in black and white instead of color, and not very good.
I finally caved in and purchased this guide only to find that the black and white photographs were bright, clear and sharp (not "grainy" as I had pictured them) and - most importantly - extremely informative. The guide is an almost necessary addition to the manual that comes with the camera. The manual is steeped in detail and feels, sometimes, like a hindrance when you simply want to get on with it and take a few photographs. The Magic Lantern Guide, on the other hand, cuts to the chase and even adds a few detours that the manual does not go into. All in all, the guide has turned out to be a wise investment, allowing me to get the most - and the best - out of my great camera. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-08-19 03:21:16 EST)

This book does a much better job of explaining the features and power of the K10d camera. I would highly recommend it to anyone that owns this camera!

this manual is pretty much an expanded version of the original manual. To me, this book is just paraphrasing what the oe manual says. It hardly teaches you ways to take better photos or settings with this camera.
Also there are no color photos which to me wouldve been very important. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-06-01 02:43:38 EST)

If you've lost your manual to the camera, this is a good guide. I ordered this and Scott Kelby's Digital Photography books and ended up returning this guide. I know this guide is rated highly but Kelby went into better detail for the beginner. Combine Kelby's book with the factory manual and you've got a much better combination.

Recently purchased a Pentax K10D and the manual is vague on certain things. This book clears up some of the confusion and makes everything much clearer to understand. Loads of info, so it will take time, as it is a complex camera as well.

Great expansion to the manual. I found the book to be an added resource to explaining the many features the K10D has to offer.

The manual that come with the camera is, well, a detailed manual... It is helpful in clarifying what each and every button or option does, but doesn't help you make choices on what mode or option to use in various lighting conditions, etc. The Magic Lantern book does give you advice on how to use the various features, and what are reasonable choices given the type of shot, available light, is subject in motion, etc. It also gives an updated view of the camera, covering recent firmware upgrades (most notably v1.10), the manual doesn't even mention new features available. I'm a DSLR newbie, so this book continues to be a useful reference. As you use your camera, you'll run into situations like low light or flash photography where the book won't have all the answers, but that's understandable. At that point you're on your way to exploring photography with the K10D, a great tool, so the book achieved it's purpose!

This is an exellent book to have when you buy your new camera. It provides a little more depth than the camera guide that comes with your camera purchase. I would highly recommend any of the Majic Lantern Guides when trying to familiarize yourself with a new camera.

This camera is designed for photographers with a working knowledge of "film cameras" and manual exposure experience. If you don't understand how cameras work without the "auto" mode, this book explains everything you need to know about this Pentax model. This book also explains all the custom settings and camera functions in better detail better than the Pentax manual.

This book is an excelent addition to the camera. It gives you enough infomation to know what those settings are and what they do. The user manual that comes with the camera is not very useful because it doesn't give even a short explanation of what the settings mean.

Great information. Fills in the blank on stuff not found in the instruction manual. For example, you won't find information in the Pentax K10d manual on how to use the Pentax 360 or 540 flashes in wireless mode. This book does. Want to know which depth of field preview works best? It's in the book.
I could go on with essential information left out of the camera manual but you will have your own questions the more you use your camera. By the way don't throw away the camera instructions. It's a good starting point. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-31 02:32:54 EST)

I purchased a Pentax K10D in August of 2007 and recently purchased Magic Lantern Guides K10D manual and have found it to be extremely helpful in explaining the many options one has available with the K10D. I would reccomend this book to anyone.

I can hardly believe how great this book is. I'm used to so many product guides that are disappointing and little more than recapitulations of the manual plus pictures of available accessories.
THIS guide is absolutely outstanding. The guide has taught me a lot that I didn't know I was unaware of about digital photography, and it gives real advice on which features to use, when to use them and how to use them. The camera itself has a huge range of features. Without this guide, I'd be confused about many of them and using far fewer than I am today. I do need to keep reading the guide because I'm old and forgetful, but the organization is excellent, so I never have trouble finding what I need. Even if you know digital photography like a pro, I can't imagine how this guide for the K10 wouldn't help you. If you are making a switch from a simpler camera, or have a background in film-based photography, this guide will explain where film and CCD diverge, especially with regard to linearity of response to light at different wavelengths (or nonlinearity, in the case of film). If this seems too esoteric to be of interest, trust me, it isn't: you don't have to understand the details, but you do want to know how to get the correct white balance under different shooting conditions. The Pentax K10D guide by Magic Lantern explains, in very practical terms, how to use the features of the camera to adjust white balance, and even fine tune it. Also made clear are the slow and fast flash synch options, including setting the flash to fire at the end of the exposure rather than the beginning. Example pictures are given to explain why and when to use these modes. This book is worth its weight in gold (maybe more!). (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-12-14 04:17:54 EST)

Great Book!!! Lots of tips/suggestions on better use of the camera's functions. (ie. recommends turning on CCD cleaning function (with steps!)during first use so that CCD cleans each time camera is turned on!) Many of the items within the instruction manual included with the camera are fully explained in THIS book! (You almost have to read this one to understand the IM!!!) Only complaint is that the example photos in the book should have been published in COLOR--note to Magic Latern!! Otherwise if you have the K10-D you MUST buy this book!!

I have had my K10D camera for a few months and I had been frustrated not knowing how to use certain features. Abreviations and features that the camera manuals are very sketchy on are made very clear by this book. The author goes so far as to make recommended settings for the camera to help optimize your photographs. It was fantastic to have this book specifically tailored to the K10D features. I kept my camera at hand as I read the book so I could try out the various settings as I read the book.

Pentax puts together a very detailed manual, at least in what functions do and where to find them. For more practical application tips you need to look else where and this book will give you a boat load of them. I'm very much a newbie to DSLR photography (used various point-and-shoots for the last 15 years) and this book has been a excellent crash course. The writing is clear and very approachable. This book will not replace the Pentax manual, but it can show you how to use your K10D more effectively.

Intersting description and recommendations on user settings.
However, features of the 1.10 firmware update like ISO control on dials are not mentioned. Use of K lenses through green button is also not clear. Use of off-camera flash can be more detailed. Needs a updated version which includes SDM lenses and 1.30 firmware. (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-11-05 23:26:56 EST)

This is an excellant guide for either an owner or prospective owner of the PENTAX K10D dslr camera. It goes into detail about each feature of the camera, and doesn`t hesitate to make his approval or disapproxal of a feature. Anyone that owns a PENTAX K10D should have this book as a reference guide--This is a MUST.--BILL RHYNE

This compact and comprehensive guide is great to keep in your camera-bag. It covers everything that the manual does but in greater detail and with examples of photographs taken using the techniques described. If you are a new K10D user, whether you are experienced with SLRs or have only ever used P&S before, you will find it invaluable - flip through a few pages whenever you have a spare moment and you will discover some new possibility on the feature-rich K10D.

Burian, does a great job of taking the mystery out of adjustible, digital slr cameras. A logical, progressive, step-by-step approach, leading to a non-intimidating familiarity, with a highly sophisticated device. This is surely the best manual-assist books I have ever read in my 37 year passion with photography. Well done! I wish you would write one about the operating manual for the software as well.

Mr Burian - who also wrote the Sony Alpha manual in this series - truly is a hands-on professional who obviously has used the camera extensively. He shares his knowledge and experience in crisp clear language and doesn't hesitate to offer advice on important settings. Properly, he devotes more than adequate time to RAW (digital negative) photography. After more than half a year of camera ownership, I still learned a great deal - some of it quite revealing.
To keep costs down, illustrations are black & white; some quite stunning and nearly everyone making a photographic point. Some line art would have been helpful - the photo of the 4-way navigation control (p. 40) barely reveals the all-important directional arrows, and stating that 'the menu has four tabs' hardly takes the place of a line drawing as shown in the Operating Manual. Not to worry though, as the balance of the figures is sharp, detailed and very much to the point. Complete newcomers may wish to pick up the point-and-shoot basics from the unusually well-done Pentax K10D User Manual before moving up to this book. Moreover, the author assumes you have the latest automatic lenses - ignoring the fact that many users retain Pentax loyalty because of consistent backward lens compatibility. My old manual f4 80-200mm zoom is sharp as a tack, but learning how to properly meter exposure using the manual aperture ring would be appreciated by many readers (hint: use the 'green button'). These minor detractions aside, the sections on exposure adjustment and flash photography alone are worth the very modest price. Well Done! (Review Data Last Updated: 2007-10-14 08:11:31 EST)

This book is pretty good.. I just find it ironic that a book about digital photography even while discussing topics related to color such as white balance etc, the book offers no color photos to emphasize its points, all the photos are B&W. Seems like an odd choice by the publisher given the current technology for color printing of books...

Peter K. Burian has used the K10D and it shows. Unlike the manual, which shows you the options available on the K10D, this guide makes recommendations and gives reasoned, logical substantiation for the choices. He's changed how I use the DSLR for the better. That's the highest praise I can give.
