This is a great book for it to be free. Most books that are free are kind of cheesy but this one was a rare find. I love Lucan so sexy I could almost picture every part of him. I can't wait to read the next book. Keep up the good work.

Ok, by now you have probably read other reviewers liken Ms. Adrian to JR Ward and her Black Dagger Brotherhood series and to be fair there are alot of similiarities. But if we could all put on our big boy pants and get over it. You may find that you could enjoy this version of a Vampire tale. Since imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I am glad that someone did not try to stumble through writing a crappy story which would have suckered me out of my $8 bucks. Once Ms. Adrian gets going, this book has it's own flair and I am sure by the time she begins to get deeper into her own series she will endeavor to put a stamp of her own on the world she has created.

this book centers on Vampire Lucan Thorne. A First Generation Vampire who is the head of a Breed of warriors who look to stop the growth of the Rogue vampires and there minions. Vampires who are sufferring from extreme bloodlust and who seek to anhiliate the remaining Breeds. Gabrielle Maxwell is a photographer who after visiting Boston's hottest club to with a group of friends comes across a human victim being mauled by Rogues. Being a quick thinker she snaps shots of the carnage and makes a fast escape. However here report to the police leaves her in great jeopardy because they simply do not believe her or her account of what she saw. Enter Lucan Thorne who not only believes her but is attracted to her becasue she carries the mark of a Breedmate. Breedmates are humans who are marked and who can mate and propegate the vampire race. Is this what Gabrielle signed up for. Well no but as she gets deeper into Lucan's world and begins to figure out why several puzzles in her past now make sense, it becomes clear to her that her place is not only with Lucan but with the Breed warriors in their efforts to continue the race. The sex in the book is good and the pacing is nice enough not to slow down and help a reader loose interest. I do feel the end was sort of wrapped up too quickly but even that was not a hardship. I have already purchased Kiss of Crimson and look forward to test driving what Ms. Adrian does with the world she created.

I was looking for a new series to read until Gena Showalter and JR Ward's next books come out and saw this one was free and figured I would try it. Boy, am I glad I did!! I am now starting on book 5 in the series, Midnight Rising and each one is better than the last. Lara Adrian just got herself a new junkie, oops, fan.

I bought this book because it was free and ended up buying the other 5 and can't wait for #7!
These books give a new spin to the "vampire world" and I actually like it. I must admit my responce to the half human and not undead view of vampires was a little sceptical at first but it made for a great read. Lara Adrian is an awesome storyteller and for those spouting that this is a rip off of the Black Dagger Brotherhood- No Way! These are great books and I can't wait until January.

...Because I'd be pretty upset if I had paid for this garbage.

The plot was interesting, and the author had some pretty original ideas with the vampires. But, the characters fall flat, as does most of the dialogue. I found a lot of the language the author uses as unoriginal and uninspired.

Also, the sex scenes were explicit and gratuitous, leaving nothing to the imagination. It seems like they were the true purpose for the book, with the rest of the story just serving as filler.

I will not be reading the rest of the series, as I could care less about the characters, or the good-vs-evil vampire war.

I just finished the Midnight Breed series and am anxiously awaiting the next book. I won't give a synopsis of the story since that's pretty well covered already in other posts, but just wanted to add my recommendations to read this series. I got interested in paranormal stories after reading Twilight and have since moved on to other authors like Jeaniene Frost, Laurell Hamilton, JR Ward, CL Wilson, Karen Chance, Eileen Wilkes, and Lyndsay Sands. If you are a fan of these types of books, you'll enjoy this series. I couldn't put them down!

I never read any of Lara Adrian's books but got hooked on this first book. I never liked vampire books but this was different and interesting and kept me reading. I'm on my third book and I'm reading the whole series to see what is happening to all the chacters. Some things sound rediculas but with some movies they are making, it's entertaining. I would say, read the first book and see for yourself.

The first book in the Midnight Breed series. If you are considering this book you may as well get them all. Each book segues so smoothly into the next. I read for the entertainment value and this book and the rest of the series has it. Mystery, drama, erotic romance, fantasy, damsel in distress and the incredibly sexy vampire rescuer. Lara Adrian has such a discriptive way of writing that you can put yourself into the frame of the picture you are creating. I am now on my sixth book and look forward to any and all future Midnight Breed books. So, take a couple of hours and tuck yourself into a comfy couch with Kiss of Midnight. You will love it.

This was a free download for my Kindle and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Initially I thought it would be great for my 14 year old daughter (she's a Twilight fan) but the heavy sex scenes part way in changed that. It's fine for mature readers that don't mind graphic bedroom scenes along with their gore but it's not a kid's book at all. Overall I thought the book was well written with pretty good character development. There's a little bit of "why in the world would she ever do that?", but not enough to be annoying.

Kiss of Midnight was a free Kindle download that was worth reading. It's not bad for a free book. The plot is slow and the book does not keep a fast past. Kiss of Midnight is about a young woman who discovers her world is full of vampires that no one else sees. The main character also discovers that she is a breedmate (she can reproduce a vampire's baby), as she begins to fall in love with a man whom she has no idea is a vampire. In the book the good vamps are the breeds and the bad vamps are the rogues. This was not as interesting as the twilight series, but it was an okay read.

I took a chance and downloaded this book to my Kindle because it was free. I really like vampire themed novels and this did not disappoint. It had action and romance. It was sexy but sometimes gratuitious. I feel that the author could leave a bit more to the imagination. I've read the first three books in this series (and will probably read more after getting through the books I have in my TBR pile). All three had interesting, fast-moving plots, with good tension/resolution between the main characters. I know this series is often compared to the Black Dagger series. I actually like this series a little better than the BDB series due to the contrived slang (and other issues) of the BDB series. So far, so good... :)

I initially downloaded this book as one of my first "freebies" for my Kindle. It sounded good and so I downloaded the sample. Having just devoured the Twilight saga, I thought I would try another vampire series. Boy was I shocked with the language! It seemed really forced by the writer for "shock" and the sex scenes were forced down your throat(no pun intended). I was very curious about the characters and continued to read because I wanted to find out what Gabrielle's story was and why Lucan was so tormented by her. I loved how he becomes so protective of her from the first time they meet, and wanted to see how their attraction to one another would develop. (I'm a hopeless romantic, what can I say?) So, I had to make a decision, keep reading and ignore the sex and language being thrown at me and find out what I wanted to know, or stop reading and wonder what happened to the characters I was starting to become attached to. Overall,I enjoyed the development of the charcaters relationship and the origins of this type of vampire in comparisson to the sterotype stories we've all read. I was so engrossed in the story that I finished it in 4 hours. I would have liked for Ms. Adrian to write the story without all the explicit sex and language. I feel the story would have stood on its own without the gratuitous sex and language. If you're prudent, this is NOT the story for you.

The story in this book is fantastic! However the oral and other sex scenes, and language were too nasty for my taste. I would have given it 5 stars if there was a "cleaner" version. I'm new to this genre. Wanted to see what all the excitement was about. Turns out vampires are just like any other alpha hero. Well, except for that bloodlust thing. And that immortality thing. Anyway, there was something that kept nagging at me after the story was over SPOILER WARNING: Why couldn't Rio smell Eva's deception? If she was with other vampires, wouldn't he (or any of the other vampires) have known it? I don't think that was dealt with at all in the book....unless I overlooked it. Anyway, a good read for this first timer.

Lara Adrian has created an alien race that has been living with humans for thousands of years. The first generation of these creatures, the Ancients, crash landed on earth. They were from a dark distant planet. In order to survive, they fed on the blood of humans. Their hunger, so savage, wiped out an entire populations of humans. In rare instances, these ancients would successfully breed with human females. These females were rare and called Breedmates.

Lucan Thorne, the main character in the first book of The Midnight Breed Series, was sired by one of these Ancients. He leads a group of warrior vampires called the Breed in order to protect their race and as well as the human race from Rogues, vampires who surrendered to the insanity of bloodlust.

When Gabrielle Maxwell witnesses a band of Rogues savagely murder a human, she was pulled in Lucan's world. Although he is sworn to protect, Gabrielle causes him to lose control - something that is dangerous for an Ancient descendant. Little did he realize, losing control was only the beginning. Gabrielle was getting ready to change his life forever.

This was a book I was sad to see end. Thankfully, there are six more in this series with the seventh out at the end of 2009. One of the highlights is how Lara Adrian focuses solely on Lucan and Gabrielle, making them a priority of the story. Nowadays, paranormal romance authors are having love blossom not only between the hero and the heroine, but another couple as well. I realize this is a set up for the next book, but it's a turnoff for me. This author's story telling skills are so engrossing, I don't care who the next main characters are. I just want to read more. The story might not be classified as original, but it's solid and the author's writing style is powerfully passionate.

(Hide Review...)  Completely Incompatible with the BDB series
Reviewer Permalink
I picked this book on recommendations that it was similar to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series...so not the case. This book is definitely all paranormal romance, unlike Dark Lover, IMO the most dark paranormal romance out of the BDB series is closer to being a hybrid between dark urban fantasy and dark paranormal romance. Sure there are similarities between the two series: 1) they are both vampire series; 2)six warriors protecting its race; 3)bonded-mating and that's where the similarities end. This book didn't even come close to BDB series and I don't think the two should be compared at all. This book was extremely predictable, whereas BDB books are usually complex. I can't even say that I found this book entertaining in the least to keep my attention. I will not be reading the rest of the series and therefore, I can't recommend this book to dark urban fantasy readers, those with or without patience to get to the paper-thin plot.

I know it's a 'genre' thing, but even so, the quality of writing was stale, the characters were not at all interesting; after reading about 30% of the book, I wanted the Lucan vampire to die or get his balls kicked in, the lady to just get a conventional job or go back to school, and wishing there was a much better description or use of Boston. This piece of crap could've been plotted about any city. Thankfully, its only on my Kindle, so I can just delete it and forget that it ever existed.

Breedmate sounds suspiciously like Broodmare, and that's just what this chick is going to be. That, and the occasional midnight snack. The bad boy hero fights against his feeling for her, but in the end (doesn't it always work out this way?) her amazing personality and incredible body win him over. Oh, that and the mind blowing sex! You'd think after reading all these novels that hot, hunky, larger than life (in every sense) guys are just a dime a dozen, wouldn't you? Oh, but they'd need to be since the incredibly beautiful, talented and sexy women are everywhere, too. It wasn't a bad read, just a little on the sappy side.

The author has a way of grasping every detail which paints a beautiful image in your mind like scenes from a movie. I can't ever remember reading a book that made me 'feel' like this one. Read it and you will no doubt know what I mean. What every woman wants but only a rare few ever find.
Excellent read if you are into vampires and such fantasy. If men read this book a lot more women would be a lot happier in certain aspects of life!

Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian
A not so bad read. I had a really hard time getting into the story. The first half of the book is slow and a little depressing. The heroine, Gabrielle, feels like she does not fit in. She comes across solitary and this seclusion makes her personality hard to pin down. I didn't get a sense of "knowing" her.

The hero, Lucan, is a man fighting against his bloodlust. He seeks out Gabrielle and then rejects her then seeks her again then rejects her again. I kept asking myself if they were ever going to get together, because here I am with only a couple of chapters left and he has rejected her once again.

The last half of the book, when Gabrielle finally knows everything, was much more engrossing to read. I actually felt more involved with the story and more involved in the interactions of the characters. Too bad the author didn't have Gabrielle learn the truth right away, the first half of the book is almost a waste. Gabrielle thinks she is going crazy, Lucan rejecting Gabrielle, Gabrielle going to the police only to be told she is crazy, Lucan rejecting Gabrielle, Gabrielle seeing Lucan feed and thinking she is crazy...(you get my point).

I will continue on with the series. Even though the book is not getting rave reviews from me it is a fresh take on the vampire and I am interested enough to see how the next book goes.

Don't waste your time on this. I wanted to read a good vampire book that had a strong story and could continue into other books, this was not what I wanted. It had a mediocre story, which I was fine with, There was sex that was okay. (I'm not opposed to sex in books, this just wasn't written very well.) I would have been fine with it, but then the writer added lots of swears. Sex was f***ing, and the guys would say stuff like "let's do this b***h", or "muther f***er", which would completely pull me out of the story. I never once felt even slightly satisfied with it.

Buyer (or downloader) beware: This book is an EROTIC romance novel with VERY explicit sex scenes in them.

If you're considering downloading this for your Twilight-enthralled teen to read: DON'T.

Other than that, it's an okay book. Nothing special. The "romance" moves too quickly to be believable, even with a vampire's sensual aura pushing things along. It does have a refreshing take on the whole vampire story; only males are vampires and the way they originated is quite different from what you're used to. There's a quick explanation thrown in for the ancient civilizations that disappeared without a trace, enough to make you say "Hmmm..." and ponder the possibilities. The story moves along at a good pace, making the book a quick read.

For those who purposely download it *for* the erotic romance angle, this is my first time reading a book like this so I'm no authority on how much of the content is usually devoted to... heavy breathing. There's quite a bit of it here though, so the lulls between the "action" are short.

The one star is for there being no mention at all in the book's description that this is strictly 18+ material with extremely explicit sexual scenes. As for the story itself... meh... 3.5 stars.

Honestly I read this book because I got it free on Kindle - through my iphone. I had never heard of the series. But once I started reading it I found that is was well-written. This is very similar to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series that I just finished reading.

There 2 main characters Lucan Thorne and Gabrielle Maxwell. The book also introduces you to supporting characters, which will take the series forward. I have only read this book so far, but after finishing it I bought it and the other 5 books in the series. I have since passed it on to my co-worker...she has really enjoyed it. When she is done she will hand it off to another girl here is the office.

Lucan Thorne is the eldest and therefore the leader of The Order. The Order is group of fierce (all male) warriors, crossbreeds of otherworldly and human origins. Their only mission is to protect "The Breed." The Breed is all of the civilian vampires. This means The Order must wipe out all Rogues. The Rogues are vampires who have given themselves over to Bloodlust and become savage creatures. They are junkies who will do anything for their next fix of blood. Gabrielle Maxwell is a photographer with special sight. She is out clubbing one night and she sees what she believes is a murder. This is where her path and Lucan's cross. Lucan is intrigued by Gabrielle, but his warrior life has no place for a human. Well...maybe.

This book isn't exactly bad, but it isn't good either. If you don't mind dialogue that is ridiculous at best, characters that are inconsistent and stereotyped, a plot that is undeveloped and predictable, then it might be a good choice for you. If you love romance novels and Penthouse Letters, but don't want to be caught reading either one, then it's probably a great choice for you. If you would rather have a little writing style and some complexity of thought instead of a lot of gratuitous sex, then I would pass this one up.

(I truly would not even give this 2 stars for myself, but I'm trying to be fair to the genre)

I had read all of Shannon Drake's vampire novels and loved them...they were contemporary and witty. So, I was looking forward to reading another vampire series. I ordered the first three books in The Midnight Breed series. I wished I had just ordered the first one, because I stopped reading it half way through. I found it to be boring and stagnant. It moves slowly and there seems to be no real point. You have to care about the characters in a book, and these characters are flat. So, I will continue to hope that Shannon Drake writes more! Sorry!

After devouring the BDB series, I was excited to try this. But it really seemed like a bad "rip off" of BDB. The idea of the story was not a good one and I didn't like the author's writing at all. In fact, I cared so little about these characters that I couldn't even finish the book. Very disappointing.

I just started downloading kindle books to my iPod touch and got Lara Adrian's Kiss of Midnight for free. I would never have chosen this kind of book on my own. But free is free! I loved it, couldn't put it down and have since downloaded 4 more of her books. Thanks Amazon for introducing me to a great new author!

As I was reading this I got a sense of deja vu. Then I remembered where I had seen it before. This is just a ripoff of The Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

Better than I expected as I typically don't read vampire books. Fast read that kept me interested the entire time.

This entire series was truly one of the best books I have read in a long time. You will love every book in the series. Great story, fast past, wonderful relationships, great over all story throughout the series.

I made myself finish the book but kept thinking how cheesy it was. The sex scenes were lame & there wasn't any depth to any of the characters. There was no excitement that made me want keep turning the page... what a waste of time.

I got this for free for my Kindle. I was not disappointed. It was such a good story that I would have purchased it. The characters are strong, and the author did a great job with all the descriptions without making it
overly detailed. If one is looking for a great vampire story with excitment and of course some steamy love en, then give this book a try.

I "bought" this book for my K2 because it was free. I don't normally like vampire books but I have to say that this was a great surprise. I loved the book and ended up buying all the other books that are out in the series. Thanks Amazon for making this book free - it encouraged me to read it (which I never would have done) and I loved it.

(Hide Review...)  The male lead is not likable.
Reviewer Permalink
I really like this genre and was excited to try a new author. I also like males leads who are on the dark side. But Lucan was not likable. Their first sexual encounter he practically rapes her in her sleep. Then he kills a teenage boy. He also tells her, "I want to F you hard." The book also romanticizes cutting. Vampires are the descendants of aliens! I am only a third of the way through and I don't think I want to finish. Lara Adrian's writing just doesn't stand up to other authors in this genre.
