| Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10 | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
Four US Navy SEALS departed one clear night in early July, 2005 for the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border for a reconnaissance mission. Their task was to document the activity of an al Qaeda leader rumored to have a small army in a Taliban stronghold. Five days later, only one of those Navy SEALS made it out alive. This is the story of the only survivor of Operation Redwing, SEAL team leader Marcus Luttrell, and the extraordinary firefight that led to the largest loss of life in American Navy SEAL history. His squadmates fought valiantly beside him until he was the only one left alive, blasted by an RPG into a place where his pursuers could not find him. Over the next four days, terribly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell crawled for miles through the mountains and was taken in by sympathetic villagers who risked their lives to keep him safe from surrounding Taliban warriors. Born and raised Texan, Marcus Luttrell takes us from the rigors of SEAL training, where he and his fellow SEALs discovered what it took to join the most elite of the American special forces, to a fight in the desolate hills of Afghanistan, for which they never could have been prepared. His account of his squadmates' heroism and mutual support renders an experience for which two of his squadmates were posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for combat heroism that is both heartrending and life-affirming. In this rich chronicle of courage and sacrifice, honor and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers a powerful narrative of modern war.

An amazing book about a true American hero. If this was a fiction novel, you'd be marveling at how impossible it would be to do and accomplish the things that author Marcus Luttrell does. It moved me to tears, had me waking up my husband to read parts of it to him, got me so angry, and then had me in tears again. Even my husband, who hates reading, read this book and has passed it on many times over. Absolutely amazing, highly recommended!

This book was a great read for anyone who loves this country- yes, Marcus has his opinions about the "liberal media" and liberal politicians, but read the book and you'll see why he feels this way. You don't have to love George W. Bush to love this story. A tragic story of survival after a mission goes all wrong, the book is an inspiration and moves even the toughest to tears in a feel good way. Faith is tested and confirmed. Makes me continue to marvel at our young men and women who serve- especially in our special forces. I'm always interested in books about the storied SEALs and their training, and Marcus lays it all out. Awesome read!

Lone Survivor is not the best book I've read on modern warfare, especially in regards to the concepts of limited war or even specialized war. In these two categories, I consider the best books to be: (1) Blackhawk Down, a great study in the complexities associated with limited war; and (2) Bravo Two Zero, a gripping retelling of a SAS mission gone wrong.
Nevertheless, Lone Survivor is still illuminating for two reasons. First, the book makes plain what great Americans we have placed in harm's way. The camaraderie of the teams, their commitment to America, and their sheer toughness should give anyone pause when considering who our heroes should be. Second, the book provides an intimate account of the difficult landscape we've been traversing in Afghanistan. The Taliban are battle tested, relentless, and very close with the local tribesmen. In a country without modern roads, communications, or even an established government, such close alliances are difficult to disrupt. Lone Survivor, though, shows that such disruption is possible. As our efforts to win the hearts and minds of the Afghanis progress, Lone Survivor suggests why our strategy may be promising, puts us next to the heroes putting it into action, and foreshadows the potential perils ahead. Though not the best, it puts our current dilemma into context, which makes Lone Survivor worthwhile for many reasons. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-14 16:17:08 EST)

Nothing I can say will give this book, the author and/or his team justice. The story of Marcus Luttrell and SEAL Team 10 is one that cannot be explained by anyone other than the individual who was there and by the grace of God lived through the experience. The heroism, bravery, and patriotism of the SEALs are unparalleled anywhere in the World. I am so proud to call the United States of American my home and be even remotely connected to these wonderful soldiers. This book should be required reading for every American age seventeen and above.

This book picked me up carried me through a journey of a US Navy SEAL. The Lone Survivor is a truly outstanding representation of what a person as brave and heroic as the Lone Survivor. It threw you into his background, his BUD/S Indoc, BUD/S Training, Hell Week, and then off on a C-130 into the Afghani Mountains. The SEALS were left for dead, but Lutrell hung in there. Through things I could never have thought of doing, he hung in there. What a brave person. This book is written in a very fast paced manner. I read it in 3 days, although admittedly I read it more than normal. You won't, or shouldn't be disappointed with this book purchase!

Lone Survivor is a real piece of history. It showed an event through the eyes of a true American hero. I noticed a lot of negative reviews. Some explaining how its ridiculous that Mr. Luttrell believed that liberal Americans played a part in the death of his three friends. I would like to explain that this was a book based on the feelings of the author and in no way they should play a part in decided if this is a good story. This is the feelings of the story teller and doesn't change the fact that it is amazing story about an American hero.

This book grabbed my attention from the very first chapter and I could not put it down. My heart goes out to Marcus and the families of those lost in Operation Redwing. This book is a must read for anyone who loves the USA. I have never had a book affect me the way this one has. I have always been proud to be an American but now I am even more proud of my country and what the brave men and women of the military do for us everyday. I cried while reading this book and many tears afterwards. Many of my personal feelings are because I am so disappointed and disgusted in our current administration (2008 - 2012) and the lack of patriotism I see coming from the news media and the Whitehouse.

If you want to read the most action packed real life military action book you can imagine buy this today. Another reviewer said it best, the first 40 pages or so seem very matter of fact about Seal training. Marcus seems over the top patriotic but determined to be a Seal. I thought that was going to be the focus of the book with a battle thown in.
Then hold on man, after I read the rest of the book I am over the top patriotic and think the Navy Seals are everything good I ever heard about them. This is the story that really tells it like it is. When I was a kid I used to get adventure military paperbacks. The soldiers fired maching guns from the hip, got blown up and kept fighting, then fought off hoardes of enemy in impossible odds. This true story has all that and a wonderful spirituality and patriotism that is pure and heroic. This will be a military classic in years to come. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-13 17:18:58 EST)

Read this- not Horse Soldiers. It's very exciting and informative at the same time. We all need to know what these heroes go through just to become a seal. You will be proud of this generation of Americans.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is well-written, informative, and full of detail. In a time in which the word hero has lost much of its meaning, this book is sure to restore the true image of real American heros. America owes the heros of SEAL Team 10 their respect, admiration and gratitude.

This is a short review. As said in other reviews, this book takes you through the back story of Marcus Luttrell, through Indoc and BUD's, through his engagements and ultimately his ordeal of Op RedWing.
This is the most humbling book I have ever read. I highly recommend for a incredible insight into the mind of one of America's best. Semper Fi. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-13 17:18:59 EST)

This book was recommended to me by an employee at a bookstore and they read me perfectly. This book is one of those few that you read in a very short period of time, and then recommend to all of your friends. I usually don't read books twice, but this one I will read multiple times.

I loved this book! It not only recuonts in great detail the ordeal of four Navy SEALS fighting for their lives in the mountains of Afghanistan, but dives deeper into the emotional trauma and everlasting affects of this ordeal for not only the sole survivor, but also the families and friends.

Thanks for sharing this story with us! Whatever you think about the politics of this story shouldn't matter. Luttrell tells it like it is and how it happened. Real life and death considerations and the possible consequences. I enjoyed this book and never had known about the help Lutrell received from the Afghans which is the best part of the story. Thanks for sharing this with us Marcus!!

Great story of a true American warrior. Being an identical twin, I can attest to the connection Marcus describes with Morgan. Lone Survivor really helps anyone understand what it means to be a US Navy Seal.

I too, found this book to be a rather disgusting attempt to political soap box. Don't get me wrong, I am a USMC vet myself, and I really wanted to read about SEAL Team 10 and the incidents in Afghanistan. What I didn't expect was Mr. Hollywood Luttrell's political ravings. First there is the usual liberal bashing, then the political justifications, and, of course, all the desultory details about how big and tough SEAL's are. Yeah, yeah, yeah...ad nauseam. Then he takes the predictable and tiresome swipes at the press and anyone else who objected to some of the misinformation, falsifications, assumptions and exaggerations that has plagued current US military involvement in both Afghanistan and Iraq. It is one thing to blow your own horn and go about the blowhard bragging that Hollywood Luttrell undertakes, but it's a shameful affair when you use the deaths of American military personnel as a marketing tool to advance your own political agenda. I could not finish this book---where is honest reporting and legitimate history? This is money wasted and a huge disappointment.

Not being entirely familiar with the Navy SEAL's, this book was a true eye-opener and a moving tribute to Marcus's colleagues and buddies, some of whom do not make it home. Yes, there's political undertones...that's America! Get past that part and, it doesn't matter where you stand politically, you will be screaming "USA! USA!", by the time you finish the book!!
Well done, Marcus - it was an honor to read your story. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-02 10:09:57 EST)

This is truly an amazing story. Forget the criticisms of the rah, rah Bush...just read the story and you will find yourself re-living through Marcus's eyes a harrowing tale of heroism, honor, duty, and brotherly love. From the SEAL training to operation Redwing to the compassionate treatment and protection from the Afghan community to final rescue and return home... I found myself not always agreeing with Marcus's perspective, but understanding why he feels so strongly, as he recounts what he went through to become a SEAL. And, what he and his buddies did for each other and for country. Wow, what a story - all Americans, especially Texans, really should read this account. Thanks, Marcus, for sharing with us all.

A very well written account of the courage, determination and love of country this young man posesses. To be a SEAL in the US Navy is to be the best of the best and Marcus Luttrell certainly exemplifies that.

This story is powerful and riveting. I have to say this book impacted me more powerfully than any I have read in a while. The story is authentic and inspiring. The author goes to great lengths to explain his dream of being a Navy SEAL, the lengths he went through to achieve it, and the intense struggle he went through in the mountains of Hindu Kush. He does it all giving credit to the heroism of his team, the prayers of his family, and the surprising help he received in the Taliban country from the Pashtun people. I did not want to put it down...and now that I've finished it, I can't stop thinking of this incredible story. I am a military brat, a military wife, and an avid reader. This story reminds me of the values our armed forces embrace and the obstacles within our own country that keep them from succeeding.

As the title suggests, Luttrell was the lone survivor of a four-man SEAL team that was on a mission in Afghanistan. When the team radioed for help, 16 more SEALs and special forces soldiers responded and were killed when their helicopter was shot down with an RPG. That is neither the start nor the end of Luttrell's story.
Luttrell begins his book by providing some of his background and then a description of his SEAL training. These are important as an aid in understanding just how someone could survive what he did, both physically and mentally. He then describes the mission of his team, their fateful decision, and their heroism as they fought for their lives. Luttrell, severely wounded but not quite defenseless, then places his life in the hands of Afghan herders who defy the Taliban and rescue him. This is an unbelievable tale of dedication, heroism, humility, and faith. Some reviewers don't like the fact that Luttrell makes some comments about "liberal media." Fine, but there is no denying that concerns about how the liberal media would react play an important role in the story. For good or bad, this shows that our military personnel are not unaffected by how they are portrayed in the media here at home. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-02 10:09:57 EST)

This is an outstanding book about a courageous group of individuals that every American citizen should take time to recognize and appreciate their sacrifices. Unfortunately, our nation only tends to remember the brave folks defending our country once they have given the ultimate sacrifice. Hopefully after reading this book folks will start to open their eyes & hearts to start realizing how much each & every member of the US Military sacrifices on a daily basis. The story is outstanding and at times may be hard to believe for folks that did not spend time in the military. The book is excellently written and at times the reader will find themselves wanting to run out and enlist. At the end of the book, you will truly appreciate all that our US Military does for us on a daily basis and how unfortunate it is that the liberal media reports on only the negatives of what our military must endure. This book will bring a tear to your eye, and love to your heart for our Serviceman & women!! It makes me appreciate the 11 years I spent in the US Army & US Navy (VF-211, USS Nimitz 88-92). I will forever respect, love & honor what the individuals in this book / mission did. But more importantly, what every service member does on a daily basis. If you appreciate your freedom, thank a veteran!!! You will after reading this book!!God bless the USA, and each member of our military on active duty and keep them for harms way!!
PS - Read on Kindle 2, and they did leave out some of the photos that are in hard copy, which I wish they had included (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-02 10:09:58 EST)

If you really aren't into the "War is Great" mentality, this book is a total waste of money. Everyone is a TERRORIST - all the Iraqis are TERRORISTS, it's ok to blow people away because that is what SEALs do. I had thought I was buying a really interesting in-depth special story. I bought propaganda for the Bush torture regime. If I could take the book back and get a refund, I would. I made it about 100 pages and tossed it into the trash.
This is the first negative review I have ever written. If you really aren't into the killing is fun and we made it legal type of thought process, don't waste your money. It's a tribute to Bush and pure propaganda. A total waste of time, money and words. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-02 10:09:58 EST)

As an author myself I always look for the professionalism in a book written by the person that experienced the book's content, and this book is as well written as anythig that Vince Flynn or Robert Ludlum has written...BUT...this story is all true. Every American should read this and then take a hard look at every man or woman wearing the uniform of an American Soldier, and they will probably see that person in a new light. We are one of only a few countries that are truly free, and it's that way because of men like Marcus Luttrell.

I gave this audio book to my husband and he really enjoyed not only the true story but the company he had while driving coast to coast in Florida. He says he wants to get more books this way
The story was told really well and although it seems to be a masculine type of book, he was sure women would like it also. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-02 10:09:58 EST)

Well, what can I say........ I've read many SEAL novels, The NON-fictional ones only, no DISrepect to R. Marcinko, mind you. Loved his "Rouge Warrior" auto bio, and his 2nd "RED CELL" book. But in the end I'm only intrested in REAL SpecOps novels.
This Book has instantly made my SEAL collection as the lastest, greatest. I'm currently reading it over just in case a few things, got past me I didn't catch on the 1st time I read it. Anybody like SpecOps books, especially SEALs will not be disappointed with this. I know, I [...] KNOW HOLLYWOOD IS ALREADY PREPARING THE SCRIPT, CASTING AND SCREEN WRITING OF THIS BOOK. And Like always They gonna F it up too. Unless "Ridley Scott" or Steven Spielsburg does it. (Review Data Last Updated: 2009-08-02 10:09:58 EST)

This book was amazing. It kept me on edge and was well written and authentic. I have to admit-the first part, the training for the Seals was interesting but nowhere as compelling as the excursion into the Taliban war zone, after the initial Seal training. I understand more about the military than I ever thought I would know or even want to. This book is like an action movie in print! Bravo Marcus, so happy you were able to bring these memories and experiences home to us Americans that you have protected!! Happy Fourth of July, I am sure this is one of the most special days in your life!

The fact that this quite awful book was "co"written by a British hack (a rather odd choice for an American soldier) already explains a lot. There is a time honored tradition in British special forces memoirs to simply make stuff up, usually more violence, to make the story sexier. The most famous example, of course,is "Bravo Two Zero", which according to currently available information never had any enemy contact at all, but whose exploits in several contradictory books and a movie morphed into an epic running battle resulting in hundreds of dead Iraqis. I suspect the same happened here. There is no question in my mind that some heroic things happened on that mission; I don't think they would give the medal of honor to someone who didn't deserve it. Unfortunately, Luttrell is the "lone survivor", and his account, or rather his ghost writer's rendering of it, has way too many holes in it to be believable. This isn't how it happened; this is what the ghost writer thinks the American audience wants to read, complete with silly political rantings the kind of which I have never read in a military memoir before. From a marketing point of view, judging by the vast majority of reviews posted here, they hit it right on the head. But they've done a disservice to the special forces community and to those readers who want serious military history, not artificial patriotism a la FOX news.

This book was extremely well written. Luttrell did an amazing job at describing the environment and the people involved in the "story." It is a gut-wrenching and pivoting tale of the forging of one Patriot into a SEAL, and an account of the many professional Operators whom lost their lives that one fateful day defending this nation. If you are into war, history, strategy, and combat-related readings, I highly recommend Lone Survivor. It should be standard reading for all public and private educational institutions since it presents a modern first-hand perspective on war and the respect that our Armed Forces have earned and deserve.
Luttrell does not interrupt the rhythm with in-depth details ad nauseam ala Tom Clancy, but he does provide enough information so that the reader isn't completely lost. For example, he describes how he added 3 extra magazines to his standard loadout, his Oakley Assault Boots, the Mk 12 Mod 0 rifle with PEQ-4 and sound suppressor, and the position of the Taliban as his team is regrouping down the mountainside. A Clancy novel would have filled no less than 5 chapters detailing the luster of the moly-dry film coating on the Mk 12 receivers, the durometer of the Oakley Assault boot soles, etc... Above all, I would like to thank every past and present member of the US Armed Forces for their service. I hope other readers carry this sentiment because our Servicemen and Servicewomen would certainly benefit from our continued support! (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-29 21:14:03 EST)

Other than the thrilling tale that Luttrell provides us in this book, I'm amazed by the philosophical insight this guy provides throughout. He provides us with throughout this book. Throughout this book, the Navy Seal provides us with a history of the landscapes in his tale, a history of people such as the Pushtuns, and some other spot shots on the psychological makeup of those he encounters. My favorite example occurs after the Navy Seal has been given opiates for his pain in a Pushtun village. He states: "the drug is the one the Taliban and al Queda feed to suicide bombers before they obliterate themselves and everyone else within range." He then opines on the power of the drug stating: "There's nothing heroic about suicide bombers. They're mostly just dumb, brainwashed kids, stoned out of their minds." My astonishment is not meant to patronize, but I've read a lot of these military books, and I haven't run across many that are this insightful. Lone Survivor is also funny. I know, I know how is it possible that such a tale be funny? You have to read it. I could quote you the lines, but it would take about a paragraph to describe the context of the joke. Robinson and Luttrell managed to include humor in a manner that lightens the load of some of the incidents described in this book, and in doing so they have added importance to the situation by bringing you in all the more. That's craftsmanship. To those who might think the book supplies undue political overtones, I say that you can't bring your own political agenda to such a reading exercise. Luttrell brings his agenda to the book, and that is of an American who wants America to win wars. He cites examples of institutions that he thinks impede his progress throughout. He cites examples of how these institutions affect his thought processes and actions as a soldier. The book is told from his perspective. If you're going to bring too much of your own perspective to this account, you probably shouldn't purchase his book.

When I read Marcus Luttrel's story, I gained full appreciation for what our military accomplishes in countries like Afghanistan against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
This action packed story shows how a dedicated and courageous man can risk his life for his country and beliefs, but because he is moral, and worried about liberal Democratic political and legal action against him at home, he makes a decision to spare the life of two "civilians" who give up his position to the Taliban. That mistake and the Afghan civilians' betrayal brings the wrath of hell down upon him and his several Navy Seal teammates in combat in the form of over a hundred of the hateful enemey. A near miraculous battle ensues, the nature of which any war movie would be proud to include, and Marus narrowly escapes as the last Seal standing to tell this amazing tale of American heros. My heart goes out to Marcus, a true American hero, and I wish him the best of luck in all he will accomplish in the future. This book is fantastic. A story that goes through the training of becoming a Navy Seal to a battle vs. the Taliban in Afghanistan. I could hardly put it down. If they made this book into a movie it would be amazing.

A very engaging read from beginning to end. The author's often revealed negative judgment of the left distracted and disheartened me. Statements such as, "Sorry lefties. But like we say...in Texas, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do" only served to demonstrate further divisiveness in a culture unraveling because of these sentiments. Those who serve our nation should refrain from fueling partisan rhetoric--and I'm in the military.
Great story, however, and told in an easily read fashion. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-26 18:58:19 EST)

There's a part of me that's always been intrigued by the challenge of boot camp and, in the case of "Lone Survivor," training for special ops. I've never served in the military--although I would have no problem defending my country--but this book made me feel as though I had.
The story starts at the beginning of an ill-fated mission, then flashes back to Marcus Luttrell's childhood dream and subsequent training as a Navy SEAL. At first, I wanted to skip ahead to what happened high in the mountains of Afghanistan, to read of the firefight between four SEALs and the overwhelming throng of Taliban warriors. Instead, I found myself as engrossed in the training methods and endurance that these men went through just to have the opportunity to serve our country with their lives. There are parts that made me laugh, cringe, and gasp. Wisely, the coauthor stays hidden, allowing Luttrell's voice to speak on every page, giving us candid and believable insights into the processes and experiences behind every SEAL. But not every SEAL writes a book, and not many live through the hell that Luttrell went through for nearly a week, after the ambush and injuries he sustained--not to mention the loss of his very close comrades. The action scenes here are amazing, full of detail, emotion, and things that we rarely see portrayed accurately on film. Some of the details are those "stranger than fiction" type things that defy imagination. In the course of his survival, thanks to Pashtun tribesmen and his own endurance and ingenuity (as well as the godly intervention which Luttrell attests to), we come to appreciate and respect the heroes of combat even more than ever. Does Luttrell rant a bit about the liberal media? Yes. Does he vent about their early reports of his demise? Loudly. And rightly so. Does he cause us to question the mix of political agendas and idealism that sometimes stand in the way of those we expect to defend our freedom? You better believe it. Sure, we can point a finger at his personal griefs, but in fact its those very things that give credence to his questions. Not only is this a great book to read for anyone who enjoys stories of heroism and the military, it's a vital story to be mulled over by all who make decisions on the political end and all families who stand behind the men and women who put themselves in the line of fire for our safety. I couldn't put the book down. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-24 00:44:34 EST)

What an incredibly gripping and moving account of what the fighting men of our Western allies go through on a daily basis to ensure the West stays free. Thank god that there are fine young warriors out there who are prepared to sacrifice everything for our freedom. Some of the reviews I have read indicate that there are still doubters in our own society who believe that we can just sit on our backsides and those happy, peaceful people out there in the world will be nice to us....PLEASE! So what if the book is not a literary work of art. It shows the dedication , patriotism and sheer overwhelming loyalty and heroism of our fighting troops, without whom the West would very rapidly succumb to the onslaught of radical tyranny.

In reading this book I can't help but compare it to Andy McNab's Bravo Two Zero - it covers the same subject material involving a special forces patrol that gets compromised by goatherds and subsequently has to fight its way out of enemy territory. The story that McNab portrays contains both gritty realism and a fair degree of humanity that Marcus Luttrell handles much more unevenly. Either he's preaching straight from the Rush Limbaugh handbook against the "liberal media" or he's providing us with treacly description of his family's worry over his fate.
I really can't harp enough about the overtly political lens through which Luttrell portrays Afghanistan and the mysterious "liberals" who would have hung him for doing his God-given task of killing unarmed goatherders who happened to be in the wrong place. Frankly, it's tiresome compared to the description in Bravo Two Zero, where McNab and his squad simply set that moral issue aside in order to win the battle. Bottom line - Lone Survivor does justice to the heroes of Murphy's Ridge in the same way that a preacher or politician might - clearly delineating the goodness of the protagonists' allies and the evil of their enemies, instead of making us aware of the shades of gray and ironic coincidences of modern war. I couldn't put this book down. I read it in 2 days. Action packed, true story about a dangerous Navy Seal mission that went wrong in the high-mountains of Afghanistan near the Pak border. I glad that Marcus Latrell wrote this book, because the world needs to know the sacrifices and the hell our military goes through on behalf of our country and the free world. This is a great book and sure to be a classic.

As a US Marine on my way to Afghanistan, this book was tremendous. Not only could some of the things that Marcus experienced save my life one day, it also serves as inspiration to never give up. An all around great book.

I could go on about my relations to the United States Special Forces or my military experience or my families sacrifices during the current war but there's no point. It's the internet and anyone can say anything without having to prove their word, so I'll not bother.
What I don't understand is Mr. Luttrells' obvious need to prove something to the reader. He's a Navy SEAL, what else is there to prove? As a professional soldier Luttrell spends far too much time attempting to justify his nations policies and somehow prove that in performing his duties he and his team and his country are in the 'right'. As a sworn soldier of the United States his focus should have been much more about following his oath and his conscience. What does it matter is the Commander in Chief is right or wrong? You've received a lawful order and now you follow it to the best of your ability. There's no time or space to be worried about the policy makers decisions or the media's opinion. You do your godamned job, quietly and professionally. Does Mr. Luttrell believe that we need heroes forced down our throats? Is not the fact that those brave men fought and died for ideals that they held dear, regardless of public opinion, not make them heroes? They put their one and only bodies between their homes and wars desolation, nothing more need be said. A professional doesn't need to hate his enemy, disparage him or dehumanize him, he need only to defeat him. He also fails to note something very important about the Rules of Engagement: They are mission specific. The term, 'weapons free' exists for a reason. I wonder if Luttrell has taken time to consider how he would feel about a group of people infiltrating his home state of Texas to kill or capture a known murderer and their decision to kill three Americans who stumbled across them during their mission. Every American should read and re-read this book. Especially the liberal media. Shame on them. But praise, thanks, and honor go out to these warriors who do what the rest of us can not or will not in order to give us the peace and prosperity we enjoy, and also to their families and friends who support them and suffer most when a warrior falls. And if you dissagree with that, keep it to yourself or go live in another country.

Freedom - Patriot - Commitment - Do what it takes.
I found this book to present extremely important messages in a very easy reading way. It will open a lot of naive eyes to the fact that our freedom is not free. I highly recommend this book and especially suggest it be read by all of our younger generation. Marcus Lattrell is a hero, along with everyone who has served our country in the armed services. I say thank you to all of you and God Bless You. (Review Data Last Updated: 2008-02-18 16:25:20 EST)

Once you get into this book it does read like a thriller that you can't put down. In parts I laughed and other parts cried, and it's an important story and a great book. He does tend to bash the liberal media as they can't possibly know what its like to be on the front line. Although I'm liberal in some respects I support our troops and recognize and appreciate their heroism. This book made me appreciate them even more, and it's incredible what a Navy Seal goes through - you marvel that any human could even get through the training.
