I'm afraid I can only review the small part of this book that I was able to stomach. There seems to be at least one error on every page. This book is simply propaganda for the Brady Campaign's anti gun agenda.

if "Jack and the Beanstalk" is sold out.

Although to be honest; in "Jack and the Beanstalk", the "magic beans" actually WORKED, while in "Lethal Logic" the "magic bean" statistics are apparently self-generated and the statements made aren't supported with logic or research-able data.

The book was very repetitive of the same baseless anti-gun talking points. I found this very helpful in teaching reasoning and logical thinking to my 4th grade daughters. They "ripped it apart" on every page and the repetitious nature of the book allowed them to "catch" repeats of the same illogical and poorly thought-out "talking points".
For example; where the book indicated that the availability of guns causing an increasing in suicides; we looked up the data on Japan's suicide rates and found them nearly double that of the United States, yet guns are banned.
Using the flawed train of thought found in "Lethal Logic"; this must mean Japan's high suicide rates are due to the lack of guns.

The girls enjoyed learning that when England allowed the common subject to carry guns: The police officers actually patrolled the "gun laden" streets of "Jack the Ripper" fame... "armed" only with a stick and a whistle.
But now that guns are "banned" for law-abiding subjects, as endorses in "Lethal Logic", more and more officers are carrying guns because "the streets are simply too dangerous". This would seem to disprove the contention in "Lethal Logic" and proves the bumper sticker: "When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns" to be correct.

As we are a military family, the girls quickly caught the lie that stated: "This latest tragedy, at a heavily fortified army base, ought to convince more Americans to reject the argument that the solution to gun violence is to arm more people with more guns in more places".
The girls quickly pointed out: "That was another massacre in a `Gun-Free Zone'!" (We had done a little research to learn how many of the well known U.S. massacres were in "Gun-Free Zones", the most recent massacre that we found which wasn't in a "Gun-Free Zones" was the Waco Massacre. Another incident of "Government slaughtering it citizens"?)

I gave the girls an assignment: If "reasonable" and "life saving gun laws" are real, find the U.S. cities with STRICT gun control laws and crime rates lower than the national average. I suggested DC, Detroit, NYC and Chicago. :)

When the girls asked why anyone would write such a book, I said that the organization the author works for, makes their living convincing the law-abiding to send them money to work to strip them of their Freedom.
They asked: "Is this what you mean when you say `A fool and his money are soon parted'?

So yes, this was a very useful book.

I have been trying to keep up with both sides of the gun control argument, and think that Henigan missed an opportunity here. Presented in this book is much in the way of old studies (and to some people, discredited), and not much current. A lot has changed in the last 10 years with the passage in many states of concealed carry laws. I was hoping to see the results of crime rate changes in those states.
Henigan claims that we are doing isn't working to curb violence, but the Department of Justice continues to report that violent crime is going down each year.
In the recent FBI study "Violent Encounters: A Study of Felonious Assaults On Our Nation's Law Enforcement Officers", the FBI stated under the section Weapon Choice-
- "Predominately handguns were used in the assaults on officers and all but one were obtained illegally, usually in street transactions and thefts."
- "None of the attackers interviewed was 'hindered by any law-federal, state or local-that has ever been established to prevent gun ownership. They just laughed at gun laws.' "
Henigan needs to come back to the table with more than pat rhetoric. Gives the public the clear, unvarnished facts, not his feelings.
With the way this was written, his credibility is suspect and he appears to be a tool of the gun control crowd.

I'll not pretend I'm neutral on the subject; I'm strongly pro-Constitution. I'm glad I didn't buy this book, even second hand. This has to be the most absurd piece of writing on this subject I've ever encountered, and that's saying something. The author apparently is an educated man, but without a shred of intellectual honesty. This book consists of the typical statistic twisting and histrionics that characterize the one-worlders who won't be constrained by facts or logic in their journalism. Dedicated anti-gun zealots will find this a fine addition to their libraries. Any pro-liberty reader will find it useful only for amusement. For someone not very familiar with the issue, it serves as a fine example of the Brady Bunch's limitless capacity of writing about what they believe regardless of how may contradictory facts they are faced with.

Do these folks (the Brady Bunch, Handgun Control etc) ever even THINK about the more than 100 MILLION people murdered by gun control governments during the 20th Century alone. That's over 1 MILLION per year.

No, they don't and neither does this book.

Do they ever honestly separate out the suicide deaths, or check to see that repeated research shows those who wish to kill themselves will find a way whether they use a gun or not?

No, and not this book either.

Do these folks ever give the same weight to the 2nd Amendment as to the 1st or 4th, or 5th.

No. Not here either.

Do they mention the 40,000 gun control laws already own the books in the US?

No. Of course not.

It isn't even possible to actually control guns among CRIMINALS on an ISLAND like Britain, Australia, or even Jamaica -- so their theory is to make guns illegal for the law abiding and then the BUMPER STICKER this book decries BECOMES true:

When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

Does this book ever thanks people of good will carrying firearms who won the right to free speech that allows such drivel to be printed?

You guessed it.

There are only three kinds of people who will read this book: those who hate guns and want to hear their misconceptions repeated; those who love FREEDOM and won't to review this for errors (every page); and the unsuspecting who may be swayed by half-truths and lies.

I was hoping that Mr. Henigan would have a new and interesting take on the gun issue, but this work could have been put together by an intern recycling old Brady Campaign press releases. He consistently ignores superb academic work on gun laws and safety done by a number of prominent criminologists and economists in order to rehash the tired old completely disproved idea that somehow more gun control will provide more safety. He uses cherry-picked and often distorted statistics to 'prove' his case, while sidestepping the actual question and ignoring or dismissing any contrary data.

A good example of this is his gun suicide argument. He 'debunks' arguments that gun availability does not affect overall suicide by stating that 92% of attempted gun suicides are completed, which sounds horrifying until you realize that he never addressed the actual question at all. If he had wanted to look at the research, there are a number of unbiased studies which show that availability of firearms may change suicide methods, but it does not affect overall suicide rates.

Overall I would have to say that this book is a severe disappointment, coming as it does from an esteemed public interest lawyer.

the brady crowd believes that a god given right is subject to licensing and regulation.
hogwash.
the solution is tougher sentences for offenders, and more freedoms for law abiding citizens.

I am new to this issue, and was looking to gain some knowledge on the subject. If you want to read a poorly written rant directed at the NRA and gun owners based on opinion and a very selective use of statistics buy this book. If you want real unbiased information, fact, and ideas on how to effectively address the issue this book is not for you. What we need is an organization that it's true agenda is to reduce gun violence. The Brady Campaign's only interest is in new laws and further restricting gun ownership, not to reduce gun violence. Would be nice to have an organization that would take an objective look at the issue, and get down to the actual heart of the issue. This extremism on both sides is getting us no where. What's sad is that if the NRA and Brady Campaign would work together on the issue they could accomplish great things together. However, the Brady Campaign has proven they have no interest in pursuing the issue in any manner that does not involve banning this and banning that, restricting this and restricting that, etc. The Brady Campaign needs to stop attacking CCW holders for starters, maintaining a list on CCW crimes is one of their favorite things to do. The idea the permit made them do it is ludicrous. Think about it, they actually think that an individual that will willingly take someone's life will only do so if the law permits them to legally carry a concealed weapon. Obviously if they will commit a crime like murder this individual could not possibly care less if the law says they can stick a hand gun in their coat or not. Hopefully one day an organization will emerge that its true mission will be reducing gun violence by any means that actually works, and not only through enacting new laws and attacking the law-abiding. The brady campaign would be surprised with most gun owners if they would give them a chance and not try and depict them as terrorists and such.

Money people send to the Brady anti-gun campaign goes into the author's pocket. What he can't stuff in his pocket, goes into the pockets of D.C. lobbyists who work to take your constitutional rights away.

The author writes paragraph after paragraph of anti-constitutional propaganda.

All his statistics are self-generated. None of his so called "facts" can be found in the results columns of any professional agencies.

Today they want your guns, tomorrow they want your newspapers, next week they'll work to ban the right of the public to peacefully assemble, then, of course we'll all be safe (from everything except the next Hitler).

If you want to do something good for America this holiday season, save your cash and give it to the Salvation Army so they can continue to feed the homeless; and the deserving.

Please don't feed this animal (the author), let PETA feed him.

If you want to make this villian into a millionaire, buy his book, make him rich. He's already making thousands off of the less fortunate Brady family.

Remember: before Hitler, Stalin and Tojo murdered 20 million Jews and other innocent people across Europe and Asia, they first had to disarm the citizens of Germany, Russia and of our oriental friends.

This book contains misinformation right in its initial description:

"... the author contends that the gun lobby's remarkable success in blocking passage of lifesaving gun laws is the result, in large part, of its relentless and effective use of these simple and resonant messages."

There is no conclusive evidence from anywhere in the world that gun control works to save lives, but overwhelming historical proof that gun control has been used by governments (Russia, China, Nazi Germany, Turkey, and more) to disarm and murder at least 55 MILLION people in the last century.

Buying this book is only throwing good money after faulty logic and bad ideas. Want to reduce firearm-related crime and violence in this country? Start investigating the REAL causes, not chasing the fantasy of gun control to solve the problem.

Isn't this the same Brady Center, whose spokesperson, in reference to the recent terrorist attack at Fort Hood Texas, recently commented "This latest tragedy, at a heavily fortified army base, ought to convince more Americans to reject the argument that the solution to gun violence is to arm more people with more guns in more places"?

[...]

The above statement is patently ridiculous on its face; the phrase "arm more people" clearly contradicts the earlier phrase "heavily fortified army base". Would not a "heavily fortified" facility by definition already be crawling with armed people? Add this to the fact that the "heavily fortified army base" comment is at best a misstatement of the actual facts, or at worst, a bald faced lie designed to mislead people and push a particular political agenda. The fact of the matter regarding these domestic army bases is that they have been "gun free zones" since the early 90's due to policy set for by then president Bill Clinton.

If one is looking for serious commentary backed up by verifiable facts on the issue of the right to keep and bear arms or the criminal misuse of firearms, one should look elsewhere. However, if the reader is looking for pure entertainment value, or if the reader believes that citizens should be disarmed, and that the only people who should be armed are law enforcement, criminals & terrorists, and the reader wants to try and vindicate their personal beliefs, than this book might be of help.

I picked this book up to see just what the Brady Campaign Against Violence's argument was. The logic or rather lack thereof behind the arguments is painful. They make just enough sense on the surface to hold together, but under any kind of scrutiny their fallacy becomes apparent.

Time has proven that gun laws don't work. If they did England would be a much safer place. You can not eliminate human nature by banning tools that can be used destructively.

Cars and swimming pools both kill more people in the US annually than do firearms. Is there gun violence; Yes. Do I wish we lived in a polite peaceful society where everyone got along; sure. But, wishing doesn't make it so, nor does banning a tool that can used for protection or destruction.

When you get down to it. If there was a magic wand that would dis-invent the firearm we would still have murder, rape, and robbery. Such acts were a part of the world before firearms and will be in the future.

Criminals who by definition have to regard for their fellow human beings also have no regard for laws. This is the mechanism by which firearm prohibition can make the situation worse. You create defenseless victims.

The world is a dangerous place and it is our evolutionary will to survive that has allowed us to become what we are. It is my human right and nature to defend myself and my family from bodily harm.

This book is full of lies. The statistics used are unfounded. The Brady campaign has a hidden agenda to disarm all Americans. I didn't realize how bad the Brady Campaign was until I read this book. The states that have the most gun ownership have the lowest crime rate and The states that have the strictest gun control laws have the worst crime rate and are the most dangerous how can this be? Well, it's because criminals do not care about laws. The Brady campaign actually funds criminal activity so they can stay in business. Did you know Sara Brady actually committed a felony and purchased a rifle illegally for her son? Do not buy this book, you will only be funding a group that funnels money to terrorists and prostitutes.

This is an excellent book for people who are interested in a logical analysis of the bumper sticker arguments of gun advocates. People who sleep with a gun under their pillow will not be convinced, but those with an open mind will find the arguments persuasive.
Henigan analyzes the assertions of the gun lobby and gun advocates such as Professor Gary Kleck. He then finds the weaknesses and contradictions in their arguments, using facts, statistics and logic. He compares the homicide rate in the United States (very high) with that of all other high-income nations (much lower), and points out that the USA has the highest rate of gun ownership in the industrialized world. He also documents the cynicism and recklessness of the National Rifle Association, which ruthlessly attacks any suggestion of the need for any new (or even any) gun regulations. At times, the NRA vehemently attacks the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and calls their agents "fascists", while at other times it explains that we don't need new gun laws, we just "need to enforce the laws we have". Then it instructs its handsomely paid supporters in Congress to make sure the ATF doesn't have the means to enforce the laws.
This book is very well-written and insightful. I recommend it for everyone who wants to understand why the United States has the highest homicide rate, and the highest gun death rate, of all high-income countries, and how to lower these tragically high rates. The life that could be saved may be yours, or that of someone you love.

Before reading Lethal Logic, I would describe myself as very skeptical of gun control measures. This book changed my position significantly. Henigan makes a very strong case that gun control measures save lives. He takes on several different slogans of the NRA, starting with the popular "When Guns are Outlawed, Only Outlaws Will Have Guns." He makes the powerful point that many illegal guns were originally bought legally and then got on the black market. I recommend this powerful book to anyone interested in this issue, though it is repetitive at times.

I am enjoying the book. It depends overly much on quotes and is rather repetitive. It does a effective job of accomplishing what it set out to do, however.

This book outlined many of the artuments that limit people's thinking about Gun Policy. It shows some of complex issues that don't make it through the typcial sloganeering we hear in gun policy debates. Well worth reading to understand the positions of both sides. Having been writtend by a VP of the Brady Coalition, it definately leans towards one side of the issue. However, the principled discussion of the arguments will let a thoughtful reader come to his or her own conclusions.

A trenchant, well-reasoned expose of the hollow common lies the gun lobby inflicts upon our country. A must read for all who oppose the NRA.

This book is a MUST READ for anyone concerned with the proliferation of senseless gun violence that plagues our cities & small towns alike. It illustrates the methods the National Rifle Association (NRA), arguably the strongest single-issue special-interst group in the U.S. manipulates Congress into doing its' bidding by voting against ANY & ALL legislation regarding the ownership, or posession of firearms of ANY TYPE. Dennis Henigan literally "shoots holes" in the NRA's rationale at every turn, & shows how its' shameless use of scare tactics endangers all Americans every day.

I need to start out by telling you that I 'Am' a supporter of Gun Rights in this great country of ours. I only wish the author of this sham would just admit that as well. Did anyone notice who the Author works for? Do the terms 'Vested Interest' or 'Conflict of Interest' come to mind in any context while reading this book? It certainly did for me.

Though I am a supporter of the right that was key to creating the United States as a sovereignty, I find it both worth my time and expense to keep up with what the 'Un-informed' are saying about our right. This book is (pardon the catch phase) - 'More of the Same' or just Same 'Ol, Same 'Ol.

Since I 'Did' actually read it (unlike many of those who obviously didn't but felt compelled to comment on it - Same 'Ol), I can honestly say that if maintains the same mantra of how victimized the anti-gun forces have been by the shear power of the NRA. The NRA is not the issue here, it is the public's belief that more good comes from self-reliance and individual responsibility that does being dependent on government controls. I suggest the anyone who has doubts about the power of that concept should look more into the history of the rise of the Nazi party in Germany and how it was able to execute as well as it did over a vastly larger group of victims. Take the time to see the new version of "Shindler's List" and then let's discuss how our rights to self protection and reliance on Government have meaning to you.

Anyway I digress. In terms of the book itself, I was not surprised to see the mention of selective statistics related to gun violence in this country, yet again taken completely out of context with the positive and directly correlated statistics on the reduction of 'Personal' crimes we have seen as a result of expanded use of firearms in the 32 states that have 'Liberalized' (though I'm using that term specifically here) their Gun Rights laws. The right of civilians to carry concealed firearms, and as a result having the opportunity of defending themselves from the multitude of sociopaths we as citizens are forced to live with (primarily due to government policies geared at buying votes), is simply 'Poo Poo'ed' by this author in this 'Trash' called a book.

Where is the comparison of the stats related to changes in carry laws to violent crime?

Where is the comparison of child deaths to between Guns, Home Swimming Pools, and parents who have just left their kids in a car?

Where is the comparison of Knife murders in completely gun-controlled countries to Gun murders in this Country? - and please, do not include the criminals killed by police officers in the act of committing violent crimes simply because they are under the magic age of 23 used by some government agencies who classify people as children at that age.

I will end by asking those who read this to keep in mind that I do not get paid by the pro-gun lobby, but in-fact volunteer my personal time trying to keep everyone honest on this issue.

'Knowledge is Power' - Oh no, is that a pro-gun slogan? Sorry.

The trolls who have trashed this book in the Amazon reviews obviously have not bothered to read it -- gun rights advocates too often seem to think that their strong belief in the right to bear arms justifies shouting down anyone who disagrees with them. Have gun control advocates ever overstated their case? Sure -- but there is no comparison to the intellectual dishonesty that has been the hallmark of the leading gun rights groups in this country since at least the mid-seventies.

The extremes with which this work is reviewed prove how correct the premise of Mr. Henigan's book really is - (with the possible exception of abortion) gun control polarizes Americans like no other subject and, as a result, we as a society remain stuck often staring at each other shouting arguments (sometimes not very coherent arguments from either side) across a wide abyss. For decades, Mr. Henigan has fought for gun control - to the extent that there have been successes, he has largely been responsible for these gains. Over the years, the attacks on Mr. Henigan (and others) from the NRA (and others) have been merciless, but he bravely continues on. Despite what its detractors claim, this book is neither poorly written nor poorly reasoned. To the contrary, it is informative, easy to read, and thought provoking. I favor gun control and have long found Mr. Henigan's arguments persuasive - of course you would expect that. But ultimately for people who are willing to base their ultimate position (whatever it may be) more on thought and less on emotion, that is not the point. I have friends who strongly disagree with me on this issue. I hope to share this book with many of them, not to further inflame argument, but to move our differences away from angry meaningless platitudes (from both sides) and towards a more meaningful discussion. I suspect that some of these friends will dismiss the book in much the same way that some of these reviews on Amazon unfairly dismiss it. There is not much I can do about that. Other friends will strongly disagree with the arguments, but will appreciate Mr. Henigan's efforts to foster a meaningful discussion.

This is a must-read for anyone concerned with the issue of gun regulation. Written in a calm, well-reasoned manner, it debunks the bumper-sticker arguments so popular with the NRA. It will probably make no difference to those whose minds are already made up, but I would recommend it to those who are still learning and thinking about the issue.

Far too many incorrect statements to be worth reading. It's the author's job to substantiate their claims, not the reader's.
