With more health professionals recognizing celiac disease for the problem it is, this book was really helpful, in an easy format, in understanding what would help sufferers of celiac disease and what are possible substitutes, using gluten-free foods. Thankfully, more local grocery stores are supplying gluten-free, wheat-free foods so it's not terribly difficult to find relief!

(Hide Review...)  Best book out there!
Reviewer Permalink
Wonderfull! This is the best book out there, I bought many but this one was by far the best! My daughter was only 10 months old when diagnosed. Initially I thought, it wouold be pretty easy to avoid gluten, oh well it's not and I got a bit overwhelmed I still sometimes do! It's hidden in labels such as "natural flavoring" or "coloring" ect. , who knew Soysauce is highly glutenous and while Malt is very glutenous, Maltodextrin on the other hand is not! She wrote the book so easy to read, with lots of little laugh-teasers in it and so you can start in any chapter you want. She herself is a Celiac and has been through all the trials and errors we have been through and or are going through! She helped in every aspect of learning the glutenfree diet and how to live with this, including explaining the desease or diet to people and so on! There is nothing NOT covered!

There is only ONE thing in the book I do disagree totally and that is, that you could use one toaster for both breads, glutenous and non glutenous, you'd just have to carefully whipe the grits inside! Besides risking a new hair-do if you forget to unplugg the toaster first you could never just wipe the gluten off the griss it's that sticky! Since things get hot in there there is no way you can get all of the gluten out and since traces even make the Celiacs sick, my daughter inlcuded, I don't think this is save. I recommend to get a toaster with 4 slots.

I separated the toaster with a big black permanent marker, marked on top several times around the two to-be glutenfree slots including a fat middle-line, as well as the pushbutton and the front. In those four-sloters you can take out the crumble-drawers individually one for two at a time, it is perfectly save to use one toaster for both breads. You just have to pay attention that you do not put glutenous bread in to the glutenfree slots, I had never a problem with it and even though we use both sides everyday, my daughter never had a issue with cross-contamination ever and you don't have to have two toasters!

Good luck, being gluten-sensitive or Celiac sucks, but once you got the hang of the diet (which in average takes about a year until you know ALL the traps and tricks and what not)- it's a lifestyle and becomes easy. I'm on my way there, but still have a bit to go! In either case, I'm the proud parent of a little celiac!

This is the first book I have read on living a Gluten Free life style that was easy reading, enjoyable, funny and totally informative. Most books are informative but boring, dry, and hard to stay interested in. This book is different. It is not theory, but practical. It was not written by an observer but by a doer. This book is also a must for a GF family with kids who must live GF.

I was looking for a book that would gently walk me through the process of avoiding gluten in foods for my daughter. I'm sure this book has that information, but I found myself insulted within the first few chapters as a 'glutenavore' who ate 'contaminated' foods, and was by default unhealthy. If you're looking for help, and not a lecture on the Evils of the Gluten Eaters Lifestyle, this is not the book for you.

My daughter was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease. We found a lot of information on the web for this condition. I ordered this book and it was more informative than anything we found on the Celiac Disease web sights. The book is very informative and written so that the average person can understand what is being said about the disease and its complications. My daughter says that every one diagnosed with Celiac Disease or even a wheat intolerance HAS to read this book. It is that good.

Dana's books have been an invaluable resource to us and she's been at it again with this book! She is always SPOT ON when it comes to the ins and outs of Celiac Disease and the gluten free diet! I bought this book for a recently diagnosed friend but read it first myself. Then I bought another copy for our home because I love being able to have straight forward books like this as a resource when talking to my kids' teachers about Celiac Disease.

To the lady who's doctor told her to not worry about separate toaster's... he doesn't understand the AUTOIMMUNE implications of Celiac Disease if he's telling you not to worry about cross contamination. ANY amount of gluten can be dangerous to a Celiac, symptoms or not! We lost a family member to intestinal lymphoma because of her carelessness with the diet.

I am a recently diagnosed Celiac, so I am starting at square one.

This is a very informative, easy-to-read book that covers a lot of general questions. I even tried one of the recipes (gluten-free quiche) and found it to be very good.

I do think that the author is a little over the top about contamination, etc. I asked my Dr (who has a Celiac child) about using separate toasters, etc and her response was, "Some people have way too much time on their hands."
Once I got beyond the paranoia I am finding this book to be a very practical help

Not so very long ago, the vast majority of people had no idea what gluten was let alone how the mysterious substance affected the body. Those who were put on gluten-free diets for health reasons were pretty much left on their own as even most doctors and dieticians had no clue about which foods actually did or didn't contain gluten. Not only did this cause confusion but likely a lot of unnecessary suffering through the ingestion of gluten from foods that were thought safe, 100% gluten-free, and completely uncontaminated.

Information is slowly spreading to the general public and more and more people are aware that Gluten is in wheat. This true but extremely limited knowledge (gluten is also found in all sorts of other cereal grains, additives, and commercial products) causes many people to believe that they can be supportive of their gluten-free friends or family members by simply not serving bread- how about rice with a generous helping of soya sauce (also high in gluten).

Living Gluten-Free For Dummies simplifies the complexity of a gluten-free diet. This isn't one of those I want to lose weight diets it's an all or nothing lifestyle that has to be followed to the letter to produce the best results. The good news is that living gluten-free isn't about going without. There are plenty of gluten-free options.

This was the first book I read after being diagnosed with celiac disease. I am so glad I started with this one because Danna Korn's perspective is incredibly encouraging, entertaining, and informative. Some of the books that I have read since have scared me to death. Korn finds a way to give you the information you need and then point you to other resources. She does this without making her readers feel paranoid. Her enthusiasm and encouragement make you feel like going gluten-free is like going on a grand adventure. In reality, it certainly isn't always, but I found that her perspective really helped me in the beginning.

Danna actually has lived the gluten free lifestyle since her young son was diagnosed with celiac disease over 15 years ago. This book is a must have for anyone who eats gluten free. I recommend this book to everyone who asks me about celiac and eating gluten free. Danna includes funny "I've been there" type stories that adds a significant amount of credibility and puts the reader at ease. Buy this book if you're not looking for the "doom and gloom" of the more medical-focused books and would rather be inspired about embracing the gluten free life. This book includes recipes, gluten-free friendly kitchen suggestions, shopping suggestions, raising happy and healthy gluten free kids and overcoming emotional obstacles.

This book is a Godsend. It's as simple as that.

Danna Korn joins her readers by sharing personal accounts; she gives clear, well written definitions of celiac disease, wheat intolerance and gluten. There are 65 excellent recipes included that show just how possible it is to follow a gluten free lifestyle. Readers are also treated to tidbits of humor; gems of wisdom and a plethora of good information such as web sites as to where to shop for the wheat-intolerant/celiac regimen. It answers questions clearly and logically and readers come away with a good understanding of how they can live happily on a gluten free regimen. Many people with autism have shown marked improvement by following this regimin. Luke Jackson, the author of "A User Guide to the GF/CF Diet for Autism, Asperger Syndrome and AD/HD" A User Guide to the GF/CF Diet for Autism, Asperger Syndrome and AD/HD discusses how eliminating gluten and casein from his diet and those of his siblings improved their health and general performance.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. It is my Get Out of Jail Free Card and my Passport to a Healthier Life and a New Lifestyle. Hats off to Danna Korn!

Living Gluten-Free For Dummies by Danna Korn is a super-practical and comprehensive guide to living gluten-free.

Korn explains why everyone, not just those with Celiac Disease, would benefit from a gluten free lifestyle. But more importantly she describes HOW to live gluten free--she gives practical advice for grocery shopping (there are TONS of foods that are naturally gluten-free) and how to dine out safely.

Best of all, her approach is one of positivity. It is easy to go gluten-free, and this is a fantastic guide to get you started living healthier!

It has been 28 years since I was diagnosed with Celiac. Back then there was little information and fewer products available for living gluten-free. Reading this book would have been very helpful to me then, and I may have been spared much of the problems I encountered along the way. Even the Dr. who determined my disease made the error of telling me that after the villi had repaired themselves, I should try gluten again!

With its simple "Dummies'" approach this book has definitely improved my outlook on being gluten intolerant. Fortunately this is the first "gluten-free" book I got my hands on. I'm glad I paid the overnight shipping because this book ended a lot of agony for me. "What am I going to eat!?" I've been gluten-free for 2 weeks now and the results are amazing. It's been a long time since I've been pain free (my symptoms are arthritic in nature). This book has helped me become optomistic about being able to stay gluten-free for the long-haul and still enjoy food.

I am very impressed with "Living Gluten-Free for Dummies". It covers much of the information a newly diagnosed celiac should know and also has information for "long time" celiacs. The format is inviting, the "Technical Stuff" is informative, the icons are handy, the recipes are practical and useful, and the index is all inclusive. I plan to recommend that anyone needing to go on a gluten-free diet buy this book. It has been my experience that people wanting information about living gluten-free want this information on a silver platter; this book, in my opinion, is that silver platter.
I like the positive attitude presented in this book; many people meet the diet with a "doom and gloom" attitude; this is not the case of Danna Korn who is positive and practical in her approach.

As the mom of a child who was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance, (still waiting for the results of the rest of the tests) - it was very nice to be able to find a book that is written so a person who is very confused and overwhelmed can understand it!!

There is so much information available regarding Celiac Disease and Gluten Intolerance, but it's so very overwhelming. And, a lot of it is very scientific. I certainly want to learn the mechanics of the illness but the most important thing for me was finding out how to keep my child healthy, and happy.

Mrs. Korn has helped me in more ways than she can imagine by writing this very comprehensive guide to raising a child with Celiac disease.

(Hide Review...)  The information in book IS accurate...
Reviewer Permalink
I hope no one gives any credence to the review that claims (inaccurately) that Danna's book has an inaccuracy. It doesn't! One reviewer wrote that Danna Korn's book had an inaccuracy because she says there's no such thing as an "allergy" to gluten, and he gave the book a bad review as a result (which, by the way, is like saying the entire restaurant is bad because you personally didn't like one item on the menu). But worse yet, this person's critique was faulty. For one thing, gluten is comprised of wheat, barley, and rye. With allergies, you either have an allergy to wheat, and/or to barley, and/or to rye. But you don't have an allergy to "gluten," even though some doctors will deem it that. Furthermore, the reviewer fails to note that Danna's book was reviewed by an M.D., Michelle Pietzak (one of the foremost experts on celiac disease) and Cynthia Rudert, R.D., of Gluten Intolerance Group -- again, one of the foremost experts. Danna doesn't make this stuff up. She's been doing research for 15 years, and has more knowledge than most medical professionals -- and I AM a medical professional. I think it's irresponsible and downright vicious for someone to make such a hasty and mean-spirited post that may prevent others from enjoying the wealth of inspiration and information. The entire essence of the book is about an optimistic approach, and the book is more well-researched and well-supported than any other out there.

(Hide Review...)  Misinformation in book early on leads me to return book to Amazon
Reviewer Permalink
I have not read the whole book, early on the author boldly proclaims "there is no such thing as a gluten allergy." I was recently diagnosed with full blown IgE ALLERGY to gluten (as well as IgE to wheat, rye, oats, and barley). Coming across Danna Korn's incorrect information right at the beginning of the book really turned me off...how much of the rest of the book is inaccurate? I just couldn't get past it, and am returning the book to Amazon immediately as "performing below expectations." I should have noticed that Ms. Korn was not an MD, esp. not an allergist, but also it appears that her medical consultants were celiac specialist, not allergists either. From where does her allergy information come? She also states that the spectrum of severity runs all the way from allergic responses (she presents them as least important or severe) to sensitivity (which she places in the middle of the spectrum) to celiac (the most severe -- it is!). My allergists have placed sensitivity below allergy, and they are MDs. My allergic symptoms are VERY severe. Because of such a sweeping claim about IgE allergies that is utterly false being included in a book that I thought was recommended reading, I will never purchase another one of the "Dummies" series, either. I'm sure she knows a great deal about celiac, but then the book should be called "Celiac Disease for Dummies," not "Gluten-Free for Dummies." I am glad Amazon permits return of books that are unsatisfactory, I am a bit annoyed that I have to pay the shipping to send it back.

This reassuring guide offers hope and inspiration for the millions adversely affected by gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. Featuring 65 tasty, easy-to-make recipes for gluten-free meals and snacks, it discusses the common and hidden sources of gluten, how to deal with feelings of deprivation, testing for celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, and tips on shopping and eating out. I'm at the airport posting this review and looking forward to my long flight now that I have this book. Halfway through I simply cannot put it down. Just like my other book called "The Truth About Caffeine: How Companies That Promote it Deceive Us and What We Can Do About It" My doctor recommended it to all of his patients and I can tell why, its got me off my red bull fix. Available on Amazon so buy it. Oh, gotta run or I'll miss my flight!.

I am a dietitian and also a Celiac. I have tons of gluten-free books including from this author. This is my favorite! I am going to recommend this to all of my celiac patients. I read the whole thing through even though it is sort of like a reference book, because it was entertaining! I especially love some of her made up words like "glutenated". She made the book fun!
