It's All Too Much: An Easy Plan for Living a Richer Life with Less Stuff

When Peter Walsh, organizational guru of TLC's hit show Clean Sweep and a regular contributor to The Oprah Winfrey Show, appeared on national television shows and told people how they could reclaim their lives from the suffocating burden of their clutter, the response was overwhelming. People flooded Peter's website (www.peterwalshdesign.com) with success stories about how his book had changed their lives.

Peter's unique approach helped people everywhere learn to let go of the emotional and psychological clutter that was literally and figuratively choking the life out of their homes.

With his good humor and reassuring advice, Peter shows you how to face the really big question: What is the vision for the life you want to live? He then offers simple techniques and a step-by-step plan to assess the state of your home, prioritize your possessions, and let go of the clutter you have been holding on to that has kept you from living the life you imagine. The result is freed-up space, less stress, and more energy for living a happier, richer life every day.

This book was eye opening. I actually checked it out from the library a couple times and decided I just needed to buy it for reference and share it with friends and family. It is a very useful guide to organizing, downsizing and training your habits on your stuff. Definite must read for anyone with clutter or hoarding issues!!

This is the best book I have ever read. My husband is a hoarder, so we read it together. This book will help you systimatically go through your home and eliminate everything that you no longer use or need. I feel so free now, and my home is more peaceful and relaxing. It's a great life when you free yourself of the junk that keeps you from enjoying it.

I have bought alot of organizing books to only have them sit on the shelf and become part of the clutter. I got the audio of this book to avoid that and it has so motiviated me to get rid of things I don't use or should of gotten rid of years ago. Peter Walsh does it with humor and compassion but the bottom line is... you are not living if you are managing your clutter. If you can't have friends over until you clean your house you will never do that ever...YOU are a slave to your clutter is that really what you want to be?

I found a lot of good suggestions for tackling...stuff! Not so much 'clutter,' but just stuff--and how to cut back on it and rearrange it in a way that is more efficient. I'm taking a lot of it to heart and gradually going through one drawer, one shelf, one closet at a time. And it feels good!

This book seems different than most Organization books, it has many creative and quick ideas for keeping an organized home. What I liked best about it though, is Peter Walsh's no-nonsense approach to organization. The author makes it so anyone can easily become organized and let go of material things. His "FAST" approach is easy for anyone to handle, and the letters from prior clients show that his system works.

I'm a professional organizer in Honolulu, HI (www.organizedislands.com), and I use this type of approach when helping clients with major overhaul organization because it is systematic, organized, and effective.

Fun to read, inspiring, practical--buy this book, read it, and live it. Walsh creates a vision of what your life could be like without all the clutter. After reading his book, I gave my house a long overdue decluttering. His book fired me up so quickly that I couldn't wait to get started. Highly recommended!

I can't think of a thing I did not like about this book! Okay, the parts about kids didn't apply to me, but it was still interesting to read about it. I never realized clutter had this much control over other parts of life. Since reading this book I am determined to make my home more clutter free. It helped me see a lot of areas I need to work on, and helped me rationalize throwing away things I never would have had the nerve to throw away before. It's also written in very readable language. I promised this book to a friend so I read it quickly, but I wish I could keep it longer and savor the reading!

It's All Too Much is a very good organizing book. Peter does a good job on giving the pratical tips on de-cluttering and organizing space. One of the best things about his book is he gets the reader to think about why they are disorganized and why they are continuing to purchase more stuff. He does not suggest buying more organizng bins, instead stop buying more stuff. He also does a good job on getting people to think about only bringing in things into your life that you use, enjoy, and love.

I saw Peter on the Oprah show and had the buy the book. It is worth every penny. I disagree with the reader who said this book is only for people with families. He explains how to cut down on clutter and make sure that everyone is involved in the decision making process. He has a chapter on the kid's room, but if you don't have kids, just don't read it. I'm married without children and found this book to be life changing. It is a great investment.

This book is awesome. It's the first book ever that really made me understand that the collectibles gathering dust in my garage were not cherished items. I am now taking weekly loads of books to be sold, items (in good condition) to Goodwill. Maybe someone else will be able to cherish and use them. His book also opened my eyes to the idea that I have a limited amount of space (1300 sq. feet!) so I have to make careful choices about what I want to put in that space. For the first time in years we can now park both cars in the garage. Yay! This book was full of lightbulb moments.

(Hide Review...)  Great inspiration and advice!
Reviewer Permalink
I bought this book after watching a show on Oprah about clutter. In my opinion this book is great because is not the typical how to organize book, it attacks clutter from the inside out. Peter talks about all the possible reasons and excuses that we have to accumulate clutter and inspire you to let go. I got so inspired by it that I donated 15 big garbage bags of clutter to a charity and I feel great because there was a lot of useful things that other people can use and I feel free from stuff that I really didn't need but was holding on to. I still follow his advice "if something comes in, something must go out" to keep clutter under control and also I've found ways to do the 3 R's (like he calls them) reuse, recycle, resell that I had never thought of before because I was so busy buying instead of finding creative ways to use what I already had. He gives a very good idea on how to get rid of kitchen stuff, put it in a box and store it for a month, if within that month you didn't have to go to the box to get something then donate everything you don't need it. I got rid of half of my kitchen utensils following his adivce and love having the extra space, my kitchen seems more organized. I don't miss any of the things I gave away and my life seems more simpler, less stress, less to clean, and more time for creativity. This book was great for me!!!

This book put into words all the things I have been feeling about the clutter and "stuff" in my house for years. It is an engaging and fast read, and will truly make you want to get up and start cleaning immediately.

It motivated me to get rid of things I hadn't used or seen in years, and made me realize life is not about owning things, it is about relaxing and enjoying what you have. And in order to do that, the clutter has to go! I feel better, my husband feels better, and my son is happier that he can now comfortably do his homework in his room and have friends over. I can easily walk in the garage when I haven't been able to do so in years. Thank you SO much for writing this book, Mr. Walsh. You will NOT regret reading this book!!! No exaggeration, it has changed my family's life.

This book was recommended by a friend who saw Peter on Oprah. He has a cable show - Clean Sweep. I was very familiar with the show so I decided to order the book. It arrived at my place of business and my bosses daughter started reading it. ( I had to work, sigh) I took it home after work and started reading it assuring Allison that I would bring it back. The next day I brought it back and Allison finished it. That same day my boss picked it up and started to read it. She wanted to know if I would leave it so she could finish so she could read it. I still had not finished it. I jokingly asked her what she was going to give me for collateral. When I came to work the next morning,I learned that she had asked her husband to go and purchase a copy for themselves while she continued to read. I finally got mine back.

All this to say that I have recommended it to over 12 people. The family I work for have spend time around the dinner table reading it as a family and their adult son finally cleaned his room and got rid of years and years of stuff. They will tell you, as they have me, that this book has transformed their lives as well as their children.

I have gotten feed back from the people that I have recommended this book to and they all agree. It has changed my life and how I look at clutter.

Early last year I went with my boss and their daughter to clean out his parents home of over 40 years. Nothing had been tossed and it now fell on his shoulders being the only child. I have done clean outs before and it is always an eye opening and motivating experience. He vowed not to leave a mess for his children. He had no mess even close to the one we experience. This book helped him to keep it all in perspective and keep his motivation.

Well, all this to say this book is excellent and I would highly recommend it.

If Peter ever reads this I give Amazon permission to have him contact me. I believe in this book and would like to personally thank him.

I love this book. This is the first book about getting organized and letting go of clutter that I have read that actually made the lightbulb go off and I finally "got it". I have read a ton of books on clutter and Peter is the first author to make you realize it's okay to let things go - no matter how much they cost - or how much you think they are worth. He makes you understand that holding on to "stuff" is not worth any amount of money because it costs you so much precious time - cleaning it, storing it, worrying about it, etc.. I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about getting control of their life, home, and even finances - this book will change your life.

I come from a long family history of hoarders - with a father in medical sales who received boxes and boxes of pens, post-it notes and brochures, to a mother who keeps every coupon, plastic drink cup and recipe, I grew up in a house that was filled to the brim with crap.

I'd often threatened to send the folks from TLC's Clean Sweep out to my parents' house as when they downsized from my childhood home, they didn't really downsize any of their junk.

What I love about this book is two things: first, it is not just a quick and easy fix for those who hoard junk. It admits and examines the psychology behind people who keep absolutely everything, and the psychology behind assigning emotional value to even the most trivial of crap. Second, it provides a 'detox' plan that not only addresses getting rid of the physical but also the emotional baggage that has resulted from keeping things that didn't need to be kept.

Like dieting, the author recognizes that weaning oneself off of the urge to collect and store is not a quick fix, it's a life change that in order to be successful will require constant effort. I've seen positive impact already and hope that from now on, every time I visit my mom and dad, it will be easier and easier to make my way around their house without tripping over stacks of junk or having a thousand 7-11 cups fall on my head when I open the cupboard.

Ok, it's not a good idea to deal with a clutter problem by buying something new and bringing it into your house, but this is such a clearly written and helpful tool, that it is worth making space. No, it won't solve your messy problems for you. It just tries to give you ways to start without too much scolding.

The first few chapters were most helpful to me. Some of the material helps with discussing shared spaces with your family.

You get the feeling the author really wants you to be happy, and doesn't judge. He just keeps asking if your personal space is making you happy. And if you bought this book, probably not.

I decided after many years of keeping all the sentimental things, I needed a change. I didn't know where to begin. I had seen the author on tv & liked his ideas.I bought this book. I must say it was hard in the beginning to get started. I just kept telling my self if I couldn't use it or did not love it I needed to get rid of it. I also kept telling my self it took 15 years to get this way it would take more than a week to clean it out.Had a few moments. Cried a few tears.Got overwhelmed & stopped for a while, but after about 6 months my house was clean. All of these ideas are in his book. I didn't need a book that told me to go buy more stuff(bins) to keep the stuff I didn't need. This book has also helped me save money. I don't go out & buy things to collect dust. If I buy something new I get rid of something. It will be a life changing experience & for a lot of people that is scary. It was for me. I don't even think of the things I got rid of that seemed so hard to part with at the time. I now am able to walk by my grandfather's chair & smile & remember all the times he rocked in it.Rather than it being buried under a pile of useless junk. There are many sentimental things that are in my home, but only as many as my home can handle uncluttered. You have to go with this book in a way that you will not be defeated. It also is a process that is a life long thing. You can't clean out the junk & expect it to stay that way if you keep buying more stuff. It is possible & you will be smiling in the end.
